>> michael: elon musk doubling down with the federal workers to explain what they did last week or face termination. our senior political correspondent, rachel scott, on the mixed messages sent to employees. good morning, rachel. >> michael, good morning, mixed messages to say the least. whiplash for federal workers and the president and elon musk said the workers who did not respond to that email listing accomplishments would be fired or semifired. but then the president's own administration directly contradicted him. all of this raising questions about which guidance federal employees should be listening to. >> this morning, federal workers in limbo after confusing and contradictory guidance about the ultimatum and midnight deadline from elon saying employees must respond to any email of what they did last week or lose their job. the president called that idea

jamie has, saint those who didn't answer would be semifired or fired. by asking the question, tell us what you did this week, what he is doing is saying, are you actually working? if you don't answer, like, you are semifired or fired. >> just as the president weighed in, the administration gave conflicting information. the office of personnel said at the request was voluntary and that workers don't have to respond. the fbi, pentagon, and justice department told the workers to hold off. the department of health and human services sent competing messages telling them to respond to the email in six hours and later not to respond. finally telling workers they can respond if they want to but warning they should assume what they write will be read by maligned foreign actors. and tailor your response accordingly. six other agencies including treasury department telling employees it is required. >> i have no employee saying, what did you do last week? if you can't come up with five things you did, maybe you shouldn't be employed here.

overnight, elon musk not backing down, posting on social media, they can expect that email to go out again, writing, "failure to respond a second time will result in termination." elon and donald trump are flooding the zone in part to create distress, create a sense invincibility and inevitability. >> the trump administration pushing forward to cuts to the federal workforce. the department of veteran affairs letting go of 1,400 probationary employees overnight. some of the efforts from musk and department of government efficiency sparking backlash. of monitors at the department housing and urban development with fake image of musk and trump, "long live the real king." of calling it an abuse taxpayer resources planning to investigate and other parts of the country showing up at town hall. this was a line at belton, missouri, where republican congressman mark alford inside, tensions high. >> elon musk has contracts with the federal government.

good morning, gio. this was scary for a lot of passengers and some covering faces evacuating the plane through those slides, even ending up on the wing. >> this morning, we are hearing from passengers on the delta flight from atlanta to south carolina where the smoke filled the cabin mid flight. >> are you returning to the airport? what we saw was fear. >> we noticed he was coming in gradually and all of a sudden, like, it filled up. you couldn't hardly breathe. >> the aircraft carrying 100 passengers and crew made an emergency landing. >> we have smoke in the cabin and we need to return back. >> the flight turning back around to atlanta. passengers forced to evacuate on emergency slides onto the runway. >> we had to evacuate off of the plane. it was smoky. it was the scariest thing i ever encountered. >> some ended up on the plane's wings. >> i'm stuck.

>> how am i going to get off at this plane? >> we kept saying, how are we going to get down? we had to go back in the plane and endure more smoke and then go to the other exit and fly down the chute. over the weekend, another delta planed forced to land lax because of the smoke in the cabin. as for the latest incident, delta said the flight crew followed procedures. >> the faa is trying to figure out where the smoke came from. we looked at the data and we see it happens 1,500 times of the year for various regions from engine issues to bird strike sometimes and of an issue in the gallery or even passenger cell phone or external battery. no matter the reason, it is scary. everyday it is scary. >> job security. >> michael: no doubt, we appreciate you. we will now go to the latest on pope francis and the vatican said the pontiff in critical condition but showing slight improvement. marcus moore in vatican city with more. good morning, marcus.

now to starbucks laying off more than a thousand employees and a dozen drinks. rebecca jarvis is here with a favorite drink that could still be on the menu? >> sure, a lot of people are wondering about this, nice to see you. it is 1,100 workers that will be laid off in corporate roles as the company remanufactures and it will not affect baristas the people in the cafes and the change is part of larger overhaul. the coffee giant. remember, i shared this with you when i sat down next sat down with the ceo in december with slumping sales and customer complaints from wait times to the cost of drinks. starbucks is cutting about 30% of its menu. now for the 13 drinks they are getting rid of by march 4th. they include the highest lemonade, nine frappuccino drinks including caffe vanilla, java chip, the caramel ribbon crunch, double chocolatey

