[ambient noise] seven mornings live. >> right now at nine. there's a lot happening in san francisco this weekend. chinese new year celebrations are taking over chinatown. the festivities leading up to tonight's parade and the nba is in town. all-star weekend. bringing stars from the league and hollywood here to the bay. we catch up with a known celebrity critic of san francisco about his time here so far. then anyone heading to the sierra can expect snow covered roads. skiers and snowboarders

are flocking to tahoe this presidents day weekend following the recent storms, dumping several feet of fresh powder. good morning everybody. it's a busy weekend. welcome to saturday, february 15th. we'll get right to your forecast. partly cloudy out there. >> yeah that's right. we're seeing some high clouds and even mid-level clouds by the end of the day, sort of obscuring the sun not only today but into tomorrow as well. so the rain stays to the north for the most part. there's a look at emeryville this morning, a little hazy in spots. partly sunny. partly cloudy. 45, san francisco 47, in oakland, san jose is at 45, and you can see the clouds floating by from our sutro tower camera, where we still have chilly numbers up in petaluma, low 40s in napa with 47 by the delta, so it is much colder, 5 to 11 degrees colder to start your saturday. and then through the day the numbers will climb through the 50s will be in the mid and upper 50s, perhaps a few 60 degree readings by the end of the day. the parade looks dry tonight with temperatures

dropping through the 50s and then 40s, and we could see a few sprinkles into early sunday in parts of the north bay. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. a major weekend here in san francisco. the city is hosting nba all star weekend. tonight at chase center is the state farm all star saturday night event. it includes the skills challenge, the three point contest, and the slam dunk contest. and we're also capping off lunar new year. and what better place to do it than in san francisco's own chinatown? in just a few hours, the district is hosting an all day street fair. vendors are already welcoming the crowds this morning. grant avenue is shut down between california street and broadway, and you can expect to see traffic in and around this area. it all leads up to the 2025 chinese new year parade. tickets for bleacher seats are completely sold out. this is billed as the largest parade of its kind outside of asia, and it's expected to draw tens of thousands of people.

finishing touches are being put on the floats as we speak, and last night miss chinatown was crowned. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there. as the excitement builds towards tonight's parade. >> number 40. >> miss chinatown usa crowned its newest winner in san francisco. 13 women representing chinatowns from across the country competed for the title inside the westin saint francis on friday night. >> it is the sisterhood. there is nothing else like this pageant. the community within it is something so special. >> ashland suey won the crown in 2023. >> electric. there is so much going on in the city and everything is just exciting. leading up to the chinese new year parade. >> the city is buzzing. earlier in the day, we found the colorful and elaborate parade floats that will make their way from market and

second street and end on columbus. if you want to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds, visit chinatown. 500,000 people are expected to visit this weekend. the chinese new year community fair will take place right here on grand avenue on both saturday and sunday. >> she. >> this pageant has celebrated chinese culture for decades. it brings a spotlight back to the community. crystal li won the crown in 2022. >> we really hope that with this special event and leading up to chinese new year parade, it really brings in more tourism back to chinatown and make it alive again. >> alex fong, who helped organize the pageant, said. keep an eye out for miss chinatown, who will be on the final float of the parade. >> so the great thing that sticks out to me is that how so many people come together, not just the chinese community, but everyone in san francisco comes together and helps support, you know, everyone together. >> in san francisco. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right, here is the parade route. it covers a little more than a mile. take a look at the map on

your screen. it starts at second and market street. it will go down geary loop around union square, then follow post to kearny. the end of the route is at kearny and columbus. san francisco police will be closing streets along the route starting at 3 p.m. abc seven is the official home of the 2025 san francisco chinese new year parade. you can watch it live tonight starting at 6 p.m. it will be live here on abc seven or wherever you stream abc seven news. well, just blocks away from chinatown, the nba has taken over union square, the moscone center and chase center. fans are scattered across the city this weekend, taking in events and keeping an eye out for some of their favore players and celebrities. kenny smith hosted a party last night at the exploratorium. smith is a former player and current television commentator. also there, charles barkley, who has repeatedly bashed san francisco and even threatened not to come. but he had a different tone

