material into the air. and students and staff of sf state university are pushing back against drastic cuts and tuition increases. the news at 430 starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> in the east bay. a deadly scene after an armed robbery suspect was shot by a convenience store employee. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. the suspect entered the store in concord and demanded an employee open the safe. and minutes later, things took a deadly turn. police say it all happened late last night on willow pass road, and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with a man who saw the suspect moments before the shooting. >> i'm scared when i see the guy, i'm scared. >> and vicencio says he was making a beer run to the sns fast and easy mart, about 1130 on friday night, when he spotted an armed man walking through the parking lot. >> i walked him from my house to

here and i see the guy walking uh- from that corner and he got the shotgun in his right hand. >> teo says he ran back to his house and called 911. concord police say the suspect, armed with a shotgun, entered the store and attempted to force an employee to open the store's safe. in a statement, police said another store employee hearing and seeing what was occurring intervened, firing his own weapon, which struck the suspect. the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. >> i hope the best for the employee. >> by saturday morning, customers like dustin heard about what happened. >> i mean, i think he was justified. i mean, it was, you know, his life or theirs, you know? he defended himself, in my opinion. >> store owner gary sharma says he's been robbed before. he says everyone involved is doing okay, and he appreciates support coming from the community. >> my customers are just coming in in tears. they're coming in and saying, we are so glad you

guys are okay. they came and gave us hugs. that means a lot. and i want to say love you to all my customers. love you to all everyone who been praying for us. >> concord police say detectives are reviewing evidence and the investigation is ongoing. in concord. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> happening now, a grassroots community group, is distributing free air purifiers to people who live near the martinez refinery. healthy martinez and 350 bay area are giving away 1000 air purifiers to neighboring residents in martinez and pacheco. all of it is in response to the february 1st refinery fire that forced residents to shelter in place. a report released by the contra costa health department shows the fire released cancer-causing toxins into the air. >> we want safe air to breathe, and we are. we don't trust the refinery. we wish that we had air monitors. positas and a

fence line data system that actually worked during a fire. but we don't. and so the least we can do is make sure that folks in the community have a working air purifier. >> the air purifiers are being given away at 600 palm avenue in martinez until 5 p.m, or until they run out. meantime, crews at the battery facility in moss landing are beginning, a process that will lower thek of fire reigniting. this afternoon, they started disconnecting the remaining lithium ion batteries at the site. that process is expected to take several weeks. the battery plant in monterey county first caught fire january 16th, forcing the evacuation of residents. a flare up earlier this week prompted alerts for the surrounding community to shut all windows and doors. well, just into the newsroom, we are following some breaking news coming out of san mateo county right now where police areunty investigating a reported shooting. this is near the hillsboro town hall and police station on floribunda avenue.

the call came in just before 4:00, where police and paramedics are on the scene, and there is a massive search in the area for a possible gunman. we are still gathering information and we will bring it to you as soon as we get it. well, moving on now. this weekend, csu faculty members from around the state are holding a conference at san francisco state university to defend higher education. organizers say they are strategizing ways to push back against csu cuts to faculty, staff and course offerings at sonoma state and dominguez hills. they say they're also worried about potential layoffs at sf state and other northern california campuses, as well as a proposal to raise tuition by more than 30% over the next few years. >> they've already let go over, like many like over 100, maybe 2 or 300 lecturer faculty, so almost none left. and now we might get layoffs as well. they might discontinue programs when they discontinue a program. that means they get rid of all the

faculty, whether you have tenure or not. >> the california faculty association conference is also planning a session for a march and rally in sacramento on april 17th. multiple school districts across the bay area will be moving forward with layoffs or school closures in the coming days. this, as they face multimillion dollar budget deficits. san francisco, fremont and hayward all proposing cuts to staff and programs. san francisco will vote on layoff notices on tuesday. the fremont school board will meet on wednesday and hayward's deadline is friday. the outcomes will impact hundreds of employees across the district. franklin mckinley in east san jose will finalize whether to close or consolidate five schools on tuesday. turning now to the trump administration's first 100 days. several senior military leaders have now been fired by president trump. as the pentagon prepares to lay off thousands of civilian workers. abc news reporter selina wang is following the

