a big weekend in the bay area gets going with a bang. the always colorful chinese new year parade snaked its way through san francisco streets. the city's largest lunar new year celebration drew people from all over. >> it's one of those san francisco things that you just got to experience. >> but that's not the only event. this saturday over at chase center, the nba all star game festivities are in full swing. it was a packed house for the skills competition, three-point shootout and dunk contest. >> yeah, it's been great. i think it's so fun. we were actually going to go to a museum, but then we just saw athletes walking around the city, and then we had people following them. >> always live. abc seven news

starts right now. >> with that we say good evening everybody i'm dion lim. what a night in san francisco over at chase center. it was the nba all star saturday night where one of the contestants in the dunk contest put on a show. then there was the chinese new year parade. of course, some of you might have watched it right here on abc seven for the first time ever. it's billed as the largest celebration of its kind outside of asia, and it was spectacular. we begin our coverage tonight with abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> from the faces to the floats. dances and drums, the san francisco chinese new year parade taking the streets. >> okay, here we go. >> and a famous face kicking it off at union square. chinese american actor and longtime resident joan chen. this year's parade. marshall taking a moment to talk to our abc seven news team. >> it's a great honor. this is

my city. and this. this. i didn't expect that so many people turned up like it's crowd all the way around. >> this. the largest lunar new year celebration outside asia. people have been packing onto these sidewalks in anticipation of catching this parade. we've met people from right here in san francisco as well as from around the world. >> this is my first time to come here to celebrate this festival with all of the san franciscans. >> for ben wang, it's a reminder of home moving here from china. >> i realize i'm still in the hometown. yeah, because there's so many people celebrate the same things with us. >> i do like photo video. so just to capture as well, like, what's going on? i think it's important time in sf. so to be able to capture that and make it last forever. >> it's so fun to see san francisco with so much people again. it's been a long time. >> i can't remember the last time i was in the city and saw this many people, and it feels

contest. his other dunks were also spectacular. chris alvarez will have more on that coming up live from chase. now we had nba all stars courtside there in shock with what they saw from mcclung. and that included the unofficial bay area ambassador for all star weekend steph curry of the golden state warriors. steph is going to be in the actual all star game tomorrow. his influence on the game, the bay and oakland in particular is profound. >> i think i made a reference to like coming to america to where they had like the live funeral thing and like everybody's celebrating you, but you're still there, like witnessing it. i don't want it to be that at all. but you do want to celebrate it to some extent. he's done so much for this game, man. it's like it's going to be sad. you know, obviously with him and guys like kd and bron and us to remove ourselves from the game, it's going to be it's going to be sad. but you know this is our opportunity for us to celebrate him. you know being in san francisco. >> extreme competitor extremely

>> little later. larry. >> thank you. well, san francisco's glide foundation is getting a sizable donation from nba legend charles barkley. he's pledged $250,000 to the group. barkley has had a mostly lighthearted, ongoing beef with the warriors fans for years. all over his comments about the state of san francisco. he made the donation pledge after spending saturday morning at glide shelter for the unhoused. fans flocked to chase center tonight and as you can imagine, it was packed. some folks hope to walk up and get a ticket, but it was sold out. the all star game is also doubling a chance for san francisco to show off what it has to visitors. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was there, and he found fans from all over. >> all of the fans and they will lead you here. thrive city at chase center. >> i enjoyed the set up. and you know, as a fan, even though you know, it's a good experience. >> thousands showed up for the nba all star event and some for celebrity sightseeing.

