ou. catching the sun reflecting off mt rundle, while traversing landscapes that redefine your sense of scale. or emerging from a tunnel into daylight, like a curtain rising on a stage for the show nature is putting on just for you. rocky mountaineer. now abc seven mornings live. >> now at six. a jam packed weekend here in the bay area. the chinese new year parade on abc seven snaked its way through san francisco. we have all the sights and sounds you won't want to miss. plus, it was an all star saturday night over at chase center. the nba showcasing some of the best skills, three point shots and a memorable slam dunk contest. then, as you wake up this morning, a chance of showers over parts of the north bay. lisa has what you need to know as you plan your sunday.

good morning everybody. it's sunday, february 16th. lisa, the city really felt alive last night with the chinese new year parade. nba all star games. i mean, it was so packed last night. >> yeah. really a fun weekend. and we're looking at the weather that's not really getting in the way. we are looking at a few showers perhaps this morning, but most of you probably won't see them or will sleep through it. live doppler seven shows the activity up in the north bay. you can see the green and a few yellows there. the atmosphere is dry. so it's taking a lot for this to reach the ground. fort ross to bodega bay, up towards santa rosa, and maybe a few light rain showers from san rafael. highway one and up towards i-80, fairfield and american canyon. just some returns. doesn't mean that it's raining though. 43 in fremont. it's 48 in san francisco. so a lot of levels of dry air in the atmosphere that this has to get through. 46 novato there's been a few one hundredths up at north field. so as we go through the next few hours from six seven and 8:00, a few sprinkles in the

40s into the upper 50s with cloudy skies today. another opportunity for showers before we talk. springlike coming up. stephanie. >> all right, lisa. thank you. well, what a night in san francisco. last night over at chase center, it was nba all star saturday night where one of the contestants in the dunk contest put on a show. and there was the chinese new year parade. of course, some of you might have watched it right here on abc seven for the first time ever. it's billed as the largest celebration of its kind outside of asia, and it truly was spectacular. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> from the faces to the floats, dances and drums, the san francisco chinese new year parade taking the streets. >> okay, here we go. >> and a famous face kicking it off at union square. chinese american actor and longtime resident joan chen. this year's parade. marshall taking a moment

to talk to our abc seven news team. >> it's a great honor. this is my city. and this. i didn't expect that so many people turned up like it's crowd all the way around. >> this. the largest lunar new year celebration outside asia. people have been packing onto these sidewalks in anticipation of catching this parade. we've met people from right here in san francisco as well as from around the world. >> this is my first time to come here to celebrate this festival with all of the san franciscans. >> for ben wang, it's a reminder of home moving here from china. >> i realize i'm still in the hometown. yeah, because there are so many people celebrate the same things with us. >> i do like photo video. so just to capture as well, like what's going on? i think it's an important time in sf. so uh- to be able to capture that and make it last forever. it's so fun to see san francisco with so much people again. it's been a long time. >> i can't remember the last

time i was in the city and saw this many people, and it feels like the city is coming back, and there's great energy here today and it feels really good. >> this parade is amazing. there's tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people. >> and san francisco mayor daniel lurie agrees. >> look at san francisco. we are showing off to the world. we got over 3 million people watching this parade. uh. we have one of the largest, oldest chinatowns in north america right here in san francisco. you got to come out and see our great city. >> this is so exciting. happy new year. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> now, before the parade, people paid a visit to the community street fair. it takes over several blocks of chinatown. if you missed out yesterday, it will be back again today. in our next half hour, we'll give you a closer look at the fair and its economic impact today. several streets will remain closed through 11 p.m. because of chinese new year events. they include grant avenue between california street and broadway. pacific between columbus and stockton street,

