7:42 am
measles cases are rising. we see pockets of unvaccinated. in order to protect those pockets, we need 95% of the community to be vaccinated. the problem is our community rates of vaccination are about 93%. we don't have that fire wall around those unvaccinated groups. that's where we see it spreading. unfortunately, they are a vulnerable population who end up potentially being even more at risk in addition to those in general. >> george: measles highly contagious. >> it is. when you think about contagious you think about the flu and covid and even scary diseases like ebola. this by far and away surpasses that. if i walked into a room with measles and there were ten people who were unvaccinated, nine would get it. it can live in the air for two hours. in general, if you are exposed you will develop symptoms anywhere from 7 to 14 days after ward. >> george: you can be contagious

7:44 am
>> i think we forget how dangerous measles can be. before we had a vaccine in the 1960s, 40,000 to 60,000 people in this country were hospitalized. we saw 400 to 500 deaths. it is important to think about complications. 1 in 20 kids with get pneumonia from the measles. up to three out of 1,000 kids can die. really important to get your kids vaccinated with the mmr vaccine 12 to 15 months is the first dose, 4 to 6 years is the second dose. >> rebecca: dr. narula, thank you. >> george: coming up how two big fast food chains are breaking the surcharge trend when it comes to eggs. next lara and james back in hollywood. >> lara: it's flashback friday. we are pulling out some of our best oscar moments from the gma vault. >> james: and our "play of the day" in honor of oscar weekend. we'll be right back. it is plant