firings and reaction. >> in an unprecedented move, president trump firing the nation's top military leader, general c.q. brown, ousted from his position as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. several other senior leaders also fired, including lisa franchetti, the first woman to serve as the navy's top admiral. brown was nominated by trump in his first term, but has come under fire as trump aims to rid the military of leaders who support diversity and equity. as brown and some of the others who were fired have done, the president nominating dan kaine to be brown's replacement. a retired three star general who has never served in a four star position. all of this comes as the pentagon prepares to lay off 5400 civilian workers, beginning next week, in the first round of cuts that could total tens of thousands, as the pentagon aims to cut between 5 and 8% of its civilian workforce. layoffs also hitting the federal aviation administration. more than 100 probationary employees have been terminated, including those that

accessing americans personal data. doge, headed by billionaire elon musk, has been trying to access information from the us treasury department as part of the sweeping cuts to the government. yesterday, a judge issued a preliminary injunction. today, this statement from california attorney general rob bonta. californians can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the california department of justice is going to the mat for them and standing up against the trump administration's chilling overreach of power. earlier this month, bonta joined nearly 20his other attorneys general to file a lawsuit to block doge over privacy concerns. house minority leader hakeem jeffries urging bay area residents to not be discouraged. he spoke last night at a black history event month a month event, i should say, at the mlk freedom center in oakland. >> they want us to step back, but we're going to fight back. and. the one thing i'll say at the top, donald trump is not a

last night's official opening event, which was held at 21st amendment brewery. there are a variety of participating breweries and restaurants every day until march 2nd for sf beer week. wow. >> always some kind of an interesting festival going on in san francisco or around the bay area. >> indeed, it feels like it's festival season all the time these days. >> and spring is coming on, which means probably even more festivals. >> hopefully good weather for all the festivals. >> let's see if we can arrange that. here's a look at what's happening right now on the satellite radar composite image. there's a weak cold front that will be swinging through the north bay later tonight, overnight and into the early morning hours. it may produce some light rainfall in parts of the north bay, but it won't be an area wide event. right now we're looking at calm winds for the most part, although breezy and gusty over oakland with gusts up to 32mph. looking out over the city from sutro tower, 55 degrees here in san francisco right now. oakland 58. we have low to mid 60s at hayward, san jose and redwood city and 52 at half moon bay. looking down onto the city by the bay from

mount tam, 66 degrees at both santa rosa and napa. right now, only 55 at petaluma. we have mid to upper 60s at fairfield, concord and livermore. and now let's check out our forecast headlines next two days. we'll have bright skies, mild temperatures. although the morning hours may bring a few clouds middle of next week. spring like warmth will prevail. and then early march, which is next weekend. there are some chances of light rain, but before that happens, let's take a look at this overnight. we'll see clouds increase again. a chance of just some light sprinkles or light rainfall in the northernmost part of our viewing area from ukiah down to about cloverdale. then after that, the sprinkles move away. by midday tomorrow we'll have bright skies and mild conditions, but rainfall totals may reach 1 to 2 hundredths of an inch of rain. and those locations that actually receive rainfall. then overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 40. so it will be pretty mild overnight because the clouds will cloud cover, will keep the temperatures from dropping very low. highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, upper 60s to near 70 degrees right around the bay

shoreline. inland areas up in the north bay we'll see upper 60s inland. east bay will see 70 to 71 degrees down in the south bay. the mildest weather tomorrow. highs up to 74 degrees at san jose. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. a nice day tomorrow for the black joy parade in oakland. and as we move into the early part of next week, we'll see a mix of clouds and sun in the early morning hours, giving way to bright skies in the afternoon. but look at the middle of the week warming up again. wednesday we'll see high temperatures in the mid 70s, both around the bay shoreline and inland. >> and this time tomorrow andre iguodala is number nine will be hanging in the chase center rafters. the 2015 nba finals mvp is going to become the first player in this current dynasty to have his number retired. warriors host the mavericks tomorrow at 1230 right here on abc seven. could jimmy butler be the missing ingredient that leads the dubs to another title? butler going to make his home debut tomorrow afternoon. golden state is four and one since butler joined the lineup, the only loss during that stretch.
