the nba all-star game begins. see how fans and businesses are getting ready. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> and good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. here's a live look outside tonight. and the rain has moved out. but the cold is moving in. >> yes. let's get over to spencer christian. it is looking rather frosty of a weekend for us. spencer. >> all right. it's beginning to feel frosty already. here's a look at the satellite radar image. cold air mass moving in. it almost looks cold on this image as it's pushing into the bay area. and that's going to drop temperatures down to the freezing level in some places tonight. we have a freeze warning and a frost advisory in effect for the bay area from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow. those areas under the purple color there, the north bay interior valleys and the eastern santa clara hills are under the freeze warning. and those areas, low temperatures may go as low as 28 degrees in the blue areas. all of the bay area basically, except san francisco and the coastline. the frost advisory is in effect, and in those areas,

lows could drop down to about 33 degrees. and as you look at the projected lows for tonight, you can see we're talking about 31 at santa rosa and ukiah, 28 at lakeport. most inland east bay areas will have lows in the mid 30s. parts of the south bay morgan hill in the low in the low to mid 30s. we'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast and see when it might warm up a little bit later. dan. >> okay. spencer, thanks very much. in the north bay, people living along the russian river in sonoma county can return home. finally, the sheriff's office has downgraded the evacuation order to a warning. residents are advised to keep an eye out in case flooding happens again. sky seven shot footage of at least one home still partially underwater. >> this week's storms are contributing to great ski conditions in the tahoe area for the weekend. much of the area is under a blanket of fresh snow right now. that news had drivers from the bay area hitting the road to get to the resorts. today, officials at boreal ski resort say it is the best conditions they've seen all

season. >> it's just beautiful in the snow up here, you know, looks looks great and peaceful and real nice. i'm happy to get the day off and sneak up to the mountain for a day. >> yeah. nobody knows you snuck up there, right? except for everybody watching. along with all the new snow. sunny skies are in the forecast for saturday and sunday. you can follow along as the forecast changes with the abc seven bay area app. it gives you access to the same live doppler seven our weather team uses to also send alerts with important updates. >> the trump administration has sent an earthquake through the medical research community. the national institutes of health is going to have to cut funding by $4 billion. as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, it's going to affect local researchers who are working on everything from cancer to hiv. >> friday night, a blow to the bay area's medical researchers. >> this is going to be a disaster. >> president trump's administration announcing the national institutes of health is slashing critical funding to

universities and medical centers. >> we will not be able to function because we need the infrastructure, we need the staff. we need people to help us put in the grants. >> the nih cutting what's called indirect cost payments down to 15%. the payments are made to universities in conjunction with the grants the nih doles out for research. the money covers everything from administrative staff to facilities such as labs and top research. universities can typically see rates well above 50%. >> so to go down drastically to 15% was shocking. today. >> doctor monica gandhi is the director of the ucsf center for aids research. >> we will go down to an indirect rate that's so drastically cut, we won't be able to do a lot of our work. >> i'm also very worried about the uncertainty of what's going to happen. >> doctor pamela munster is a professor of medicine at ucsf. her cancer treatment, research and clinical trials are often the last line of hope.

>> my patients who are in clinical trials that are funded by the national cancer institute, are they continuing with their treatment? and like a lot of patients, as you can imagine, are quite anxious. >> meanwhile, doctor gandhi says the impacts will be far reaching. >> everyone who works at ucsf, which is of course, one of the biggest employers in the city of san francisco. they are largely funded by the infrastructure support from the nih. >> as of friday night, the nih funding cuts are set to go into effect monday. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> san francisco is suing the trump administration over sanctuary city policies. the lawsuit challenges the president's executive executive order mandating federal agencies cut funding to local jurisdictions with sanctuary policies. >> since his first term, donald trump has tried different ways to coerce cities into doing the job of the federal government and carrying out federal

immigration enforcement. >> santa clara county joined san francisco as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. the legal action comes a day after the justice department sued the city of chicago and the state of illinois over their sanctuary policies. >> the federal highway administration is halting funding for states to install tens of thousands of electric vehicle chargers. the money was part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed in 2021. now, transportation advocates say that with this uncertainty, cities need to focus more on things like public transit. >> and these changes actually get our our city leaders, our state and regional leaders to focus on true sustainable transportation. >> news of the funding pause is being welcomed by locally. >> san francisco was set to receive $15 million and san jose $12 million. environmental advocates expect california to be less impacted than other states due to california's own aggressive plans to expand electric vehicle infrastructure,

