differently. >> plus, a wildfire risk overhaul for the bay area where it's getting worse, where it's getting better, and the homeowners with a lot of work to do. all tonight on abc seven news at 11. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> one month from now, the horses will all be gone from the alameda county fairgrounds, and many of the people who tend to them will be as well. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. financial problems are leading the group that runs horse racing at northern california county fairs to call it quits this summer. that's the latest blow to horse racing in the bay area. >> and no racing means no work for hundreds of people. and it may also mean no housing for the low income residents who call the fairgrounds home. tonight, people who live in rvs at the fairgrounds in pleasanton tell us they may be forced to move out. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with them about the uncertain month ahead. >> we have four weeks now to remove ourselves from the premises. >> timothy bellis has been a

horse trainer here at the alameda county fairgrounds for the last three decades. he showed me around on monday the horses he trains, which you see here, will have to be moved out by march 25th. last month, the california authority of racing fairs canceled all horse racing events. so no more horse racing at the alameda county fair. >> when we had the racing meet in october through december, the place had over 900 horses here, probably about 350 going down every day. >> but wagering dollars during that time were 50% lower than expected, according to officials. instead of two racing circuits across the state, there will now be one at racetracks in southern california, leaving horse trainers and helpers like nicholas hernandez, who worked at golden gate fields, then here in pleasanton. after that, heartbroken and without a job. hard, though, because you've you've done this for a long time. >> 45 years. wow. 45 years with

and won't be forced to uproot their families and take their kids out of school. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> police in oakland arrested a man who exchanged gunfire with officers twice this afternoon. started around 4:00, with neighbors reporting a man pointing a gun at people in the highland neighborhood. police say when officers tried to detain the man on 90th avenue near d street, he pointed his gun at them. that's when the shooting started, though police didn't say who shot first. the man ran off and officers found him again with shots fired a second time. officers arrested him and took him to the hospital with minor injuries. no officers were injured. now, this is the second officer-involved shooting in oakland in less than 24 hours. a housing authority police department officer ended up in the hospital after a gun battle with a man overnight. police say the officer was trying to pull a driver over near 85th and g street, and the driver opened fire. the driver is also in the hospital. >> an alleged drug dealer is due

in court tomorrow. believed to be responsible for the deaths of two north bay teenagers growing memorials in grief, counselors were on high school campuses in santa rosa today. on saturday, 16 year old gia walsh and her friend logan were found dead in a home on brookwood drive. police believe the teens thought they were taking cocaine. instead dying of a fentanyl overdose. jia's mother says she is in disbelief that. >> that was my egg. that was my blessing in life. and now she is gone forever. >> and she is a beautiful light and she will always be with me. forever. >> a man has been arrested, accused of selling the drugs to the teens who died. police are looking into whether that suspect is connected to another set of overdoses. the same day, two teenage girls were hospitalized and survived for a decade now. bay area cities have been trying to stop pedestrian deaths on our streets. san jose was one of the first to launch the vision zero effort.

tomorrow, city leaders will discuss how their approach is evolving. ten years in, and as abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us, there's still a lot of work to be done. >> the place where she works at is literally right here, and she normally will park over here if there's room. >> antoinette taylor is showing me the intersection where her grandmother was killed while crossing the street. it happened last month off kimball and sherlock drive in san jose. >> nobody was with her when she died in such a horrific way. >> 86 year-old florence taylor was hit around 630 in the morning on her way to work as a caregiver. her daughter, angela taylor payne, is still in shock. >> crazy to me that she's gone. >> san jose police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated. florence taylor's death marked the city's third traffic death of 2025. >> she had no shoes on. he hit her so hard he knocked her shoes off her feet. >> after what happened, a neighbor put up these signs urging drivers to slow down. the taylor family would like to see more signs and speed bumps. >> now we have to really, like,

