over 23,000 acres and the eaton fire burned more than 14,000 acres. at least 29 people died in the fires. there's a push to help san francisco's economic recovery. the city is considering a solution to empty storefronts, making it easier for chain stores to move in. currently, the process can take upwards of two years. a new proposal would allow formula retail on a one mile stretch of van ness avenue between redwood street and broadway. >> these are the former auto showrooms, and so permitting formula retail allows for more flexibility in these really, really big spaces that you're not seeing on merchant on on some of the neighborhood merchant corridors. >> the city defines formula retailers as companies with 11 or more outlets. the proposal still needs more support from the board of supervisors before moving forward. well, for the first time in decades, the fda has approved a new type of prescription pain medication.

juranovic is a non-opioid painkiller. doctors believe there's no risk in people becoming addicted, because they say it doesn't create the high that opioids can. >> this is a oral pill that's prescribed. you take it twice a day for moderate to severe acute pain, as you mentioned, and it targets the pain receptors outside the brain to prevent that signal from getting to the brain. because it doesn't work in the brain, it doesn't carry the addictive potential that opioids do, for example. so it's a very valuable tool that we're going to have in our arsenal here. >> juranovic is the first painkiller approved by the fda in more than 20 years. well, new this morning, costco and the teamsters union have reached a tentative agreement for a new contract. 18,000 workers represented by the teamsters union were ready to strike if an agreement was not reached by midnight. the union says the contract needs to reflect costco's record profits. last fiscal year, costco's net income
6:39 am
was double what it was in 2019. costco said it is negotiating in good faith. meanwhile, the company told employees at nonunion stores that they are increasing their pay. the union shared on social media that the tentative agreement will be presented for a vote. well, there's a battle brewing in the south bay over a plan for a chick fil a. the restaurant is planned for west san carlos and race streets, not far from san jose's diridon station. now, the local buena vista neighborhood association launched a petition opposing this project in september. the association received information from the city's planning division on the permit application. it called for the removal of 20 trees and the demolition of a commercial building, home to sharper cuts and taqueria eduardo. >> so if we allow a single story chick fil a or any fast food restaurant, that single story to displace existing businesses, be super car centric and not have
6:40 am
anything above it. again, it's a huge lost opportunity. >> we've reached out to the city to get more details on this proposal, and we're waiting to hear back on a potential timeline for construction. well, still ahead on abc seven mornings, a look at a new bay area clinic aiming to help kids through the pain of illness, using treatments from all across the world. and we'll take you outside for a live look from our roof camera as we're tracking this level two storm moving through the bay area. dave's been very excited about saving big with the comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. five years? -five years. and he's not alone. -high five. it's five years of reliable gig speed internet. five years of advanced securit. five years of a great rate that won't change. it's back. but only for a limited time.

6:43 am
syndrome, chloe says it came on suddenly, leaving her struggling to regain her normal life. >> for me it was really hard. it was really hard to get into, like a more positive mindset. >> chloe's journey mirrors the inspiration behind a newly opened clinic at ucsf's mission bay campus. walking into the center for pediatric pain, the first thing you might notice is the lava lamp in the lobby. it sets the tone for an innovative experience designed to treat children suffering chronic pain with an integrated approach. director stephan friedrichsdorf says that often includes a blend of eastern and western medicine and a little sleight of hand magic. >> so when we offer massage or hypnosis or deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation with best western medicine, we found that children need less pain medications. >> our tour started with experiences designed to help young patients move past their fear. a waiting room wall that

integrative techniques with other providers around the bay area and the country. >> and children are doing so much better, not only here, but worldwide. so we want to raise the bar and we want to do it now. while she's still managing her condition, chloe says the integrative techniques have helped her to the point that she now practices karate and is looking forward to her high school years and someday becoming a veterinarian. >> when i wasn't able to do any activities or just the stuff that i used to love, it was hard. it was really hard. and going back to it now, it's just it feels like me again. >> in san francisco, karina, nova, abc seven news. >> recovery rooted in resilience. that new center was made possible by a $3 million grant from alisa and mark stafford. all right, let's check on conditions outside with lisa as the rain continues this morning. >> yeah. we have three systems that we're going to be talking about. and as we take a live

weather headed our way for the weekend and beyond. right now, the focus is in northern california, but you can see what's to come. we're going to see this for several days and the rainfall totals are going to add up. we're going to compound them. and as we get into the middle of next week, we could see some issues, but much colder air arriving as well. scattered light drizzle mist out there from the north bay over into the east bay. so not a lot going on right now, but by mid morning early afternoon we'll get into this level two with the gusty winds and some soaking rain. 54 in oakland and fremont it is 52

sonoma san rafael, brentwood at 49 there's a look at santa cruz. about 6/10 of an inch of rain to come today. and you're going to see a lot of rain as we get into next week. so light to moderate rain throughout the morning hours. we'll say late morning to mid-morning. and then from 10:00 to 2:00 in the afternoon. this is when the focus of the system really moves on through. so we're going to see the soaking rain, windy conditions, a break for much of the bay area later today except the north bay and then into tomorrow. more rain showers from a level two today to a level one tomorrow, and much colder conditions as we get into late monday, and another level two on tuesday. here's a look at about 1030 this morning where pretty much everybody is seeing the wet weather except around san jose. gilroy, san martin still just some light shower activity. and then through 12:00 we've got heavy downpours from concord to oakland, santa rosa, and by 3:00, things are beginning to lighten up a bit in parts of the

bay, but still scattered showers, still a wet north bay. and then by 7:00 we do still see a bit of a break out there. but those gusty southerly winds with us throughout the day sunday, mid morning we've got a few showers. the focus still in the north, but you can see we've got scattered showers throughout the day. level one system on sunday into monday afternoon. this is when our next level two system is queuing up, but it will be the evening commute where we see the heavy rain into monday night. you can see the downpours from the east bay into the south bay and that takes us into tuesday. so rainfall today focused in the north bay, a half inch to an inch, perhaps a half inch in oakland, a third of an inch in fremont. less than that, the peninsula and the south bay. then as we get into early monday morning. so all day sunday, we're adding just a little bit more here from half inch to 6/10, east bay and south bay. and then by monday night when the system rolls on through late monday into about 10 or 11:00,
6:51 am
you can see we've upped to 2 to 3in for totals in the north bay, still about a half inch to three quarters of an inch in the east bay, and it looks like the tuesday system will really focus further south, and that should get the south bay into some more rain activity, 20 to 30 mile an hour winds today. so it's very gusty out of the south. and looking at the snowfall over the weekend, not much because we are in a warmer pattern right now with the rain snow mix. avalanche threat is huge though, with heavy rain and then heavy snow to come and gusty winds 4 to 6 and seven feet through next weekend into early saturday. these are the rainfall projections as we added up through seven days, five to almost six inches. santa rosa over three and a half in san francisco, san jose getting some wet weather. upper 50s to about 60 today. windy conditions. morning showers for your sunday. the accuweather seven day forecast. level two today. level