separate from any federal plans. there's a call for change in california following president trump's executive order banning transgender athletes from womens school sports. a group of students, parents and organizations showed their stance in support of the ban at a california interscholastic federation council meeting today. the cif is the governing body for high school sports in the state. >> be brave. stand up for girls. save girls sports. >> i want to strongly exhort each and every one of you to stand up and protect these young girls who have been competing for years in their sport. >> every morning it's something else. so we we're in a lot of pain. i'm open to talking about the regulations to try to make sure there's a level playing field, but this is not what it's being used for. >> cif announced today that it's not wavering from a commitment for inclusion despite trump's order. >> new developments in santa clara county, where a judge has ordered former forty-niner dana stubblefield to be released from prison. this comes after an

appellate court overturned stubblefield's rape conviction late last december. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has reaction from outside the courthouse. >> reporter a victory for former forty-niner dana stubblefield and his attorneys friday in the santa clara county courtroom. a judge ordered stubblefield to be released immediately. >> a significant step for him to be home with his family tonight, where he should be, where he should have been the whole time. >> the order comes after a december ruling by an appellate court overturning his rape conviction. the former forty-niner sentenced to 15 years to life in prison in the case he was found guilty of raping a woman under threat of a gun after inviting her to his home to interview for a babysitting job in 2015. his defense team says the judge blocked key evidence from being admitted, including the accuser's confession that she was a paid sex worker. >> this was the most infected trial i've ever seen. >> stubblefield said. the interaction with the accuser was a paid, consensual transaction. he was convicted in 2020 and a year later, california's racial justice act took effect. the law bars prosecutors from seeking a

conviction on the basis of race, ethnicity and national origin. the appellate court ruled that the prosecution violated the act when it said in its closing argument that it didn't search stubblefield's home for a gun over concerns it would open up a, quote, storm of controversy amid civil unrest at the time over the police killing of george floyd. >> when there were references to mr. stubblefield's race that had nothing to do with the case. that set the appellate court on notice that we need to go back and look carefully at this. and they said that was a violation, and they said he did not get a fair trial. >> that move by the appellate court eventually led to friday's order for release. >> he's legally innocent. he had a legally invalid process, and that's where we are today. >> in the bail hearing friday, prosecutors said calling stubblefield innocent is a misstatement. since the appellate court ruled on the racial justice act, not what the jury decided when stubblefield was convicted. they said the attorney general's office is appealing the overturned conviction to the california supreme court. in a statement following the hearing, the da's

office said in part that justice has been interrupted. and although we are disappointed that the judge released mr. stubblefield from custody while we await a decision from the california supreme court, we remain focused on the sexual assault that occurred, the victim and the need for accountability and community safety. the prosecutor did indicate in court that they would be refiling charges against stubblefield. now, stubblefield had to go back to corcoran state prison in kings county to be released. he and his attorney plan to have a press conference speaking out on wednesday of next week in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> the man convicted of second degree murder for the stabbing of cashapp founder bob lee will be sentenced on may 16th. jurors returned the verdict in december. prosecutors argue that he killed lee after lee introduced his sister to a drug dealer who she testified sexually assaulted her. he refused to appear in court today, though three of his attorneys and his mother were present. second degree murder

days ago, but the pharmacy was still open until today. a private developer wants to turn it into market rate, but a public housing. but a market hearing monday revealed that most people are upset about having nowhere else around to buy their food or pick up medication. >> police department. department. >> what you're watching here is a new look at the intense effort by police to evacuate people, as last month's destructive wildfires spread so quickly across southern california. this new video comes from the pasadena police department. it shows officers going door to door to alert people as the eaton fire rages all around them. >> watch these doors open. >> yes, you have to push it. >> this building's on fire, man. we gotta go, go go go. what's the best way?

>> please don't. under the armpit. >> the video also shows officers inside a nursing home waking up people in and in some cases, placing masks on them and wheeling them to safety. there's also. this also includes dash cam footage showing the tense drive through smoky, burning streets just to get to homes in jeopardy. the eaton fire destroyed thousands of houses and other structures and left at least 17 people dead. altadena residents displaced by the eaton fire are one step closer to some recovery this week. the u.s. army corps of engineers officially began phase two of wildfire debris removal in the city. they have crews working at two pasadena schools ravaged by the fire. los angeles mayor karen bass said at a news conference today that the hazardous cleanup should be finished by the end of the month, followed by residential debris cleanup so the rebuilding can begin in earnest. >> today marks one month since the start of the wildfires that devastated southern california, and we are taking action together for the one california.

