out the door because we are starting out in the 40s for the most part. 41 in fremont. good morning. 43 that current temperature in san mateo in the north bay. some 30 on the board. sonoma, napa. it is chilly right now, 38 and 39 respectively. but yesterday we got into the low 70s in sonoma and napa. and later on this afternoon it will be nice and mild. so the jacket leave it on until about 10 a.m. after 10 a.m. we warm up nicely. so here's your noon temperatures. and you can see a lot of us into the low 60s at that hour. and then later on this afternoon, we'll have partly cloudy skies and really comfortable temperatures a few degrees above average for evening plans by about 730. those numbers are starting to dip into the 50s. closer to midnight we'll go into the 40s, so just be aware of that. have that jacket with you later on tonight. so highs today under partly cloudy skies 63 in the city. we'll go to 66 in oakland, 70 in san jose, 68 in santa rosa, 66 in concord. let's take a look at the roads this morning. good morning. >> good morning. and so far so good. we're looking at fy light to lots of gaps amongst

those headlights on the east shore freeway 80 westbound and making your way past university and on into emeryville and the macarthur maze. no metering lights yet. a nice easy drive from hercules all the way through the 80 corridor into san francisco. beautiful ride on the golden gate. we did have some road work this morning southbound that has been just now picked up. you are back to three lanes of both directions before they get the fourth lane open in the southbound commute, just a minor slowing up and over the altamont pass as our early morning commuters out of the central valley start to get going this morning. otherwise, we are all in the green. >> happening today, the topic of school closures is back on the table in the north bay. santa rosa city schools will hold a special board meeting to try and hah out a closure plan. wednesday night's meeting went on for hours, with a contentious debate over the possible closure of a high school. ultimately, the board did not reach a finale decision. we know for certain that three elementary schools are closing albert bella brooke,

brooke hill and steele lane. the district is dealing with a $20 million shortfall. today's meeting happens at 3:00. it's going to decide the fate of several middle schools and that high school. the district says its goal is to avoid extensive layoffs. >> two schools are slated to close in the vallejo city unified school district, as the district deals with declining enrollment and a budget deficit. this week, the school board voted to shut down mare island health and fitness academy and loma vista environmental science academy. a decade ago, vallejo had nearly 14,000 students in their district. today, they have fewer than 9000. the district also faces an almost $36 million budget deficit over the next two years. >> it's a significant loss roughly 400 kids a year. when you can. you think about that. 400 kids is about a school. it's a small elementary school. so losing a small elementary school for years and then not shifting or making the decision to close schools, it's hitting all at the same time. >> the superintendent says these

closures only make up a fraction of the deficit. some more closures may be necessary in the future. a charter school is planning to move into the mare island academy campus when it leaves this summer. >> a judge has ordered former san francisco nonprofit exec john jacobo to stand trial on rape and other sexual assault charges. he's accused ofsault assaulting a housing rights activist. he resigned from his job in april over the allegations. during yesterday's hearing, the judge allowed the prosecution to submit into evidence a 25 minute video that showed instagram messages between jacobo and the alleged victim. also, a motion by jacobus attorney to have the alleged victim testify got thrown out. his attorney claims the charges are politically motivated. >> embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus has been asked not to attend an upcoming san francisco police officers association event, the chronicle reports. corpus was sent a letter saying she is, quote, not welcome at the event, which will celebrate

50 years of service by female sfpd officers. corpus is at the center of a misconduct investigation. she is accused of using racial and homophobic slurs to degrade colleagues, and about having an appropriate relationship with her chief of staff. in a letter from sfpd president, the organization says, quote, these women honored the badge, honored the profession, and served as role models for young girls who wanted to go into law enforcement to serve their communities. your presence is an affront to their legacy. end quote. >> elon musk waved a chainsaw in the air while boasting about his effort to fire thousands of federal workers and shrink the size of the government made an appearance at a conservative conference yesterday, hours after nearly 6000 irs workers were notified they were being fired in the middle of tax season. officials with the trump administration claim the layoffs will not affect the processing of tax returns. laid off.

workers are concerned there will be delays. >> you can only imagine with so many people being let go and so much kind of like information and potential being lost, people will probably expect some disturbances. >> whether or not you're getting a tax refund, musk is now suggesting every american should be getting a check from the government. he's pitching a $5,000 payment funded by the cuts made by the dodge group. california's high speed rail may be facing another delay. the trump administration is taking aim at the project that has already faced a lot of delays, cost overruns and even lawsuits. yesterday in l.a, a transportation secretary, sean duffy, announced a compliance review of the project. he said it's been mismanaged and wants an accounting for where $4 billion in federal funds has been spent. >> this is going to help determine whether billions of dollars in taxpayer money should remain committed to california's high speed rail. >> state senator jim acosta of