see, look at them. >> on tuesday, the san jose city council will receive an update on the 2025 vision zero action plan. the plan sets a goal of reducing roadway deaths and injuries by 30% by 2030. in the presentation, it says nationwide traffic fatalities have steadily increased by 25% over the last ten years in san jose. fatalities increased at a slower pace, around 17% over the last ten years. the city is now working on plans to install dozens of speed cameras, plus new red light cameras, hoping it will make streets safer. >> now i understand what it feels like when you lose your mother. it's nothing like it. half of you just goes. part of you just leaves your body. >> florence taylor is described as a southern belle who was kind and loved to cook for those around her. the family started a gofundme to help with her unexpected funeral expenses. >> the last time she walked. the last time for everything for her was here. and that's not how

it's supposed to be. >> florence, known as mama to her grandchildren, will be laid to rest later this week in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> new at 11 cal fire is overhauling its wildfire risk maps for cities across the bay area. the new fire lines will mean major changes for homeowners. may be you. it's the first time in more than a decade that the agency has assessed fire danger in cities. the state says it's unlikely to change insurance companies coverage or rates, but it will mean work for homeowners. areas now considered very high risk will eventually have to clear out all flammable shrubbery, etc. wood fences from within five feet of their homes and follow other fire safety rules. the biggest changes are in sonoma county, where nearly 7600 acres are considered at risk, compared to just 11 acres in 2011. just look at the city of sonoma, now almost half covered in red. meantime, some of the red was removed from oakland's maps, with cal fire

downgrading parts of the oakland hills to high or moderate risk. local governments now have a few months to study the maps before they're finalized later this year. >> after a few sprinkles, we are in for a warmer workweek as we look live outside from san francisco. abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. >> yeah, my first thing tomorrow morning. this is what you're going to have to deal with. there is some dense fog out there from our golden gate bridge camera. it is a murky view. visibility down to a quarter mile in santa rosa. four miles in half moon bay. so definitely give yourself a little extra time for the commute. novato is just over a mile. looking at your 24 hour planner. dense fog in the morning, temperatures in the 40s. as we head towards the noontime hour, the sun shining. it is going to be a bright and mild day, with 6070 clear and cooler later on in the evening. i do have rain chances in the forecast. i'll tell you all about it. coming right up, dan. >> all right. thanks very much. a sacramento sikh temple and

multiple bay area baptist churches are protected from immigration enforcement, at least for the time being. they sued to stop president trump's executive order allowing migrant arrests inside houses of worship. a federal judge is temporarily blocking the policy, but only for the religious groups behind the lawsuit. for decades, the federal government has chosen not to enforce immigration laws in protected areas like houses of worship. president trump ended that policy his first day in office, saying field agents should use common sense and discretion. >> the u.s. supreme court will not weigh in on two high profile cases out of the south bay. a 1992 cold case and a deadly police shooting. city of san jose had appealed a verdict that found one of its officers liable in the killing of jacob dominguez. the city had argued sergeant mike pena should be protected from liability in the 2017 shooting. dominguez's family will be awarded $1 million over his death. the supreme court also declined to review the case of john kevin

woodward. he is facing a third murder charge in connection with the strangling of lori houts in mountain view more than 30 years ago. woodward went to trial twice in the years after the killing. both cases ended with hung juries. in 2022, the santa clara da charged him again based on new dna evidence. woodward argued he shouldn't be charged because of double jeopardy. the supreme court says a state court should decide. >> we're following the story tonight as crews begin cleaning up from the fire at the vistra energy storage facility in moss landing. over the weekend, they started disconnecting the remaining lithium ion batteries at the site, trying to prevent the fire from flaring up again. neighbors are worried about what's next for the tons of toxic debris still sitting at the battery plant. monterey county leaders say it can't go to local landfills. >> from vistra is going to have to find a location that fits this. and we do not have those type of landfills here because this is really a specialized,

white house. >> the white. >> on the third anniversary of the war in ukraine, president trump says he believes the war could be over soon. >> i think we could end it within weeks. if we're smart, if we're not smart, it will keep going and we'll keep losing young, beautiful people. >> trump and french president emmanuel macron meeting today in the oval office. macron trying to convince trump not to abandon ukraine after a seismic shift in u.s. support. >> after speaking with president trump, i am fully believe that there is a path forward. we share the same beliefs, we know what work needs to be done, and in the weeks to come, we will work on that. our teams will come together. >> this as the u.s. continues to push for access to revenue from ukraine's natural resources. the money is intended to pay back the u.s. investment in the war. trump today saying a deal is close to being sealed.

