we have a look this morning at life before he was a star, with a great story ahead from the brother and sister he used to baby-sit. >> whit: amazing. the rushing leader, to baby-sitter, great story. first a winter storm making for a dangerous morning commute for millions of americans. >> george: snow, sleet and ice, freezing rain is all moving from the midwest to northeast and mid-atlantic states. we have team coverage. we begin with trevor ault just outside philly in norristown, pennsylvania. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. this storm is hitting the northeast just in time for rush hour. we have been teetering on the edge of freezing. we have salt trucks trying to treat the roads with a mix of snow and ice and sleet and rain, too. a very daining mix for drivers. this morning, millions of americans hunkering down as a winter storm sweeps across country. ohio to boston facing freezing rain and dropping temperatures.

the icy mix creating hazardous conditions for commuters up and down the east coast. overnight road crews in washington, d.c. deploying snow plows and loaded bags of salt ahead of the storm. the system striking parts of the midwest as well. icy roads and poor conditions causing dozens of accidents leading to lane closures along i 70. in seattle, a separate storm system blanketing highways with snow. authorities responding to multiple collisions. snow showers transforming communities overnight, covering houses and cars. and the pennsylvania department of transportation says they have 400 snow plows working through the night trying to protect roads. but this is a widespread storm. at least 16 states under snow and ice alerts, rebecca. >> rebecca: something to watch out for. okay, trevor. thank you. we're gonna go now to ginger, who's in nyack, new york, with the timing and track of the storm. good morning, ginger.

>> ginger: my kids are pumped because they are closed today schools from here back to cleveland we're seeing schools close. behind me there's that accumulation. it was sleet. now on top of it there's that glaze of freezing rain. that wintry mix will be with us for the next couple hours. as we move to the north and east, though, boston will start with frozen precipitation. most people at the coast will transition to rain. stkl stkl on the back end there are severe storms. we even had a tornado watch in kentucky. west virginia there, flash flood emergency, melting snow plus heavy rain. everybody in the advisory up to maine, let's time it out. boston could have a hit of snow but it's that wintry mix. especially freezing rain there. tough for road, 90 or 95 up through connecticut and rhode island. then we'll move out by tonight. then we're going to be stormy

this weekend and early next week. guys? >> george: ginger, thanks. now the latest on president trump and elon musk's moves to reshape the federal government. more federal agencies are being targeted including the intelligence community. rachel scott tracking it all from the white house. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. millions of federal workers have just hours to respond to these buyout offers. they are faced with a choice to either resign or run the risk of being fired. the deadline, tonight. it's decision day for millions of federal employees. at least 40,000 already taking the buyout offer to resign now with several months of pay. and this morning many intelligence workers, they put that same deadline, too. quit now or possibly be laid off in the future. to comply with the review of the federal work force, the cia e-mailed a list of new employees to the white house over a nonclassified system. that list included the first names and last initial of employees hired in the last two years. but now it has prompted fear and

concern that those intelligence officers could be at risk. >> we go to great lengths to protect the cover for cia officers. and if all of that can be destroyed by a reckless malicious sending of an e-mail, that blows our cover and makes us much more vulnerable. >> reporter: federal employees received the buyout offers with an e-mail titled a fork in the road. same subject line elon musk sent to twitter employees when he took over in 2022. democrats warning employees should proceed with caution. on capitol hill, sounding the alarm about musk and his massive reach into the federal government. >> i move that the committee subpoena elon musk to come as a witness at the earliest possible moment. >> reporter: the hearing quickly turning into a shouting match. >> yes, let's have order in this country. >> you're out of order. you know you're out of order. you know the rules of this committee. there's been a motion. >> mr. elon musk is out of order. >> reporter: musk and his

department of government efficiency only digging deeper into federal agencies. from usaid, department of education, to centers for medicare and medicade. the government's health care program to 160 million americans. and the treasury, musk gaining access to the country's payment system. which includes personal information of millions of americans. overnight the department of justice only agreed to allow two special government employees with ties to musk to key that sensitive data. one is the former chief executive of a silicon valley tech company. the other is a 25-year-old engineer who worked for x and space x. two companies musk owns. the white house says musk is working hand in hand with the president. >> the two of them with a great team around them, we're going to look at the receipts of this federal government and ensure it's accountable to american taxpayers. >> reporter: president trump's push to shrink the federal government has caused some confusion. some programs caught in the middle. even though a judge blocked the president's freeze on federal

