>> yeah, we'll turn to drew. yesterday was beautiful.rew. >> and today is a little bit warmer, believe it or not. so it's going to be another nice afternoon out there. here's a live view from our exploratorium camera. we have clear skies out there. expect another day filled with sunshine. current sky conditions were clear across the board, so it's another day where we'll see a lot of sunshine out there. yesterday we made it into the 70s today. i think some areas have a chance of hitting 80 degrees. we do have a bit of a mixed bag of temperatures in our sheltered valleys like sonoma. we're cool at 39, but around the bay shoreline we're mainly in the 40s and in the 50s right now, 55 in the city, 56 in san rafael. so it doesn't feel too chilly in many areas this morning. but future weather, just like yesterday, we are going to warm up pretty quickly. so 60s and 70s already by 1130. and then this afternoon, not only into the 70s, but it looks like parts of the south bay will be going into the low 80s later on this afternoon for the first time this year, believe it or not. so we're going for 80 in san jose today under mostly

sunny skies, warm in the city again, 7275 in oakland, 77 in santa rosa and along the coast. it's a nice day, low and mid 70s from half moon bay to santa cruz. let's check in with gloria. >> it's going. beautiful day drew. well, looking pretty good out there on the roads this morning as well. this is a look at our map. and you can see mostly green. we do have a little bit of slow down in the altamont pass as is common this time of the morning. we're getting a live look at our san jose 11 8-80 camera there, and you can see it is pretty smooth sailing in both directions of 101 as folks head into the san francisco direction. no delays heading towards the peninsula and looking live at our emeryville camera. the commute there definitely under way. the drive time from highway four to san francisco. 26 minutes is still flowing pretty nicely right now. reggie. >> thanks, gloria. in the east bay, a financial crisis is forcing another school district to make major cuts. last night, oakland unified board voted 6 to 1 to issue layoffs and eliminate positions. abc seven news reporter lena howland here in the studio with the impact on

school campuses. >> well, reggie, last night we watched as the oakland unified school board voted 6 to 1 to issue layoffs. they plan to eliminate about 100 full time positions. this comes as ousd needs to cut $95 million from next year's budget. it faces declining enrollment and increasing operational costs. before the vote, the board heard from concerned teachers, parents and staff pleading with them to avoid these cuts. >> through any of the school board members that voted for cuts and layoffs today. it is shameful. our school is facing 19 positions being cut. we have a kindergarten through fifth grade program that is not. we need a teacher for each grade. we do not want to be under resourced in the oakland schools in a shameful and unacceptable manner. we need to chop from the top. >> some board members said they didn't want to approve any layoffs, but felt as though their backs were against the wall without any other options.

by state law, preliminary layoff notices for the next school year need to go out by march 15th. and just like we've seen in other districts like san francisco unified by about mid-may, a final round of layoff notices will go out to confirmff that the layoff holds or is being rescinded. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. and this morning, we are tracking a health concern that has plenty of parents across the country on alert. the measles outbreak that has been spreading is now deadly. and gloria is at the live desk with the warning from health experts. gloria. >> good morning. doctors are underscoring how important it is to get your children vaccinated because this is a preventable disease. there has been one case of the measles in california so far this year, but in west texas, there have been more than 100. the outbreak has been spreading among rural mennonite communities. a majority of those patients are under 18 and unvaccinated, including the child that died. doctors warn that we will continue to see measles cases spread

across the country, because vaccination rates have declined considerably since the pandemic. now, despite e warning from the medical community, health secretary robert kennedy jr insists this is not unusual. >> we're going to continue to follow it. it's incidentally, there have been four measles outbreaks this year in this country. last year there were 16. so it's not unusual. we have measles outbreaks every year. >> while measles outbreaks may not be unusual, what is unusual is someone dying from the sickness. this is the first time in a decade that there's been a death from the measles. health experts say that the vaccine provides lifelong protection and can prevent deaths, and it's a booster for extra protection. but you should check with your doctor first. >> a key fda meeting that was supposed to discuss next season's flu vaccine has been canceled without explanation. multiple sources tell abc news some experts are concerned the cancellation may delay the rollout of the vaccine this