when our crew caught up with him last night. he says he has been in touch with mayor daniel lurie. >> i really want to thank the mayor. that was really kind of him, and i'm going to spend some time with him because i want to do something to help, you know, san francisco has been great to the nba uh. and i want to do something to help. so but i do. i really want to thank the mayor for reaching out to me. and we're going to do something. >> barkley says so far, he has had a good time exploring the city on his own. well, basketball fans are taking over moscone center for the nba crossover. it allows fans ol ages to shoot hoops, dribble and even dunk like their favorite players. plenty of the courts offer unique quirks like robotic baskets or even led walls you see here. we caught up with a couple of diehard warriors fans from fairfield who brought their granddaughters to the city for this experience. >> we're all a family full of basketball fans, and we just love. >> watching basketball every time it's on. and when the

season's over, we're bored. football is all right. >> yes it is. football is cool. baseball. >> love baseball and basketball. >> and we're strong warriors fans. >> the experience runs through tomorrow and day. tickets are $25 for kids and $50 for adults. so much fun. while the stars were out in oakland for the celebrity game last night, it featured a mix of actors, musicians, online personalities and athletes from other sports. the coaches, a couple of bay area sports legends, you know, barry bonds and jerry rice. abc seven sports reporter sarah hodges was there, and she got wind of some pretty healthy competition between the two of them. >> oh, barry said that he's the bigger bay area legend. what do you got to say about that? >> oh. he did. we've taken out barry bonds. we've taken out two chainz. it doesn't matter. my team is ready to go. i told you we were going to win. i said at the beginning. he came over and checked me real quick. i didn't

caltrain is also participating in the all-star rewards program, where riders can check in for prizes at three stations. the san francisco bay ferry will provide service to chase center from oakland and alameda for all star events in the north bay. all lanes of highway 101 and sausalito are back open this morning. thursdays level three storm caused arsdays rockslide that blocked several lanes at rodeo drive right before the spencer avenue exit in the southbound direction. caltrans crews worked all day on friday to clear that debris. meanwhile, the santa cruz wharf and nearby beaches are expected to reopen today. this comes after high surf warnings forced them to shut down this week. you may recall, a 150 foot section of the santa cruz wharf collapsed right before christmas day. it reopened last month, and the city at this point doesn't appear to be rebuilding it. just yesterday, governor newsom declared a state of emergency which will free up resources to help with recovery efforts. the

capitola wharf is also expected to reopen this morning. it closed to the public because of the storm and surf. the wharfof was battered by storms in 2023, and it took several months to repair. well, if you thought heading to the slopes would free you from the bay area crowds this weekend, think again. this week, snowfall bringing an unexpected yet delightful blanket of snow. and with it, more visitors to ski resorts that are just getting a break from dry january. >> we've had 31in of snowfall since wednesday night, which is amazing, and there's more on the way, as you can see. so we're really excited. guests are coming up today and they're coming to enjoy our slopes this weekend. as palisades tahoe expects bigger crowds too. small avalanches, low visibility and those strong winds kept mountain operations limited. so be aware traffic could be a headache this morning. if you're heading up to the mountains for this holiday weekend. all right, let's check on conditions outside with lisa. good morning. >> good morning. partly sunny

raising concerns over the president's recent cuts to a global program that's been significant in reducing risk of hiv and aids. president trump says he will unlock treatment funding, but preventative medications are being kept from the lgbt, lgbtq plus community worldwide. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains. >> as president trump's push to shutter foreign aid continues, the world's top hiv aids researchers, including right here in the bay area, are sounding the alarm. >> it's only been stopped fr two weeks and already people are not getting their medications.

>> doctor monica gandhi is the director of the ucsf center for aids research. >> there is a model that every nine minutes a child is dying of hiv. right now in face of these cuts. right now. >> the u.n. aids agency warning more than 6 million people could die from hiv and aids in the next four years if the united states pulls its funding programs. >> not preventing hiv in key populations will lead to a fueling of the epidemic. >> an epidemic she and others played a key role in quelling more than 20 years ago, the u.s. becoming the world leader in the fight against hiv aids. under george w bush, launching pepfar's, the largest commitment made by a nation to combat a single disease. and doctor gandhi says turning on that commitment puts people right here at risk. >> people here would be impacted because anything that there's a lot of transmission occurring because you've stopped virologic suppression, you've stopped people from doing well on meds, means that we'll get cases here.

