roads. skiers and snowboarders are flocking to tahoe this presidents day weekend following the recent storms, dumping several feet of fresh powder. good morning everybody. it's a busy weekend. welcome to saturday, february 15th. let's get right to your forecast. >> yeah it's really calm down out there. it's cold. we've got freezing temperatures in our north bay interior valleys. also the east bay hills. as we look at, i should say, santa clara hills, the cloud cover to the north. it's going to stay pretty gray throughout much of the day. but here is where the cold air alerts are from the north bay to the south bay here, and you can see temperatures from the upper 30s. fremont, san jose, 36 for you in livermore. look at that. 35 in sonoma and all over the bay area, we are much colder, 10 to 14 degrees colder with some clouds and no precipitation in the forecast. so as we go through the afternoon 11:00, we are in the low to mid 50s. plenty of cloud cover throughout the day today, so by 330 we're in the upper

50s. but a veil of thin clouds will take us through your saturday. we'll talk about brighter and warmer conditions into next week. stephanie. >> all right lisa, thank you. a major weekend in san francisco. the city is hosting nba all star weekend. tonight at chase center is the state farm all star saturday night event. it includes the skills challenge, three-point contest, and slam dunk contest. we're also capping off lunar new year, and what better place to do it than in the city's chinatown? in just a few hours, the district is hosting an all day street fair. vendors are expecting to welcome crowds starting at 9:00 this morning. grant avenue will be shut down between california street and broadway, and you can expect to see traffic in that area. it all leads up to the 2025 chinese new year parade. tickets for bleacher seats are completely sold out. this is billed as the largest parade of its kind outside of asia, and it's expected to draw tens of

thousands of people. finishing touches are being put on the floats, and last night miss chinatown was crowned. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there. as the excitement builds towards tonight's parade. >> number 14. >> miss chinatown usa crowned its newest winner in san francisco. 13 women representing chinatowns from across the country competed for the title inside the westin saint francis on friday night. >> it is the sisterhood. there is nothing else like this pageant. the community within it is something so special. >> ashland city won the crown in 2023. >> electric. there is so much going on in the city and everything is just exciting. leading up to the chinese new year parade. >> the city is buzzing. earlier in the day, we found the colorful and elaborate parade floats that will make their way from market and

second street and end on columbus. if you want to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds, visit chinatown. 500,000 people are expected to visit this weekend. the chinese new year community fair will take place right here on grand avenue on both saturday and sunday. >> she. >> this pageant has celebrated chinese culture for decades. it brings a spotlight back to the community. crystal li won the crown in 2022. >> we really hope that with this special event and leading up to chinese new year, parade really brings in more tourism back to chinatown and make it alive again. >> alex fong, who helped organize the pageant, said. keep an eye out for miss chinatown, who will be on the final float of the parade. >> so the great thing that sticks out to me is that how so many people come together, not just the chinese community, but everyone in san francisco comes together and helps support, you know, everyone together. >> in san francisco. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> and we will have miss chinatown joining us live during our 9:00 hour. we look forward to that

conversation. well, here is the parade route. it covers a little more than a mile. take a look at the map on your screen. it starts at second and market street. it will go down geary loop around union square, then follow post to kearney. the end of the route is at kearney and columbus. san francisco police will be closing streets along that route starting at 3:00 today. abc seven is the official home of the 2025 san francisco chinese new year parade. you can watch the parade live tonight starting at 6:00. it will be live on abc seven or wherever you stream. abc seven news. well, just blocks away from chinatown, the nba has taken over union square. the moscone center and chase center fans are scattered across the city this weekend, taking in eves and keeping an eye out for some of their favorite players and celebrities. kenny smith hosted a party last night at the exploratorium. smith is a former player and current television commentator. also there, charles barkley, who has repeatedly

bashed san francisco and even threatened not to come. but he had a little different tone when our crew caught up with him last night. he says he has been in touch with mayor daniel lurie. >> i really want to thank the mayor. that was really kind of him, and i'm going to spend some time with him because i want to do something to help, you know, san francisco's been great to the nba uh- and i want to do something to help. so but i do i really want to thank the mayor for reaching out to me. and we're going to do something. >> headline rolling loud. >> barkley says so far, he has had a good time exploring the city on his own. well, basketball fans are taking over moscone center for the nba crossover. it allows fans of all ages to shoot hoops, dribble and even dunk like their favorite players. plenty of the courts offer unique quirks like robotic baskets or led walls, as you see there. we caught up with a couple of diehard warriors fans from fairfield who brought their granddaughters to the city for this experience. >> we're all a family full of basketball fans, and we just

