"good morning america." >> robin: it's monday. yes! good morning america. we have the biggest night, so many incredible moment, and over $7 million raised overnight for wild fire relief. >> rebecca: such a need there. it was great to see it incorporated into last night's festivities. we also have a lot to get to. this just coming in. usaid workers received an e-mail overnight telling them to stay home. their offices are closed today. >> george: that is one more example of the power of elon musk, the world's richest man. he was tweeting about how he's been tasked to shut down that department and move it to the treasury department. we're gonna cover that. plus the sweeping tariffs on imports from mexico, canada, china. it's set to go into effect at midnight. more than $1 trillion in imports flow into ports each year. we'll have more on the impact of the tariffs on america. chief white house correspondent mary bruce starts us off.

good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. president trump acknowledges these tariffs may cause some economic pain for americans, but he says it is worth it to send a message. first thing this morning he's expected to speak with the mexican president and canadian prime minister, as the markets brace for tariffs which could impact everything from the price of cars to groceries. this morning with the country on the brink of a trade war, president trump is saying bring it on. >> if they want to play the game, i don't mind. we can play the game all they want. >> reporter: with just hours to go until his sweeping tariffs take effect, trump targeting america's three largest trading partners, using emergency authority to impose 25% tariffs on all goods from mexico and canada. lower 10% tariff on canadian oil and gas. china hit with 10% tariffs from trump's first term. trump campaigned on a promise to lower prices for americans, but economists warn this could have the opposite effect. prices on everything from produce and toys, to gasoline

and cars expected to climb. >> we may have short-term, little pain, and people understand that. >> reporter: he argues the tariffs are a necessary response to the flow of migrants and drugs, including fentanyl coming into the u.s., characterizations that mexico, canada, china all reject. >> this is retaliatory to a certain extent. millions of people flowed into our country through mexico and canada. we're not going to allow that. >> reporter: last year 43 pounds of fentanyl w southern border. fatal overdoses of fentanyl and other street drugs down nationally by 20% since june of 2023. trump calling broadly for balanced trade and border control. this morning canada and mexico are hitting back. mexico's president announcing

she'll impose retaliatory tariffs, and slamming trump for accusing her government of working with drug cartels. she said it's the demand for drugs and arguing the two countries must work together. to the north a similar message from canadian prime minister trudeau insisting the canadian border is safe and secure. >> less than 1% of fentanyl, less than 1% of illegal crossings into the united states come from canada. >> reporter: canadian fans booing the u.s. national anthem at three nhl and nba games including the raptors game in toronto. [ crowd booing ] canada's ambassador telling george the white house has not been clear about what more canada could have done to avoid this. >> canadians are perplexed, i think disappointed. we view ourselves as your neighbor, your closest friend, your ally. >> reporter: china is also denouncing these trump tariffs promising, quote, counter measures and threatening to take

legal action against the u.s. with the world trade organization. robin? >> robin: mary, thanks to you. want to get more on how american consumers could be impacted by the tariffs on nearly all imports from mexico, canada and china, and how the market is reacting. elizabeth schulze is on wall street. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the stock market is set to open sharply lower this morning as investors and companies come to reality with these sweeping tariffs on china, mexico and canada. their scope is massive. president trump imposed about $400 billion worth of tariffs in his first term. this would hit $1.3 goods. consumers could pay the price. this morning american households and businesses are bracing for higher prices on nearly half of all goods imported into the u.s. >> from fresh fruits and vegetables from mexico, to maple syrup and vehicles from canada, to consumer electronics from china. lots of stuff in between.