and jackson between stockton and kearny, as well as washington between stockton and kearny. now we have a lot more coverage of chinese new year parade and the festivities over on our website, abc seven news.com. you'll find links and stories right there on the front page. san francisco's glide foundation is getting a sizable donation from nba legend charles barkley. he's pledged $250,000 to the organization. barkley has had a mostly lighthearted beef with warriors fans for years over his comments about the state of san francisco. he made the donation pledge after spending saturday morning at glide shelter for the unhoused. meanwhile, fans flocked to chase center last night and it was packed. some people hope to walk up and get a ticket, but it was completely sold out. the all star game is also doubling a chance for san francisco to show what it has to offer to visitors. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was there, and he found fans from

all over. >> follow the fans and they will lead you here. thrive city at chase center. >> i enjoyed the set up. and you know, as a fan, even though you know, it's a good experience. >> thousands showed up for the nba all star event and some for celebrity sightseeing. >> we're actually going to go to a museum, but then we just saw athletes walking around the city, and then we had people following them, and then we actually got to go to the crossover event. so that was super dope to be a part of. >> i got a chance to see. >> shaq o'neal. how was that? wow. it was it was it's so surreal when you meet someone in person. >> of course, not everybody made it inside for the sell out events, but there were other events to keep everybody busy. >> we were doing three on three and our team won, so we got to keep the shoes. >> and the fans. they poured in from across the country. sanchez mcnatt is from south carolina. this is his first time visiting the bay area. he went to the oakland coliseum for events on friday. here today for the dunk

contest. but the big takeaway? the city of san francisco. how is san francisco been as a host? >> oh, man, it's been lovely. food is delicious, man. i'm literally stuffed now. like. no lie. oh, impressed. oh, i love it. i'm coming back. i'm coming back. >> even some locals are feeling the buzz. >> it's awesome. it's so awesome. and i think it's done a lot for the city. it's just feels like it's revitalizing and bringing the energy back to san francisco. it's been missing for a long time. >> i would say san francisco, step up the notch when it comes to like, security, especially with what happened in the previous events. everything is, you know, tight and locked in. >> the all-star weekend comes to an end with the all star game on sunday and san francisco anser hassan. abc seven news. >> well, multiple streets are closed through midnight tonight because of the all-star events. and they are 16th street between third and terry francois boulevard. warriors way between third and bridge view way, as

well as southbound terry francois boulevard between 16th street and mission bay. now, with so much going on, san francisco's emergency operations center has increased its activation status for the weekend. the eoc monitors potential threats to citywide activities and events. one of the protective measures in place are texts from alert sf that will be used to inform subscribers of significant nba all-star related impacts to city services, such as transit disruptions and emergency information. >> just making sure that we keep people safe, whether they're going to the lunar new year parade, whether they're heading to chase and thrive city, or just down on powell street, which is packed right now, it is hopping around the city. people are out having a great time. >> the agency is urging the public to be aware of your surroundings, and if you see anything suspicious, immediately report it to police. well, new this morning, san francisco fire crews have been searching all

night for a man who went missing in the bay. a man and a woman fell into the water between embarcadero and bryant street late last night. the woman was rescued and taken to a hospital, but the man is still missing. crews have been searching between piers, 30 and 32, where the victims originally fell. they have since extended their search overnight. officials don't know how the man and woman fell into the water, but it was where last night's drone show launched in the south bay. now, an update on a stabbing we first told you about on friday. it's now turned into a homicide investigation. the stabbing happened just after seven friday night on santana row, san jose. police say the victim died in the hospital. police have not released any information about possible suspects. firefighters are investigating what caused a house fire in san mateo county. it started early saturday morning on canyon road in the burlingame hills. everyone inside was able to safely make it out and thankfully, no one was injured. fire crews say

ma exploratorium camera. you see the blue and gold lit up on the city skyline. it's 612. following developing news, 18 people have died in a stampede at a new delhi train station in india. according to indian media, the crowd was on the way to the world's largest religious gathering. officials say the crowd rush occurred at a new delhi railway station just around 10:00 last night. nine women and five children were among the 18 victims. authorities say the stampede started when delays to two train services and then a rush of passengers that led to significant overcrowding. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is figuring out israel's next move after yesterday's six hostage