fresno defended the project. >> the delays and cost overruns have been a direct result of people who wanted to kill the project, who have litigated the project, who have delayed the project, that have added additional costs. so let's be clear about that. >> the rail authority ceo tells abc seven news they welcome the investigation and have every dollar accounted for. >> san francisco is joining a lawsuit over the removal of public health web pages, data and policies targeting dei programs. several groups, including lambda legal and the sf aids foundation, are challenging. the executive orders they say are threatening important programs and services. these groups are worried that federal funding they rely on to serve marginalized communities will be taken away. >> these organizations rely on federal funding to provide life saving and life affirming services. yet under these executive orders, their funding is being threatened or outright revoked simply because they

acknowledge the reality of the people they serve. >> the san francisco aids foundation is the leading plaintiff of this nationwide lawsuit. and it's not the only suit the trump administration is facing. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has the details on the growing legal battles. >> the legal pushback is piling up as president trump's executive actions continue coming down the pike. >> the trump administration is firing off these executive orders faster than the courts can react. >> california's attorney general already filing for complaints. and in san francisco, the counties leading a lawsuit against trump's crackdown on sanctuary cities. >> instead of sending it to congress, we've seen the courts since the 1950s and especially since the 1970s, step into that role. >> melissa michaelson is a political science expert and says there's been a shift toward sidestepping congress and legislating through the courts. >> some presidents have succeeded and some haven't, but

almost every president has tried to expand presidential power. >> but some states say it's gone too far. california suing the previous trump administration 123 times, according to the attorney general's office. this time around, coming under quick criticism from organizations like the center for american liberty today, calling the lawsuit over the end of die policies led by the san francisco aids foundation. >> posturing this lawsuit is totally premature. none of these organizations have lost any funding, at least as far as i can tell. so it's yet to be seen whether they're actually going to be injured by any of these executive orders. >> and some federal judges agree these cases are too early. this week, denying a request to block elon musk and doge from accessing data or firing federal employees. the judge noting the states haven't shown they will, quote, suffer imminent, irreparable harm. >> until we have clarity from the united states supreme court. i think we're going to be in a very confused state with a lot

of these executive orders and just whether or not they're binding. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> thanks, sarah 5-10. this morning we're looking at live doppler seven along with satellite. high pressure is blocking any sort of storm system from moving in this weekend. we have a storm out there in the pacific. this low is going to go well to the north. this high pressure is going to give us a lot of sunshine over the weekend, and it starts to warm us up a bit. that high is going to act like a little bit of a heat pump over the next couple of days. some high clouds streaming in from time to time. so it's partly cloudy here and there, but it will be a nice afternoon. any sort of visibility issues we have just right along the immediate coastline. a little bit of a marine layer this morning with half moon bay down to a mile visibility. elsewhere, we're doing just fine. where you see the number ten, that is picture perfect. we do have great visibility out there. in fact, you look from our east bay hills camera this morning. you see all the wao sutro tower blinking right there in the background. here's a look at the forecast today. your day planner shows you sunrise at 651

one was hurt. >> today marks eight years since devastating floods in the south bay. work is well underway on a project that could keep it from happening again. valley water and local lawmakers say they're almost finished with phase one of the flood protection work along coyote creek. crews built flood walls along a four mile stretch between old oakland road and i-280. >> in this specific area. the water would be up, but in the residences around the area, you wouldn't have any flooding. so basically, if this project was here, then you wouldn't have seen the impacts that you saw, at least in this area. now, the other phase of the project is required to protect the rest of the community against the 20-17 flows. >> phase two will extend along coyote creek from montague expressway to tully road. construction is expected to begin in 2026. and if you're looking for something to do with your kids this weekend, some of your favorite disney stars are taking to the ice in the east bay. >> disney on ice open at the oakland arena yesterday, debuting their new show. it's

problems. the weather cooperates and the extended outlook now looks even warmer next week, especially tuesday and wednesday of next week. warmer weather moves in here, so look at the morning forecast mix of sun and clouds. once that sun is up here, closer to 7:00, we'll kind of hang in the 40s through 8:00, and then we'll climb into the 50s post 9:00. so you need the jacket first thing, but by about 9:10 a.m. you can get rid of it just like yesterday. so highs very similar to yesterday 60 and 70 on the board under partly cloudy skies. so a bit above average for this time of year. sunset this evening at 556. so overnight tonight lows very similar to where we are right now. upper 30s mid 40s, partly cloudy skies. we will see a little bit of coastal fog developing but nothing widespread around the bay shoreline tomorrow. a little bit warmer that continues into sunday as well. i mean temperatures are just going to be oh so nice under partly cloudy skies. so looking at the black joy parade in oakland on sunday, we're looking fantastic. filtered sunshine throughout the afternoon. it's warm upper 60s closing in on 70

