parklet. all after a police chase that crossed san francisco. people showing up to watch the super bowl ended up in the hospital instead. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. multiple people were hurt in that bad crash this afternoon. it started with a call about a car near the stonestown galleria. police chased the car across the city and all the way to the mission district. when the drivers smashed through a pub's parklet on 24th and south van ness. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn spoke to witnesses and shows us the damage. >> on this sunday night, there's a pile of mangled metal and debris from a destroyed parklet outside a packed bar on 24th and south venice, where people gathered to watch the super bowl. the crash hurt six people, including two people in the car and four people sitting in or near the parklet area. >> then i looked out the window and i saw a car barreling through the parklet. >> police say just after 3 p.m, they responded to buckingham and winston regarding a wanted

vehicle. and when officers tried to stop the suv, the suspects took off. >> it started out in stonestown and ended here. >> police say they were pursuing the suspects. there are a lot of questions about how fast the officers were going and if their lights and sirens were on at the time. were there lights? were there sirens? was there a light? was it a high speed pursuit or what? >> i can't tell you if it was a high speed or not, but to my understanding, the speeds are about 45mph. >> sunday afternoon people were in shock following the crash. this woman did not want to be identified. her friends were sitting inside the parklet. >> he got hit in the head. my other friend got hit on the shoulder. they told me they did not hear any sirens. they did not see any flashing lights. >> peter paulson, his wife and friend, sat at a table on the sidewalk outside the napa tender bar. they weren't inside the parklet, but up against the business, and they watched it all happen. >> and then we heard these tires break loose like someone's out of control in their car. the

structure on the street, people were sitting totally exploded. the car kept coming. i thought i was about to die. >> bar patrons saw two people running from inside the crashed suv. police ran after them and arrested the two women a short distance away. the investigation into the pursuit and crash will continue. >> we take this very seriously. you know, our focus is on traffic and the traffic concerns that the community that that wants us to, you know, help stop. but like this person, you know, fails to yield to a police officer, and we have a job to do. >> in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> well, moving on now to your accuweather forecast as we take a look outside. a chilly night and a rainy week is ahead for the bay area. let's get to abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian tracking our next round of rain and tonight's frigid temperatures. spencer. >> yeah. dion. big changes coming our way midweek, but let's start with the cold air. tonight we have a frost advisory

and a freeze warning in effect for the bay area from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow. this covers virtually all of the bay area. that area in blue. the lighter blue closer to the coast represents a frost advisory. so areas in that i mean locations in that alert may see low temperatures go down to about 32 degrees tonight. now, under the dark blue or the purple, that's where the freeze warning is in effect. that's the north bay interior valleys, the east bay valleys, and the eastern santa clara hills. low temperatures may drop as low as 26 degrees in those areas. so it's going to be cold everywhere tonight. so these are our forecast headlines overnight. and tomorrow morning. frost and freeze alerts in effect again next two days we'll see clouds increase. rain arrives late tuesday. but the bigger event rain wise comes on wednesday wednesday through friday. as a matter of fact, here's a forecast animation showing early arrival of rain tuesday night. then into wednesday and thursday. we expect the most intense storm activity with heavy downpours, strong gusty winds and big snow in the sierra. i'll have more

details coming up in my accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later on. >> here we go again. all right spencer, thanks. well, more rain is on the way ande are not done cleaning up from the last round. the north bay is still recovering from last week's storms that brought flooding and evacuations. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to a first responders who are concerned about the damage that even more rain could bring. >> there's a big cleanup happening inside this guerneville rv park, where flooding prompted evacuations last week. >> most of this was underwater or pretty close to it. >> angel barger needed rescuing. with more rain in the forecast, neighbors are stressed about it happening again. >> if the river doesn't go down anymore than it has, you never know. and high tides. you just got to be prepared. >> all of this neighborhood was under three feet of water. cars too. here's the high water mark to prove it. >> so we're kind of ready to do what we have to do. >> this guerneville resort was