putting up and positioning critical infrastructure for the big event. banners and special signage are going up all over chase center. places like dumpling time will be increasing staffing and serving up their specialties. splash bar, which just opened on this friday, will be flooded with sports fans at wooly pig restaurant in san francisco's dogpatch neighborhood. they'll be serving up the fan favorite. >> curry udon with fried chicken is probably one of our most popular dishes. it's obviously a fun play on steph curry from way downtown. >> like many other local businesses, wooly pig is eager and excited to welcome big crowds. >> it's going to be crazy. we've staffed up our team to handle the amount of people that we're expecting to be in this neighborhood. >> that's not all. >> we're partnering with the nba. they have an events app, and you can do a mixed reality check in to earn nba prizes. this is one of the stickers that you'll get when you're checking into our business.

area that's been struggling to bounce back from the pandemic. but that's really great to see. they're having fun. >> that looks like so. >> much fun. oh my gosh, the roller. >> skating rink growing up. that was awesome. >> it's fun. >> roller skating. oh my goodness. all right. and i mean great weather to get outside and do stuff this weekend. i mean cold but cold. >> if it wasn't for the cold, it would actually be a five on the weekend. enjoyment weather. spencer. so who's going to take it down? >> that's so true. sunny skies coming our way. so instead of roller skates, you might want ice skates tomorrow. or at least tomorrow morning. here's a look at what's going on on the satellite radar. composite image a big cold air mass is moving into the bay area. that's going to drop temperatures rather sharply. the winds are pretty light at the moment. only one location shows wind speeds over ten miles per hour. that's bodega bay. but look at the 24 hour temperature change 678 degrees cooler in most locations. a colder, i should say, than at this time last night. so looking out over san francisco from sutro tower, it's 47 here in the city right now, 45 in oakland, also mid 40s at hayward and san jose, 48 half

moon bay and redwood city, 42 degrees. looking down onto the bay and to san francisco. from sutro. from sutro tower, from mount tam 41 degrees. now in many places santa rosa, napa, fairfield and livermore 44, in concord. let's take a look at our forecast headlines. deep chill will settle in overnight. we have frost and freeze alerts in effect. weekend outlook sunny days, but very cold mornings and storms will return around the middle of next week. but let's talk about our frost and freeze alerts or freeze warning and frost advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow for virtually all of the bay area except the city of san francisco and the coastline. now in the dark purple areas here, the eastern santa clara hills and the north bay inland valleys. lows will drop under the frost. frost uh- under the freeze warning is what i'm trying to say. low temperatures will drop down to about 28 degrees in the coldest spots. now, the frost advisory in the blue area, low temperatures in those areas will drop down to about 33 degrees. so it's going to be cold everywhere during

those early morning hours. we're talking about lows of 31 in santa rosa and ukiah, 28 at lakeport. many inland east bay locations will have lows around 33 3435 degrees, even right around the bay shoreline. we're talking about lows of 3839 degrees. only san francisco and half moon bay will have low temperatures that do not drop below 40 degrees. then tomorrow, under sunny skies in the afternoon. look. it will be a pleasant day, but a chilly one. look for highs, mainly ranging from about 55 to about 57 degrees. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. as you can see, we're going to have three consecutive sunny days through monday. but they'll be relatively chilly days with highs only in the mid to upper 50s. then it becomes partly cloudy on tuesday and gets even colder as we move into wednesday, with cold, rain and snow on the bay area peaks. a level one storm thursday, a pretty strong storm, rain and gusty wind. that pattern continues into friday, so enjoy the sunny but chilly weather. and then comes the rainy and chilly weather. all right. >> chilly is consistent.

san francisco will feature several warriors. draymond green and moses moody will be in the skills challenge saturday night. buddy hield will be in the three point shootout. he won that contest in 2020. oakland's own damian lillard also in the contest. in fact he is the defending champion to the nfl. the eagles will try to dethrone the chiefs in super bowl 59 on sunday. philly's off season deal to land saquon barkley. that turned out to be incredible because barkley is a threat to take it to the house every single time he touches the ball. >> every time we go against a team, i am aware that me and the offensive line is a focal point of stopping, so take what they give me and when the opportunities come, make them pay for it. you just have to navigate that and find your way as a team for that year. and so we've been able to play disciplined ball. we've been able to play ball and be on the same page and find ways to win, and we're just looking forward to doing that one more time. >> my favorite video of the week at a siena basketball game. they have a contest for fans. this is joe and he's knocking down shots. if he hits a layup, a