monitors potential threats to citywide activities and events. one of the protective measures in place are texts from alert sf. those will be used to inform subscribers of significant nba all-star related impacts to city services. things like transit disruptions and emergency information. >> just making sure that we keep people safe, whether they're going to the lunar new year parade, whether they're heading to chase and thrive city, or just down on powell street, which is packed right now, it is hopping around the city. people are out having a great time. >> the agency is urging the public to be aware of your surroundings, and if you see anything suspicious, immediately let the police or event staff know. moving to the south bay. an update for you on a stabbing we first brought you last night. it is now turned into a homicide investigation. that stabbing happened just after seven last night on santana row, san jose. police say the victim died in the hospital. police haven't released any information about

possible suspects. meantime, firefighters are investigating what caused a house fire in san mateo county. it all started at about six this morning on canyon road in the burlingame hills. everyone inside was able to safely make it out. no one was hurt. that's the good news. firefighters say there were many boxes inside that home, and they are now warning about keeping too much cardboard in your home to help prevent flames from spreading easily. still ahead tonight on abc seven news at 11, a busy day in san francisco. because before all of the events, there was a protest. the issue that drew out hundreds of people. and a little later, a daring rescue in the sierra this week. we'll take you along as crews pull a teenager out of a mine shaft. >> and it's not quite an atmospheric river, but there is some rain on the way. and i'll have all the details in my accuweather forecast coming up on abc s

benjamin netanyahu is figuring out israel's next move after a sixth hostage exchange today. three israeli hostages, including a 36 year old american-israeli man, were released from gaza. more than 360 palestinian prisoners were freed in return. there are just over two weeks left in the initial phase of this ceasefire. the bay area jewish federation released a statement today saying they're relieved to see the agreement holding. but they add, quote, we will not forget the remaining 70 hostages who have languished in gaza for 498 days and are awaiting their release. the federation will continue its advocacy for these hostages until every last one of them is home. meantime, gaza is

not for sale. that's the message to president trump from pro-palestinian demonstrators in san francisco. the protest was held outside the powell street bart station this afternoon. demonstrators accused the white house of sabotaging the cease fire in place in gaza by calling for millions of palestinians to be moved out of the area. >> i would like to see a cessation of fire and the ability of palestinians to have dignity, and for them to have uh. the what i'm looking for is sovereignty on their land. >> trump said last week he wants the u.s. to take over the gaza strip, send the palestinians elsewhere and redevelop the land. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said it was, quote, worth listening carefully to the idea. closer to home, part of the pacific coast highway remained closed saturday from malibu to the pacific palisades, all due to a mudslide cleanup. a powerful storm on thursday dropped about two

inches of rain. that's according to the national weather service. the first slide was recorded at about 130 thursday afternoon, and crews have spent the past couple of days cleaning up. the santa cruz wharf has reopened after large waves pounded the central coast on friday. check it out. large swells, really large swells were predicted to be more than 30ft in some areas. the harbormaster explained thes. decision to close the jetty to visitors yesterday. >> one thing we like to do during swells like this is close off the jetties. so we did close off the west jetty and this morning there were waves breaking over it. now that the tide is dropping, we're not seeing that as much. >> lifeguards and first responders patrolled the beaches on friday, positioning jetskis just in case of a water rescue. officials said the high surf warning did little in terms of coastal flooding or damage. nothing like what they saw in december that led to the wharf partially collapsing. that storm shut the wharf down for nearly

two weeks. wow. all right, getting to our weather situation, i have to give you kudos because i don't know what happened. i was wearing three sweaters under my jacket for the chinese new year parade. yeah, probably only could get away with one sweater. it was so nice. >> mild out there, wasn't it? yeah, i was ready. i was bundled up, i had layers with me, and all of a sudden i started peeling off the layers because it was nice out there. and what a great parade as well. >> a different kind of show if you did that. >> oh yeah, you're right about that. here's a look at what's going on with our weather right now. the satellite radar composite image showing not an atmospheric river, but just a long stream of moisture moving in our direction. so we're going to have a little bit of rain tomorrow morning, probably mainly in the north bay. wind is calm right now, and the weather all overall is pretty calm as well. it's a bit milder right now. speaking of mild weather than at this time last night. by anywhere from two to about 4 or 5 degrees. it's 50 in san francisco right now. 47 a piece in oakland and hayward, 49 san jose and mid 40s at redwood city and half moon bay. let's check out some other readings right now up north.