under water last week. today, flooding has receded. furniture now drying out. >> see, that log was underneath here. look at the material. so this is going to cave back to the road if they don't do something about it. >> monte rio fire chief steve backman is checking out the beginning of a possible landslide on this mountain road above the russian river. >> this is the kind of stuff we're up against. and as you were asking earlier, if we get one more rain, we're going to have more and more of these. >> on tuesday, heavy rain triggered a mudslide that swept this unoccupied forestville home into the russian river. parts of the road crumbled, too. near santa rosa, all eyes on this hill where a landslide destroyed a home. no one was hurt, but more than a dozen neighbors remain under evacuation warnings in case the earth starts to move again. >> clear. >> back in monte rio, chief backman is watching the weather. he says the ground is already too saturated. what are your concerns about more rain this week? >> landslides are. our big thing is landslides and trees down because the country is getting so softened up. everything's

battery plant fire. erin brockovich is leading a virtual town hall meeting on tuesday to discuss environmental health hazards after last month's fire. attorneys will also discuss the next steps in their lawsuit against vistra energy, which runs the plant, and p-g-and-e's, which uses the power stored there. our next advancer a pivotal vote on a first in the state plan on homelessness. the fremont city council is set to vote on an ordinance that would make it a crime to aid or abet a homeless encampment, punishable by a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. aid workers are concerned that their work to bring food or supplies to encampments could get them arrested. the mayor has said they would not be targeted. the ordinance passed an initial vote and is set for a final vote on tuesday. our next advancer the latest round of job cuts at san francisco schools are beginning to take shape. san francisco unified superintendent maria su

francisco as well. eagles fans watched the game at north star cafe, with celebrations spilling out onto the streets. well, now that super bowl 59 is over, the bay area is on deck. the countdown is on to the big game at levi's stadium, and the preparations are well underway. santa clara will host its second super bowl just under a year from now and tomorrow, officials from the nfl and new orleans will pass the ceremonial football to a bay area delegation, including san jose mayor matt mahan. mahan is among the bay area officials who spent the weekend in new orleans for the game. his office says he spent time looking at other events in the city happening around the super bowl. levi's stadium is in the middle of a $200 million renovation to prepare changing climates and changing security for some of the bay area's biggest pride events. lgbtq leaders explained the nationwide discussion to make sure this summer's

concerned. >> but amid the worry, there's no backing down. >> i'm going to walk down market street in front of that parade, and i'm going to make every appearance i can so that people put a face to trans people. >> tara campbell, abc seven ne. >> the city of pinole is about to lose its safeway. the city learned last week that the store will close. the safeway is located in the appian 8-80 shopping center and is set to close on april 4th. the city says the owners have not put the property on the market, and are planning for it to remain a supermarket. this is another blow for grocery shoppers in our reg. last week, the safeway in san francisco's fillmore district closed for good despite community efforts to save the store. a san francisco health company is facing backlash and scrutiny from lawmakers over its super bowl ad. you might have seen the ad by hims and hers pushing its weight loss drugs. senators dick durbin and roger marshall, a democrat and a

republican, say the commercial leaves out safety information and risks misleading patients. the company's medication is not fda approved, so it doesn't have to follow the same rules around disclosing side effects in advertising. the lawmakers want to close that loophole. hims and hers says it is following the law and is happy to work with congress on patient choice and affordability. well, check this out. san francisco's outer sunset neighborhood celebrated the year of the snake today. the sunset lunar new year festival was held at 37th and pacheco, and included cultural performances and a cooking demonstration. organizers say the family friendly event is a chance to celebrate chinese american history and how it has evolved in the sunset district. well, abc seven is the official home of the 2025 san francisco chinese new year parade. can't believe it, but we are less than a week away. you can watch the live parade saturday, february 15th starting at 6 p.m. you can

