federal partners, justice has been served. >> a major announcement today in a nearly 35 year old unsolved murder case. authorities identify a suspect in the slaying of an east bay woman. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> and i'm dan ashley. today, east bay regional park district police announced new dna technology led them to the killer of maria wiedorfer. they say the suspect was living in oregon and died by suicide last year. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland has the story of how detectives cracked the case. >> through this investigation, john lipari was determined to be a potential suspect and later became our primary suspect in 2024. >> after 35 years and no answers. east bay regional park district police identified a former martinez resident as the killer of 32 year old maria wiedorfer. john lipari died by suicide in oregon near the end of last year. his extended family posting this gofundme in

the days after his death. >> when it was a match, it was definitely bittersweet. i would have loved for him to know that we were zeroing in on him. >> hoffa's body was found on a trail near inspiration point here in tilden regional park. she was discovered with a rope around her neck, showing physical signs of a struggle. after being reported missing the night before, semen collected from hoffa's body decades ago, later uploaded to a genetic genealogy database, is what eventually turned up as a positive match. >> it's a long process. it takes time, but we were able to get a pool of suspects that we slowly went through, and eventually lipari became our primary in 2024. >> this comes nearly eight years after the department released these images of the suspect, generated by sending dna from the crime scene to a company, saying it can turn dna into a face, a face. detectives now say, matched lipari. >> because in 1990 we didn't

have the ability to extract dna in this fashion and process the dna, and certainly didn't have the ability to do the comparisons on a familial basis and even even just comparing it to, to a pool of potential suspects. >> lipari family was shocked to find out about his involvement just a week after his suicide. his former sister in law told us they're sending condolences to his family. detective rudy reading this statement from maria's brother hans. >> we would like to express our gratitude to law enforcement for their unceasing efforts and finally bringing some measure of closure to this tragedy. >> in orinda, lena howland abc seven news. >> and some new developments out of monterey county, where authorities issued an alert after smoke once again poured from a battery facility that caught fire weeks ago. that fire at the vistra battery facility in moss landing resulted in political and legal action, as people living nearby were

worried about their health. abc seven news reporter louis pena is in the newsroom with the very latest on the response to this new flare up loose. >> yes, dan, just last month, a large fire at the same battery facility led to the evacuation of residents in the surrounding area. today, health officials confirmed last night's fire is under control, but they're still monitoring the air quality. it happened again. another fire at the vistra energy battery storage facility in monterey county. this alert urging residents tuesday night to close windows and doors as fire crews fought the blaze. >> we first responders will remain uh- at the scene. >> the north county fire protection district detected the exact location of the blaze in an area known to them. they say a flare up like this one is not unusual. >> the fire started underneath a pile of rubble in a section that had previously burned. >> just last month, a large fire at this battery facility led to

the evacuation of residents as the county alerted them of unknown hazards posed by this smoke. during a press conference wednesday, monterey county officials said evacuations this time were not necessary. >> no readings have indicated any significant public health impact. our monterey bay air resource district has reviewed the smoke sensor data. air quality has remained in the good range for the past 24 hours. >> monterey county now asking the public to fill out this survey to track any symptoms residents may experience after these fires. district corp, which owns the moss landing facility, urging those impacted to apply for financial assistance. >> we are concerned about the impact and the disruption this has caused to our neighbors and to the businesses in the area, so we were very prompt in listening and taking action to programs that are still ongoing. >> on the phone. the on scene coordinator at the u.s.

environmental protection agency confirmed they are monitoring this incident and working on ways to prevent future fires. >> it's called delinking the batteries. and basically what that does is it disconnects the batteries and that reduces the likelihood of propagation and the likelihood of a large fire. >> the u.s. environmental protection agency's plan is set to be deployed on february 22nd. as to the air quality, they say they're sampling for heavy metals, but are not urging the public to close their windows and doors at this time. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc seven news. >> all right, luce, thanks very much. >> taking a live look from our camera in santa cruz. isn't that a pretty picture? people there living just south of the city, though, reported smelling smoke from the fire this morning. >> let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for more. now on the winds in that area and where the smoke could be traveling. sandia. >> yeah. dan and dion right now, winds are pretty light. take a look at the conditions near moss

landing. west northwest for gusting to six. temperature of 55 degrees. if anybody is experiencing the smoke, it's getting pushed into some of the inland areas. air quality right now from air. now the official reporting agency showing good air quality near moss landing. we did have some showers. if you recall earlier today. they passed through pretty quickly. they didn't amount to a whole lot. a few hundreds to about a 10th of an inch. right now. it is breezy over the higher terrain. hawkeye 30 miles an hour. mount diablo 23. tonight we're expecting those temperatures to drop into the 40s and 50 by 9 p.m. clouds will be starting to clear out. by morning, there will be some patchy fog. temperatures in the 30s and the 40. we are in for some big changes. i'll be back with the forecast coming right up dion. >> all right. looking forward to it. sandia. thanks. the first of 33 new speed cameras are now in place in san francisco. the city the first in the state to use the technology in an effort to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities. today, one group gathered at the intersection of geary boulevard and seventh