fall. the annual meeting with the fda's outside advisers was scheduled for march 13th. advisory committee members received a cancellation email yesterday. it typically takes six months for vaccine manufacturers to prep flu vaccines before the season peaks. the military is planning to start firing transgender service members within 30 days, with few exceptions. the policy was revealed as part of a lawsuit challenging president trump's order banning trans people from military service. a person could qualify for an exemption if their skill set directly benefits war fighting efforts. however, they would not be allowed to receive gender affirming care or use the proper pronouns. >> tomorrow, ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky will be meeting with president trump in washington, d.c. ukrainian officials say they have reached a framework agreement on a deal to give the u.s. access to ukraine's deposits of rare earth minerals. details are still

being finalized, but the agreement does not include explicit military support for ukraine. at his cabinet meeting yesterday, trump said having american workers in ukraine would provide automatic protection for the country. president trump is defending his administration's effort to drastically reduce the size of the federal workforce. abc news reporter nicole d'antonio reports. more cuts are being planned for the future. >> this morning, president trump continuing his efforts to dramatically downsize the federal workforce. a new memo directs federal agencies to promptly prepare for large scale reductions in staff, and to submit those plans by march 13th. >> we've had tremendous success. >> the president defended the cuts during his first cabinet meeting, where he also defended his point man on reductions, billionaire elon musk. >> so i'm going to ask if it's possible to have elon get up first and talk about doge, because it seems to be of great interest to everyone. >> the overall goal here with the doge team is to help address

the enormous deficit we simply cannot sustain as a country, a $2 trillion deficit. >> some of the cuts include a staggering 65% of the environmental protection agency's workforce. musk also defended his recent email, where he demanded federal workers list out their recent accomplishments or risk being fired. >> i think that email perhaps was misinterpreted as a performance review, but actually it was a pulse check review. do you have a pulse? >> the white house now says more than 1 million employees have responded, roughly half of all federal workers. on the campaign trail, trump promised that doge would cut 2 trillion in spending. but now he's walked back that goal to 1 trillion in cuts. and for the first time, the supreme court is getting involved in at least one of the cases regarding federal funds. at issue, nearly $2 billion in foreign aid payments the administration has frozen. a lower court judge ordered the government to unfreeze those payments by midnight last night. critics say the freeze in funding for past

award winning actor gene hackman and his wife were found dead in their home in santa fe, new mexico. no details on the cause of death have been released, but authorities do not suspect foul play. hackman was well known for his roles as lex luthor in superman the french connection and unforgiven. hackman was 95. his wife was 64. santa fe authorities say they will be giving more information later today. >> to. la la la la la la la la la la. >> happening today, thousands of uc health care workers will be

back on the picket line for a second day of a strike. two unions representing uc service and patient care workers are demonstrating at all ten uc campuses and uc medical facilities. nearly 10,000 workers are on the picket lines at ucsf campuses. union members say they have been dealing with a staffing crisis. they're also demanding annual across the board wage increases. >> we want to take care of our patients. we want to get back in the labs. we want to take care of the students. but we can't do that until they come and come back to the table. address the crisis, provide us the data that we've requested, and stop trying to put barriers in our way. >> uc officials say they have offered each union a meaningful wage increases, as well as health care premium reductions. ucsf health says it intends to continue regular operations,to including emergency care, during the strike. >> stanford is implementing a hiring freeze because of uncertainty with its budget. a post from the school's president

and provost cites the trump administration's proposed reduction in payments from the national institutes of health for research, as well as a possible increase in the endowment tax. stanford's endowment helps pay for everything from salaries to financial aid to research. the phrase does not impact faculty positions or student workers on the peninsula. notre dame de namur. president says the university is searching for a new buyer for the 46 acre campus in belmont. stanford is backing out of purchasing the land after exploring possible uses for the historic catholic university's campus. stanford entered into an agreement with endnu in september 2021, giving stanford the option to purchase the property through june of this year. and this week, the university backed out, citing financial challenges and an extended timeline to convert the campus. >> a celebration in the south bay embracing a solution to downtown problems. last night, san jose swapped car traffic for foot traffic on one busy block.

