[ambient noise] for all of the lives that have been saved. >> thank you for joining us. i'm trevor ault. tonight, caitlin connelly, the woman at the center of a shocking murder trial, now out free after her manslaughter conviction was overturned. and she's pointing the finger at others. here's nightline co-anchor byron pitts.

>> are you a monster? >> no, i don't believe i'm a monster. i don't think anyone would call me a monster. >> do you think the owners might consider you a monster? >> no. i think if the owners are being honest with themselves, they know that there are monsters in their family. they're real monsters in their family. >> it's a case that has rocked this upstate new york town for almost ten years. caitlin connelly, convicted of poisoning her boss and onetime mentor mary yoder, the mom of her on again, off again boyfriend. >> it was unthinkable that anybody would want to murder mary. >> the case picked apart across the country, going viral in the abc news studios series. little miss innocent.

>> so if it wasn't me, who was it? >> prosecutors say she killed her ex-boyfriend's mother to get back at him. >> it just hit everyone. am i working with someone that would kill me? am i living with someone who would kill my mom? >> now 31, caitlin has spent the last seven years in prison. >> all right. >> but late last month, a stunning decision. a judge overturning her conviction. >> with this latest twist, i think people are thinking. is caitlin connelly an innocent person wrongfully convicted, or is she a calculated criminal who evaded justice? >> everybody loved my mom. she just was. happiness. happiness and love and light. it just. >> mary yoder was a mother of three who could light up a room. >> this is going to be an attempt to remember the evidence from yesterday. well, some of

the steps, because i don't remember it all for sure. >> a vivacious chiropractor who loved to dance. she and her husband, bill, ran a practice together. caitlin had been working for the yoders for years after she began dating their son, adam. speaking in the series little miss innocent about how she and mary remained close even after her breakup with adam. >> i think she saw me as like a daughter figure. and that was nice. we definitely got along well. >> mary's patient, lucianne gould, last appointment with her seared forever in her memory. >> mary was clearly not herself. it was like the light was turned off. something was very wrong. >> hi, honey. it's me. i'm driving home. i'm very sick. i love you, bye. oh, god. >> i received a text from my

father on a tuesday morning, and he said that my mom had been throwing up and had some vomiting and diarrhea. they thought that it just seemed to be some kind of viral gastrointestinal illness. >> the 60 year old ended up hospitalized. she died after suffering from multiple cardiac arrests. >> and less than 48 hours. my mom went from her typical happy, healthy self seeing patients in an office to having died. >> mary's family, devastated and desperate for answers, especially after they got the toxicology results. >> she's been poisoned by colchicine, which is a drug given to treat gout. mariota didn't have gout. >> then, four months after mary's death, an anonymous letter sent to both the medical examiner and sheriff's office pointing fingers at adam yoder,

mary's son, and saying the deadly poison could be found in his car. >> adam comes up to the sheriff's office. >> once he agreed to let us search his jeep. we go out with him to where his car is parked. >> they look underneath the seat and right where it said it was. in the letter. there is a package. >> along with colchicine was a crumpled receipt for the poison purchase. investigators called in caitlin, who had insight into the yoder family. they say she began pointing a finger at adam similar to the letter, prompting officers to ask if she had written it. >> so i again said, katie, if you wrote the letter, we need to know that. and it was at that point she admitted to writing the anonymous letter. we'd always said, you know, the person that wrote this letter is definitely you got to be considered a suspect in our case. >> caitlin would later denied to

>> i just don't hang out at the murder weapon because that's why they get caught, right? >> the guys also don't use poison. what do. >> we do? >> they say it's the baby's mother. >> this is the lady's weapon? >> yeah. >> after that conversation, the sheriff's office would file this warrant to seize caitlin's cell phone. >> katie approached us and said, you know, oh, my goodness, you guys will never believe it. you know, they think i did this. and i just remember being dumbfounded, like, how could you get it so wrong? >> caitlin had always been close with her parents and sisters. >> i grew up with my three younger sisters. we were always together. thick as thieves. >> there's no way that she could have changed and been a jekyll

and hyde. >> prosecutors disagreed. caitlin was indicted by a grand jury charged with murder. she went on trial in april 2017. after three weeks, a hung jury, unable to reach a unanimous decision. she was retried in october of that same year. this time, the prosecution called upon a forensic expert who had uncovered more of caitlin's digital footprint. >> the game changer comes when i'm reexamining adam yoder's laptop. on that laptop were numerous backups of cell phones. and about the third file we examined, we realized this is not adam's phone. this is caitlin's phone. first thing was like, smack right in the face. she takes mary yoder's body

weight and then fills out the formula for how much colchicine would be necessary to kill mary caitlin. >> then 24, was acquitted on the higher charge of murder but convicted of first degree manslaughter and sentenced to 23 years. >> then. all right. >> just last month, an appeals court overturning caitlin's conviction. an appellate court finding that the forensic examination and memory extraction of her cell phone's content exceeded the scope of the warrant. >> the court recognized that our phones contain so much information that it is almost like walking into your home and looking through your things. and if you want to search my phone, you must have a specific targeted warrant for that. >> the court also noting we agree with defendant. she was denied effective assistance of

watched newscast. >> welcome back, the menendez brothers. a month away from a decision about their possible resentencing for speaking out by calling into a podcast from prison. here's abc's matt gutman. >> tonight, in an extraordinary move, the menendez brothers calling into a podcast. tmz's two angry men podcast with harvey levin and mark geragos. their defense attorney, erik menendez, describing the terror behind bars. >> i faced a lot of bullying and trauma. there was a it was a dangerous environment. >> what happened to you? >> i was picked on, bullied violently, and it was traumatic.

