>> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> it is not over yet. today's strong storm has been punctuated by gaps of sunshine. i even saw a rainbow. small breaks from the downpours and gusty winds that have done damage to the bay area. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. live doppler seven is tracking today's storm, which ranks at three on the exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. >> and that is why we have live team coverage to see the impact it's having where you live. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan and anser hassan have been out in the rain all day long. >> we'll get to both of them in a moment. but first, let's hear from abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya, what more will this storm bring? >> dan and ama, you know the storm could produce some more flooding on the roadways now that the ground is saturated. but look at this picture. it is absolutely saying winter. this is from the sierra. the snow is coming down right now. chain controls on all roads leading up to the

mountains. so keep in mind that this is basically going to be hard to get up there. winter storm warning is going. sorry, the computer is not advancing here. let me see if i can advance from this way. show you live doppler seven here in just a moment. statewide you can see. and we have rain. we have snow. still not advancing. apologies for that. we had the computer just moments ago. here. here you go. we've had thunderstorms as well. so looking at southern california they've been seeing some strong thunderstorms as well. locally here we've had our share of some downpours and still some showers moving through the region. as we get you in closer here right around the santa cruz area. gilroy street level radar across highway 101 leavesley road. watch out. downpours will cause more flooding on the roadways. the sunset district, daly city we are seeing some heavier rain developing right at this hour, and we do have flood advisories going for parts of the east bay and the

south bay. we also have a flood warning for sonoma county and a flood warning for alameda county. these are the rivers and the streams and creeks that are running high, so watch out. gusts to 35 right now in livermore. oakland, 30 miles an hour. we've seen gusts at the higher elevations and at sfo up to 60. oakland hills 55. right now it's a level three storm. watch out as the ground is saturated. any more rain is just going to exacerbate things. so 8:00 tonight we're going to still see some pockets of rain. 1030 becoming a little more widespread. this is a three chance of thunder, gusty winds and dangerous surf here. a live view from our tower cameras. it's either rain or snow, and numerous reports of storm damage from debris flows to heavy rain and flooding on the roadways. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast that includes the weekend coming up. >> all right. thank you, sandy. and as the next round of storms moves into the bay area, you can track them using the same live doppler seven our weather team uses. it's available right now on the abc seven bay area app.

download it for the latest forecast and updates on the conditions where you live. >> some people had to leave their homes today because of the storm. on this map of evacuations, you can see how quiet it is right now. currently, there are a few very small pockets in monterey county with evacuation warnings. everyone else pretty much okay for the moment now. santa cruz county lifted evacuation orders just a few hours ago. excessive rainfall overnighter to rise several feet in felton. neighbors in felton grove were put on notice. >> i'm right on river road and my window actually peers out just into the river so i can see the level rising and we can see it if it breaches. >> where's the point of concern level for you. as soon as it breaches, we're gone. >> if it breaches, they're gone. the scotts valley community center remains open for anyone who needs a safe place to go. >> now to the north bay. take a look at gold ridge organic farm in sebastopol today. heavy rain and look at the wind blowing those trees over. abc seven news

reporter suzanne fawn is in sebastopol and joins us live with a look at the impact of today's storm. suzanne. >> so, ama, it's been wet and particularly windy out here all day. i've needed a couple extra bobby pins to keep this cap on my head. now, emergency crews tell me that they are worried they've got extra staff on hand because they're worried about the possibility of landslides and water rescues and trees toppling on power lines and people. heavy downpours drenching the region again. downtown sebastopol this afternoon hit hard by sheets of rain. that means ponding water on roads and a reason for drivers to hold on to that steering wheel a lot tighter. here's how it looked in forestville. authorities remind drivers again and again if you see flooded signs or road closed signs, don't go around them. don't do what this pickup driver did on green valley road today. the water went over the truck's hubcaps and tickled the bottom of his bumper. he stalled for a

