and welcome back to california academy of sciences, is asking for your help with a project documenting the world all around us. researchers are working on creating a permanent record of plants with information that sometimes centuries old. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian explains how you can help. >> in a back room at the california academy of sciences,

charlotte ping and her colleagues are making millions of plants immortal or as close as they can be for researchers. they're using a sophisticated imaging system to photograph and digitally archive the academy's entire botany collection. 2.3 million samples gathered from around the world and placed in order with incredible precision. >> we have different barcodes that know to tie different specimens to different folders, so all of the metadata is automatically created through that software as well, which is a lot more convenient than if you were taking a bunch of pictures with your phone. >> and a lot more powerful. assistant curator sarah jacobs says the samples help tie together the earth's genetic tree, if you will. researchers from across the globe will be able to access images of the samples and the multi-level data that's attached to them, offering a unique look into the plants that have evolved around us. >> sometimes we open up folders and look at specimens that were collected in places that are urban now in, you know, hundreds

of years ago by people that are long gone. >> and now it turns out that understanding those collectors from centuries past is key to finishing the project. as sophisticated as technology is, it sometimes takes a keen human eye to accurately decode the elegant handwriting and sometimes cryptic markings originally placed on the collection card. >> so this is a mix of cursive and basic script, and this is very difficult for computers to read. and really, humans do the best job of reading this information. >> and she says you can help by joining an online army of citizen scientists. the project is called plants to pixels and runs through the end of the month. volunteers go online to help read and transcribe data from the digital images, translating them for the record. >> and the beauty of that is that anybody, anywhere, anytime can help us to move through these hundreds of thousands of

later on tonight. tomorrow morning there will be some dense fog around 30 and 40. and by the early afternoon, temperatures are coming up into the 60s for our mildest spots. so it will be a milder day, upper 50s to the mid 60s and partly cloudy. now, i do want to show you the system that is headed our way on wednesday. it's going to bring the pacific northwest and northern california most of the energy, but we get a few showers out of it and it will be spotty in nature. but then after that, there's nothing in the accuweather seven day forecast as far as rain. it is going to be dry and milder. we do have 70 showing up as we hit the weekend, which is above average for this time of year. so definitely a change in our pattern as dionne mentioned. dan dan. >> all right. thanks sandy, very much. >> well, the nba all-star weekend wrapped up in san francisco. arguably, thoughe biggest star of the festivities wasn't a pro basketball player, but an 18 year old college student from oakley. today i spoke with jaron barajas about

his once in a lifetime shot that earned him $100,000. on the baseball field of los medanos college in pittsburg. it's practice, as usual for the mustangs, except for 18 year old jaron barajas, who's still running on adrenaline. >> it was a long night. it was hard to get up, didn't get much sleep. >> the second baseman is now known across the nation not for his skills on the diamond, but for what he did on the hardwood during sunday night's nba all star game. >> we're going to grab someone random from the stands to compete against damian lillard for this 100 grand. >> out of thousands of spectators, youtube's biggest star, mr. beast, invited jaren to go toe to toe with the milwaukee bucks point guard. >> it was such a surreal moment. >> jaren needed to make just one basket from half court before lillard made three. dad michael, who surprised him with tickets to the game the night before, gave his son this advice. >> i said, hey, whatever comes your way, don't be shy. go have fun and see what happens. >> as a lifelong basketball player, jaren, who you see here

wearing number 14 scoring points as a middle schooler felt confident. >> i usually like shooting from behind the three point line. >> even exhibiting some swagger on the court. >> anything you want to say to everyone. >> first try? come on. >> but after the oakland native quickly sank, one and jaren kept missing. >> and i was just praying he was going to come close. >> even commentator and former nba star kenny smith offered some coaching. >> visualize before it goes in. then it goes in. >> lillard, one of the best three point shooters in the league, then sank his second basket while jaren struggled. uh- just as the buzzer goes off and the ball leaves jaren his hands are. the ball goes in. even steph curry is in disbelief. >> this is surreal. i can't thank anybody but my dad. >> this college freshman is now $100,000 richer and has responsible plans for his newfound fortune. >> definitely save a lot of it and help my family out a lot. it'll help with pay. college.

is back. the giants held their first full squad workout today in scottsdale. the giants they've only averaged 80 wins the past three seasons, and everybody knows that is not going to get it done. when you're in the same division as the defending world champion dodgers. abc seven's chris alvarez in arizona. so what's the vibe like in scottsdale? chris. hey, larry. >> i think the vibe is good here. i'm reminded of that old saying, hope springs eternal when spring training rolls around. and now the full squad is here. the vibes are good. you know that. the giants have got justin verlander, willie adams among some of the new

additions, and i had a chance to go one on one with the new gm, zach magnuson, to talk about those vibes and his thoughts on this upcoming season. >> it's always hopeful this time of year. so, but really exciting. anytime you know u get a collection of talent on the field, we're all interested to see everyone and how they've grown over the offseason. and it's been great so far. and you know, this time of year, the biggest thing is you just want guys healthy. and for the most part, i think we're relatively clean there and just excited about, you know, you get the full workouts, then you're just waiting for games. so anxious for those to start. >> from the plan you hadom of your marks with the players and acquisitions and stuff like that? >> yeah, i'm probably always going to grade myself as an incomplete. so always looking to

achieve more and more. that's who i want us to be as an organization, just striving to get better. certainly like where we're at with with the addition of willie adonis, justin verlander, it's been awesome to watch jv's pens and him sharing some knowledge with our younger pitchers. >> the goal is every team wants to win the title. the immediate challenge is right in your division of just, you know, push them along and get yourself in a position where you can compete in october? >> yeah, i think i just go back to focusing on ourselves and who we want to be as an organization. we're fortunate to have a model of what worked in years past. and as we build this thing out and, and strive to build a good pitching staff, be a good defensive ballclub, we think that's going to be our north star going forward and having a competitive club that that compete with any club. you know, not only the dodgers. so i try not to focus too much on them as much as, hey, who do we want to be and let's go and get it. >> fun to chat with zach today. now in other baseball news, larry mark kotsay, the a's manager, new contract extension for him through

the 2028 season. a club option for the 29 season will be with the a's on wednesday here in arizona, but tomorrow, a full day of giants will be here from start to finish as day two of full squad workouts begins here in scottsdale. send it back to you, larry. >> a's. who are they? oh, that's right, the a's. yes. uh- all star weekend in the bay area a big success, bute nba has got a problem on their hands. the new all star game format did not get rave reviews from the players or fans, so they experimented with four teams, eight players on a squad, including one team of rising stars steph curry. the half court shot was amazing. he won the mvp, but there were so many stoppages yesterday. they held a ceremony in the middle of the championship game which made absolutely no sense. warriors star draymond green not a fan of this format. >> you work all year to be an all star and you get to play up to 40 and then you're done. now we get the treat of watching the olympic team play against the u19 team. come on. what are we doing? >> scale of 1 to 10, your