according to our media partners at the east bay times. a federal prison worker confirms ice agents have conducted assessments at the facility this week. he says a structural assessment of the prison was carried out over the summer and has since been turned over to ice. two months ago, the federal bureau of prisons announced plans to close the compound after years of sexual abuse led to scores of lawsuits. back here at home, the san francisco sheriff's office is investigating an incident inside city hall. three men dressed in doge shirts and wearing maga hats walked into several offices claiming to be a part of the department of government efficiency. they demanded digital information related to alleged wasteful government spending and fraud. employees refused and called sheriff's deputies, but the men had already left. investigators do not believe this was a legitimate doge inquiry. all right. take a look at this. a terrifying moment a humpback whale swallowed up this kayaker off the coast of chile. the 24

year old was quickly spit out by the whale moments after it happened, when a father and son were out on the strait of magellan. the incident ended up being quick. thankfully, his life vest pulled him back to the surface. >> it was surprising. i, i wasn't expecting that at all. so at first i thought that i would die because there's nothing i can do if i'm inside the mouth of a giant fish. >> scary moments. yet despite the scare, though, both the father and son made it back to shore unharmed. marine biologists say there was no threat to the man being swallowed. interestingly, whales throats are actually pretty small, about the size of a fist. so many thoughts about this though. lisa, just to imagine being in that position and then you know, when his mouth is opening, think, okay, he's going to be okay. yeah, i mean, just wild.

>> it is wild. i was saying before it reminded me of dory's father charlie in the movie who gets spit back out. but it makes sense. they eat all that krill. so their their mouths are not that big. and. >> right. >> live to tell about it. amazing. all right. good morning everybody. we have some bright skies out there right now, but high clouds will be on the increase as well as mid-level clouds throughout the day today. we're dry. we'll see temperatures warm up somewhat. but as we look at santa cruz you can see a few high clouds. upper 40s there, 47 san francisco and oakland with 45 in san jose. redwood city is at 43. we're already 50 along the coast here and from our north bay and inland communities. upper 30s petaluma. it is 42, in napa, with 44 in concord. and from pier 39. looks pretty bright there, but we will have those clouds increasing more in the way of mid-level clouds in the north bay throughout the later afternoon. high clouds for everyone else, and then a weak frontal boundary gets close enough tomorrow to wring out

perhaps a few showers north of the golden gate, and possibly more showers on wednesday. so very light systems and not ranked on our storm impact scale. here's a look at the rest of the afternoon. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy. here is that weak system that wants to visit us, probably while you're sleeping tomorrow morning, and from napa to san rafael could see a few light showers, a 10th to 2/10. and then we get into a little more sun in the south bay for sunday. this is monday afternoon, once again holding on to that cloud cover. so rainfall estimates anywhere from just about 1/100 to over a 10th of an inch in novato, perhaps 2/10 in santa rosa. picking this up on tuesday where you can see the storm track is well to the north. but then on wednesday it begins to sag a little bit to the south. so that's where we could see that next shower chance. not only does it ride even stronger and further to the north, by the end of the work week, we're brighter

and we're milder with temperatures coming into the 60s, but rainfall potential adding in the system tomorrow. and then as we get into wednesday, maybe a 10th to 2/10. so really not much out there for the next several days. upper 50s to near 60 today partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. and then as we head over to the all star 2025 game saturday and sunday, partly to mostly cloudy upper 50s both late afternoons and then for the parade today, starting out upper 50. some clouds, some sun, dry conditions. temperatures dropping through the 50s. and you'll need that jacket later on. if you're out later than nine will drop into the 40s. the accuweather seven day forecast. we're dry today. possible north bay showers sunday. more clouds for presidents day. slightly milder tuesday. there's our next chance of region-wide showers. and then we're warmer and sunnier thursday and friday. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. a reminder that you can watch all our newscasts live

way from the 2025 chinese new year parade. you can watch it live right here and everywhere you stream. abc seven news. well, san francisco's parade is the nation's oldest, largest lunar new year celebration. but festivities take place throughout the bay area. you can check out the spectacular show in san jose, which kicked off the year of the snake. >> this is my 45th year of line dancing. >> it takes a lot to put on the show, but we get it done and we show best. >> it's a production like any other show. >> every show is different. you get and you love the audience's