bit, but then managed to keep on going. >> we can't emphasize enough how dangerous it is. we have had people die in each one of these storms. last week was pretty crazy for us. we ended up having about 10 or 11 swift water rescues, so our crews actually going into the water for people that drove in. >> the drenching rain, the thunderstorms, the strong, gusty winds are all reasons why emergency crews have staffed up. authorities are worried more trees could come crashing down, and they're worried about the possibility of more landslides. >> the sheriff's department, in coordination with our police department, does have a number of evacuation warnings in place, and sonoma county has redtagged a couple homes. >> during a major storm last week. a massive landslide in the deer trail area of rincon valley. it sent mud into the side of a home just yesterday. a drone captured this photo of another big risk authorities are closely monitoring. >> yes, there has been some additional land movement in that area. there was a new

fissure that was developed adjacent to the original slide. the city of santa rosa has been in communication with the property owner. >> and here's another reason why you should not go around the flooded sign or the road closed sign. sonoma county fire district says that if the chp comes out, you could be hit with a hefty fine and get two points on your record. live in sebastopol, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> yeah. that's serious. all right, suzanne, thanks very much. in the east bay, the storm has made a real mess of traffic all day long. and roadways are not the only issue. flooding is a concern as well. abc seven news reporter anser hassan is live in oakland, where crews have been very busy cleaning up after. >> yeah, that's right dan. right now, no rain up here in the oakland hills. about two hours ago, crews were able to open up this road. it was blocked in up both directions because of flooding. as you mentioned, all day, flooding has been a problem for commuters throughout the

east bay. late morning crews were able to open the connector ramp from southbound 680 to westbound 580 in dublin. it was shut down during the morning commute due to flooding. >> the heavy rain causes debris to move over the roadway and then over the drains, which causes the flooding. >> kylie musselman with hayward chp, says early morning flooding also impacted traffic near strowbridge on 580 in castro valley. she says it's important that drivers adjust their driving habits accordingly. >> they think, oh, it's raining and rain causes crashes. rain doesn't cause the crashes. people not addressing their driving habits to the rain is what causes crashes. >> musselman says the biggest problem they see is people driving too fast on wet roads. another big issue when drivers don't turn on their headlights. >> it's not so that you can see. it's so that other people can see you. so on a gray day, a vehicle behind me, a gray vehicle with no lights on in the rain. it's really, really hard to see that vehicle. >> from roadways to waterways. a flood advisory was issued for alameda creek. the creek flows

behind everett bender's house in union city. he isn't too concerned about the flooding in his area, but understands the risk. >> i do look over the fence sometimes. that is a creek and that's what it's for. as i suppose a spillway or overflow or some overflow. >> in oakland, crews were busy removing several fallen trees. this massive 40 year old pine tree fell blocking skyline boulevard. fire officials say many of these big trees are at the end of their life, and strong gusts of wind and rain are enough to knock them down. >> these 40 year old monterey pines. they are dropping. we've had them drop a number of times over the last couple of weeks. we want people to be prepared with a go bag. just be ready to go. and for residents up here in the oakland hills, when these trees do block the roadway, we do have concerns. there's one way in and one way out and some of these neighborhoods. >> fire officials say another concern downed power lines. they say if you see one, assume that it's live. don't drive over it and immediately contact p-g-and-e's or law enforcement.

reporting live anser hassan abc seven news. >> play it safe. okay. thanks very much. this is a live look at all of the power outages in the bay area from p-g-and-e's online tracker. it's been busy and we just saw a pretty significant outage pop up right near downtown pleasant hill. and orange square means there is anywhere from 500 to 5000 customers without electricity. >> all right. we continue to monitor that. but we want to talk about nba all-star weekend, which is kicking off in san francisco. and of course, the fans were met with the strong winds and heavy rain this morning. but that did not stop crowds from lining up for today's events. abc seven news reporter monica madden has more. well, it. >> is dry outside now, but that did not compare to the rain we saw earlier when san francisco kicked off the start to the nba all star weekend. now, with some of the biggest names in basketball here in the bay area. organizers say they're not going to let this weather get in the way of a good time. rain or shine. >> it's been very wet