>> and the city is establishing a permanent pedestrian mall on part of post street in downtown. the city sees a whole lot of promise. this comes a little more than a year since nearby san pedro square closed to cars, which the city says has boosted business and helped speed up pandemic recovery downtown. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us the block party with a bigger purpose. >> we. >> one block of post street in downtown san jose, is officially closed off to cars, but open to welcoming more people. on wednesday evening, officials celebrated the city council's vote to create downtown's second pedestrian mall. >> we've sometimes been overshadowed by our smaller neighbor to the north when it comes to nightlife and activation, but the area of san jose being the less cool cousin to the south is over. >> post street is a hidden gem that's starting to sparkle more with new businesses. >> been here for three, but we

did some remodeling. used to be a taqueria and so we came in and we just completely renovated everything. >> jorge gonzalez owns the restaurant called the club on post street. this closure allows him to build outdoor seating. >> so when we heard the news, we were like, right away, my mind was just like, what are we doing? how are we going to make how are we going to like, capitalize on this and to make it just more approachable from the from the outside to the streets? >> yeah. the hope is poetry can be a public space for more entertainment and gatherings like san pedro square, which became a permanent pedestrian only walkway in january of last year with the super bowl, march madness and world cup matches slated for the south bay in the next year. i asked. >> are you gearing up for it or. >> oh yeah, absolutely. we have a couple of other business owners that we all get together once a month, and we try to bounce around to different restaurants to support them, one and then two to get ideas going. >> across the street is velvet house, a women's boutique owned by dana gonzalez, george's wife. >> to be born. >> and raised in the city and not have one but two businesses. here is just a dream come true for us.

>> in recent years, post street has been known to be the city's lgbtq plus district. community leaders plan to continue making it a welcoming space for all. >> we have great visions and i promise you, in the coming years ahead, this will be a delightful, exciting, vibrant, colorful, clean place that everybody will want to come to. >> again. >> in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> now let's go to san francisco, where an old idea to help revitalize the downtown is coming back around, transforming the san francisco center mall into a stadium. according to the examiner, the idea resurfaced during yesterday's city beat breakfast. sf chamber of commerce president and ceo robert fong reportedly said he envisions a hub for sports concerts and a more diverse, mixed use downtown area. the idea for a stadium in the mall was first floated by former mayor london breed back in 2023. that same year, the chamber even

commissioned a rendering of what it could look like. >> a famous oakland barbecue spot is coming to san francisco. everett and jones will be opening a restaurant at fisherman's wharf, agreeing to a ten year lease. it will be taking over what used to be lou's fish shack, which closed in 2020. the goal is to open up sometime this fall. abc seven is getting an idea of what will be on the menu. >> we'll have our traditional everett and jones dishes, which is the ribs, the links, the brisket and the chicken, and along with our sides. but we're going to be adding some seafood options, which we're thinking about gumbo and po'boy sandwiches, grilled oysters. >> yum. everett and jones first opened in oakland in 1973. they used to be a location in san francisco, but it closed after it was heavily damaged in the 1989 earthquake. now to a story we've been following for almost

two years. all the repairs from the storm damage at stern grove in san francisco back in march 2023, several trees came down. one of them landed on thedown. historic trocadero clubhouse, crushing the roof and triggering a flood inside. it took $2.5 million to restore the landmark. now it's back open and ready to host weddings and other celebrations. the city expects to get reimbursed by fema. >> this morning. levi's stadium has a bit of a mystery. officials have planned a news conference for noon to announce a new concert coming later this year. they haven't left any clues about who is coming, but they say sourdough, sam and the 40 niners gold rush cheerleaders will be there for the reveal. >> apparently, the team has been talking about this all night. who could it be, really? but we don't know. see, i was. >> like, oh, beyonce. but she would never allow them to make that announcement. lady gaga? no, she didn't even. >> this is no shade. but if it's like the rolling stones or i'm like, not another rolling stones farewell tour. i can't do this

