>> back with my interview with u.s. open winner gary woodland. who went from being at top of his game to waking up in middle of the night shaking with tremors and scary symptoms, which led to his discovery of a brain tumor. he had the opportunity to surprise him with very special news. golfer gary woodland has been a main stay on the pga tour for 17 years. winning the u.s. open in 2019. but today the 40-year-old is celebrating his biggest win yet. >> go back to 2023, feeling strange symptoms. >> i start not feeling well, bad tremors, hands shaking, wake up in middle of the night shaking

with fear and anxiety. >> a doctor ordered mri, which revealed a leeson on the brain. >> it was on the amygdala. i had seizures. >> you continued to play, how was that possible? >> i wasn't going to sit home, i was going to play through it. it got to where i couldn't play. i wouldn't remember what hole i'm on, what club i'm hitting. >> september 2023, he underwent brain surgery to remove the lesion. >> it was benign, they got the part causing me to have a seizure. >> you said last year was hardest year of your life, what made it is so hard? >> seeing impact it had on my family, jax is seven and twin girls five and kids are full and energy and life. they got excited, my brain would shut down and i had to leave the room. >> no shrieking.

>> daddy's head. >> that killed me more than this lesion, in my head, if i can't be there for my kids, there is nothing else. >> is that first time you felt not in control? >> that was so scary, if something is off in my game, i go to my coach and put a game plan together. i did not know how to rehab my brain. every symptom or twitch, is it coming back or growing? >> now, gary woodland is back in the swing of things with new mindset and new game plan. >> i'm doing breath work to slow stimulation down in my brain, doing yoga, meditation, chanting to target part of the brain where the lesion sits to build a buffer to allow me to live my life. >> how do you feel about your game in 2025? >> i'm as optimistic since winning the u.s. open. my wife told me it is first time

she's seen in me in a year and a half. it is exciting. >> another reason to celebrate. gary has no idea he's been named pga tour courage award and i got to surprise him. >> pga tour courage award, represents player who courage has overcome extraordinary adversity to made significant and meaningful contribution to the game of golf. i have to say, pga tour courage award is what you represent. congratulations because you have won that award, gary. and i'm honored to be able to tell you that right now. here you go. that is for you. well-deserved. how do you feel about that? >> it's a lot to take in. i've had a lot of people around me that helped me get through this. definitely wouldn't be able to be here today, wouldn't be able to receive this or anything if it wasn't for them.
