and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. hillsborough police say the shooting happened in the rear parking lot. and the officer is expected to make a full recovery. this all happened just before 4 p.m. near floribunda avenue and el camino real. residents were told to stay inside as officers searched the neighborhood for the suspect. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn joins us live. she has been following this story for hours now. suzanne. so, dion, tonight. >> the road behind us is open again. we can tell you that we saw a huge presence of officers out here from about half a dozen different agencies. we saw canines, we saw swat teamw officers. we saw drones searching for the suspect. and tonight police tell us they're still looking for him. scores of officers were on scene in hillsborough saturday after a police officer was shot. we saw officers from burlingame, daly city, south san francisco, san mateo county sheriffs and more. >> they were just sirens blaring undercover and san mateo county

sheriff and hillsborough police. >> i was trying to go out to church, and it took me a while to get out of my garage. when we were in church, we could hear sirens going all the time. >> police say the shooting happened just before 4 p.m. near el camino real and floribunda avenue. according to hillsborough police, an officer was ambushed and struck by gunfire in the rear parking lot of the police department. the officer returned fire and the suspect took off. the officer, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, is expected to survive. police posted on social media and told residents in the area to shelter in place until further notice. they asked people to stay indoors and lock all the doors and windows. officers searched for hours. swat officers searched this church right by hillsborough town center, but there was no sign of the suspected shooter. law enforcement also used drones to help with the search. and tonight, we still don't know very much about the officer or the suspected shooter. and we

don't know why this shooting happened across the street there in that back parking lot. we do know from a press release from police that the officer did not know that shooter. that's the latest live here in hillsborough. suzanne. fawn, back to you. >> all right, suzanne, many thanks to you. now, moving on. in the east bay, an armed robbery suspect is dead after being shot by a convenience store employee. police say it happened late last night on willow pass road, when that suspect entered the store and demanded an employee open the safe. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with a man who saw the suspect moments before the shooting. >> i'm scared when i see that guy. i'm scared. >> and vicencio. >> says he was making. >> a beer run to the fast and easy mart about 1130 on friday night, when he spotted an armed man walking through the parking lot. >> i walked him from my house to here and i see the guy walking uh- from that corner and he got

the shotgun in his right hand. >> tao says he ran back to his house and called 9-1-1. concord police say the suspect, armed with a shotgun, entered the store and attempted to force an employee to open the store's safe. in a statement, police said another store employee hearing and seeing what was occurring intervened, firing his own weapon, which struck the suspect. the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. >> i hope the best for the employee. >> by saturday morning, customers like dustin heard about what happened. >> i mean, i think he was justified. i mean, it was, you know, his life or theirs, you know? he defended himself, in my opinion. >> store owner gary sharma says he's been robbed before. he says everyone involved is doing okay, and he appreciates support coming from the community. >> my customers are just coming in in tears. they're coming in and saying, we are so glad you guys are okay. they came and gave us hugs. that means a lot. and i want to say love you to

all my customers. love you to all everyone who been praying for us. >> concord police say detectives are reviewing evidence and the investigation is ongoing. in concord. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> today, csu faculty members from around the state held a conference at san francisco state university to defend higher education. organizers say they are strategizing ways to push back against csu cuts to faculty, staff and course offerings at sonoma state and dominguez hills. they say they're also worried about potential layoffs at sf state and other northern california campuses, as well as a proposal to raise tuition by more than 30% over the next few years. >> they've already let go of, like many like over 100, maybe 2 or 300 lecturer faculty. so almost none left. and now they we might get layoffs as well. they might discontinue programs when they discontinue a program. that means they get rid of all the faculty, whether you have tenure or not. >> the california faculty

association conference is also planning a session for a march and rally in sacramento on april 17th. multiple school districts across the bay area will be moving forward with layoffs or school closures in the coming days. all of this as they face multimillion dollar budget deficits. san francisco, fremont and hayward all proposed proposing cuts to staff and programs. san francisco will vote on layoff notices on tuesday. the fremont school board will meet on wednesday and hayward's deadline is friday. the outcomes will impact hundreds of employees across the district. franklin mckinley in east san jose will finalize whether to close or consolidate five schools on tuesday. the state of california is requesting $40 billion for wildfire recovey from the federal government. governor gavin newsom sent a letter yesterday to hakeem jeffries and house speaker mike johnson. former president joe biden had promised to cover the first 180 days of fire recovery in los angeles. however,

president trump has suggested federal aid should come with the condition the state change its environmental management policies. wildfires in the los angeles area last month burned more than 16,000 structures and killed at least 29 people. recovery is expected to take years. turning now to the weather, where it certainly feels like spring outside. the big question how long is it going to last? spencer is standing by with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. spencer. >> okay. dion. well, the temperatures have certainly been in a mild range. feeling like spring, but clouds are increasing tonight, as you can see on the satellite radar image. and some sprinkles may develop overnight, especially in the north bay. so here's our day planner for tomorrow. early tomorrow morning, 7:00. mostly cloudy skies, maybe a lingering sprinkle or two in the north bay. temperatures ranging from 48 inland to about 50 near the bay and on the coast. then by midday by noon, we'll see. partly cloudy. partly sunny skies. temperatures rising into the mid 60s near the bay and inland by 4 p.m. mostly sunny, 70 inland, 68 around