really wish we could keep some of this warm weather, but we cool off. we bring back the cloud cover and then rain is back in the forecast sunday into early next week. we'll show you that in one second. temperatures right now for the most part, we do have a few chilly spots. sonoma danville are typical cool areas in the upper 30s, buta lot of us are starting our morning in the 40s and 50, so we did hang on to some of the milder air we had yesterday afternoon. so the forecast today it's mostly sunny all day long. look how quickly these temperatures warm up by the middle part of the day. we're already in the 60s and low 70s. and then later on this afternoon, about 5 to 15 degrees above average in most areas. so highs today we're going into the 70s, a few spots in the south bay going into the low 80s. so it's a warmer afternoon. it's mostly sunny, a light breeze out there out of the northeast. so looking at highs today versus average, anywhere from about 8 to 16 degrees above average for this time of year. typically we're in the low and mid 60s for the end of february. today we're in the 70s and

it is chilly at 39 degrees, but in oakland and in san francisco it's a bit warmer. in the mid 50s, 40s and 50s around the bay shoreline. a similar mixed bag. temperatures in the north bay where we have those sheltered valleys. we're in the low 40s, but sausalito right along the water, coming in at 53 degrees. so we will see mostly sunny skies today. just like yesterday. temperatures are going to warm up really quickly. so by 1130 look at these numbers already above average for this time of the year. and then later on this afternoon, not only into the 70s, but likely we'll have several cities in the south bay going into the low 8-80, which is a few degrees warmer than we were yesterday. just like yesterday to the evening is going to feel very pleasant and mild. so here we go once again, spring. like some areas nearly 15 degrees above average, widespread 70 and low 80. later on this afternoon, let's check in with gloria. see those drive times. >> good morning. yeah. you know, we have a sig alert in south san francisco that we're tracking this morning. there is a fuel spill. this is on southbound 101 before south san francisco. this is a two vehicle crash that caused

board ultimately voted to issue layoffs and eliminate about 100 full time positions. this comes as usd needs to cut $95 million from next year's budget. originally, the board was looking into closing schools at the end of last year, but they got so much pushback from the community that plan was quickly scrapped. janelle harris, a parent at mcclymonds high school, urged the board last night to consider making cuts from the top instead of their valued teachers. >> all of our teachers are 11 month staff members, every single teacher at mcclymonds, and i'm looking at this cut list and i'm just like, please don't do that to us. we have the highest risk students that we serve, and we do it with love. and we need our teachers like, please don't do this. cut from the top. >> a previous plan to close and merge schools back in 2022 led

>> you heard the sheriff there. i'm going to repeat it. besides the jump itself, the location can be particularly dangerous. the descent is fast, and a jumper could wind up in the pacific ocean. >> a simple conversation on a plane turned into a big investigation. and that led to a trove of these illegal taxidermy animals here in the bay area. here's how it started. two officers from the state department of fish and wildlife were flying back from training when they started talking to a couple discussing hunting. the couple eventually revealed they had a family member with a huge trophy room in napa county featuring a mountain lion, a wolverine. both are protected species. the couple also had a large collection of illegally collected animals at a home in butte county. the couple and that relative were charged with poaching crimes and had to pay fines. in the south bay, morgan hill is facing a $20,000 bill to fix the damage done by copper wire thieves. it's part of a trend that keeps happening across the bay area. morgan hill

police say they arrested two people for the theft and vandalizing light poles this week. last month, a vallejo school had to cancel classes after copper theft left the school without power. last summer, copper wire theft in the east bay downed 9-1-1 lines in pinole, hercules, and san pablo. we spoke to one expert who explained why thieves continue to target copper wire. >> unfortunately, when you look at street lights, it's pretty easy. targets. thieves are able to pry the bottom access door off and just pull the wire out. >> some cities are trying to stop theft by replacing traditional street lights with solar powered lights. with the solar panels on the top of the poles, others are filling the bases of the poles with cement that prevents theft, but it also makes maintenance a lot harder. this. >> this morning we are. >> it's your turn. >> new developments. >> in the effort to get the menendez brothers out of jail. their family is set to speak publicly today after governor newsom gave their bid for clemency, a potential boost. abc