avenue to celebrate what they say is the beginning of a safer city. >> who wants to hang out in geary? right? it's like, so scary. it feels like a freeway. >> the group gathered at the corner of geary and seventh avenue in san francisco's richmond district, is celebrating the start of what they hope to be safer streets. >> geary street has statistically, a lot of fatalities. my mom is a traffic violence victim. this saturday will be 14 years ago on park presidio in anza. that a speeding suv struck her and flung her body to the other side of the road. >> legislation passed in 2023 allowed six cities in california to begin using speed cameras. last spring, sfmta approved plans for 33 to be installed across the city. sfmta determined the worst location for speeding in the city. right here. >> if people drive the rate that they're driving, there could be about 4000 tickets per day on geary street. >> their mobility, the company contracted to operate the cameras, says that once all 33

are installed sometime in march, a 60 day warning period begins. >> after that is when citations will be issued. a citation can start as much as $50, but if you're going well in excess of 11 to 15mph, that's when the fine increases. the legislation is written where it can go in excess of $500. >> in other cities, such as philadelphia and new york, where speed cameras have been in use for years. the company reports a 70 to 90% reduction in speeding pedestrian crashes decreased by as much as half. >> this is going to make a huge difference. >> earlier this month, vera mobility addressed privacy concerns, stating their product only captures license plates. >> know the vehicle, not the back of the vehicle. no faces. >> after six years of advocating for this legislation in california, walk sf sees these cameras as a hopeful step toward change. now take a look. this map shows the 33 intersections where those speed cameras will be going up. most are located near the approaches to

interstate 80 skyway, but as you can see, they really are all over the city. sfmta's website has progress updates as well on the cameras. it is important to note the law is written so that citations can be contested. this would apply to say, for example, if a car is ticketed when it is either being stolen or is being driven by someone else. >> muslim civil rights group is labeling stanford a hostile campus. the designation was made by the council on american islamic relations, known as care. the group accuses stanford of suppressing the voices of students who speak in support of palestinian issues. it comes after pro-palestinian demonstrators were arrested last year for taking over university buildings. several students were suspended. >> students are afraid to even hang a palestinian flag out the window of their dorm rooms to attend protest, to speak about palestine and class to wear keffiyehs in class or while out and about at the cafe for fear of repression and suspension.

>> care has designated more than a dozen university campuses as hostile toward pro-palestinian speech. a stanford university university spokesperson says its policies are viewpoint neutral and meant to protect the community and freedom of expression. >> today, san jose state university held a day of remembrance for the thousands of japanese americans incarcerated during world war two. more than 80 years ago, the u.s. forced 120,000 people into camps following the attack on pearl harbor. in building served as an intake processing center. the day of remembrance featured speeches, performances, and breakout sessions for discussions. >> students really appreciate being able to know the history. a lot of our students do not know the deep connection of san jose state and the campus to the history of world war two and japanese american incarceration, and so that's really important part of it. and so then they get educated on it, and they also get inspired to think about what does activism look like for this generation of students and how it connects to our history?

>> san jose state is also in the process of raising funds and finding an artist to design a. never again is now mural project on campus. >> local faith leaders marked this day of remembrance by protesting president trump's immigration policies. hundreds, including bishops, imams and rabbis marched to japantown in san francisco. they reaffirmed their commitment to provide sanctuary in their temples to immigrants facing deportation. the leaders are part of a lawsuit against the department of homeland security over a policy change that allows immigration agents to enter houses of worship, to detain undocumented immigrants. >> a major boost for one east bay city. up next, sutter health announces the location for its new $1 billion campus and medical center. >> and move over oakland. the prominent figure with the a's, who's ready to embrace the team's new home in west sacramento.

a $1 billion flagship campus in the east bay. the health giant says they've purchased 12 acres in emeryville along hollis street, and the new medical center will include labor and delivery, an icu, emergency services, operating rooms and more. it will start with 200 beds, but there are plans to expand. sutter health says it will replace the current services offered at their berkeley campus, which will shift to offering urgent care and surgery. they hope to open the new medical center by 2032. >> right now to the organization that has left the east bay. spring training is now underway for the a's of west, who will be playing in minor league park in west sacramento for the last at least the next three years. >> abc seven s chris alvarez caught up with members of the green and gold to talk about the transition out of oakland. >> when did the reality set in that you won't be playing in oakland this year? >> yeah, honestly, i don't know

if that really has set in yet. obviously, you know, we know that we are playing in sacramento. uh- me personally, i'm definitely going to, you know, miss the coliseum. i love playing there. >> it still feels feels a little weird for me. i mean, my wife and i were talking and i said when we get up to oakland a couple of times and, you know, i haven't been there for this long stretch of time, but two years is a is a good stretch of time. for a young player. so just an adjustment. and you know, we're we're excited about the transition and everything now that that it's here. you know everything last season was we celebrated it for what it was. and you know tried to share as many moments as we could with the people from oakland. >> you refer to a home as, as somewhere, not necessarily as a, as a structure, but where your family is. our family will be together when we're together. sacramento is going to be our home and we're going to embrace that. i think that culture was built in oakland. you know that place. the coliseum has special feeling about it. and that feeling was embraced by the