grants, some head start programs are still shut out of payments nearly a week later. >> these are the most vulnerable people in our society. these are low income, 3 and 4-year-olds that are just looking for an opportunity to be ready for school and hopefully have a chance for a better life. the trump administration is facing a slew of legal challenges this morning. yesterday we saw federal judge block the president's executive order on birth right citizenship. today a different judge is going to weigh the future of these buyout offers being seen and being offered to federal employees across the federal government. then also, we reported on the fbi turning over a list of agents who worked on january 6th cases to the department of justice. we do know that some of those fbi agents sued, saying they are now being targeted by their own department. there will be a hearing in that case as well today. >> george: on that front, the attorney general, pam bondi, at her confirmation hearing, said she would not use her office to target trump political

opponents. she appears to be going back on that promise. >> reporter: just hours after pam bondi was sworn in as attorney general, she launched this weaponization working group, george, that she says is going to review politicized actions of those who investigated donald trump, both state and federal level. democrats are very quick to point this out, george, that it was bondi, who said no one would be prosecuted simply because they are a political opponent of president trump, george. >> george: rachel, thank you very much. whit? >> whit: now the fallout from president trump saying the u.s. would take over gaza. our chief white house correspondent mary bruce tracking this for us also from the white house. mary, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. after the president declared that the u.s. would take over gaza and the palestinian people would be permanently relocated, the white house this morning is struggling to explain what this plan would look like, how this would work. this proposal has sparked international outrage. now some administration officials are seeming to dial back the president's language.

the president said bluntly that it was his intention to remove palestinians from gaza permanently. but here's the white house press secretary, saying the relocation would be temporary, to allow gaza to rebuild. the administration estimates that could take 10 to 15 years. she insisted the u.s. would not be paying for that rebuilding. while the president said he was willing to use the u.s. military, when i asked her whether they would forcibly remove palestinians or fighting on the ground, she said the president has not committed to troops in the region. and in fact, just now, the president posting that, quote, no soldiers of the u.s. would be needed saying stability for the region would reign. the white house was pressed on decades of criticism of u.s. entanglements abroad. the white house said the u.s. would not be entangled in the middle east through this plan even though the president said, quote, the u.s. would own gaza and would be responsible for dismantling all of the unexploded bombs and weapons there. george? >> george: we're gonna own gaza

even though we're not gonna send money or troops. all the other nations said they aren't prepared to take palestinians. >> reporter: that's exactly where we stand right now. the president is calling for this plan without explaining how he is going to pull this off. they are not committing to pulling troops on the ground or sending any money. they have not explained by what authority the president would be able to take over this territory. >> george: mary bruce, thank you very much. now across the bay and the thieves taking advantage. elizabeth schulze has the story. >> reporter: egg prices are breaking records across the country. they are only set to go higher. egg suppliers grapple through the bird flu, it is quickly rippling through the supply chain, prompting some to even turn to theft. this morning as the price of eggs sky rocket, thieves are cashing in. in pennsylvania, 100,000 eggs worth $40,000 were stolen from pete and jerry's organic farm.

authorities are investigating the incident saying with the extreme increased price of eggs someone may have thought they could sell them. this as a new type of bird flu has been detected in u.s. dairy cows. the usda finding the second strain in a nevada herd. >> that is a concern because it shows that there's persistent risk of bird flu in cows and to the people that work closely with them. >> reporter: it's the same version of the virus that killed a louisiana man in january, the first u.s. death attributed to bird flu. the bird flu outbreak is forcing poultry farms to cut their egg supply. >> why am i paying $7.99 for a dozen eggs? >> reporter: driving up prices and fueling shortages at the grocery store. >> $14.99 for eggs? >> reporter: family owned businesses like restaurants and bakeries feeling the squeeze. >> it's ruining my bottom line. there is no bottom line. the bottom fell out of my bottom line. >> reporter: but for some the math isn't adding up. >> the case used to be $60,