watch it live and on abc seven wherever you happen to stream abc seven news. and spencer, one of the first questions i had for you today. yes. was predicting whether or not it would rain on saturday night. >> well, there's a pretty good chance right now that we'll have some leftover leftover from friday's storm into saturday morning. but saturday afternoon and evening might actually be dry. >> fingers crossed. >> yeah. fingers crossed. let's take a look at what's happening right now on the satellite radar. composite image a flow of cold air. what else? coming from our north. the wind speeds right now are pretty light. most wind speeds. yeah, all of them are under ten miles per hour. and it's absolutely calm in some spots. and the 24 hour temperature change shows the big chill settling in. it's several degrees cooler in most bay area locations right now than at this time last night. here's the view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco, where it's currently 46 degrees. we have 42 at oakland. hayward 40. 44 at san jose. upper 30s at redwood city and half moon bay. pretty chilly there. nice view from mount tam looking down onto parts of san francisco and the

bay. all of these readings, most of these are in the 30s already. 37 at santa rosa. 39 napa. petaluma. down to 34. as is fairfield. concord 41. 36 at livermore. looking across the embarcadero now, we'll check out our forecast headlines overnight. and tomorrow morning we have frost and freeze alerts in effect once again. next two days will bring a little bit of an increase in clouds. not so much tomorrow, but more on tuesday as rain moves in late tuesday in the evening or nighttime hours, and then wednesday through friday. just more rain and wind coming our way. let's talk about the cold air alerts, though. the freeze warning and frost advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow. the darker area here represents the areas covered by the freeze warning, where low temperatures may drop as low as 26 degrees. we're talking about the north bay interior valleys, the east bay valleys, and the eastern santa clara hills. under the blue. closer to the coast is where the frost advisory will be in effect. low temperatures in these areas may drop as low as 32 degrees. so here's a look at our projected lows for tonight 30 at santa rosa and

at livermore, 32 down south at morgan hill, 32 also at concord right around the bay shoreline, 35 to 38 degrees, which is very cold for bayshore locations. san francisco and half moon bay will be the only locations where temperatures are not expected to drop below 40 degrees. highs tomorrow under mostly sunny skies will be generally in a tight range from 55 to about 58 degrees. 1 or 2 locations like fairfield and san jose may get above 58 degrees. so here's our futurecast. starting tuesday night, as the first wave of rain arrives that will continue through wednesday. then a brief break before the next storm. a stronger, more intense one comes in on thursday that will bring us heavy downpours, strong gusty wind, lots of snow likely in the sierra that will continue into friday, and there may be even more going into saturday morning. before we get the break we're hoping for the chinese new year parade. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast notice a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale on wednesday. that's going to be a cold one, by the way,

more rain. the midwest and northeast are digging out after several inches of snow. the winter weather made a mess and there is more to come. jenn sullivan shows us the cleanup. >> millions of people in the northeast digging out of the snow sunday after a powerful winter storm pummeled much of the region. busy new york city streets blanketed in white. parts of the city getting more than three inches of snow, according to the national weather service. preliminary snow totals show some areas in new york and other states got

three san diego county teenagers have died from the flu this flu season. that is according to the county's health department. none of them were vaccinated for the flu. the cdc says this is the most intense flu season in the u.s. in the past 15 years. health officials say it's not too late to get a vaccine to protect yourself. flu season typically runs from october through may. happening tomorrow, cal fire is expected to start updating its wildfire risk assessments for cities across northern california. the new analysis could dramatically change which cities must follow. heightened wildfire safetyollow. rules. cities and counties with local fire departments not relying on cal fire have not gotten updated hazard maps in 13 years. the state uses those maps to decide which places must follow fire safe building codes. cities and counties will have four months to update their rules. also happening tomorrow, meta employees will find out if they'll be laid off as part of a

new round of performance based job cuts. affected workers would be sent an email to their work and personal addresses on monday morning. last month, facebook's parent company said it planned to cut 5% of its workforce. meta officials said workers who are the lowest performers would be let go, with plans to backfill the positions later this year. the future of artificial intelligence is evolving fast, and this week, international leaders and top names in the tech world will meet to discuss what's next. an international summit on ai regulation kicks off in paris tomorrow. leaders from google spoke ahead of the summit about the challenges of regulating a technology that is changing fast. >> it's important to regulate ai, but it's important to get the regulations right, and that's hard when the technology itself is not fully understood and it's so fast moving. and it also needs to be international because ai is going to affect all countries, the whole world. and as a technology and it's it

