>> good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we're starting with a troubling story out of antioch. a mother is under arrest tonight. accused of leaving four children home alone in poor conditions. >> the house is on spruce way, and police made the discovery after someone reported seeing a two-year-old running around unattended. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is following this developing story. she spoke to neighbors who say they were shocked to learn what happened. >> this is the first time ever happened. so far. there's so many police officers. >> antioch police found four young children living in poor conditions. this cell phone video was taken by david sarkar, who lives across the street. >> the kids were taken by the ambulance one this way and one the other. >> it was on thursday evening when officers responded to the home after someone reported finding a two-year-old child outside. when officers arrived, they found three additional children inside with no adults

around. police said when their 36 year old mother arrived back home, she was placed under arrest for child abuse related charges. >> i was really surprised it never happened before and as i said, i haven't seen that many officers around here, even the ambulances and other cars. >> on friday, investigators went back to the home. the contra costa fire department hazmat team said the home was uninhabitable. officials boarded up the front door and the city code enforcement tagged the home. we knocked on doors to ask if they knew the family or knew what happened. >> you guys are the ones that told me. i'm surprised about it. >> richard arnold said it's usually a quiet area and neighbors stay to themselves. he was sad to learn children were involved. >> i just really hope that everybody gets better. >> the children's ages two, two, five and eight were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation before being placed into the custody of child and family services. >> i'm so sorry about that, but

especially for the young kids. >> the tags on the garage and the door say there's no power in the home is unsafe to enter. the mother is being held on over $400,000 bail. in antioch. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> new at 11. we've known about san francisco unified school district's budget troubles for a while and have learned it's going to vote on tuesday on moving forward with layoffs. this is the first step in the process and could lead to hundreds of jobs being eliminated. staffing accounts for about 80% of the district's budget. the proposal would send out preliminary notices to 395 certified positions or certificated positions, and 164 classified positions. the district would then have to determine which employees to send notices to by march 15th. it does have the ability to rescind notices. the final notices would go out by may 15th. california college of the arts in san francisco has successfully raised nearly $45

million to help to secure its future. half the money came from nvidia's co-founder and ceo jensen huang. he's the world's 11th richest man, and it's the first time he's helped the college c.c.a. was facing a budget shortfall. layoffs and declining enrollment. huang's donation is the largest in the school's history. >> new developments tonight, with a school closures in santa rosa as the district deals with a $20 million deficit. the school board went back at it today after a meeting earlier this week, went on for hours and ended without a final decision. a total of four schools were in the board's crosshairs. elsie allen high school drew the most pushback when it was discussed wednesday night. tonight, it has a reprieve, as the board voted to only close the three middle schools. abc seven news reporter tara campbell is on the story. >> reporter after months of heated debate, the doors of elsie allen high school will stay open. >> this has been an alarm. this has been a huge alarm for our

district. >> santa rosa city schools board of trustees voting on its fate friday. it and a handful of other schools have been on the chopping block. as the district stares down a deepening deficit and declining enrollment. >> i do apologize that this meeting this afternoon is even necessary. >> the 5 to 1 vote comes on the heels of an impassioned nearly six hour meeting wednesday. hundreds of students, staff and family members rallying the majority in support of elsie allen, arguing closing it would disproportionately target the latino community. more than 90% of the students there are latino. >> trustee. karsten. >> yes. >> trustee de la torre. >> yes. >> friday, the board voted in favor of a plan to close three middle schools and transition four high schools to serve seventh to 12th grade students. also saying yes to restructuring elsie allen into a specialized school focused on project based learning. >> it's a plan with accommodations that a lot of

hard work has gone into in the last 48 hours to try and even see what was possible, because every single one of these trustees and the community was not comfortable with the options that we were looking at. >> starting next academic school year, santa rosa and herbert slater middle schools will close, and santa rosa and montgomery high schools will start serving seventh through 12th grade students the following academic year. comstock middle school will close, while piner and elsie allen high schools open up to seventh through 12th grade. >> district's lack of transparency about how the seven through 12 model will actually look like is unacceptable. >> some teachers voicing their concerns during a brief public comment period ahead of the vote. >> our staff is the backbone of our success and separate us. separating us will have lasting and damaging effects. the board. >> also voted on boundary changes friday, which will be worked out in coming months with public input. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> all right, let's turn your attention now to the effort to