exchange. three israeli hostages, including a 36 year old american-israeli man, were released from gaza. more than 360 palestinian prisoners were freed in return. there are just over two weeks left in the initial phase of the ceasefire. the bay area jewish federation released a statement saying the relief to see the agreement holding. but they add, quote, we will not forget the remaining 70 hostages who have languished in gaza for 498 days and are awaiting their release. the federation will continue its advocacy for these hostages until every last one of them is home. meanwhile, gaza is not for sale. that's the message you see here to president trump from pro-palestinian demonstrators in san francisco. the protest was held outside the powell street bart station yesterday afternoon. demonstrators accused the white house of sabotaging the ceasefire in place in gaza by calling for millions of palestinians to be moved out of the area. >> i would like to see a

cessation of fire and the ability of palestinians to have uh- dignity, and for them to have a. what i'm looking for is sovereignty on their land. >> trump said last week he wants the u.s. to take over the gaza strip and send the palestinians elsewhere while redeveloping the land. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said it was, quote, worth listening carefully to that idea. back here at home, napa's wine industry could be impacted by the layoffs of federal workers. north bay congressman mike thompson says elon musk has ordered the department of agriculture to fire uc davis researchers who are studying how smoke impacts grape crops. he said, quote, in firing the only two smoke exposure researchers in our region. elon musk and his republican enablers are not only throwing out a decade of research progress, they are making it harder for our agriculture producers to recover

after wildfires strike down south, part of the pacific coast highway remained closed yesterday from malibu to the pacific palisades due to all the mudslide cleanup. a powerful storm on thursday dropped about two inches of rain. that's according to the national weather service. the first slide was recorded at around 130 thursday afternoon, and crews have spent the past couple of days cleaning up. meanwhile, the santa cruz wharf has reopened after waves pounded the central coast on friday. large swells were predicted to be more than 30ft high in some areas. the harbormaster explained the decision to close the jetty to visitors. >> one thing we like to do during swells like this is close off the jetties. so we did close off the west jetty and this morning there were waves breaking over it. now that the tide is dropping, we're not seeing that as much. >> lifeguards and first responders patrolled the beaches friday, positioning jetskis in case of a water rescue. officials said the high surf

warning did little in terms of coastal flooding or damage. nothing like what they saw in december that led to the wharf partially collapsing. that storm shut the wharf down for nearly two weeks. now planning ahead for our work week. there is some moisture coming to the north bay and other parts of the bay area today. >> yeah, we have a lot of cloud cover. we have a weak weather system that definitely has a little rain with it up towards santa rosa, but it's not amounting to much, and we're going to be left with not only a good deal of cloud cover today, but to get the work week started. there's another system that will have clouds in front of it, and with it when it moves on through throughout the middle of the week. but temperatures each and every day coming up a bit. overnight lows not as cold. live doppler seven looks kind of active right as we go in for a closer inspection, you'll notice from cloverdale highway one up towards i-80 in sacramento and even down towards vallejo and parts of the east bay. looking at perhaps a few sprinkles,

here's a look at bodega bay and you can see the moisture offshore. there's santa rosa reports of rain up in santa rosa and then further to the north. well, to the north there some rain. north of yountville. we take you down towards crockett and martinez, east of 80. and this is a fast moving little line of shower activity will be a little bit more throughout the morning hours. you can see san francisco here that's not reaching the ground, but another opportunity in the next couple of hours, probably through about eight 9:00. it's 45 in oakland right now with 43 in palo alto. so temperatures with all the cloud cover overnight much milder. 47 downtown in san francisco. and the pavement is dry there. morning showers, perhaps the chance. and then as we go through monday and tuesday week, high pressure keeps us dry. still some cloud cover. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy. and then our next chance of rain comes in on wednesday, so it doesn't look promising that everyone is going to get

