something like this? it happened early this morning at john reed elementary school in rohnert park. >> abc seven news anchor dion lim was there and found it's not just this one incident that's worrying parents. >> for people to break into their classrooms, it's scary. >> the lights are off and doors are shut at john reed elementary school in rohnert park. classes canceled for over 400 k through fifth grade students. after about half of the school's classrooms were vandalized early monday morning. >> if it had been a couple of classrooms, we definitely would have held school, but it was enough to warrant us closing the school today. >> the cotati-rohnert park unified school district superintendent wouldn't specify what kind of damage was done to the ten or so classrooms affected, but noted crews would be spending the rest of the day cleaning up. >> it's definitely concerning. hopefully that doesn't happen again. >> this isn't the first incident where john reed has been targeted for crime. i obtained two messages that went out to parents in january, alerting them of another act of vandalism, and a man who was arrested because he made threats against the school.

>> the rock throwing incident. the threat? this. it's weird that it's so much action around this specific city. >> every parent i spoke with said they wished for more security measures going forward. >> when i moved out here, i noticed that the schools aren't gated and for i'm very scared for my kids to start school here because that's one thing i don't like. >> we're also assessing that and what we need to do to make sure that our campuses are safe. >> while the school district assesses the damage and determines if anything was stolen, they're 99% certain cleanup will be complete in time for kids to attend school tuesday. >> i miss my friends. >> the missed school day will be made up later in the year. in rohnert park dion lim, abc seven news. >> new developments tonight for oakland fire stations that were headed for closure will now stay open. the city of oakland is currently dealing with an $89 million budget deficit. according to the san francisco chronicle, the city was able to bring that number down from 130 million and is now planning to

open three currently closed fire stations by the end of june. they're also able to prevent the closure of an additional four firehouses. >> the man who headed up the east oakland boxing association, a nonprofit, was in federal court today in oakland facing four counts of tax evasion and one count of mail fraud. he's accused of pocketing funds, including a charitable donation check from warriors player steph curry. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley has the latest from court. >> solomon howard, the former executive director of the east oakland boxing association, arrived in court to face a federal judge on charges of tax evasion and mail fraud from when he was in charge from 2017 to 2021. the east oakland boxing association is a nonprofit mentoring agency for local youth that includes kickboxing and coaching. the boxing association took the national spotlight in 2019, when a $50,000 donation from stephanie curry was featured in this clip from the

ellen degeneres show, and howard was front and center. >> oh my gosh, that's right. you got a lot of redecorating to do for sure. >> court documents allege that howard deposited the $50,000 donation check into a personal account without the knowledge of board members, according to federal prosecutors. howard engaged in a scheme to embezzle money and property from eobr. documents claim he bought $100,000 of personal items on amazon, including a queen bed delivered to his home using the debit card. and prosecutors allege he embezzled funds to pay for two cars and a vacation rental property. howard pleaded not guilty on all counts and was ordered released under pretrial supervision with $25,000 bond. howard and his attorney did not respond to requests to comment on the case. and the interim director of the eobr said they would release a statement in the

coming days. solomon howard could face up to 20 years in prison on just the fraud charge. solomon has no previous criminal history. he is expected back in court on april 9th. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> now to an update on the criminal case involving an embattled south bay politician. former san jose city councilman omar torres pleaded not guilty today to charges of sex crimes with minors. he faces three felony counts of child sexual assault. torres resigned from city council last november. a special election is set for april 8th to fill his seat. ballots started being mailed out last week. >> opening statements started today in the civil rights scandal against two ex antioch police officers. according to the east bay times, the trial kicked off this morning and is expected to span several weeks. federal prosecutors claim the two plotted with other officers to hurt people for sport while on duty. they're also accused of falsifying or omitting key

details from police reports. the defense says the two were just doing their job, and says their text exchanges were just exaggerations, not plans for real abuse. >> next steps in the saga of san mateo county's embattled sheriff are now in the hands of voters. voters are already casting ballots for tomorrow's special election on measure a. now, if measure a is approved, it would give the board of supervisors the authority to remove the sheriff from elected office. abc seven news political reporter monica madden is here with the latest on the vote. monica. >> dan, this all stems back to allegations that sheriff corpos engaged in an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, victor i, and calls for her removal followed in november report examining accusations that she abused her powers and racist and homophobic messages, and created a toxic work environment, all allegations she forcefully denies. >> i haven't faltered in my job. like i've said, crime is down. the communities are safe.

