like super loud bang. and then everything just goes literally sideways. >> a normal flight up until the final frightening seconds. amazingly, all 80 people on board this delta flight survived, even with their plane upside down and smoking on the runway. just incredible. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. 18 people were hurt in the crash landing this afternoon. communications from the pilots were normal as the plane approached the runway in toronto tonight. investigators are trying to understand how this landing could go so wrong so quickly. >> drop it. come on. >> chaos on the runway as a delta airlines flight lands and flips upside down, ending up with no wings, no tail, and a fireball out the window. dramatic images showing smoke rushing out of the fuselage after the plane carrying 80 people crash lands at toronto pearson international airport. >> toronto. we just landed. our

plane crashed. it's upside down. fire departments on site, upside down. >> john nelson was on that. delta regional crj 900 operated by endeavor air out of minneapolis. >> it was mass chaos. i was upside down. the lady next to me was upside down. we kind of let ourselves go and fell to hit the ceiling, which is surreal feeling. and then everybody was just like, get out, get out, get out. >> just so you are there's people outside walking around the aircraft there. yeah, we've got it. the aircraft is upside down and burning. >> emergency crews rushed 18 people to local hospitals, with one child among the injured. two adults critically hurt. but everyone survived. >> this is in due part to our heroic and trained professionals, our first responders. >> analysts say the plane's safety features likely saved lives. >> the 16 g seats, which were put into the aircraft many years ago, prevented the seats from

coming apart during this accident, which made it survivable. the other thing that made it survivable was that the breakaway bolts in the wings. once the aircraft starts rolling like that, if these wings don't break off, it tears that fuselage in half and causes fatalities. >> the fire chief for the toronto airport says the runway was dry at the time of the crash and there were no crosswinds. however, gusts of up to 40 miles an hour had been reported and blowing snow was clearly visible after the crash. this crash, adding to a series of aviation accidents rattling travelers. coming less than a month after 67 people died in the midair collision in washington, dc, and a medical jet crash in philadelphia that killed seven. now, the ntsb is helping canadian authorities investigate this crash. the airport's ceo says two runways will remain closed for several days. well, tonight we're learning new details about the 15 year old boy killed at san jose santana row, last friday night. the teenage boy was stabbed to death

during a date on valentine's day. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with his devastated family tonight. >> this is 15 year old david gutierrez, a young man who was stabbed to death at santana row last friday, valentine's day. his family says he was on a date with his girlfriend to celebrate when he was attacked by a group of teens. monday night, family members issued a statement about david's death, saying our precious young boy is an amazing young man whose life was taken too soon at the age of 15. he was enrolled in college bound classes to help him prepare for college. he was active in the community church activities. he was also active here at gladiators boxing gym in redwood city. >> he was a good kid. he was outgoing, friends with everybody here, everybody here, all these young guys here. you see, everyone was a friend of his. somebody so young and devastating how it went down and all that. >> that's david's boxing instructor, berto burrito. he

seven news.com or on our abc seven bay area app as well. >> now our president. no way. >> we are in the middle of a constitutional crisis. >> elon musk has got to go. >> this president's day, thousands of people across the nation gathered to protest president trump. organizers called it the no kings on presidents day demonstration. these were the scenes across the bay area, including san francisco, oakland and san jose. the demonstrators denouncing both president trump and billionaire elon musk's involvement in the federal government. many criticizing musk's leadership of doge, his newly formed department of government efficiency, as well as layoffs of thousands of federal workers. other protests today targeted elon musk specifically. hundreds of people protested in front of the tesla showroom on van ness in san francisco today. some of the protesters telling us they sold their stock in musk's companies and even sold their cars.

>> i did own a tesla. i owned a tesla for three years and enjoyed it as a car. but what it now stands for is very different for me. i think it's an important statement. you know, we need to figure out ways to put pressure on these guys so they recognize that not everybody believes on this president day that trump represents them. >> today's demonstration followed similar protests at tesla dealerships in the bay area and around the nation on saturday. we are getting new insight tonight into the impact of the drastic cuts carried out by elon musk's team. doge now says what it's doing will save $55 billion for the federal government. the agency claims that number is a combination of canceling contracts, leases and grants, selling assets and cutting the federal workforce. among those cuts, hundreds of faa employees. the union for those workers says the firings started late friday night. the transportation department says the cuts do not impact air traffic controllers or any employees responsible for