reaction to it. it's just a wonderful time to be a part of it. watching it. >> this past few years thate just have line dancing and regular blessings with the dragon dance, but now they add to the spectacular firework shows and all that. it just makes the front one big finale show the. >> colors, the noise, the excitement, the little kids smiling and just, i don't know. it brings everybody together. >> brings out the kid in all of us. yeah. >> it's the smiles. you can tell by the smiles. >> we're here during a fireworks show at a bay one one casino. they do an annual firework show for the lunar new year. we have line dance show, followed by firecrackers and then a fireworks show to round it all out. >> back in the folklore, back in the 1890s, when they had like a monster in the china villages called ni, which a monster, but we didn't have drumming and firecrackers. also, back in the

villages, they clang all their trash cans and pots and pans, making a loud noise to scare away the evil monster. with chinese they call ni, and they shoot off all the fireworks and firecrackers to scare away the evil spirit. >> in the skies are canvas and fireworks are a pain. >> we're always sourcing new products so we could devastate and exceed everybody's expectations. we just got back from going to china and testing products just to bring in for shows like this. >> some people just love the big boom sounds and just just get a kick out of that and just making a big noise. and some people love the shapes, the colors, the effects that the different fireworks put out. and, you know, there's always new effects coming out every year producing new, new fireworks. and it's always fun to see what what they come out with next. willow is definitely the favorite. you'll see it in this show today. willow has an effect where it kind of explodes in the air,

kind of, and kind of falls down slowly and keeps that sparkle coming down all the way and hangs in the air for a little while. it's great. our guys have previously added electronic matches to each firework so that they can be tied into our firing system, and then we drop each individual firework into an individual tube or gun. the show is very precise in terms of where you want the effects to happen. so there's obviously different locations and, you know, plans it out through a computer program, syncs it up to music. you know, plans, knows exactly where each effect is going to be. and we have to precisely put the pods out in the right positions so that when the fireworks do shoot off, that they happen where he planned it to happen. the software we use to choreograph shows is called finale 3d. it allows. >> us to synchronize fireworks to music. the 3d renders the fireworks so that we can make sure the fireworks pop off at exactly the right beat, or with the desired instrument. it helps us visualize how the show will look, so that we can make sure

abc seven mornings live. >> good morning everybody. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. lisa, we've been talking about that chill. yes. >> it is definitely wearing off. we're in the 40s and we have some sunshine out there helping in that warm up. the view from mount tam isn't this beautiful? you can see all of the

last night here in san francisco. the winner, sydney yi soo, joins us live this morning. sydney, so great to have you with us. >> thank you so much for having me. >> congratulations. you look beautiful. i know you were just telling me about this robe that's been passed down, correct? >> yes, it's been passed down to the many generations of miss chinatown usa. >> wow. it's beautiful. now, what an honor. this pageant has a 70 year legacy. it's a beautiful celebration of culture and tradition, as you know. what were you feeling as you were being crowned? >> oh my gosh, so many emotions. i was crying so much last night. it still feels so surreal. i'm just so grateful for the experience, the opportunity to connect more with my culture and to walk the stage with such intelligent women who are so talented. really, any one of us could have won this last night, and i'm so incredibly proud of everyone. >> of course, miss chinatown is a national competition with women represented across the country, and the bay area was represented well. yes, yes. where you're from? >> i'm from hercules,

california. it's a small town in the east bay. we actually just held our first ever lunar new year parade and festival, which i helped organize with my family and our martial arts business use martial arts. it's the first time we've been trying to organize it for decades. and finally we hit it off this year. so it was just a couple weeks ago. >> wonderful timing. now, the winners of this pageant represent the chinese community and act as ambassadors, of course, of promoting chinese culture and heritage. can you tell us about your family's heritage and how it's shaped who you are today? >> yes. so i actually come from a background of san from my dad's side and toisan from my mom's side, and a lot of our martial arts are kung fu is it comes from our yi family kung fu, which is kind of the southern part of china. so you'll see a lot of farming tools being used as weapons to fight off any intruders. and so a lot of the performance that i gave last night is grounded in those backgrounds of our

history. >> wow. beautiful. now, people born in the year of the snake are said to be intuitive, strategic, intelligent, and also known for being resilient, always following their dreams and doing whatever it takes to achieve their goals. what goals do you want to accomplish as miss chinatown this year? >> oh, such a great question. i just hope to give back more to the community. i currently work for a nonprofit called downtown streets team, and we are working to end homelessness through the dignity of work and the power of community. so we're offering case management and workforce development training, as well as directly employing folks who are unhoused and also other people who have been formerly incarcerated or just have a hard time finding work. so i really want to dig deeper into community service and represent my culture passionately. >> now, speaking of that, you know, giving back to the community, of course, is a significant part of your platform. it was recognized by the judges. what is most