political tensions reaching a point between the u.s. and ukraine that a high level meeting was called off. but first, abc news reporter nicole d'antonio starts with the urgent investigation into a suspected terror attack in israel overnight. >> this morning, investigators combing through the wreckagers after multiple city busses exploded in tel aviv. israeli authorities calling it a suspected terrorist attack. the attack was believed to be planned for friday morning, meant to detonate during the rush when busses in israel are typically crowded with commuters. at least one device went off too early. fortunately, the busses were empty. sources tell abc news. investigators found a note indicating the attackers were seeking revenge for israel's ongoing operations in the west bank. >> and gaza. >> meanwhile, a news conference between ukrainian president zelensky and president trump's team was canceled thursday as political tensions deepened between the two countries. white house national security advisor

mike waltz, now responding to president trump's comments, calling zelensky a, quote, dictator while refraining from blaming russia for the ongoing war, and highlighted the importance of ukraine considering a deal that would grant the u.s. access to the country's extensive mineral resources. >> president trump is obviously very frustrated right now with president zelensky. the fact that that he hasn't come to the table, that he hasn't been willing to take this opportunity that we have offered. >> meanwhile, israel's military says one of the four bodies handed over by hamas on thursday did not belong to a hostage. israeli defense forces calling it a very serious violation by hamas. nicole de antonio, abc news, washington. >> the trump administration's effort to drastically shrink the federal government is also taking aim at federal buildings here in san francisco. we first told you about this yesterday morning. the white house wants to sell the nancy pelosi federal building that's on seventh street in soma, also

a building at 50 united nations plaza and another in san bruno. now we're learning the government would instead lease office space for federal agencies. former congresswoman jackie speier says the idea doesn't make sense. >> the lease is going to keep going up, and you're gg to be paying the property taxes, ironically, of the lessor, whereas you don't pay any property taxes when you are federal government. >> the federal building in san bruno stores national immigration archives. the building is named after congressman leo ryan, who was killed during the jonestown massacre in 1978. today, several southern california lawmakers are expected to introduce legislation to overhaul california's sanctuary state law. they're backing a bill that would prevent local jurisdictions from passing sanctuary city measures stronger than the current law. thetronger legislation would also require law enforcement to cooperate with immigration and customs enforcement regarding violent offenders and specific crimes.

>> sonoma state students and supporters, finding drastic spending cuts at the university, will have another chance to express their concerns today. a hearing to address the cuts is scheduled to take place on campus this afternoon. protesters plan to hold a rally ahead of the hearing. sonoma state administrators are planning cuts to education that would include the layoffs of about 60 faculty and staff members. the university is also considering discontinuing all athletics programs at the school. >> state firefighters with cal fire will no longer respond to emergencies in the southern part of santa clara county. instead, county firefighters will respond to those calls. but there's a lot to figure out here. the change impacts the green area on this map. unincorporated areas around gilroy and morgan hill, plus the community of san martin. here's abc seven news reporter laura martinez with the questions from neighbors and the county's answers. >> changes are coming for who will respond to emergencies and fires in south santa clara

county. on thursday, residents, fire personnel and county officials packed a town hall in san martin. the focus of board of supervisors vote switching fire response from cal fire to the santa clara county fire department. >> currently, the south county district is structurally fiscally imbalanced, meaning that its ongoing revenue is not enough to cover those expenses to keep those stations open. >> the south county district has three fire stations. it covers areas in san martin, parts of unincorporated gilroy, and morgan hill. >> this is the way to ensure stability and ensure continued fire protection for our residents. >> the union representing south county's cal fire workers said the vote to end the contract with them means more than 30 firefighters may be displaced, and residents who live in unincorporated south county have their own worries rattled by the l.a. fires. >> my concern is that while this is happening, which i think is fundamentally a good idea, i think la has happened since a

number of these things were started. >> county executive james williams and santa clara county fire chief suwanna kerkow were on hand to answer questions. but not everyone felt they left with answers. >> no, i think the meeting was more labor versus management issues. and we were the residents were sort of the spectators. >> the san martin neighborhood association helped moderate the meeting. board president stephen mchenry said this transition doesn't only impact residents there. >> the service that they deliver down here is not entirely to south county residents. for example, if you are a san benito county resident commuting to san jose and you have an accident on 101, the fire department here responds to your ems call and the service has been exemplary, and we expect it to continue to be that way with county fire. >> the county didn't share a timeline for when this change will kick in. in san martin, lauren martinez, abc seven news.

>> memorabilia belonging to san francisco's first black police chief has been reunited with his family after it was thought to be long gone. these are old mementos of former chief prentice earl sanders, who died in 2021. someone found them in a storage unit they won at auction and reported it to san jose police. as jpd worked with sfpd to return it to chief sanders daughter, the warriors are back in action tonight to start the second half of the season. fans wanting to cheer the team on in style can now pick up a limited edition peet's coffee tumbler with the warriors colors. former warriors center festus ezeli was at a peet's coffee in san francisco promoting the new merchandise. he also took a stab at being a barista. although it was briefly. the warriors tumblers are for sale at select peet's coffee locations across the bay area, and this sunday, the warriors host klay thompson, anthony davis and the dallas mavericks. that game is at 1230 right here on abc seven,