>> reporter: the tariffs mean businesses will pay the u.s. government a higher fee when their shipments enter at the border. economists warning trump will pass down the higher cost to consumers. >> the americans need to prepare for higher prices. >> reporter: within weeks prices could get more expensive in the grocery aisle with retailers can't stock pile. 47% of all imported vegetables come from mexico and canada. 91% of avocados. about 87% of mexico. the auto sector also highly exposed. new car prices could go up $3,000 on average if the tariffs stay in effect. small businesses like the tenny ice creamery in california import key ingredients from canada. >> if we see costs go up because of tariffs, we will have to pass those on to our customers. >> reporter: prices are likely to rise on clothes, appliances and children's toys with 85% of all toys in the u.s. made in

china. the ceo of basic fun tell us the price of a popular toy like a tonka truck could go up from $30 to $40 by christmas. >> we just don't have the opportunity to just bring manufacturing back to the united states. >> reporter: building materials are also at risk, potentially raising the cost of buying a new home. now, oil is also trading higher this morning, about 60% of u.s. imported crude oil comes from canada. so that could mean higher prices at the pump, up to 20%, especially in areas like the midwest and northeast, guys. >> rebecca: a lot of impact there. elizabeth, thank you. guys, this just shows how interconnected our economies are. there are major consequences, ripple effects across the board. especially with small businesses. those stocks are some of the worst hit this morning, down the most. i heard from a number of small business owners over the weekend. they're really scrambling to figure out what they're going to

do. you heard from elizabeth the cost of a car could go up $3,000. most car part, even when made in the u.s., the car parts generally come from mexico or canada. on wall street virtually every economist believe if these tariffs go into effect, if they last a long time, they impact us, they cause inflation and potentially even a recession if it goes on long enough, which is why wall street, at this moment, expects this to be short lived. they see this as a strategic move. they believe if it were to go on for an extensive period of time, it's going to impact the market. president trump talked about the market as his report card. that would not be a good looking report card. >> robin: he often has said the market doesn't like uncertainty. thanks. >> rebecca: this is a big piece of uncertainty. >> robin: thank you. >> george: critical meetings this morning. as the potential trade war moves up, elon musk's targeting a federal agency.

chief washington correspondent jon karl has that story. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. elon musk and his department of public efficiency have promised to take a wrecking ball to the u.s. government, to dramatically reduce the number of government employees. now we have learned his team has gained access to something extraordinarily sensitive. the system that the treasury department uses to disperse almost every check and expenditure of any kind made by the u.s. government. sources tell abc news that elon musk's team now has access to the treasury department's payment system, essentially the government's checkbook, which processes trillions of dollars in payments and includes personal information for hundreds of millions of americans. the access was granted over the weekend over the objection of at least one senior treasury department official who has been put on leave. neither the white house nor treasury department has responded to our request for comment. but after midnight last night,

billionaire elon musk talked about his efforts to shake up the government on his special media platform x. >> there's already been tremendous progress. you know, rough estimate is, that there's at least a few billion dollars a day of saving. >> reporter: one of musk's top targets usaid. federal government foreign aid agency. >> for usaid, it became apparent what we have is not an apple with a worm in it, but we have just a bowl of worms. >> reporter: friday night, showed up at the usaid offices in washington and demanded access. sources familiar with the incident tell abc news. after a standoff, security guards ultimately let them in. now more than 100usaid staffers have been placed on leave. many more have been locked out of internal systems, and the organization trump appointed chief of staff has resigned. usaid's $43 billion budget is a

tiny fraction of federal spending about 1%. but its support is a critical life line for people in need around the world. all while spreading american goodwill. combatting malaria an effort estimated to have saved 12 million lives. and in partnership with the u.s. military, usaid officials have often been first to arrive with disaster relief, bringing food, water, shelter to allies. this was in. usaid partners are waking up to an e-mail notice telling them not to show up to work today, as musk said he is shutting the agency down. all of this, george, is happening over the loud objections of democratic leaders in congress who say that elon musk simply does not have the authority to do what he is now doing. >> george: that's gonna be tested. it is something remarkable when the biggest contributor to donald trump's campaign is now

taking these actions inside the government. tremendous unrest inside the fbi as prosecutors and agents who worked on the january 6th investigation are being targeted. >> reporter: it looks like a wholesale purge at the fbi. as you know, already the eight top officials at the federal bureau of investigations have been fired or forced to resign. now they are being asked to the fbi is being asked to produce a list of every employee who worked on any case related to january 6th. i am told this is 6,000 fbi employees all told. all this has prompted an extraordinary e-mail that went out over the weekend from the top fbi official in new york field office saying -- that is somebody who has not yet been -- who's still on the job,