news reporter melissa don explains the governor's order and what comes next. >> a new order by california's governor could grant clemency for eric and lyle menendez. the beverly hills brothers, imprisoned for the last 35 years for their parents murder. gavins newsom, sharing on his podcast that he has directed the parole board to conduct a risk assessment investigation into the brothers application for resentencing. >> the question for the board is a rather simple one. do eric and lyle menendez? do they pose a current, what we call unreasonable risk to public safety? >> in a letter obtained by abc news, the governor says he'll weigh the impact on victims and survivors. the brothers self-development in prison and their use of available rehabilitative programs. the move for resentencing is a way to change their sentences of life without parole, and give the brothers an opportunity to be freed from prison. all this follows new evidence submitted to the la da's office of a letter written by eric menendez

just a light breeze out of the east at about five miles per hour. in santa rosa we go. we have clear skies as well. so the theme is that we will see a lot of sunshine today. it's our typical cool temperatures in the morning, but the afternoon is going to feel quite warm. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. you do notice a little movement in the atmosphere right here. this is what we call a cutoff low. it's removed from the jet stream. so it's going to wobble along the coast over the next couple of days. what it will do the center of the low is actually going to go into southern california. but you do notice on satellite it is producing some high clouds that will move into our neck of the woods over the next couple of hours. it will produce a really brilliant sunrise. you'll notice that once the sun is up here in about an hour, but we do expect mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures on the way. so look at the day planner. you see a lot of sunshine in the forecast. sunrise today is at 643. it feels like spring in the morning, then the afternoon. these temperatures, not only in the 70s, but some spots in the south bay, will be going into the low 80s. in

i was 544. a bay area native is going home with some big bucks after winning mr. beast's beast games. san mateo resident jeffrey randall allen. he beat 1000 other contestants to win $10 million. he secured his win after correctly guessing which briefcase contained the winning prize. now, allen told the chronicle he already knows what he wants to do with the money. his seven year old son has a rare genetic disorder called kri creatine transporter deficiency, and he'll spend part of the money improving his son's quality of life and helping him to rest, helping also to fund research to find a cure for the disorder. now to the big weekend here on abc seven for the second straight week, the

air, but it looks like the pattern will change in a big way. cooler weather is back, cloudier skies, and we do have rain back in the forecast sunday into early next week, but temperatures today get out and enjoy if you have a chance. yesterday. today's even warmer. typically this time of the year we're in the low and mid 60s, but today some areas more than 10 to 15 degrees above average. san jose we're going for a high of 80 degrees. so the forect does call for a lot of sunshine today. mostly sunny. you see those temperatures starting out in the 40s and 50s. we'll climb into the 60s and 70 by 11 a.m, and then we're on our way well into the 70s later on this afternoon. so highs today, it's going to feel very nice. warmer than yesterday. mostly sunny. look at that range of temperatures. it doesn't get too much better. in late february. we have these temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees above average. now overnight tonight what you'll find not too chilly 40s and 50s as we head into friday. now friday is still mild out there. not as warm as today, but it still feels nice over the weekend though. cooler weather moves in here thanks to this. an area of low pressure that's going to sit on top of a sunday. bring us some light rain into early monday.

warning about scam texts targeting drivers here in the bay area. the latest fraudulent text looks real, but the san francisco municipal transportation agency says it will never send a text for unpaid tickets. for seven on your side. abc seven news anchor dion limb spoke with an expert with tips on how to stay safe. >> no matter who you ask.

never request payment in a link via text. the metropolitan transportation commission says they've recently seen a similar scam involving texts alleging to be from fastrak. >> i never clicked the link. i always just go to the website and then check it out. >> according to cybersecurity expert john horst, these phishing scams are evolving from email to text. >> seems like it's something new, when in fact it's really not anything new. it's just a different media by way to conduct the same type of attack. >> he recommends, along with awareness, that consumers should consider anti-malware and antivirus protections for their smartphones. >> the most important thing is that the public understands that their phones are computers. the technology is identical. >> by wednesday afternoon, the link from the fraudulent sfmta text no longer worked. but horst says it won't be long until the next cyber scam pops up. cell phone users we spoke with say they're ready. >> maybe more cautious than than ever before. with with anything that's coming through on a text,