save sonoma state's entire athletics program on top of 23 academic programs. sonoma state's head baseball coach wants lawmakers to reverse the decision. they visited campus today for a legislative hearing. it's been one month since the university announced drastic cuts. >> if you want to, there's a way. there always is a way to find the money. >> we need to be able to see a comeback plan. it's up to the university and it's up to the csu system to develop that comeback plan. sonoma state is not corporate america. it's not tesla. simply cutting your way out of this isn't going to be successful. >> sonoma state's president agreed to legislators request to present a comeback plan within 30 to 60 days. >> we're going to turn now to the weather. it is a beautiful friday night as we take a live look at sfo. it has felt a lot more like spring these past couple of days. meteorologist sandhya patel joins us now with how the weekend is looking. sandhya.

>> fabulous. let's take a look at the temperatures for today and you will notice it was anywhere from 66 in san francisco to 72 in napa, santa rosa. really? these temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees above average for this time of year. 68 in san jose. and it's a beautiful view from our roof camera as we look at coit tower. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow morning. fog and clouds 3040 filtered sunshine at noon time and you get a taste of spring once again with low 60s to low 70s. breezy and cooler later on in the evening. i've got an even warmer forecast coming your way. i'll let you know when in just a few minutes. >> all right. thank you. sandhya. in the south bay, a sunnyvale police officer won't face any charges for a deadly shooting last march. 19 year-old manuel perez becerra had called police on himself and was carrying a kitchen knife. now, body camera video showed him walking toward the officer as he was being ordered to stop. now, the santa clara county district attorney's office, in its report, cited a witness who said

the officer had no choice but to open fire. perez becerra's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit last month. >> san francisco's crackdown on drugs in the tenderloin is causing a migration to other areas of the city. the mission district is the latest community to see an increase in drug use and sales. mayor lurie has been very vocal about his mission to clean up sixth street. two miles away, the so-called side effect is causing concern among residents and merchants. >> we've noticed an increase in drug dealing, use of hard drugs, folks blocking the entrance to our business. >> they have my commitment that i'm going to be relentless on going after it in the mission as well. i have done many walks this some streets there are unacceptable. >> the castro is also attracting the spillover. these photos were taken this morning. the mayor says the city is improving but he is still not satisfied. >> it's been another busy day in washington. president trump fired the chairman of the joint

chiefs of staff, putting the pentagon into turmoil. a federal judge blocked president trump's executive order seeking to end government support for programs promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. in other developments, the president scored a legal victory when a federal judge allowed his plans to dismantle usaid to move forward. and the associated press is suing trump administration officials over access to presidential events, citing freedom of speech. the administration blocked the ap after it refused to change the gulf of mexico to gulf of america and its style guide. earlier in the day, the president clashed with maine's governor over transgender rights at a white house event. the trump administration is backing off a plan to eliminate seasonal national park service workers by reversing the freeze. this will allow the system to bring in people to help maintain and run the parks as we head into the summer months. the memo will allow for the hiring of up to 7700 workers. there's no mention of the probationary employees who were let go earlier this week. >> coming up, the menendez

warn her of the fire forecast. crowley will remain employed by the department at a lower rank, and her duties will be assigned by the interim fire chief. >> now to an update on the menendez brothers case. the los angeles county district attorney today made it very clear that he opposes a new trial for eric and lyle menendez. however, he did not rule out resentencing them for killing their parents. reporter anabel munoz, with our sister station in los angeles, has the story. >> for nearly 30 minutes, los angeles district attorney nathan hochman outlined the evidence his office has reviewed in the menendez brothers murder case. then he took a position on their petition for a new trial, saying new evidence filed does not meet the necessary requirements. >> which is why we concluded in our informal response that the court should deny the current habeas petition by the menendez brothers. >> hochman says one is an undated copy of a letter reportedly sent by eric menendez to his cousin in 1988, discussing sexual abuse he