the bay shoreline and at 7:00 pm rolls around. it will start to get partly cloudy, mostly clear, around 60 degrees or so. even going into the evening hours. it will be mild tomorrow and there's much milder weather coming our way later in the forecast period. i'll have all that for you a little bit later in the newscast. >> dion i like the sound of it. spencer. thank you. we are following developing news with the pope tonight with the vatican saying he is in critical condition. he's been in the hospital for about a week now with ammonia and a complex lung infection. now, the vatican says an asthmatic respiratory crisis has developed. abc news medical experts say that suggests the 88 year-old is struggling to maintain sufficient oxygen levels when breathing on his own. the pope's doctors say the main threat he faces is the onset of sepsis, but there is no evidence that that has happened. one police officer is dead and five people are hurt. after a hostage situation at upmc memorial hospital in york

county, pennsylvania. police say that suspect entered the hospital with a semiautomatic handgun and zip ties saturday morning. he then went to the icu and held several staff hostage. that suspect left the icu holding a hospital worker at gunpoint. police then opened fire. both the suspect and officer andrew duarte were killed in the shooting. >> tonight we pray for this community and especially for the duarte family. a life cut short, but a life of service and meaning and purpose. >> police say the suspect shot a doctor, nurse and a custodian. two people. police officers were hospitalized. the hospital says no patients, though, were hurt. hamas is accusing israel of violating the cease fire agreement after they failed to release more than 600 palestinian hostages today. that is despite hamas releasing the final six israeli hostages as outlined for this phase of the

agreement. president trump commented on the release of the israelis. >> we had the hostages given back today. it's disgraceful what's going on there. they're not in great shape, but we've also seen them in worse shape. but the hostages, the six hostages were delivered by hamas. what a terrible situation it is. >> palestinian hostages include 445 men, one woman and 23 children, all seized without charges. the israeli government did not respond to questions about the delay. today in pleasanton, a fundraising festival and bazaar for gaza. leading up to the month of ramadan. the event is raising money to support the nonprofit third pillar charity. that group sends food and other supplies to families in gaza displaced by the bombings. the bazaar was organized by soul of my soul exhibit, a group that holds art

air purifiers to people who live near the martinez refinery. healthy martinez and 350 bay area gave away 1000 air purifiers to neighboring residents in martinez and pacheco. it's all in response to the february 1st refinery fire that forced residents to shelter in place. a report released by the contra costa health department shows that fire released cancer causing toxins into the air. >> we want safe air to breathe, and we are. we don't trust the refinery. we wish that we had air monitors and a fence line

data system that actually worked during a fire, but we don't. and so the least we can do is make sure that folks in the community have a working air purifier. >> lasko products donated all of the air purifiers. a san jose institution that has been keeping its shelves stocked full of eggs for more than 75 years, is closing up shop. oliveira egg ranch, in the city's berryessa neighborhood, is set to close on march 31st. now, when i reported on the family owned business back in 2023, a bird flu had rocked the nation, pushing egg prices up. but oliveira still sold 43,000 eggs a week. even today, we saw plenty of inventory and lots of customers coming to stock up. owner edward oliveira says the reason behind the closure is bittersweet. >> my son left to go to michigan about six years ago, and i'm now 76 years old, and i have nobody

to leave the business to. i don't feel good about it. it's been my whole life and my father's life there. he started the business and i continued with it. >> now, according to edward oliveira, there have been plans to sell the property for years. but those deals kept getting pushed back. the space will now be developed into housing. he told abc seven news he is grateful for all of the loyal customers throughout the years. house minority leader hakeem jeffries urging bay area residents not to be discouraged. he spoke last night at a black history month event at the mlk freedom center in oakland. >> they want us to step back, but we're going to fight back. and the one thing i'll say at the top, donald trump is not a king, and we will never bend the knee. >> jeffries says to expect a fight next over the budget, house republicans will try to

bring their budget plan to a vote next week. the senate adopted a blueprint yesterday where democrats say it would give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthy while cutting government programs. last night event was part of a lecture series hosted by oakland mayoral candidate and former congresswoman barbara lee and former oakland mayor elihu harris. we are just one day away from the eighth annual black joy parade in oakland. that parade is on sunday and is hosted by our very own abc seven team of julian glover and zach fuentes, as well as a community host, taylor crenshaw. taylor gave us a peek at what people can expect. >> the black joy parade does a really good job at getting the overview feel of how it feels to be black and to celebrate blackness, but also dives into those niche areas. so we're going to have a dance battle where people win $2,000. we got a gospel choir in the house, okay, we're going to have sororities, fraternities. it's