love to. >> watch basketball every time it's on and when the season is over, we're bored. football's all right. >> yes it is. football is cool. baseball. >> i love baseball and basketball. >> and we're strong warriors fans. >> the experience runs through tomorrow. day tickets are $25 for kids and $50 for adults. well, the stars were out in oakland for the celebrity game last night. it featured a mix of actors, musicians, online personalities and athletes from other sports. the coaches, a couple of bay area sports legends, you know, barry bonds and jerry rice. abc seven sports reporter sarah hodges was there, and she got wind of some healthy competition between the two of them. >> barry said that he's the bigger bay area legend. what do you got to say about that? >> oh. he did. we're taking down barry bonds. we taking down two chain. it doesn't matter. my team is ready to go. i told you we were going to win. i said at

as well. nba fans can win prizes by visiting select stations using the nba events app. caltrain is also participating in the all-star rewards program, where riders can check in for prizes at three different stations. san francisco bay ferry will provide service to chase center from oakland and alameda for all-star events in the north bay. all lanes of highway 101 in sausalito are back open this morning. thursday's level three stormng. caused a rockslide that blocked several lanes at rodeo drive right before the spencer avenue exit in the southbound direction. caltrans crews worked all day friday to clear that debris. the santa cruz wharf and nearby beaches are expected to reopen today. this comes after high surf warnings forced them to shut down this week. you may recall a 150 foot section of the santa cruz wharf collapsed right before christmas day, and it reopened last month. and the city at this point does not

appear to be rebuilding it. just yesterday, governor newsom declared a state of emergency which will free up resources to help with recovery efforts. the capitola wharf is also expected to reopen this morning. it closed to the public because of the storm and surf. the wharf was battered by storms in 2023, and it took several months to repair. well, if you thought heading to the slopes would free you from the bay area crowds this weekend, think again. this week, snowfall bringing an unexpected yet delightful blanket of snow. and with it, more visitors to ski resorts that are just getting a break from a dry january. >> we've had 31in of snowfall since wednesday night, which is amazing, and there's more on the way, as you can see. so we're really excited. guests are coming up today and they're coming to enjoy our slopes this weekend. >> beautiful sight behind her as palisades tahoe expects bigger crowds too. small avalanches, low visibility and those strong winds kept mountain operations

agents have conducted assessments at the facility this week, and he says a structural assessment of the prison was carried out over the summer and has since been turned over to ice. two months ago, the federal bureau of prisons announced plans to close the compound after years of sexual abuse led to scores of lawsuits. bay area researchers are raising concerns over the president's recent cuts to a global program that's been significant in reducing risk of hiv and aids. president trump says he will unlock treatment funding. but preventative medications are being kept from the lgbtq community worldwide. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains. >> as president trump's push to shutter foreign aid continues, the world's top hiv aids researchers, including right here in the bay area, are sounding the alarm. >> it's only been stopped for two weeks and already people are not getting their medications. >> doctor monica gandhi is the director of the ucsf center for

whale, right? >> oh, boy. gosh, i'm glad they're both safe. yeah. >> yeah. it's like a fairy tale book. all right. good morning, everybody. we are checking out a quiet start to the weekend and finish as well. so a cloud cover is with us this morning. but despite that, that blanket of cloud cover, we have some pretty cold temperatures that are visiting the north bay and the south bay. so there's a look at the clouds. high pressure is going to keep us dry, but there's enough high clouds that will allow for that to block out the sun throughout much of the day. 34 in danville. boy, that's cold, right? 37 in vallejo. it's 36 in sonoma. good morning to you. you can see all thee upper 30s from hayward to fremont and san jose. there's emeryville. so a lot of clouds today. we're going to repeat that again for your sunday. and then looking at sunny and warmer conditions. plenty of 60 arriving next week. so as we get into the sky cover

today, you'll notice that instead of the clouds really thinning out, they stay with us throughout the day and even a visit early tomorrow morning. probably when you're sleeping with a few light sprinkles, mainly confined to the north bay, and then the air mass is pretty dry that they will evaporate before they get any further south. so between the next seven days, we're looking at wednesday as our best bet for a little shower activity. but you notice anywhere from a 10th to maybe a quarter of an inch. and this takes us through the next seven days. so that's as best as we can do. as we look at our extended outlook. upper 50s today in oakland and fremont, with a few lower 60s in san jose. if you are in san francisco today for the all star game, looking at partly cloudy skies into later on today and also into sunday. so temperatures will be in the upper 50s. really a nice evening out there. and of course the chinese new year parade. lots of