there were people jumping over the seats trying to get off the plane. >> reporter: 104 passengers and crew safely evacuating. some scrambling down an emergency slide onto the runway. >> i thought i was gonna die. i'm just happy once they said everyone evacuate the plane. once i was outside i was hoping the jet wouldn't blow up in my face. >> reporter: the faa said takeoff was safely aborted because of the reported engine issue. an investigation now under way. given the recent tragedies in the sky, some passengers admit it wasn't easy boarding another plane. >> i was scared. >> reporter: and, look. i know all of these incidents are very, very scary, but experts insist flying is still the safest mode of transportation. without a doubt, robin, it's got to be safer. >> robin: as you can understand, there is a lot of concern out there. gio, our thanks to you, as always. now we've got the trade called the most shocking in nba history.

to pull that wreckage out of the water very soon here. we do have some new information this morning that we want to tell you about. some of the most reliable location data showing the crash happened at just over 300 feet. the blackhawk helicopter was supposed to be flying at 200 feet or below. the ntsb said the tower radar which the air traffic controller was looking at, may have shown the chopper was at that normal 200 feet. five people were working in the control tower at the time of the crash. one person was handling plane and helicopter traffic telling the blackhawk to watch out for that american airlines flight two minutes before impact. now, inside that blackhawk three soldiers were on board. lobach was an army captain and white house military social aid. you can see her here escorting fashion designer ralph lauren during the presidential medal of freedom ceremony just last month. just heartbreaking all around. investigators are really hopeful

those black boxes can get us some real answers. rebecca? >> rebecca: all of those souls. yes, just hoping for some answers. all right, gio. thank you. we turn to the investigation into the medical transport flight that crashed in philadelphia on friday. all six people on that small jet and one person on the ground were killed. stephanie ramos is in philadelphia with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: hi there, rebecca. this morning the ntsb says they've located the cockpit voice recorder from the medical transport jet that plunged to the ground here in philadelphia. flying eight feet below the sight of official impact. take a look at aerial footage showing the gaping hole in the ground from the aircraft. the small plane operated by jet rescue air ambulance took off from northeast philadelphia airport friday night after 6 p.m. less than a minute later it plummeted erupting into a fiery explosion.

back in 2018 i had to leave a broadway show because of my mental health. your post this morning about closed doors, i thought that door was closed for me to return on broadway. i thought i blew it. i thought i would be seen as a liability. can she maintain? and six years later i get a phone call, minding my business, saying we want you to come to new york. consider being viola and originating a role on broadway. >> robin: yes, yes. not just any role. >> i know. >> robin: isabella rossalini, who was in the film, she came to see you. >> she came to see me in the play. i turned into possibly a little girl, or somebody when you admire and respect them so much. just like the same thing i have for you. >> robin: oh, bless you. >> i didn't want to keep her waiting. my hair and makeup was probably all over the place.

year. >> robin: finally. >> finally. she seemed most surprised about the country album. very, very, very thrilled and excited for her. >> robin: they are thrilled an excited for you. you were eluding to earlier about the last time you were on broadway under doctor's orders you were told you need to step away and take care of your mental wellness. can you just share your journey since that time we've seen you? >> since that time. 2018 was bitter and sweet, you know n that year. 2018 the world knows i checked myself into a treatment facility for depression. the off before broadway show came in, once on this island. i was so excited to get back on the broadway stage. i wasn't as well as i probably should have been. just got to a point where i had to check out of the show. >> robin: yeah. >> i didn't want to do it.

to me that was two blows in the same year. checking into a treatment facility for depression, and then checking out of a show still because of it. like i said earlier this morning, i thought i'd blown it. i thought the door was closed. my life just began to transition in a different purpose, passion was birthed, being an advocate and public speaker about mental health. and so i just thought, well, this is where my life is. listen, i did ieda2003, the color purple, chicago the musical. >> robin: right, right. >> i've had a good run on broadway. >> robin: excellent run. >> then february of 2024, i'm minding my business. i think i get the text on a saturday or a sunday. it comes to my work e-mail box. my work e-mail box has a specific tone that i know this is work. because it was on the weekend i was like, i don't know if i'm gonna look at it or answer it.