santa rosa 44. 41 petaluma. mid to upper 40 at napa, fairfield. concord and livermore. and as we look across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are our forecast headlines tomorrow. we'll have some morning showers, mainly the north bay, but a few of those showers will trickle down to other areas of the bay area. other regions, i should say monday and tuesday. partly cloudy and dry. and then on wednesday, showers are possible again. but after that we have some mild weather coming our way late next week. here's the forecast animation for the overnight hours. we'll see a few clouds around then. that little weak frontal system swings through the north bay early tomorrow morning, about 5 or 6 a.m. it breaks up quickly by about 8 a.m. into widely scattered showers, and a few of those showers may move south and east of the golden gate, but most of the remainder of the bay area, apart from the north bay, will not see much from this system. it will be all over by midday. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the low to mid 40s, and tomorrow's highs in the afternoon. 57 half moon bay and san francisco 59. oakland some low 60s right around fremont, palo alto, san mateo down in the south bay,

versions of those very same fake texts are popping up. abc seven news reporter tim johns has the new warning. >> a warning to local drivers about an ongoing scam involving fastrak. all around the bay area. people have been getting texts just like this one, warning them they owe money for an overdue toll. some of the messages even saying drivers could face penalties like a suspension of their vehicle registration or legal proceedings if they don't pay up. john goodwin is a spokesperson for the metropolitan transportation commission, the organization that runs fastrak. >> neither we with the fastrak operation here in the bay area nor any other legitimate toll operator is going to seek to collect payment from customers by sending a text message with a link to a website. >> goodwin says this scam has been ongoing for about a year, and over that time period, it's evolved continuously to try and trick more people.

>> this is the second iteration of messages that we've received this calendar year, or that we've been made aware of. >> on the streets of san francisco. we met donald gable, who told us both he and his wife have been getting the scam text messages for months. >> actually, i just got one this morning. >> gable showed it to us, saying he can see why some people would fall for the scam. >> it's pretty precise and clear. concise. excuse me? and it just says what you need to, why it's being sent and what you need to do to rectify the problem. >> fellow san francisco resident jeremy fortes says he, too, has gotten the messages. while fortes knows not to fall for them, he says he worries that older friends or family members might get confused. >> when i see them, i always know, like, wow, i bet you this is working for a lot of people. >> fastrak officials say they're actively working to try and get the scam shut down. >> we have employed a domain shutdown service to try to stamp these out. but, you know, it's a

bit of a it's a bit of a whack a mole game. >> goodwin says if you fallen victim, he recommends calling your bank immediately to try and stop the transaction from going through. in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> a teenager is recovering after falling inside a mineshaft in placer county. cal fire released video of firefighters rescuing the 16 year old boy. wow. take a look. they say on monday, he and his friends attempted to repel down a vertical section of the shaft using ropes. the rope snapped, causing the teen to fall about 30ft. firefighters had to use a complex rope system and air monitoring to reach and secure him. he was then taken to a local trauma center for treatment. still to come tonight on abc seven news at 11, part of the chinese new year celebration is the crowning of the new miss chinatown. we'll introduce you to her. >> i'm spencer christian. there are some morning showers headed our way, but the sun will also

this is the third time the bay area has hosted the nba's midseason showcase. the last time they were here. 2000 over in oakland, an nba basketball return today to oracle arena for the first time since the 2019 nba finals. game six. of course, the raptors defeated the warriors that season. so much history in the town 47 seasons worth of warriors basketball.

that final stretch saw a dubs dynasty. i had a chance to talk with oakland native damian lillard following the three point contest, and asked him what it meant to play at oracle arena. >> i came here as a kid, as a fan a lot. i came to a lot of concerts here. i came to a lot of and1 mixtape tour stuff here. i felt like i was in that, that building a lot, being from a neighborhood close by you, just every time you get on the freeway going to school, you drive past it. you know, i just got to you get on bart. you know, you see it. so just so much experience and so much history being there. so to be back there today and, you know, have practice there. and just to feel that energy again was cool. and also, you know, the first you know, seven years of my career being able to play there, it was all, you know, it was it was all special for me. >> you know, as much as like being in this arena gives me like, nightmares because i had to go against them. like it was like a real battle. like we literally created teams just to come. just to just to beat the
