latest and greatest pair. he's hoping to get what these guys just got. >> highly hype. everyone wants them. >> like everyone here in line at the nike store. harris has spent a lot of money during the big basketball event. >> i've given san francisco almost $2,000. i am, i'm in the hole right now, but when i get home, i'll make sure i make it right. >> how did you spend it? >> oh, everything. shoes, food. good experiences. uber. oh, i'm about 200 plus in uber right now, but yep. >> san francisco hopes hundreds of thousands of people, just like harris, will be at the nba all-star events. >> the nba has really done this thing. and bringing the joy back to the city. >> every single year. just turning on the dunk contest, a three point contest, the skills challenge. and the game on sunday is always a treat just to watch. >> i watched the dunk contest. mac mcclung was insane. this is a once in a lifetime thing. last time all-star was here was 25 years ago. >> from local restaurants to

hotels, union square to pop up shops, visitors are pumping big bucks into the region's economy, which hopes to bring in about $350 million. the nba all-star weekend has attracted fans young and old, like eight year old ryan pryor. >> every single nba team wanted, and some of them are patches like the knicks, the bulls, the lakers and then the warriors, celtics and 70 sixers. >> many fans are catching sunday night's big game at a watch party. others are seeing it in person at chase center. some ticketed experiences start at a whopping 500 bucks. diego martinez is visiting from saratoga. he's sporting his merch and checking out all the action at chase center, ending with sunday night's big game. >> it was a gift for christmas. >> martinez has his eye on one player in particular. >> type of curry. never, can never go wrong with him. >> and you can imagine the traffic around here is crazy. the muni is packed. busses are packed. we see people coming by.

uber by lyft. they're walking. and we should tell you this nba all-star weekend. this this nba definitely sets the stage for more big events to come next year, including the super bowl and world cup. we're live in san francisco tonight. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> it's the beginning of an exciting time, suzanne. thank you. a program that helps the city's unhoused is getting a big financial boost from an nba legend. we first told you about it yesterday. charles barkley, who has been critical of the city, is donating $250,000 to support the glide foundation's work. glide ceo talked about the donation today. >> he was really passionate on the work that we were doing. as people come into the meals line, the people walk into glide. we're talking to them about, how are you? how do you need food? are you looking for a job? all the sort of navigation services that we do. this money is going to continue to support that sort of operation that we do every day in the community at glide. >> the announcement came after

barkley spent a day volunteering at glide, which actually surprised the organization. they found out with the rest of the world when he announced it on tnt's inside the nba show. well, the 74th annual nba all-star game is happening right now in san francisco. and while a huge star is not suiting up tonight, the place is still buzzing about last night's dunk contest. abc seven's larry beil and chris alvarez are at chase center with details. >> the major headline here on all star sunday is lebron james not playing in the all star game tonight? he had started in 20 consecutive all-star games. but he's got foot and ankle issues. >> yeah that's unbelievable. two decades worth of starts for lebron i was back in college when he started this thing. i couldn't even buy an adult beverage. larry. >> well, you can now. yeah. sure can. and so can mac mcclung, who basically saved all star saturday. mcclung comes out in a kia to save the day. >> yeah, he jumps over a car, guy in the sunroof, takes the

ball out and throws it down. i don't know where he gets his creativity, but mac mcclung, let's hear from him in all star savior. >> was thinking, please go in ball, please. and then on the car i'm like, please don't land on the car. but no, i think just trusting the preparation, you know, kind of getting into like a flow state where you're not really thinking about anything. it kind of feels like a blur, you know what i mean? and it's just something i love doing. i think that's where my creativity comes, is because i genuinely love this contest and i love to dunk. so i'm not really comparing myself to anybody or, you know, trying to put value on my, my name. so we'll just let the, the world and the people that love dunking judge that. >> obviously, the nba really wants and needs its stars to participate in these contests. and we have a little bit of an inkling. giannis antetokounmpo said he might get the windmill ready. then john moran tweeted hey, if you do it, i'll do it. >> yeah. star power is what the all star game is all about. michael jordan used to win dunk contest. vince carter did it here in oakland back in 2009. next year, the intuit dome in la is going to host the

