attendance isn't up. so then we have to do things that are only going to make enrollment worse and attendance worse. that's what i mean that we got to. oakland has to stop that. >> the committee did not reach an agreement on what budget proposal to recommend to the school board. the board is scheduled to vote on a budget later this month. >> a big change could be coming to downtown san jose. according to our media partners at the bay area news group, a real estate firm is proposing a plan to revamp a three block area that's mostly vacant right now. it encompasses an area along south first street, not far from san jose state. paseo place would have space for restaurants, retail and entertainment businesses. city leaders hope to speed up the development proces, so it's ready for the major sporting events coming to the south bay next year. this includes the super bowl. now, the san jose city council has reaffirmed its support for undocumented immigrants and started the process to take their support further. now, this

week, the council unanimously approved a resolution introduced last month that commits the city to not collaborating with the federal government as it relates to deportation enforcement. the resolution also looks at the possibility of providing $2.5 million in funding to the rapid response networks, which identifies ice activity in the area. the resolution also looks into funding for legal services. >> defense for members of our community who may be stuck in deportation enforcement limbo. there are a lot of people who get stuck in there and they get lost in that system. and so we want to make sure that if san jose is home, that you get resources from the city. >> there is a virtual town hall planned for the upcoming wednesday to take questions from community members about immigration policies and resources. >> still ahead making homes fire resistant the executive order. governor newsom just signed for homeowners across the state. >> and you are looking live at the big board at the new york stock exchange. you can see we're up about four points. another update on how the

markets are doing next. >> also making a splash. a look at the new bar opening today just outside of chase center. but first here's drew. >> hey there. live doppler seven is showing you. we have some isolated showers out there this morning. it's not widespread, but we do find 1 or 2 of these this morning. it could drop visibility momentarily. we'll take you down into the city right now. we have a line of some light to moderate showers moving through. kind of the northern half of the city. moving into the bay bridge in about five minutes. oakland. just a heads up. you'll see a quick moving shower out there. these do not last long, only until about 9 a.m. after 9 a.m. watch what happens. we get rid of this storm system and it will turn sunny and dry this afternoon. but temperatures will be on the cool side in the mid and upper 50s. now we take a bigger picture of live doppler seven along with satellite. this low is about to cross northern california and exit, and as it exits, it's taking those showers with it this morning. but we do have snow still falling in the sierra around tahoe as well. just look, we have chain controls on all roads leading to tahoe this morning. so snow

executive order, speeding up rules requiring homeowners to make their homes more fire resistant. the timeline isn't clear yet, but eventually all homes in extreme fire risk areas must have a five foot buffer where nothing can catch fire. and that means no dead plants, wooden fences or furniture within five feet of your walls. experts say those strict requirements make a difference even in extreme situations like the palisades fire. this will only apply to homes in areas the state considers very high fire risk. it's worth noting that doesn't apply to parts of altadena devastated by the eden fire. southern california is beginning the next phase of the wildfire disaster. >> it was one month ago today.