and it was continual. and, you know, there's the things that a lot of inmates in prison go through. and when they're not part of a gang structure. >> and erik says he didn't fight back. >> i'm not going to fight back. i'm not going to, you know, engage. and i had no one to really to turn to for help. >> the brothers served 21 years of their sentence in separate prisons. erik, describing how he felt when he says he learned his brother lyle had been violently attacked. >> i was told lyle just got assaulted and got his jaw broken. and it was, i'm thinking, he's over there, i'm going through this over here. and at least we could protect each other. maybe if we were together. >> next month, the brothers face a critical hearing when a judge will decide whether they should be resentenced for the gruesome murders of their parents. kitty and jose. the 2024 netflix series, shining a spotlight on their case and the alleged sex abuse by their father. >> this is done. >> this is done. >> you understand?

>> lyle believes that the tv show helped people understand the childhood trauma he and eric endured. >> our thanks to matt and the new los angeles d.a. told abc news he and his team have been examining the menendez case file, but they've yet to make a decision on whether to recommend resentencing. we want to shift gears now on this thursday night, daisy ridley, an actress and producer whose roles have taken us to a galaxy far, far away and through the treacherous waters of the english channel. her latest film takes us inside an action packed crisis. in daisy sat down with nightline's ashton singh. daisy ridley, thank you so. >> much for joining us. welcome to nightline. >> thank you. >> you first broke out as. >> ray in the star wars the force awakens. we saw you in young woman in the sea. >> you go to england or die trying. >> and murder on the orient express. >> when it's done, then nothing can touch us. >> did those roles prepare you for the action that went into this new project? >> i feel like i've picked up

skills along the way. i've been lucky enough to work with amazing stunt teams each time, and i take my own fitness, i suppose, very seriously. and this actually felt like the most action film i had done. so i had six weeks before we started filming, fighting, getting very comfortable with everyone and getting very comfortable with the choreography in quite a small area. >> in cleaner, you're actually a window cleaner who is tasked with saving a hostage situation of about 300 hostages. we have a clip from the film. let's take a look. >> yes. >> daisy. you spend most of this film hanging from the side of a building. was it comfortable doing your own stunts? i have to imagine that was pretty scary. >> i don't love heights, so that was something i did think the director had said that i was actually going to be hanging off the top of a really tall building, which was filling me with dread. so when we weren't allowed to do that, i was

relieved. so i got more comfortable with the height aspect of things, but i think it's really fun to physically learn a new skill. >> did you actually have to learn how to be a window cleaner? >> yeah, i had legitimate lessons because it's really hard to do it. but honestly, i look at people doing it on high voltage and i'm like, kudos to you. >> you got a new sense of appreciation for it. now, you mentioned the director, martin campbell. you've actually worked with him before. he's of fame of casino royale. did you feel like you had to channel a little bit of james bond to take on the role of joey? >> well, it was interesting asking him about james bond because of course, he's known so much for action. and i was rewatching his films as we were filming. one of the reasons i signed on was because i was so thrilled to be working with him. but i was asking him bond questions. yeah, it's always like that. but that combination he does so beautifully of action with real character, real relationships, and that heart of the story that people have to connect with. you know. >> you've been so open about your diagnosis with grave's disease, did that make making

this movie especially it being so action packed challenging at all? >> well, interestingly, i got the diagnosis just before we started filming and i had been feeling really poorly that summer. i had just started medication, so i was just starting to feel like myself, and i was trying to not do too much taxing things. and then obviously was going into this film, but luckily everything was just settling as we were going into filming. >> you've been so outspoken about the fact that your relief came from being able to pinpoint the source of your symptoms. how has your life changed since? since. so bravely coming out publicly with this diagnosis? >> i think it's interesting because honestly, one of the big things that women share is that we're often underdiagnosed or undiagnosed. so it was something i felt it was just what i was saying in the moment. and then it sort of was spread further than i assumed it would. strangely. but it's been quite lovely because a lot of people have talked about maybe getting

a diagnosis or going to the doctor if they're not feeling right and not putting off their symptoms. >> you guys talk a little bit about environmental extremism and going to great lengths to, to, to achieve your goals with environmentalism in this film. is there a bigger message that you want audiences to take away from this film? >> it's interesting because it does cover so much, and the real villain goes to real extremes with what he's saying. but the core of what he's saying is that we should all be nicer to the earth, which is, of course, something we can all understand. it's just he goes too far. >> daisy, thank you so much for joining us today. really appreciate it. >> thanks for having me. >> our thanks to ashton. and you can catch cleaner in theaters tomorrow. when we come back, a tomorrow. when we come back, a new kind of high speed freeway ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ bear! ♪ ♪