today i paid $221. >> reporter: the agriculture department expects that egg prices will go up another 20% this year. we did already see waffle house add that $0.50 surcharge per egg on its menu. other restaurant chains could do the same as they pass on those higher costs to their customers, rebecca. >> rebecca: that was a big one. $60 to $220. thank you, elizabeth. we're gonna go now to the countdown to the super bowl. security will be extremely tight. that was before president trump announced he would attend the big game. will reeve got a firsthand look at all the measures in place. you took the chopper around and you got the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: i did and i do. good morning to you. according to secret service, president trump will be the first sitting president to attend a super bowl. so security will be heightened. but authorities told me the most stringent measures are already in place. and i got a bird's eye view of new orleans and all the measures

that are in place to keep the city safe. this morning an inside look at the final preparations for super bowl lix. in new orleans, we took to the skies with customs and border protection air and marine operations. you can see the preparations already under way. plenty going on down on the ground. but here high in the sky, this is all about keeping the city safe. security protocols for the super bowl enhanced after that deadly terror attack on bourbon street last month. what would you say to folks who might be a bit anxious about security here in new orleans in the wake of the attack on new year's day? >> the super bowl is a level one tier event, so we have resources that have partnered together to ensure that the air space is secure and that the ground and the venue and the events are secure. >> reporter: on the water, the coast guard patrolling the mississippi river. and on the ground, 2,700 local, state and federal law enforcement. >> we want to make sure people

virginia. we'll get rid of this by tonight but boston's got to deal with it for much of today. >> rebecca: a lot for people to pay attention to. thanks, ginger. we turn now to the two suspects arraigned in a manhattan courtroom yesterday in connection with the burglaries at professional athletes' homes. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with more on that. good morning, aaron. >> good morning, rebecca. these two guys the fbi says are charged with fencing what was taken from pro athletes and wealthy homeowners were in possession of $5 million. the two men pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to receive these stolen items. prosecutors wanted them held without bail but the judge agreed to release them once they can arrange a hefty bond. prosecutors said the men created a market place that promotes residential burglaries of homes across the united states and they specifically linked one of the defendants to the thieves who hit the ohio home of cincinnati bengal quarterback joe burrow. investigators are still going through what was seized from the pawn shop and storage units in new jersey but said the men likely possessed millions in

they have a tough job even when it comes to kids soccer. they've had a lot of chatter going on after the playoffs, after the chiefs. some people saying they were favoring them. do you think there's gonna be added scrutiny in this super bowl match? >> i think the referees are gonna call a fair game. it's the super bowl. they get the best referees, they combine them and poll them at a fair rate of who should be refereeing. they pick the best ones throughout the whole entire season. i don't think no one's gonna be favored. it's all about the best team who wins this game. it's not about the referees making calls, if it's a holding, roughing the passer. it's all about who makes the most plays throughout the game and who comes through in the last two minutes as well. >> whit: you said about the best team. all right. we're gonna put you on the spot. your prediction? who wins this game, gronk? >> i'm going with the kansas city chiefs. they're gonna score 30 points [ crowd reacting ]

'cause it took me a long time to even tell my children what i had done. to see her talking about it is a surprise.

>> that is so special. you might be mama at home, but you mean so much to so many people in the community. the nfl inspire change social justice initiative dedicated to removing barriers to opportunities in areas including education. you've been at the forefront of that. you are one of its change makers for the work you've done. your foundation continues. tell us a little about what you're doing to educate children. >> we're having the schools come in to the tate center. the tech center is the nickname of the building. i noticed that as many times as i've visited school, i can talk til i'm blue in the face. i want them to feel what we went through. they don't understand it that way. i want them to see and feel what we went through. they come to the building. they see a film. a black and white film. they think it happened so long ago. they don't see me until after the film. it's like a ghost walked through the door. i notice a change in them once they leave. they question me.

they want to know it all, you know? i feel like they appreciate school a little bit better. >> you are truly a change maker and a pillar in your community, life long native of new orleans. how does it feel to have the super bowl here in your city? how are you feeling? >> i'm excited, 'cause the city is beautiful right now. i want it to stay that way, you know? it's really exciting for us. we're out now. we've been locked up with the snow. [ applause ] >> what's the plan? what are you gonna do for the game? >> i'm going home, make some gumbo, sit down and watch it on tv. >> you might have to put the gumbo on the back burner sunday evening because you are gonna go to the super bowl.