those fires burned through los angeles neighborhoods, destroying thousands of homes and businesses. today, abc seven and our sister stations in california are coming together for a one day fundraiser to help our neighbors in need. >> joining us live in studio now is hana malik, northern california coastal region ceo for the american red cross. we want to make sure that we get that. absolutely. >> but that's a fancy way of saying you represent the bay area for the red cross. >> absolutely. we're happy to be here. >> now, before we begin, we do want to let our viewers know that you can donate at red cross dot org, slash, abc and hana. we knew that you were down there. you said for two weeks. what was the situation like for you? we'll start there. >> yeah. so i got there one day after the fire started, and it was great to see the red cross spring into action with our community partners and help people displaced by the fires. today, we still have two shelters open with over 200 residents in those shelters, and we work for helping people with long term solutions like housing and child care. >> child care is important. one of my friends, like so many
6:47 am
people in the bay area, i have a friend whose house burned to the ground. she has a newborn, only five weeks old when the fire came and destroyed her house and she was unable to leave with anything at all. just her baby ran out of the house and so immediately, her friends, including me, we were sending like formula and baby wipes and that kind of stuff. but we know that there has to be a longer term solution for these folks. so if people do donate to the red cross, where does that money go? >> yeah, that's a great question. making that financial donation allows us the most fast, fastest way to make that impact. someone from cal oes said it well the other day they talked about if you donate things, people are limited to maybe a brand that they don't like or maybe not their favorite color, or that shirt doesn't fit just right when they have financial assistance from organizations like the red cross, they're able to touch and feel and get their favorite color, their right size, and then it also helps stimulate the local economy. >> yeah, and i know that some people, if they're sitting here thinking about how much can i donate, even a $10 donation goes so far. can you walk us through,
6:48 am
you know, when people are sitting there trying to gauge, how much do i give? >> absolutely. $10 goes a long way for those that have been displaced. that could help pay for blankets and hygiene kits. as you know, many people left with the clothes on their back, and those hygiene kits make a simple way to help them get back to normal. >> this charity is obviously not tit for tat. we don't give in order to receive back again, but we know it's only a matter of time before we're going to be in a situation where northern california is once again burning. so there is sort of like a policy here where we have to help our neighbors because we'll potentially be in the same situation. >> yeah, that's been the most heartwarming part about all of this is seeing californians step up, supporting our neighbors down in southern california. we've got a lot of experience with wildfires up here. we've had over 100 northern california volunteers deployed down to southern california, and they gain experience in practice so that when it happens here in our backyard, we're even more ready and more prepared. >> yeah, and to reggie's point, we have seen a lot of those devastating wildfires up north as well. here in the bay area. we've come together as a

community. what did you take away from the community and that level of hope that they have? obviously, we're a month since they first sparked. there's still so much to do. >> yeah, just seeing that resiliency in the community coming together was really special. i got to meet one shelter resident named lorna who got to move into some some longer term housing, and she had bonded with a neighbor she had never met before. but they bonded over this experience and she said, make sure you look out for susie. susie is an elderly woman. she didn't have any family, any friends locally, and that just shows the community and the resilience. >> i'm wondering just more broadly before we wrap up here, how are things red cross fundraising wise generally, even, you know, the fire side. i know a lot of donations come in when a major emergency happens, but some people have been struggling in this economy. and i'm just wondering how you all are doing. >> yeah, it's an ongoing, you know, efforts for fundraising. most people don't know that in addition to big disasters like earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, we respond to single family fires every single night.
6:50 am
the fire department puts that fire out. we meet clients sometimes at two in the morning, and give them financial assistance so they can start their long road to recovery. we give them those hygiene kits that have those basic necessities because they may have lost everything in their homes. and then we assign a caseworker to help them through that long road of recovery. >> that's a good reminder. red cross is an emergency thing. it's also an everyday thing. >> absolutely. >> yeah. thanks so much for being here. we appreciate you talking to you. and thanks for going down there to help our neighbors. and again, to donate you can go to red cross.org/abc. it's really easy if you have your phone out right now and i know you're scrolling, it's 650 in the morning. that's what you do when you get up, right? you can go up to your screen, take a picture of this, and then that qr code is going to take you directly to the donation page if you want to call. if you want to be old fashioned about it, you can. it's a18 hundred red cross. very easy. and thank you again for your donation. a new task force will bring a larger police presence to parts of downtown san francisco. this is going to cover prominent tourist areas like union square, moscone convention center, and yerba buena gardens, areas that were

previously split up between different police districts. the new unit will operate 24 over seven, and sfpd chief bill scott says most importantly, the zone is going to be their sole focus. >> it's really hard when you're going from call to call to concentrate on problems. this effort will allow our officers to have the time they need to actually prevent problems. >> occupancy rates, storefronts not being shuttered, but actually being opened. we will look at all of those statistics in terms of measures of success. >> chief scott says his department will have to move around resources to make it work. but increasing police presence downtown is critical to the city's economic recovery. >> and this morning, we're getting a sneak peek of the nba jerseys for the upcoming all star game. next weekend at chase center. there will be three colors sky blue, navy, and red. the blue jerseys are oakland inspired, with roots of an oak tree on the sides, and the red is inspired by san francisco, highlighting the cable cars and the hills. the game is next sunday at chase center. now the