>> george: story now about the lsu football player who was on the road to realizing his nfl dreams when he started feeling ill. took a month for him to be diagnosed with brain cancer. now he's suing the school and the hospital that treated him him after surgery he says left him disabled. michael sat down with him. >> michael: greg brooks jr., starting safety at lsu, was at the top of his game. he was captain of the football team, starting 13 of 14 games he played. by many accounts, he was a prospect for the nfl. >> i feel like this is great. we have a better bond throughout the team. everything is going good. >> michael: all that came to a shocking end when a sudden illness took him off the field. >> people couldn't understand me. >> michael: take us back to september 2023. you learned your son had a brain tumor. >> my question was, why that kid?

everything we want our young men to be, this kid signified that. >> michael: it was august of 2023. the newly selected team captain said he began feeling dizzy, had a headache and was nauseous during practice. in a lawsuit he has since filed against louisiana state university and our lady of the lake medical center for negligence, greg alleges he passed out then began to vomit minutes later in front of his coaches and athletic trainers. he says he was told by the athletic trainer he had vertigo and was cleared to return to practice. according to the filing, despite continuing to report those symptoms on a daily basis, it wasn't until 39 days after his symptoms began that a team made an appointment with the neurologist, who discovered the brain tumor. what did the school or coaches tell you about what he was going through? >> nothing. the one call that i received was, i need you to get here. your son is having emergency surgery tomorrow morning.

>> michael: was there a point where you were concerned about who was in charge of that decision? >> he said lsu, one of the best colleges in the united states. i never thought that his best interests weren't being taken. >> michael: so you didn't seek a second opinion? >> no, sir. >> michael: he claims the family was led to believe their only option was moving forward emergently with the brain surgery, also alleging the surgeon was not qualified to do this particular surgery, during which brooks suffered multiple strokes and was left with severe and permanent injuries. what is the first thing you remember when you came out of surgery? >> i thought it was fake. i was in disbelief. >> michael: like a dream? >> yeah. like a nightmare that i couldn't wake up from. >> michael: after radiation and chemotherapy, greg, now 23, is

cancer-free, but his recovery is far from over. little greg, as the brooks family calls him, has had to relearn how to eat, write and speak. why do you want to speak out now? >> i want young athletes in the same spot i was, if something is hurting, tell them. and if they don't do anything about it, go get your second opinion. because if i would have known that i wouldn't be the way i am right now. >> the disease is not the issue. this is the after math of injury from surgery. >> michael: you said you haven't heard from anybody from the lsu coaching staff since october of 2023. >> specifically brian kelly. my son almost lost his life, coach. where were you? forget about football.

pick up the phone and say you love the kid, man. >> michael: at the time the suit was filed, lsu said brooks remains in our thoughts and prayers and since the beginning of our agreement with our championship health partner, our lady of the lake, they have provided exceptional medical care for our student athletes in all of our sports. our lady of the lake also said it could not comment on the litigation but that its neurosurgical team is among the most experienced in louisiana and they give our patients the best opportunity for positive outcome in any circumstance. so what do you want most for him going forward? >> i want him to lead a productive life, whatever it may be. >> michael: little greg, for you? >> i just want to be normal. >> michael: now, instead of following his father's footsteps into the nfl, greg jr. has daily speech and occupational therapy. he's also had an outpouring of love and support from friends and family. my daughter isabella, diagnosed with the same tumor as little

greg, just a month after him. what was your reaction when you saw her story? >> i said, my heart went out to you, man. my heart went out to you. and when i seen her come and i seen her walk, i said, that's not my son. i don't know where he was at that point. he wasn't speaking. he wasn't responding. he wasn't doing anything. i was torn. i was. >> somebody at least knows what i went through. we use her for advice, what to do next. >> he was a very athletic young man. just seeing him -- he obviously didn't go into his surgery thinking he'd end up the way he did. i'm very fortunate that mine