waiting in the rain, but we hear there's a surprise guest. >> nba fans are weathering the storm for the all star studded events thursday. dozens of fans lining up for pop up shops and appearances from warriors champions like festus ezeli. >> wind. what's wind? what's rain? we're not soft, we're damnation. this is what we do. this is what we're about. we're here to celebrate. we're here to light it up. >> spokesperson for the warriors tells abc seven news that some events have been moved around because of the rain. but other than thursday's varsity tipoff event getting canceled, all events are moving forward as scheduled. >> this is the nba all star game weekend. you want to miss that, that's on you. i say don't do it. we've done so much working with our community partners, with the mayor, with the city, with the nba, with the warriors to make this happen. and it's exciting. >> city leaders saying they're ready for the frenzy this weekend, hoping no one rains on san francisco's parade. >> everything is happening. this is the weekend to

in today's stormy weather. top right, 101 in san jose. bottom left corner is emeryville. in 80, in emeryville. that's live doppler seven right there in the middle of your screen. it's surrounded by live views of traffic from all around the bay area. bay bridge toll plaza on the bottom right. moving on pretty well. golden gate of the top left. also moving along pretty smoothly, but it's backed up on those other two highways, 80 and 101, as you saw. well, a haf dozen earthquakes hit hayward today. the biggest one was 3.6

in magnitude. it hit at 2:00 this afternoon. the smallest earthquake was just 1.9 magnitude. here's what they looked like on our abc seven seismograph. there were no reports of any damage from the small quakes. we would not expect that with quakes that small. >> well, thousands will be making their way to san francisco this weekend for the nba all star game, one of the most popular events is the nba crossover, where fans can shoot hoops and even dunk. >> yeah, there's a massive setup at ■the moscone center, and it opens to the public tomorrow. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is there now. j.r. how are you liking the nba crossover? >> well we had a great time this afternoon ama thank you for asking. and i think a lot of other people are going to have a great time tonight. it's not open to the public yet but some of the vip get to go in. and i just want to pan off here to show you one of the lines to get through security tonight, to take a sneak peek of what is really a hands on family fun

event. and as we talk about this, i do want to go to the video because it's similar to the nfl experience where you get to do different things, except it's basketball and all of that. it's not just other people too. you can see this guy on the at&t slam dunk basket, but you get to do that too. i was involved in the dunking basket as well. it almost feels like cheating though, because they have it so low that it will be perfect for all of the kids who come out here this weekend. $50 for adults to come out here, 25 for kids. we basically tested everything this afternoon. those with the nba talked about this event and say at least 100 nba or former nba players will be there. >> for kids. one of the most amazing parts of doing an event like this is to be able to see their faces light up and be able to, you know, meet some of their favorite players and get their favorite jersey and really take part in something that is special. coming to the bay area.

twin peaks area in the east bay macarthur boulevard into oakland, heading out towards alameda. watch out. the roadways are definitely wet and it's lighter around san jose. you will notice willow glen area los gatos, santa cruz mountains has seen its share of some heavy rain. as we take a look at the flood watch. that's the area shaded in green, the darker green. it's in effect until 10 p.m. saturday. so now that the ground is saturated, we're still going to see the possibility of flooding on the streams creeks. it takes a little while for it to run off. i do have some change to report to you. the high wind warning was just dropped. it's now just a wind advisory. gusts up to 55 miles an hour until 10 a.m. tomorrow. could still knock down some tree limbs and cause a few outages, so be aware of that. here is the w from our exploratorium camera, where you can clearly see the rain falling in san francisco. and it is snowing. this is the view from zephyr cove. chain controls on all roads going up

to the mountains. here's a look at live doppler seven and you can see it is just snowing heavily across the region that winter storm warning until 10 p.m. above 4500ft. when all is said and done, 2 to 5ft of snow is expected. all right, i just updated these rain totals almost a half a foot of rain in the last 24 hours in ben lomond, 1.70 san francisco almost two and a half there in santa rosa closing in on three inches in san rafael. about an inch and a half in oakland, over two inches in napa. concord 1,401.41. in san jose, you'll notice hayward over two inches of rain. your temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s as we check out the storm impact scale through tonight, we're keeping it as a three. downpours at times. gusty winds, thunderstorm chance diminishing now as the night goes on. dangerous surf continuing. 7 p.m. you will notice some pockets of downpours across the region. 8:00 you're still going to