wet at all from today or into wednesday. but after that, we're talking zero chances of rain because we have stronger high pressure. here's a look at 7:00 and that another line of showers pushing through. but overall through about eight 9:00 you notice that that kind of fizzles out. and we're left with a good deal of cloud cover, maybe a few peeks of sun. overall, though, just a couple hundredths out there for hayward maybe. kind of doubt that. 3/100 in oakland activity up towards santa rosa, yountville and novato. so picking this up on tuesday. notice who gets all the rain. it's in the pacific northwest from washington and seattle through oregon. and then as this high pressure ridge continues to keep us dry monday and tuesday, it sags south into wednesday. so that's our next chance of rain. and then by the weekend, we're going to be well above average highs today from the upper 50s to low 60. so even a little bit mild out there near average this afternoon. and the accuweather

few hours away and we are live from the daytona international speedway. all of that is coming up right here on gma. >> health officials in california are warning of an increase in flu cases and hospitalizations. the california department of public health says more than 26% of flu tests were positive last week, which is considered very high. they also report 11 children in the state have died from the flu. vaccination rates remain lower in california compared to years past, which is why the state is urging all californians who are six months and older to get vaccinated. well, we're tracking a school budget crisis across the bay area's biggest cities. school leaders in both san jose and san francisco are facing multimillion dollar budget deficits with few easy solutions. first, san francisco unified has vowed school closures are off the table. at this week's board meeting, superintendent maria su laid out her plan to cut almost $114 million from the budget. the

budget issue stems from declining enrollment and loss of funding. district officials say it's focused on keeping the impact on students as minimal as possible. >> about 80% of sf usd's $1.3 billion budget is staff, and so unfortunately, there will need to be some positions that are reduced for next year. >> teachers have protested the planned cuts. some educators say the district needs to prioritize the classroom and move away from focusing on administrative tasks and costs. sfusd officials say layoffs will all be in accordance with the law and contracts they have with teachers unions. in the south bay, a decision on school closures has been postponed by at least two weeks. the franklin-mckinley school district in san jose is looking at a list of six schools. the district appears to have settled on three to close, but they are looking for a total of five, and it was clear there was not a

consensus at the district's last meeting. the debate at times was pretty heated. >> if we don't do anything right now, by january we will be bankrupt. we will not be able to pay our teachers by next january if we do nothing. >> the two weeks will give the board more time to reach a final decision. each closure could save the district around $1 million. across the nation, amazon workers in north carolina won't be unionizing anytime soon. the warehouse workers overwhelmingly voted against the effort to form a union yesterday. in fact, more than 2400 workers voted against it. nearly 830 workers voted in favor of a union, which was only 25% of the vote, according to the national labor relations board. at least 30% of workers need to sign cards or petitions saying they want to unionize to be granted an election. all right. are you ready for a vacation? as abc news reporter reena roy tells us, you don't have to wait until your travel

dates to feel the effects. >> feeling those winter blues. although retail therapy can give us a quick rush, there might be a better way to spend your money to lift your spirits. professor of psychology and host of the happiness lab podcast, doctor laurie santos, says studies have shown that buying an experience can bring you more happiness than buying material goods. >> so we've known for a long time that experiences like travel can make us happier. but a recent survey by united airlines found that 70% of americans report feeling happier once they book some travel. >> doctor santos says there's science to back this up. >> one of the reasons travel feels so rewarding is it helps our brains overcome what researchers call hedonic adaptation. that's just the fact that we get used to stuff. most people's vacations aren't long enough for you to get used to them. so unlike some material purchase like a new tech gadget or some clothes, you don't really get used to the benefits of travel over time. and that means that travel can have a kind of more lasting effect on our happiness. >> and we can get the happiness bump from travel even before we

abc seven mornings live. >> good morning everybody. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather where we're expecting some rain this sunday morning. >> yeah, we have rain up in the north bay, up towards santa rosa, sebastopol. and it is moving into the east bay, sinking south, but it is going to not amount to too much out there. but nonetheless, you're probably hearing the raindrops from cloverdale to santa rosa, and you can see some of those yellows there where that's where it's reaching the ground. so bodega bay has seen some rain through 101 out towards yountville and highway 12,