experienced perpetrated by his father. the second, a declaration by roy rossello, who says he was sexually abused by jose menendez, the father of eric and lyle menendez. hochman argues that those pieces of evidence are either not admissible, not credible, or that there was a substantial delay in bringing them forward. he also argued that the menendez brothers lied at different markers before, during, and after killing their parents, and also said that while sexual abuse may have been a motivation, it does not constitute self-defense. the family of eric and lyle menendez released a statement saying in part, he opened the wounds we have spent decades trying to heal. he didn't listen to us. we are profoundly disappointed by his remarks, in which he effectively tore up new evidence and discredited the trauma they experienced to suggest that years of abuse couldn't have led to the tragedy in 1989 is not only outrageous, but also dangerous. they also called on hochman to, quote, follow the law and issue a resentencing recommendation. >> so with respect to resentencing, we have not

finalized where we're going to end up, because it's not just the trial analysis. it requires an additional substantial analysis on the rehabilitation factors and other factors that are very unique to the resentencing statute. >> anabel munoz abc seven news. >> governor newsom's office issued a statement in response to the decision, saying he respects the role of the district attorney in ensuring justice is served. the governor will defer to the da's review and analysis of the menendez case prior to making any clemency decisions. end of statement from the governor. well, some good news about the environmental effects of the moss landing battery plant, fire, soil, sediment and water testing in santa cruz county show there are no elevated metal levels related to the fire. the county says there was also no sign of any public health or food safety concerns. the results are consistent with similar tests taken more than a week ago. >> a salinas high school math teacher was back on the job

today after students accused him of selling what he called test enhancing pills. apparently, he was put on leave while he was under investigation. parents found out from students, and one of them texted that the teacher claimed they needed to take 15 pills a week. when asked what was in the pills, the teacher apparently said it was a secret. the mother is outraged. >> to put that onto teenagers who are still learning, their brains are still developing, and you're normalizing drug use within a classroom in the middle of a fentanyl crisis. it's absurd. the lack of judgment, to me is astounding. >> now, it's unknown if any kids bought the pills. police are still investigating. the school conducted its own investigation, and the principal wrote in a message it, quote, found no findings. the nationwide shortage of ozempic and wegovy is over. the food and drug administration says the weight loss and diabetes drugs are no longer in short supply. increased demand led to a shortage since 2022. the drug maker novo nordisk says it is meeting or exceeding nationwide

demand. the company also warned about knockoff versions of the drugs when drugs were in short supply. certain pharmacies are permitted to fill the supply gaps. the fda says it does not plan to change this for 60 to 90 days, and the fda news triggered a reaction on wall street. hymns crashed and lost about 25% of its value, closing around $49. people turned to the website, making it a popular alternative because of the shortage. it offers a compounded version of a weight loss drug. >> republican assembly member bill azali says he's going to introduce a bill to create the california american freedmen affairs agency. an effort to create that agency failed last year, along with another reparations bill. the agency would have been responsible with implement for implementing reparations and determining eligibility. azali opposes cash payment for reparations and has said in the past he wants democrats to take a recorded vote on this issue. quick programing note for you the

at the tv. voila! there was the breaking news. the norcal native made 33 starts in each of the previous two seasons. last year finished with 172 strikeouts, but there's still plenty to build off of moving to the gridiron. reports indicate that former 40 niners assistant head coach brandon staley is heading to new orleans to be the saints defensive coordinator. his stint here in the bay brief just one season before the 40 niners, he was with la chargers, their head coach for three seasons. the saints new head coach kellen moore, who served as staley's offensive coordinator back in 2023. so the two are very familiar with one another. we got action coming back to the pitch. the san jose earthquakes kick off their season tomorrow against real salt lake city. there's a lot to be excited for because the quakes have the most winningest coach in north american history, bruce arena, taking the reins and the first year head coach has acquired some serious firepower to complement. we'll get our first live look tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. sports on abc