>> michael: say it ain't so. >> and the white hot chocolate. starbucks is out with a list of substitution so you can substitute the drinks but the drinks are similar here. that is something to keep in mind. there are a lot of drinks on the list that you can find something else on the menu. >> robin: they are popular drinks as well. >> they can be coached up of actually, what the ceo told me is a lot of these drinks only get ordered once or twice in these locations, which is why they are doing away with it and you will have something else. >> robin: once or twice. >> he also said he was aware of that and hopes they will find a substitute. >> robin: what did they mean by cutting things off at the menu? people who work at starbucks have peace of mind because when you have so many things on the menu and you have to go make all of these different drinks, that is one of the issues and the other is time. you as a customer get your drink faster if they are making fewer of them. they want to make faster drinks within 4 minutes and coffees in 30 seconds. >> robin: that makes sense. how about the coffee bean prices? does that mean the prices will go up?

computing on the world cup circuit from september until march. with injury this season, i was actually home and i had an entry last season, too, on my ankle and knee that kept me out for a couple of months. this season i was home for a period of time doing rehab and trying to get the muscle function of my oblique back moving. this whole time, i had it my mind if i can just get back to skiing, what is going to be okay again and everything will be okay again. it will be fun and i will be able to move past this horrific process. then, we got back to skiing and got back to racing. i have honestly been struggling with this sort of ptsd, i guess you can call it fear, but it's not the sort of cognitive awareness that they are. -- of fear. my body is aware of the risk while my mind says go, my body

winter foundation? >> thank you for asking. i'm really excited about this. sort of knowing that if i had to assess this year, it was possible to get 100. it sparked this conversation with my team and myself to say, what can we do that is better and bigger and more meaningful than a number and kind of a record in a sport that we don't really get to share that much with the world. ski racing is this sort of niche sort of sport and a lot of people out there making a lot of youth that is really denied access to it. so share winter works to help get more youth in the u.s. and kind of access to sports and winter sports in the mountains than otherwise wouldn't have. this collaboration is to raise $100,000 for share winter to help in this goal, this dream sharing winter with more people and more youth that would be

[laughs] she has a new book out this morning called, "i'll have what she's having." >> robin: i love that. chelsea, thank you for being here. the question is, what is chelsea having right now? >> lots of treats. lots of different treats. i am having a great time. i am filled with optimism and positivity. that is what this book is about. optimism and positivity during certain times. -- uncertain times and to instill in women that type of energy togetherness and sisterhood and remind us all that we are stronger together, you know? to get after the life that you want for yourself. >> michael: i love that message and you are much more vulnerable in this book. of then you have been -- >> thank you i was hoping you would say this to me. >> michael: of course! [laughs] what made you want to write a book compared to what you have done before? >> i am in a different phase in

my life. i have been to therapy and the gift of self awareness. i'm softer, gentler, more compassionate person. i wanted to share with everybody how i feel about life and how i feel about sharing my life with others. and kind of instill in everyone the confidence that i wish every young girl had, you know, like believe in yourself and find out who you are and don't be apologetic about making nontraditional decisions in your life. >> robin: you are filled with gratitude at this point in your life. i want to read a passage that stuck out to me. "it is so important to show up for people in need and to take some money in and realize they are struggling and inconvenient yourself and you can save another person's day." who did that for you? who did that for you? >> so many people have done that for me. jane fonda did that for me there's a story in the book about jane fonda.