taking you into just east of 680 around highway four. rain shower activity and then even in emeryville, macarthur boulevard. and this is where that line extends back southwestward. so if you morning showers, clouds with 40s and upper 40s in some locations. and here's the way it's going to play out the next couple of hours through 7:00, maybe by the delta san francisco, 8:00, we could see a few east bay showers. and then throughout the rest of the later morning hours and afternoon, it's primarily clouds, upper 50s, a dry afternoon, and it looks like we will get in a few peeks of sunshine here and there to start the workweek. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. from giant pandas to celebrity guests, the chinese new year parade had it all. here's some of the highlights. joan chen had the honor of

lighting the traditional firecrackers to commemorate chinese new year. the actor and producer shared her hope for the new year. >> i think it's a new beginning for our city, with our new mayor, with our new civic leaders, and i feel the year of snake is going to be a great year. >> i think of all the glitter that they used to create this. >> a number of schools came together. >> dragon dances, martial arts demonstrations, and more celebrations of chinese culture. that was truly everything. the parade capped off about two weeks of celebrations to ring in the year of the snake. well, it's a huge weekend, not just with the chinese new year parade, but the nba all star games with the big crowds should come a big financial boost for san francisco. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn shows us what all the buzz is about. >> fun, festive and outpouring

a team of young researchers believes there's an easier way to do that, and they're hoping it will help us better understand the behavior of sharks and other marine creatures. abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma has the details. >> if you're lucky enough to score a diving trip to costa rica, who wouldn't snap a few pictures or take a few videos? but a team of student researchers from stanford robotics believe their images offer a powerful technique for expanding shark conservation. >> we took our drones to santa elena bay, a marine protected area in costa rica, to study and tag endangered pacific sharks. >> the team tracked their fieldwork during an expedition and assembled it into a video. they're hoping to document the power of drone photography, coupled with artificial intelligence. we assembled the shark chasers back at stanford to take us behind the scenes. field team member dakota reemtsma says the computer science is as important as the drone hardware. >> one of the strengths of the model and incorporating machine

learning and ai is that it is generalizable, and that it's also kind of infinitely specialized. >> all the targets varied, from the habitats around santa elena bay to the marine life like sharks that inhabit it. to test their drone powered platform, the team first hit the water to survey the area up close. then they compared that data to images they collected with the drone footage and a sort of 3d viewing model. mark leone says they're advancing recognition. technology could give the aerial technique even more capabilities. >> to actually automatically detect and track the sharks in the imagery. >> a sort of facial to fin recognition, including size, motion and potential behavior. chinmay lalgudi says the platform could work with multiple drone models or other types of photo survey technologies, with the potential to fast track field research and

moving across parts of the bay area. live doppler seven showing you the green and even some yellows here on the screen. so we've had a little bit of rain from santa rosa, cotati, sebastopol, even as far south as marin county and getting into the east bay. this area is solid rain from tomales bay. highway one marshall out towards the farmland there. but as we get into the more populated areas, just scattering areas of light rain or drizzle from napa up towards highway four, davis north of i-80, and then as we get further south, it's a sprinkle or two. san francisco, oakland, uh- moisture offshore. we're going to keep the chance of a shower around. but notice as you look outside, beautiful views. sun coming up just before seven. it is 47. san francisco 45. in oakland with 43. in san jose. much milder with the cloud cover, although that 39.5 moon bay is cold. we've got low clouds, high clouds out there. 46 santa rosa with the shower activity out by the delta 45 and low 40s in livermore, the golden

title. steph and everybody else thought buddy had it in the bag. no heroes. the winner. all right. move on. draymond green moses moody repping the dubs in the skills competition. spurs. they tried to game this thing. victor wembanyama and chris paul. they weren't even trying to make shots. they were just throwing the ball all over the place. they got some really bad advice. they got booed and they also got disqualified. i don't know who told them what the rules are, but they need somebody else. cavs in the finals finished in exactly one minute. so that was the time to beat moses moody of the warriors. oh he did his part. he was on fire. he finished in just under 30s. so it all came down to draymond green okay. draymond struggled in one area. as you can see. it uh- it didn't get any better. so the cavs win the skills challenge. the warriors were laughing about it