be dealing with some showers. little more widespread around 11 p.m. and then tomorrow morning we still have some more showers developing in the early part of the hours. then it's gone by the time the late morning hours arrive. so rainfall, additional rainfall, anywhere from a couple hundredths of an inch to about 4/10 there. in ukiah, the winds are still gusty, not nearly as strong as we head into 11 p.m. over 30 mile an hour winds along the coast and then they really drop off. it will be breezy tomorrow morning, but nothing like what we saw today. wind gusts today over 60 miles an hour up in the marin county hills and at sfo earlier in the day. high surf warning going until 3 a.m. saturday. right now those wave heights are building about a foot 12ft at bodega bay and point arena. up to 45 foot breakers expected, so it's definitely dangerous. probably best to stay away from the coast. 3040 morning starts out with a few showers tomorrow afternoon. you're going to see some sun breaks, 40 and 50 on your highs. and if you are going to the chinese new year parade this weekend, we have

the nba all star weekend. there's a lot happening. it's going to be mostly cloudy at 4 p.m, temperatures in the mid 50s, dry for the parade at 6:00 and then cooling down. you'll need those layers low 50 later on at night, as the accuweather seven day forecast shows you. we have some changes coming. it's a level one early tomorrow mog for valentine's day. after that, you have some dry skies if you want to go out and celebrate. dry for the parade. a chance of a few showers in the north bay on sunday and then next week is certainly milder, and we have an opportunity for some wet weather on wednesday, but models are not in agreement yet. >> okay, all right, will be a nice change for a bit. absolutely. thanks, andy. >> all right. coming up next. building a better and safer bay

vice mayor. diego. no. councilmember. nogales. yes. >> uh. the resolution passes 4 to 1. >> south san francisco joins belmont and redwood city this week in supporting measure a, it would give the san mateo county board of supervisors the power to remove sheriff corpus from office. she is accused of corruption, nepotism and retaliation within the sheriff's department. she denies those allegations. >> obviously, safety is a big part of building a better bay area, and today, the city of oakland expanded its security camera network to the infamous hegenberger corridor. the expansion is a part of a public safety initiative to install nearly 500 license plate reading cameras throughout oakland. there is no word on how many will be placed along hegenberger. they come with a $150,000 price tag, and officials are hopeful they will help deter crime in 2024. that in and out on hegenberger cited the safety of staff and customers as the reason it closed a restaurant for the first time ever. that same

storm watch because there is very much still a storm to watch. check out live doppler seven, which is tracking the wet weather. >> that's right. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel tracking it all for us, sandhya. >> yeah. that's right. ama and dan. let's take a look a live picture right now from our emeryville camera. getting across 80. maybe a bit dicey. as you can see, the rain drops on our lens. looking at live doppler seven, you'll notice that we continue to see showers rotating through here. so as we get you into street level radar, seeing some rain around cupertino, campbell, saratoga, it is steady across that region, pouring across parts of emeryville, piedmont. uh- 8-80 i do want to show you

some of the rainfall rates in this region. heading across 24, about an inch 1.44 per hour. if it continues to hold there, flood advisories are going for parts of the east and south bay. winds are gusty still. oakland hills 55 miles an hour. this is a level three storm. it is bringing sierra snow and southern california has already seen storm damage as well. in the burn scar areas, everything from flash flooding to debris flows. i'll be back with another weather update coming right up. dan. >> all right. thank you. sandhya. the east bay is home to the biggest current p-g-and-e's power outage. you see it there? roughly 2000 customers in pleasant hill are without power. that's that orange section on the p-g-and-e's map. the utility company blames the storm and has no estimate of when power will be back. in the south bay, heavy downpours caused uvas creek to spill over its banks. gilroy officials shut down silvas crossing because of flooding. forced people on the other side to find a different route. locals say when heavy rain falls, it is common to see this roadway

shut down. >> and some of the strongest winds we've seen from this storm have been along the ct on the peninsula. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been following this storm all day along the san mateo county coast. >> dan, i'm here along the coast. the rain has been on and off for most of the day, but the wind has been very persistent since the early morning hours. and officials say it's that wind that is causing the most problems. strong wind and heavy rain hitting along the san mateo county coast thursday in half moon bay. city officials say they've been preparing for the storm all week. >> monitoring our waterways, cleaning debris and brush out of our storm drains and our streets, responding to tree limbs down from the wind. >> that wind, the primary concern for p-g-and-e's. >> wind, can cause otherwise healthy trees to uproot. it can break branches and have them fall into our lines. debris flies through the air and can make contact with power lines. >> the wind strength on full display earlier in the day, when