critical safety roles. we spoke with aviation consultant and former director of community affairs at sfo, mike mccarron, who says the cutbacks may be too broad. >> the aviation industry has an incredibly great safety record, and it's because we have people in place to make sure things happen properly and to take a meat cleaver more or less and start whacking away at the system may not be the best solution. as far as trying to find ways to pare down the costs. >> fired workers could be barred from faa facilities as soon as tomorrow. all right, let's move on now to the accuweather forecast after a calm and dry presidents day. we are already tracking our next chance of rain. and abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is here. sandy. this obviously not nearly as intense as the last week's storms, right? >> not at all. dan, this is just going to be a little teaser, if you will. so let me show you a live picture right now from our emeryville camera. it's a beautiful view of san francisco on this presidents day. here comes live doppler seven and the

storm for wednesday. now all the energy is going to go into the pacific northwest and northern california. we're really just going to get the tail end of it. so let me show you what you can expect. wednesday at 5 a.m, some showers move into the north bay, really scattered at 8 a.m, and they move out so fast that we have not put a storm impact scale on it. but here's a look at what's ahead beyond those showers. look at the temperature trend. san jose's average high is 63. you're going to be about ten degrees above average this upcoming weekend. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming right up dan. >> all right sandy, thanks a lot. new at 11 a california based sailor is under federal indictment accused of selling fentanyl that killed another sailor in the bay area. according to court documents. the victim died while visiting family in san leandro in 2023. he had been assigned to the uss abraham lincoln, based in san diego. ten days later, another sailor overdosed but survived. federal prosecutors say the suspect and the first victim sold drugs together. all right.

time now to our abc seven news at 11, where we help you get ahead of the headlines you will be seeing in the next few days. first, alameda county is swearing in its new district attorney. tomorrow, judge ursula jones dixon will take over the da's office. the board of supervisors selected her after voters recalled the previous da, pamela price. judge jones dixon will take over a department struggling with a huge case backlog and facing criticism from families of crime victims. she will serve at least until 2026, when voters will elect a new da. our next advancer tomorrow, leaders in napa will weigh in on a controversial proposal for glamping. it's getting strong pushback from residents there. the plan calls to turn this area shaded in orange, near the silverado trail and hagen road, into a massive resort. now, the vision for the grange campground includes up to 100 high end camping trailers,

tents, a pool, and five permanent buildings. neighbors are raising concerns about traffic and safety. they say the area tends to flood when it rains, and they're worried about adding fire pits in an area with a lot of wildfire risk. >> it's going to end up in litigation unless they can somehow prove that this is not dangerous. >> the city of napa says the proposals comply with city code and state law. locals started a petition and a fundraising effort to fight the project, raising more than $16,000. all right. our last adventure here at 11, state senator scott wiener and mayor daniel lurie are expected to announce a plan tomorrow to boost nightlife in downtown san francisco. it's key to lurie's recovery strategy for downtown. wiener's office says he will introduce new legislation to make it easier for nightlife businesses to open up at a lower cost in a designated area downtown. last year, wiener authored the bill to expand san francisco's entertainment zone policy across

who was once declared dead in san mateo county, is now in jail. court records show jack lasorda's family had her legally declared dead in 2022, believing she had fallen into san francisco bay. well, she's now facing gun and trespassing charges, and her group has ties to a number of homicides, including one killing in vallejo just weeks ago. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez

explains this complicated web of allegations. >> after months on the run, police arrested an apparent leader of a cult like group with bay area ties. the group, called the visayans, has been linked to several deaths spanning three states. one month ago, maximilian snyder is accused of murdering his landlord, curtis lynn, in vallejo. police believe the motive was to keep lynn from testifying that two of his former tenants tied to the ian's, attacked and nearly killed him two years earlier. days after the vallejo killing, another alleged member of the group is accused of killing a u.s. border patrol agent during a traffic stop in vermont. investigators say the gun used in the vermont shooting has been linked to the killings of richard and rita in 2022. sunday, police in maryland arrested their daughter, along with jack lasota, on gun and trespassing charges. online writings from the group span multiple anarchist theories, including radical veganism, or they look to end the human consumption of animals.

the fact that people are willing to do whatever they can, it just makes us not feel like we're alone and that what we do actually matters. >> the business set up a gofundme, which has already raised more than $40,000. for now, the front of the store is boarded up, but customers can still enter through the side. well, today, southwest airlines announced plans to cut 15% of its corporate workforce. that's more than 1700 people. it is the first time mass layoffs have happened in the company's history. the company says the cuts will start in april. they include 11 senior leadership positions. the layoffs are expected to save the company roughly $510 million between this year and next. egg prices continue to crack record highs, as you've probably noticed at the store, leaving shoppers feeling, well, rotten about their grocery bills. the united states department of agriculture says wholesale egg prices rose by $0.40 in the past 30 days. the national average price for a