tonight on a study that's generated a lot of buzz for people considering an electric vehicle. a bay area research team recently estimated that the batteries from electric vehicles last far longer than first believed. but why is that? abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma took a field trip to the research lab to understand the science behind the discovery and how it could help keep us climate ready. >> let's go for a ride. >> on the winding roads around stanford. we're about to test drive an important discovery. our wheelman is professor william chu from the slack national accelerator laboratory. >> all right, here we go. can i give you a jolt, professor? >> chu is demonstrating the real world driving conditions that may help ev batteries last much longer than even the manufacturers estimate. but first, it might help to tap the brakes and take a look at why those battery life projections are so different. to do that, fellow researcher alexei zhislin braved the cooling fan noise to

take us into a testing lab at the stanford battery center. >> so here we have a room full of cyclers and environmental chambers to cycle, meaning charging and discharging batteries. >> and he says the team used this row of small oven door chambers to study how the ev batteries age, but in a new way, instead of just draining them at a constant rate. they also introduce variables electronic starts and stops that more closely mimic actual driving conditions. >> so more realistic or representative of real driving. and you can see both the voltage response of the battery and the current are actually very dynamic. >> dynamic and surprising. they say the data suggests average ev battery life may be roughly 40% longer than estimated, a result that's the opposite of what the team expected. >> we were blown away when the result was exactly the opposite, that when we use the batteries in a real setting, the lifetime was much longer than expected.

millions of ev owners. at stanford, drew tuma, abc7 news. >> that's fascinating. the slack team tested nearly 100 lithium ion batteries for more than two years to gather the data. they say pairing the results with artificial intelligence could potentially lead to better battery designs as well. well, sometimes we all need to take a moment to stop and smell the magnolias. magnolias are in bloom at the san francisco botanical garden. art enthusiasts gathered at the garden this morning for a drawing class, using fountain pens and watercolors to capture the flowers. artist eileen goldenberg has been leading this class for a few years now. >> you know, i think everybody's brain needs a rest. we are all stressed out, and drawing means you can't think about anything else. you can only draw. and you look at a beautiful flower like these and it's just you just relax. and that's the best thing. >> the magnolias have a long bloom, period. more than 200 trees will be in bloom at the

garden now through march. and i am looking at the clock. and my brain. maybe your brain needs a rest. >> oh, yes, i could use a rest. but there's something about flowers that sort of makes you smile. that the air is fragrant, you know? >> calming. >> absolutely. and we could all use that right now. here's a look at what's happening with our weather. it's going to be very cold in the early morning hours and through. in fact, the entire morning hours from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m, we have a frost advisory in effect and a freeze warning there in the dark blue. there, farther away from the coast, represents where the freeze warning will be, and low temperatures in those areas may drop as low as 26 degrees in the area of blue, closer to the coast. that's the frost advisory, where lows may drop down to about 32 degrees. any way you look at it, it's going to be cold in the bay area tomorrow morning. overnight lows 30 at santa rosa, 30 at livermore. mid to upper 30s around the bay shoreline, which is extremely low for those locations. and highs tomorrow will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. not much higher than that. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we get a few more clouds coming into the picture on tuesday. a level

in his debut. with golden state the most for a warrior in his team debut since kevin durant in 2016. last night, the dubs trailed in chicago by as many as 24 and then poured it on them to lead by as many as 25. since butler typically plays slow and the warriors like to go fast, there was some question about how he would fit in with steph curry. but curry had 24 points in the third quarter and finished with a game high 34, while butler got to the free throw line 13 times and made sure the warriors didn't blow yet another late lead. everybody was all smiles after this one. >> you know, they say opposites attract and a lot of ways in life, and i don't think i could be a better compliment to him and vice versa in the sense that they're not leaving him ever. probably two people would never leave him. so there's so much space for everybody else. and i get the easy job. >> he's like the exact opposite player of me, which is kind of funny. like i'm shooting 16 threes. he shot one. he's dominating the paint. i'm dominating outside the