she called me to my house to have a conversation about my bad behavior. it was very scary because it was jane fonda and me. i did behave badly. she called me out on it. but in that moment as mortifying as that was and as embarrassing as it was, it was sisterhood. she showed me and gave me a model of what a real sister does, which takes the time out for another person and have a difficult conversation. after that conversation, i decided i wanted to live my life that way. i wanted to be just like that so anyone who came to me with the truth would get it. i would be someone who didn't shy away from difficult conversations. >> george: did you know it was coming? you know, it was a phase where a lot of stuff is coming. [laughter] it was not that much of a surprise but always a little bit of a surprise. to this day, we are great friends. i don't think there is a person i admire more than jane fonda. i am grateful for the

conversation because it did change my life. >> george: you also have a new comedy session, your fourth, coming out on netflix, "the feeling." >> it is probably not a subject for morning television. but the special takes you back to my childhood because i was born this way. my personality i was frustrated from the word go. i felt like, i remember coming home from the hospital and i do remember this looking around and seeing five other children and only god, who are all these people? there are five other kids here? [laughs] it starts out with my childhood. then i go into some, you know, life stories. i think when we are kids, the essence of who we are is really who we are. we are under besmirched by the world, and we haven't had our heartbroken or the world treated us badly. this book is a guide to checking with your young self and maintain the truth to who you you are and to remember who you are. and then i take you through stories.

>> robin: we are back with lieutenant colonel alexander with a new book "the folly of realism" how russia invaded ukraine. welcome back, of course, we are back on the third day after the third anniversary of russia's invasion of ukraine. you served on the national registry of president trump and his first term and you testified during his impeachment savings over his pressuring of ukraine. i just want to get first your reaction yesterday when you wake up and say the united states voting with russia, belarus, north korea against ukraine and european allies and the united nations? >> if you take it out of context as if you are watching a movie, this has got to be manchurian candidate. how is it somebody so far leaning into the enemies and complete reversal of our roles forget about our allies, nato, the europeans and ukraine supported for three years complete reversal bending over backwards to accommodate putin

and russia, for what reason? >> robin: how do you explain it? >> it is hard to explain. first of all, i don't believe in conspiracy and it is a leaky sieve we have and it's hard to keep a secret like that. i don't buy into the back compromising material on him, but you do have to wonder why trump is leaning so heavily towards russia. some of that is trump looking to snob all of the naysayers and everybody that said, no, you can't have a relationship with russia. but there might be something else highly transactional. this is second term and work with "little miss innocent freed" the first time and didn't manage to accomplish a lot. and convinces them this is the opportunity to reset relations and can win that this round. >> robin: this is not only professional for you but personal. you were born in ukraine. what do you say to americans who say we have been supporting ukraine a long time, it is three years, why should we care? we have been supporting ukraine longer than that though

inadequately. we needed that relationship in the early '90s and arsenal 4,000 weapons. we convinced to get rid of them and said we will be there for them if they ever get attacked. that didn't happen. there were multiple steps where we didn't live up to our own obligations we set for ourselves. right now, ukraine is holding the line. they are defending europe. europe is important to us because the largest trading partner and a core of our alliance. if ukraine crumbles or russia advances, europe is on the chopping block. the u.s. is under threat. it is absolutely essential not only putin lose, but also authoritarian leaders like xi, the leader of china, get the message that military in russia does not pay off. we cannot break at this point. if we do, it really sets up a

pattern of much, much more aggressive adversaries. >> robin: president zelenskyy is in a very, very tough spot being called a dictator by the united states president. making all sorts of demands for the natural resources of ukraine. how should we respond? >> i think that fact ukrainians will bend over backwards to try to accommodate to see if a deal can be made. there are things that can be worked out. this resource deal can be mutually beneficial. it can't be extortion and say give me half of trillions of dollars of minerals. but if the u.s. is investing, that is important to ukraine. it is a reason, another hook why the relationship should be reserved. we want values and democracy that defense against authoritarianism. that you also need interest, which is the economic component. >> robin: how should this war end? and how should it end? >> i served in the u.s. military for 22 years and sat in kyiv and embassy, moscow embassy and wrote the strategy in the pentagon and ended up in the

white house where i became a public figure when i reported donald trump's crushing resulting in the first impeachment. to me, what trump is doing is exact opposite that brings us to peace. it is capitulating, giving in, to putin even before negotiations start. the next step, putin will look for more. and i don't know how much more we can give away whereas ukraine is maximizing. what we need to do is continue to pressure russia. they are the ones that need to go to the table ready to compromise. we are far from that at this moment. >> robin: thank you for coming in today.