important on your to do list? >> oh, gosh, i think just for me, representing myself well and being the best person that i can be, i think that words and actions matter a lot, and any small ounce of kindness goes a long way. it makes a lasting impact. and so that's why i'm in the work that i'm doing today. i love to empower women. i also volunteer for the miss asian global pageant. i teach martial arts at my family's business every other week, and so really just setting a foundation for the younger generation to come. that's my goal. >> how do you make time for it all? my gosh. >> well, last night i got three hours of sleep. so yeah, i just drive, drive, drive. but it's really important for me to take care of my mental health too. finding that balance and all the things that i do, i really enjoy. so it's nothing that's forced. everything that i set, all the goals i set for myself are just i'm passionate about. >> so wonderful. and what are you most proud of as a chinese-american? >> oh, i think just our strong cultural history and also the

tradition of family gatherings. i think it's really important for us to support each other. and i wouldn't be where i am today without the support of my whole family, my community. i had 27 plus people, including my pageant supporters, last night, and it was amazing to hear them calling my number and my name out in the crowd. it really gives me the motivation and i wouldn't be where i am today without my moms supporting me. >> oh, what a beautiful message. well, sidney, before we wrap up today, i do want to ask this beautiful crown you're wearing. is it heavy? it looks heavy. yeah. >> my head is really small, so i'm surprised that it stays on. it's. i feel like i'm going to tip over, but it's beautiful. thank you so much. >> and the robe you were telling us is passed down. and the sash you're wearing to, of course, will be visible on the float this evening. yes, as we will be on the last one. >> yes. i actually have been in the lunar new year parade

was no foul play in an openai whistleblower's death last november. in an official report released just yesterday, the examiner's office ruled the death a suicide. 26 year old, whose death sparked a flood of conspiracy theories alleging he was assassinated for agreeing to

testify against the company in a lawsuit. his parents believe their son had been murdered, and they sued the city to release his records. openai's board of directors has formally rejected a $97 billion purchase offer by elon musk and other investors. in a statement posted to social media on friday, openai's board chair said the company is not for sale and that the board unanimously rejected that bid. there has been a long running feud between openai and musk, who co-founded the company known for creating chatgpt. musk has criticized the plan for profit as straying from openai's current mission. california's insurance commissioner has denied state farm's latest request for an emergency rate hike. state farm wanted to raise its homeowner policy rates by up to 22%. the company cited its dire financial situation in the wake of the los angeles county wildfires. but the insurance commissioner says the company must first provide clarity on

operation here in the bay area nor any other legitimate toll operator is going to seek to collect payment from customers by sending a text message with a link to a website. >> goodwin says this scam has been ongoing for about a year, and over that time period, it's evolved continuously to try and trick more people. >> this is the second iteration of messages that we've received this calendar year that we've been made aware of. >> on the streets of san francisco. we met donald gable, who told us both he and his wife have been getting the scam text messages for months. >> actually, i just got one this morning. >> gable showed it to us, saying he can see why some people would fall for the scam. >> it's pretty precise and clear. concise. excuse me? and it just says what you need to, why it's being sent and what you need to do to rectify the problem. >> fellow san francisco resident jeremy fortes says he, too, has gotten the messages. while

tomorrow we see more cloudiness with a few sprinkles, perhaps in the north bay, and looking at wednesday as the next day we could see possible showers for some of you. but right now it's about the clouds thickening throughout the morning hours and afternoon hours as we get into the north bay, but we stay dry. we've got the parade tonight, early tomorrow. looks like some rain may fall in the north bay at about 6:00. then it moves off to the east and we're left with mostly cloudy conditions, peeks of sun throughout the day, and a repeat performance as we get into monday afternoon. so we'll stay dry. we do have the opportunity of maybe a couple hundredths up towards richmond. 1/100, maybe san francisco, but 2/10. santa rosa. so this is for your sunday morning. picking this up on tuesday. partly cloudy skies. there's that chance of rain on wednesday that could offer up maybe a 10th