all-star game. shining bright in hollywood. larry. >> all the stars in hollywood. and how about we throw out, i don't know, $1 million cash prize for the slam dunk contest winner? we're handing out money. we're like. we're like the commissioner here. dion, back to you. >> thanks, guys. well moving on. the search has been suspended for a man who went missing after reports of two people falling into the water off san francisco's embarcadero. crews rescued a woman yesterday night near pier 32. they used thermal imaging cameras, drones, powerful floodlights and boats for the search. police say the search for the missing man resumed today and included crews from the fire department, the california highway patrol and coast guard. that search was called off at around noon. several officers were attacked when responding to a large fight in downtown san jose last night. that fight broke out just before 12:30 a.m. in the area of santa clara street and san pedro. police say they were attacked by multiple suspects when they

tried to make an arrest. one officer once. officers, i should say, called for backup. they were able to take all suspects into custody. the san jose police department says the officers suffered minor injuries. the lithium ion battery of an electric scooter exploded this morning, sending one person to the hospital. that's according to the south san francisco fire department. it all happened in a residential motel used by the county as transitional housing. the scooter was being charged in one of the rooms when that battery exploded, starting the fire that then set off the sprinkler system. the water damage displaced 38 people who are now in need of housing. two developing news out of the middle east. now, u.s. secretary of state marco rubio today says he fully endorses israel's objective in the gaza strip, saying hamas must be eradicated. abc news reporter marcus moore has details now from tel aviv.

>> secretary of state marco rubio arriving in israel this weekend on sunday visiting yad vashem with israeli president isaac herzog, honoring the 6 million victims of the holocaust, signing a book ofof remembrance and laying a wreath. secretary rubio also met with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the secretary endorsing israel's war goal to eradicate hamas. >> hamas cannot continue as a military or government force, and frankly, as long as it stands as a force that can govern or as a force that can administer, or as a force that can threaten by by use of violence, peace becomes impossible. they must be eliminated. >> prime minister netanyahu promising to do just that. >> we haven't finished the job. we will. israel will destroy hamas military and government capabilities. gaza will look differently. >> president trump, weighing in after setting a deadline last week for all of the hostages to be handed over by noon on saturday, writing on his social media platform that it's up to israel to decide what to do about the deadline and that the

u.s. will back whatever decision they make. three more hostages were reunited with their families on saturday after being released by hamas. but there is still concern for the remaining 70 hostages. families imploring netanyahu to move into phase two of the cease fire, which calls for all of the hostages to be brought home. negotiators are expected to meet in doha, qatar, this week to discuss how to move into phase two. and arab leaders are also working on an alternative plan to president trump's suggestion that palestinians be moved from gaza during reconstruction to neighboring egypt and jordan, a plan that has been widely criticized. marcus moore, abc news, tel aviv. >> the government shutdown continues. the irs will lay off thousands of probationary workers in the middle of tax season. the latest effort to shrink the government. and we now know whether san francisco will start to enforce meters on sundays. the decisions by city transportation officials on how they want to fill a budget deficit. >> i'm spencer christian,

mateo city hall to san francisco city hall to oppose mass deportations of immigrants. the march was organized by four young advocates from immigrant families, who formed the group rights over borders. >> we need to speak for the people who can't. we need to walk for the people who can't. it's we are here and we're we're so we have so much power that some people don't even realize they have. so your voice speaks volumes, and you need to come out and use your voice and send a message and make a statement. so that's why it was very important. >> for us. >> the organizers met years ago in high school now as young adults. rumors of ice raids in their city of san mateo and the bay area inspired them to take action. the 21 mile march made stops at san bruno city hall and daly city city hall in the south bay. dozens gathered to protest elon musk this afternoon. check it out. this was outside the palo alto tesla sales showroom. organizers say today's protest was to stand up against the

billionaire, calling him bad for democracy. all of this comes after anti-tesla protest events around the country yesterday. musk owns tesla along with space x and x, formerly called twitter, but is currently serving as a special government employee to president trump and heading the department known as doge. his role has drawn a lot of controversy in recent weeks, largely because of his access and decisions as a non-elected official. we are learning more today that the trump transition's mission to reduce government waste is now focusing on the irs. about 15,000 irs employees on probationary status face possible termination as early as next week. abc news reporter chuck seaverson takes a closer look. >> sources say the employees do not work directly on processing tax filings, buto much of the agency's work is connected to that central mission. it's the latest move in the ongoing and unprecedented purge of the federal workforce.