>> i will be meeting with president zelenskyy. in fact, he may come in this week or next week to sign the agreement. >> zelenskyy in kyiv today hosted world leaders for the third anniversary of the wide scale invasion. over the weekend. zelenskyy said he is willing to give up the presidency if it means peace in ukraine. this as russia is now occupying one fifth of all ukrainian territory, hundreds and thousands thought to have been killed, millions forced from their homes. in an interview today, putin says he hasn't substantially discussed the resolution of the ukrainian conflict with president trump. zohreen shah, abc news. >> listen to this. thieves are getting away with the new nike sneakers by targeting freight trains in the deserts of california and arizona. federal prosecutors say thieves have stolen more than $2 million worth of the exclusive shoes, some that haven't even hit store shelves yet. investigators count at least ten heists since last march. in some of the cases, the

suspects snuck onto the trains, cut air hoses, and stole the merchandise while the train was stopped. 11 people were charged in connection to one of the heists. last month. >> a federal jury convicted a former stanford researcher of illegally altering breast cancer study data after she was fired. 66 year old naheed manji was a clinical research coordinator assigned to a study on breast cancer treatments back in 2013. prosecutors say she was so angry about her firing, she replaced patient data with fake information and insults about her boss. stanford later corrected the patient information. manji was found guilty on two counts, facing up to ten years in prison for each. >> the people who look out for the. uc berkeley famous falcon say they're missing. and there may be a few reasons why. the cal falcons group says annie and archie haven't been seen on the live cameras at the campanile since early january. the group says they could just be hunting

in a new spot, but they are also concerned bird flu could have kept them away. a typically a first egg is laid in mid march, so fingers are crossed for their return. >> the infamous failed music event fyre festival is trying to make a comeback. billy mcfarland served nearly four years for wire fraud for the original fyre festival, selling a luxury experience in the bahamas that did not exist. he is also behind this new event, which is being advertised as fyre festival two. tickets went on sale today starting at $1,400. the event will supposedly take place in mexico from may 30th to june 2nd. >> we'll keep an eye on that. well, we're counting down to hollywood's biggest night right here on abc seven. less than a week until the oscars, featuring first time host conan o'brien with the help of some disney magic, visitors at the disneyland resort are having their oscar moment. a disney california adventure is getting in on the oscars fun with a special photo op in the park's hollywood land area.

you some live pictures right now. you will notice it is really kind of a gray view. we do have some drizzle in spots. so as you do head out the door tomorrow morning. give yourself that extra time because fog is reducing visibility just over a mile. petaluma novato quarter mile. it is pretty dense in santa rosa. three miles in half moon bay. taking a look at live doppler seven, we have the drizzle. we have the fog. wider perspective. that's kind of how the day started as a front came through here. still seeing some snow showers and rain showers up along the northern california area, but the main energy with this system has been focused on the pacific northwest, and atmospheric river has been soaking the area. high pressure now is going to take control of our weather, and as it continues to push closer to us, we're going to notice temperatures going up. just in case you want to go and enjoy the beach while the weather gets nicer, keep in mind that the waves are building. they're currently 9 to 12ft between bodega bay and point arena beach. hazards

statement tomorrow morning until wednesday morning. breakers 15 to 18ft, bringing a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. so just kind of be careful if you are at the coast. 40 and 50 on your temperatures right now. live view from san jose where it is cloudy overnight tonight. areas of dense fog. next few days. sunny spring like above average temperatures. and this weekend we do have a chance of rain, but i don't think it's going to be a washout. so we go hour by hour tomorrow morning, 4050. there will be fog around, but quickly by noontime clearing out and the temperatures respond as we head into the afternoon. we'll be seeing a lot of 60 on the board, with a few low 70 sprinkled in temperatures first thing in the morning, 30s to the 50s. once again, give yourself that extra time for the morning commute. you'll need it because of reduced visibility and fog. tomorrow afternoon, enjoy the sun. low to upper 60s for your temperatures. i mean, you're going to be getting close to 70 degrees in santa rosa and san jose, well above average for this time of year, and you will see some 70 by wednesday. that will be one of our warmest days with mid 70s, and then thursday