a tree was knocked over in a residential area. the tree shutting down part of the street as crews worked to remove it quickly. p-g-and-e's says it pre-positioned crews up and down the san mateo county coast in preparation for thursday's storm. >> especially in areas like half moon bay. it may take a little while to get equipment there from other parts of the peninsula, so that's why we like to pre-position and be ready. >> further north of the pacifica pier, some young fishermen were determined not to let the bad weather ruin their day. >> we kind of actually planned to already, and we weren't going to let the weather stop us. we just decided, you know, fish are biting. it's nice and shady, so pretty good weather to go fishing. >> but while they might have been enjoying the stormy weather, others were not. that included andy ley, who just moved to the bay area from hawaii. are you missing hawaii? a little bit right now? >> yes, absolutely. i never got below like 65. so this is definitely different. >> and if she wasn't enjoying the stormy weather, her dog might have been even more disappointed. >> he's more of a in the sun at the beach kind of dog. but we're

making it work. >> now, in addition to the wind, the other thing that officials are looking out for is, of course, localized flooding. they're advising people if you're on the roads and you see an area that is flooded, do not try to drive through the standing water. instead, turn around and find an alternate route. i'm in half moon bay. tim johns, abc seven news. >> the capitola wharf closed today as the storm hit the santa cruz coastline. it will reopen saturday morning. storms last year heavily damaged the wharf. the santa cruz wharf will be closed tomorrow because of the storm. here's a live look in santa cruz. beaches will also be closed. everything is expected to reopen on saturday and we're tracking the weather with live doppler seven. you can to look at your screen. now just take out your phone, scan the qr code that's right in front of you there. super easy. that will take you to abc seven news.com, where you can stream live doppler seven in real time. >> an absolutely stunning admission from oakland today, the city facing a $129 million budget deficit, just found

nearly $8 million of extra money. this could mean fire stations that are temporarily closed, like stations 25 and 28 could reopen. abc seven news reporter louis pena explains that good news could be a bad sign about how the city's finances have been managed. >> a shocking discovery for a city facing a $129 million budget deficit, millions of dollars of excess funds found after oakland city officials made deep cuts to services, including closing multiple fire stations. this year. >> we've had fires where it took nearly 20 minutes for the entirety of the engines and trucks to get there. we've had cpr calls where the closest firehouse was nowhere near. >> today, three oakland council members announced a proposal to use this discovered money and reopen closed fire stations and prevent the closure of four others. how much money was your team able to find, and where is this money coming from? >> it's been a year. it's approximately $8 million. and i

doing a number on air travel. you're looking at both live doppler seven and san francisco international airport. it's facing more weather issues than other bay area airports, more than 500 delayed flights and 50 canceled flights. two bay area transportation agencies could be audited to find out where our bridge toll money goes. here is a live look at drivers crossing the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see it's wet out there too. tolls went up to $8 at the start of the year. state senator david cortez wants california to audit the metropolitan transportation commission and the bay area toll authority, which it manages. together, they're in charge of tolls, including how to

coming our way. sandhya. >> yeah. we have a little bit more rain to go and some windy weather. let's take a look at live doppler seven. you can see that the atmospheric river. the storm is still feeding us showers right now, so hang on to the umbrellas. as a matter of fact, we are seeing downpours just kind of stalled out over parts of the east bay from orinda to piedmont, heading into walnut creek. this is street level radar, so picking up some intense rain there. campbell's, cupertino, sunnyvale. it's lighter. as we widen the picture here. there are urban and small stream flood advisories still going for parts of the east bay and the south bay, as we've already seen stream flooding, roadway flooding gusts right now 57 miles an hour. oakland hills this is a level three storm. it's a strong storm. and as we go, hour by hour, i'm going to show you what you can expect at 730 tonight. still some showers. they become a little more widespread in coverage by 10 p.m. and then tomorrow, in the wee hours of the morning. we still have some wet weather, but this storm does drop down to a level one for the early morning hours, and then it's