>> we want to downsize government, but make it better. >> these sweeping cuts first targeting roughly 200,000 probationary federal employees across the government. at least 2000 workers fired from the department of energy. more than 1000 from veterans affairs and another 1000 from the centers for disease control, including half of the agency's doctors and scientists who respond to outbreaks at home and abroad. president trump empowering elon musk to dramatically slash the government's budget. these actions have left some fired federal workers scared of what's next. >> we're under attack by billionaires, but i'm not a billionaire. so, you know, for me, the next steps are scary. >> and now the pentagon, which employs 3.4 million troops and civilians bracing for possible cuts, too. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> we've been following sfmta's budget crisis. the agency is facing a $50 million budgets deficit for the next fiscal year. they say they've figured out where $35 million will come

imprisonment of 120,000 japanese americans during world war two. men, women and children were forced onto trains and sent to concentration camps without due process. organizers say the event should serve as a cautionary tale. >> here we're having a situation once again where the government is talking about imprisoning people based on their race because without due process. so i think our lesson. the object lesson here is that we don't want history to repeat itself. and that's why it's very important to have this kind of observance. >> survivors of the camps and their descendants led a candle lighting ceremony. san francisco's chinese new year parade may be over, but the festivities continue. people were out and about enjoying the community street fair in chinatown today. there were more than 100 vendor booths, activities and entertainment for all ages. it was on grant avenue from california to broadway, and the two day fair wrapped up at

5:00 this evening. we do have an awful lot more coverage of the chinese new year parade and all the festivities at our website, abc seven news.com. you can watch yesterday's parade in its entirety, and you can find links and stors right there on our home page. well, biologists have a new opportunity to keep tabs on california's small but rebounding gray wolf population. wildlife biologists last month captured and radio collared 12 wolves. the collars provide detailed information about habitat and location. biologists can then share that information with ranchers about wolf activity. the california department of fish and wildlife says it will begin issuing annual wolf reports starting in april. i say this all the time, but they're stunning to watch. and we've seen a few, i guess, coyotes around. >> right here on broadway, two blocks from the station. >> a little scary. >> yeah, just just a tad. nothing scary about the weather, though. >> no, we like it, actually.

>> yeah, it's going to be pretty nice. here's a look at the satellite radar image. it's pretty calm right now. we had some light sprinkles early this morning up in the north bay, but they quickly fizzled. high pressure will control our weather for the next couple of days, but there is a weak disturbance. another one brewing out at sea. that will be bringing us some light rain midweek, but then after that we get a spring like warm up. right now we have mainly calm wind, although a little bit breezy closer to the coast. sfo in san francisco 11 12 mile per hour winds and you can see it's a few degrees warmer in most locations. certainly here in the central part of the bay area than at this time yesterday. so let's move along and take a closer look. san francisco. 54 degrees, mid to upper 50s. also at oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city. 54 at half moon bay. at the golden gate. well, the air looks a little misty. clouds are getting lower there. we don't see we don't have any reports right now of any precipitation being measured. 54 degrees right now at santa rosa, petaluma, 52 mid 50s at napa, fairfield and livermore. concord is at 58 degrees. and a beautiful view of the western sky from emeryville.

a lot of texture there. looks like a painting almost. these are our forecast headlines. next two days, partly cloudy and dry. wednesday will bring light rain, mainly to the north bay, and after that, a nice string of sunny days and warm springlike warmth building here. but right now we're looking at the satellite of the forecast animation for the late night hours. it will start to get clearer as we approach midnight, but then after midnight a few more clouds will enter the picture. so tomorrow is going to be a partly cloudy but dry day. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the mid 40s, so relatively mild, but a little chillier in some spots like santa rosa where the low will drop to 38. fairfield will have a low of 39. and then as tomorrow develops, we'll see partly cloudy skies. the sun will break through, but it won't be very mild tomorrow. most high temperatures will be in the upper 50s, although concord will top out at 60. san jose at about 62. now let's look ahead to the futurecast on tuesday night. it will be dry, but this next week rainfall system starts to swing in overnight

our hospitals are handling it and what you can do to stay healthy. plus, the grand finale to our all star weekend. has san francisco's mayor passed his first big test? the feedback from fans tonight on abc seven news at 11. finally. now an opossum is gaining national attention for binge eating an entire costco cake. listen to this. kim dodge it left the cake on her front porch of her nebraska home because her fridge was too full. she got to, you know, keep it cool. yeah. hours later, she learned a hungry opossum ate the entire thing she called animal care. when the stuffed possum would not leave. nebraska wildlife rehab says the animal was panting. seemed alert. would be okay. apparently, this opossum now has its own t shirt. it's a big business now. i mean, who would have thought? >> maybe he'll be my next agent.