away from the 2025 chinese new year parade. you can watch it live right here and anywhere you stream abc seven. the parade is getting the headlines, but this chinese new year. abc seven is highlighting bay area people and businesses helping to preserve, teach and celebrate the culture. and forestville sonoma offers a fresh take on chinese cuisine rooted in tradition, not trends. co-owners sean kwan and jenny phan share flavors from their childhoods inspired by nostalgia and culinary curiosity. >> i think the most important thing for this restaurant is the food having some sort of significance to somebody or multiple people who actually like work here, and having some sort of significance in terms of just like what we're interested in. some of the dishes now are like things that jenny and i might have grown up with, and other dishes are just like the nerdy mindset where, like, went

to this restaurant and i tasted this. wouldn't it be cool if. little bit about bizarre sonoma? it's gone through several iterations, but currently it's kind of a chinese inspired eatery, meant to be a little bit of an in-between between home and work. so nothing fancy, nothing crazy. >> a lot of people come in here, they're like, oh my gosh, your food is so creative. and i'm like, i just want you to know that these are all actually classic chinese dishes. i'm not doing anything like nothing really has a twist on it. this is this is what chinese food is. when you know you're having it from these different regions. and all i'm doing is just bringing it here and showing you what it is, and hopefully making it a little bit more user friendly to you. >> so here we have our steamed fish. we have halibut today, but the fish does change depending on the time and what's good at the moment. we steam it with a little bit of ginger and garlic uh- and then top it with some fresh herbs, usually scallion, chrysanthemum, cilantro and we sear it with hot oil

right before serving. so you can kind of smell all the aromas. this is food that we would have cooked for each other. like there's nothing fancy. there's nothing. there's no bells and whistles, no expensive or premium ingredients. really even it's just what we like to eat. not like, oh, like, this is my our play on this or, you know, a reimagining of this classic dish that was not really asking to be modified. you know. >> so much of the menu is just built from like, what people tell us they want to eat. one of the things that i've come to really love about forestville and sonoma county in general, is people are way more adventurous than you think they would be. they are going for a lot of those dishes that one would consider to be very traditional regional chinese food that you might not even get in many other places in the area. >> what kind of chinese food is it? is it sichuan? is it whatever and is? the real answer is it's not really any of these things. and it's also all of these things. we have two dishes here that are kind of become

staples. this one we have is a we call it zhong dumplings. it's a very classic sichuanese dumpling. we serve it with a house made kind of like a house made sweet soy sauce, our chili crisp and a little bit of fresh garlic, a very simple. there's probably only four things in there, but it's kind of like one of those peanut butter and jelly sort of things where it's just the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. and then over here is a wok fired vegetable dish of a spinach and chrysanthemum. we, we fry that really quickly in a wok with some oyster sauce, garlic and a little bit of soy sauce and sugar. so you kind of taste like that smoky caramelized wok flavor. and we top it with some fresh baby onion shoots. we didn't really expect anything like this to happen. we're just kind of discreetly, quietly opening for a few people who might want to come in. suddenly it's like, i'm sorry, i don't want to run out of wonton noodle soup. i just can't make enough dumplings.

despite the cloud cover getting into the upper 50s to the lower 60s. we're not talking about any rain today. we could see a few raindrops. a few sprinkles visit us early sunday. details on that coming up. stephanie. >> all right, lisa. >> thank you. breaking overnight, three israeli hostages have been released under a ceasefire agreement between israel and hamas. hundreds of israeli prisoners have also been freed under this deal. an american israeli dual nation is amongst the three men released by hamas. according to the palestinian prisoner society. israel is expected to free 369 palestinian prisoners during the course of this ceasefire. back here at home, the san francisco sheriff's office is investigating an incident inside city hall. three men dressed in doge shirts and wearing maga hats walked into several offices claiming to be a part of the department of government efficiency. they demanded digital information related to

alleged wasteful government spending and fraud. employees refused and called sheriff's deputies, but the men had already left. investigators do not believe this was a legitimate doge inquiry. this weekend, two events in the bay area to honor the national day of remembrance of japanese americans incarcerated during world war two. first, organizers in san francisco will host the bay area day of remembrance,he carrying the light for justice. that event starts at 1 p.m. at the kabuki theater in san francisco's japantown on post street. then tomorrow, the san jose, nihonmachi outreach committee is hosting its 45th annual day of remembrance ceremony. that event kicks off at 530. both are meant to commemorate executive order 9066, which led to the incarceration of japanese americans during the conflict. this week, there is a call to remember that history to avoid repeating it. it comes amid concerns about mass deportations of immigrants. here's abc seven