right now. >> turning now to the trump administration's first 100 days. several senior military leaders have now been fired by president trump. as the pentagon prepares to lay off thousands of civilian workers. abc news reporter selina wang is following the firings and reaction. in an. >> unprecedented move, president trump firing the nation's top military leader, general c.q. brown, ousted from his position as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. several other senior leaders also fired,

including lisa franchetti, the first woman to serve as the navy's top admiral. brown was nominated by trump in his first term, but has come under fire as trump aims to rid the military of leaders who support diversity and equity. as brown and some of the others who were fired have done, the president nominating dan kaine to be brown's replacement of retired three star general who has never served in a four star position. all of this comes as the pentagon prepares to lay off 5400 civilian workers, beginning next week, in the first round of cuts that could total tens of thousands, as the pentagon aims to cut between 5 and 8% of its civilian workforce. layoffs also hitting the federal aviation administration. more than 100 probationary employees have been terminated, including those that produce air traffic navigation maps. sources tell abc news. >> we want to make government smaller, more efficient. >> president trump insists these cuts are making the government more efficient. but voters across the country are pushing back. in a district near atlanta, voters confronting

advised his employees not to respond until receiving guidance from their immediate leadership. now, among the federal government cuts, the trump administration has fired about 1000 newly hired national park service employees. their roles include cleaning and maintaining parks and educating visitors. at least a dozen of those who lost their jobs worked at yosemite national park. >> people around here are pretty depressed. they're a little worried about what's going to happen when. how much further is it going to go? i mean this for all we know, this is just the first step. who knows what's going to happen. uh- the communities around you depend on the tourists. if they close the park, uh- businesses are going to close. >> the trump administration now plans to restore at least 50 jobs across the parks. the park service also said in a new memo it will hire more seasonal workers than normal. well, it is tax season and today people in fremont had the chance to get

see what we did there? the coffee chain announced they will no longer be charging extra for plant based milk options like oat and almond. that change goes into effect on march 5th. competitors like starbucks and tim hortons have already made that change. a recent class action lawsuit accused dunkin of discriminating against people with lactose intolerance. though the court sided with dunkin last may. well, bay area residents say they're getting billed hundreds of dollars from newark urgent care that was giving out free covid tests during the pandemic. the company says it's because insurance companies didn't fully reimburse the urgent care. now, the alameda county da's office has stepped in, and here's seven on your side's melanie woodrow with what she's uncovered. >> in november of 2020, john sheaffer says he took his family to afc urgent care of newark to be swabbed for covid tests. he says the urgent care advertised as free. he didn't think much of it until four years later, when the bills started coming. sheaffer didn't mind paying for the covid swabs, but didn't

understand why he was also being charged for seeing a doctor. >> we didn't see anyone who appeared to be a physician or ask us any questions about our health or symptoms. we simply stood in line and filled out a form and got swabbed and left. >> sheaffer wasn't alone. fremont residents joshua and van li also started getting bills years after their free swabs. >> $600 is a pretty hefty fee for doing a nose swab and sending it out for, you know, a sample. >> $900 for a cute, you know, a q-tip test. that's that's ridiculous. i feel like it's a scam. >> san jose resident kenneth chu wondered the same. >> i just thought something was a bit off. >> he retained an attorney and started a facebook page for bay area residents who say they were impacted. >> this is becoming a widespread issue. there's hundreds of people kind of going through what i'm going through. i just think it's unjust. i think it's unethical. >> to hire an attorney. christian schreiber. >> there were a lot of a lot of people who rushed in during the covid era to try to make money.

and i think this is a situation where a doctor did exactly that, tried to get money from insurers, failed, and now he's turned around and he's trying to get money from from his patients. >> i've always been service oriented, not money oriented. i have never worked for money in my life. >> afc urgent care of newark owner doctor parmjit singh says he's been receiving anonymous threats. >> watch your back. you will be shot. >> singh says he reported the threats to police, but couldn't file a police report because he didn't have an exact name of who was threatening him. a spokesperson with newark police department says the department has no record of doctor singh attempting to file a police report or for calls for service at afc urgent care of newark on its website and in billing letters. afc urgent care of newark told patients if they didn't pay, they could face action in small claims court. >> beyond this, i'm not sure what else we can do. >> afc urgent care of newark attorney michael gabriel says the company tried to sue insurance companies for the lack of reimbursements, but didn't have the legal standing to do so

under the cares act. >> congress, in its infinite wisdom and writing acts, didn't say who could sue to enforce the act. >> this is a recording of a proceeding in the ninth circuit court of appeals between solutions, inc, which was doing business as afc urgent care of newark, and aetna, with gabriel representing us. >> i never thought that there was an issue over being able to sue to enforce the payment. >> an attorney, emily costin, representing aetna. >> essentially, what the appellant is asking the court to do is to read into the statute something that congress did not write into the statute. >> and the court found that we couldn't sue to get it. >> gabriel says the company is out more than $30 million in unpaid claims. >> it's crazy. i mean, we send me a bill and we don't know if we're going to get anything or something or nothing. >> none of the major insurance companies responded to our requests for a statement on its website. previously wrote, we cannot sue the insurance companies directly for enforcement of the cares act.
