6:00 pm
starts right now. >> excitement is building in san francisco from bleachers and barricades for the chinese new year parade to buckets and bling for nba all star weekend. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. get ready for what could be the biggest weekend of the year for san francisco with events drawing national, even international visitors. we have team coverage on all of the excitement. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is checking the forecast for rain. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live, with the final preparations for the chinese new year parade. >> but we begin tonight with abc seven news sports director larry beil live at chase center. with all the excitement of nba all star weekend. hey, larry. >> hey. hey, dan. nba all-star weekend. it is an extremely important event not only for the city of san francisco, but for the entire bay area. and the
6:01 pm
reason for that is the bay area will be playing host to three major sporting events in the next year and a half. we're talking about nba tonight and through this weekend. after that, you've got the super bowl at levi's stadium and then bowl you've got the world cup in the summer of 2026. and everybody knows the city of san francisco has taken a beating with its reputation for the past few years. so an organization called the bay area host committee was formed to help deal with event logistics, trying to foster some economic growth, and also remind fans the bay area is a global destination. >> what a great week, right? we are showing the world who we are. i think with announcing a super bowl, doing the handoff with the commissioner, coming back here, kicking off an all star game week, it's a great time to be in the bay. it's a great time to be a bay area resident. >> to bring the world's best. and for the local kids and, you know, other people to be inspired by these performances and the stories.
6:02 pm
uh- it's going to leave a big legacy, i think, for the community. >> for chris. he's such a great ambassador for the bay area. now, last year was maybe the worst all star game ever because nobody played any defense. the players didn't care. the league decided to change everything, starting with the rising stars. so you got rookies and second year players, along with g league all stars. four teams total one plays two, three plays four and then the winners meet to determine the rising stars squad that will make the final four on sunday. and then that is when the regular all stars join the competition. so think abouts steph curry team absolutely loaded with lebron james and kevin durant, just to name a few. but the goal is to bring some new energy with this new format. >> i'm very excited. just adds a new depth and new element to the rising stars game. i think we're all going to come out and compete and it's going to be a lot of fun. all of us, freshman and sophomore are. our goal is to be an all star one day. and so to have this kind of mini
6:03 pm
opportunity of playing in the all star game without being an all star, i think us just bringing that competitive spirit will make the guys that have been all stars, you know, ten, 15 times, you know, play harder. and i think that's just what everybody wants to see on sunday. i think the vets obviously they don't want to lose. and if we play them, i know we're going to be playing pretty freaking hard. so i think they'll they'll try to take it to us a little bit. they might coast for a second, but if we put it on them early, they might they might start trying. so we'll see. >> so one of these rising ss teams is going to make the final four on sunday. theoretically you could see warriors superstar steph curry facing off against trayce jackson-davis who we just saw, or brandon podemski or even g league or pat spencer. if then g leaguers can advance that far. in case you're wondering, each player on the winning team on sunday gets $125,000. i know for
6:04 pm
players making 40 or $50 million. perhaps not that big a deal, but you know what? $125,000 dan and ama. it's not nothing. it's true. live at chase center larry beil, abc seven sports. >> i'll pass it along. >> i'll play if they're going. >> to play that kind of money. >> all right. we're counting down to the 2025 chinese new year parade now less than 24 hours away, tickets for bleacher seats are sold out. you can watch the parade live right here and everywhere you stream abc seven. we will give you the best seat in the house, and the final preparations are now well underway. >> let's go live to abc seven news reporter suzanne phan, who is at union square, for a look at what it takes to put this all together. suzanne. so. >> ama. >> we're in union square tonight, and it is doubly energized out here. the bleachers are out. the banners are up. now on my left. i've got lots of people out here with their jerseys on for an nba all star event. and then to my right, we've got lots of crews