>> on the eve of an election that threatens her career, san mateo county sheriff cristina corpus remains defiant. >> i am being crucified in the public eye for allegations. >> in an interview with abc seven news monday, the sheriff defends her work, saying she has received unfair treatment. >> i've been met with resistance from day one. holding people accountable has been called retaliation. disappointed is putting it lightly. >> it's uneasiness that has bled into county meetings and divided community activists. >> there's just too much turmoil. >> jim lawrence previously supported corpus but says her time has passed. >> we really need to get back down to normal. and i certainly hope that she'll step up and say, you know, let's just end this and go forward. you know. >> it's just a power grab. >> dan says giving the board this type of power sets a bad precedent. >> it's a slippery slope. there's no end to it. and quite frankly, it's clear that the

state of california never intended for a district elected board of supervisors to have an immediate mechanism to remove a countywide sheriff. >> the measure will grant supervisors the ability to remove a sheriff until 2028. that's when corpus term is set to expire. >> if the people don't want me to be the sheriff, then a recall should take place. >> outcomes aside, community members are hoping to see change to prevent similar situations from happening again. >> addresses a short term problem, but systemic issues require systemic changes. >> if voters approve measure a, it will still be quite some time before sheriff could be out of her job. the county elections department will first have to certify the vote. then the board of supervisors will have to present their case for removal to the public, and also allow corpus to share her side of the story before the public. four out of the county's five supervisors will have to sign off on a vote to kick her out of office. ultimately. dan. ama. >> okay, monica. thank you.

valley transportation authority is warning riders about a potential strike that could impact their commute as soon as tomorrow. the union contract for bus and light rail operators and other frontline staff expires at midnight tonight. if they don't reach a deal with vta, then union members will strike. and that means bus and light rail services will not be available. vta will only run paratransit service. the agency is encouraging riders to plan for alternate transportation. >> looks like the bay area has some work to do when it comes to closing the gender pay gap between men and women. in honor of women's history month, troc info dot net completed a new analysis of data from the department of labor and u.s. census bureau. the data shows san jose ranks fourth on the list of large u.s. cities with an earnings gap. women earned $0.72 for every dollar men earn. and in sunnyvale, which the report labeled a mid-size city, the disparity is even wider. women earn $0.56 for every dollar that a man earns. >> seven on your side is hosting

it needs to be named. the public can pitch their idea and vote in a contest. there have already been more than 250 submissions, including the great parkway, the coastline, two good ones, and online. vote begins on march 18th and will close on april 2nd, at which time the name will be announced. >> got some good ones already. all right. a bay area weather radar system that is used, used to protect the weather is now predict the weather, i should say, is down. the radar sits atop mount eminem in the santa cruz mountains. it's been out of service since midday saturday, pushing meteorologists to rely on surrounding radars to fill in the coverage gaps. these national weather service radars detect the size and movement of particles of rain, snow, hail, dust. it's not clear when the radar will be fixed and back online, but it has made sandia's challenging job even more so because it's so precise in what. >> she does. although you didn't need anything to detect the wind. i mean, that woke me up overnight. it's crazy. >> it did. it was pretty breezy.

sandia. >> yeah, it has definitely been gusty out there. dan and let me show you live doppler seven. right now, clouds are gathering in advance of our next system that is on its way. as we take a look at a wider perspective here, you can see that system off the coastline. unfortunately, it's not going to bring us a ton of rain, but we will see some. we're already looking at some radar returns off the northern california coast right now. those temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. it has been gusty right now. oakland 30 miles an hour. 29, in san mateo. onshore breezes making it feel even chillier. a live view from our santa cruz camera and you can see various levels of cloud cover, but definitely has been a windy one. as we look at a live picture from emeryville. clouds are gathering tomorrow. drizzle or isolated showers midweek. we are looking at scattered showers and friday going into saturday. sunnier and milder weather is coming our way in case you're waiting for that, because today's highs were only in the mid 50s to low 60s, below average for this time of year. tonight a lot of cloud cover as we head towards 830 tomorrow

morning, a couple of showers show up in the north bay and then really just isolated at 1130. so if i were you, i would just have the umbrellas handy. really the main event is on wednesday. you will notice in the evening some light to moderate showers at 6:00 going into 8 p.m. into the east bay, parts of the south bay, and then look at thursday. spotty showers. but this model wants to bring in a little bit of snow over mount hamilton, so just shows you how cold the air mass will become later on. on thursday, some spotty showers continuing thursday morning, as you will notice, and likely into the afternoon as well. rainfall totals not much, expecting most areas under a quarter of an inch, san francisco could pick up about 4/10 of an inch. a winter weather advisory goes up for the sierra 4 a.m. wednesday until 4 p.m. thursday. above 5000ft, expecting 8 to 14in above 6000. so of course, slippery roadways and travel could be difficult, so keep that in mind. your morning temperatures will look like this in the 30s and 40. yes, it will
