on paying down the total balance one card at a time. so you can start with the card that charges the highest interest rate to help you wipe out your debt faster or use what they call the snowball method. that's where you pay off the card with the smallest balance first, then take the money you would have used to pay off that card and put it towards paying off the next one. this may take a little bit more time and money but it could motivate you to continue paying off that next credit card. if you can't pay your credit card bill in full each month, try to pay more than just the monthly minimum and here's why. the average credit card balance right now is $6,300. at 20% interest, if you pay just the minimum every month, it will take you over 18 years and cost more than $9,200 in interest to pay off that balance. now, if you have good credit consider moving your high interest card balances to a new card that offers a 0% balance transfer. depending on the terms, some can give you nearly two years to pay off that debt interest-free,
