saved. >> and welcome back. we're being joined now by the incredibly versatile hollywood star simu liu. he's an actor best known for the beloved marvel superhero. sean shi. >> you okay? >> now he's back with a new survival thriller, as we call it last breath. welcome to nightline. >> thank you so much. it's so lovely to be here. >> well, we know that the movie is based on an incredible true story. and it's the world of saturation diving known as the most dangerous job in the world. i know you're known for doing your own stunts, even in marvel. how did how did doing the stunts inform the way you played this character? >> i knew that i was going to have to get really good at scuba diving really quickly, and not just scuba diving the way that we do, you know, on vacation. but like the real deep in the bottom of the ocean or the bottom of the sea where there's no visibility. and, you know, these divers are just like

staring at pieces of pipe. >> you're diving into the abyss on this. but let's take a look at this role of the deep sea diver and what happens. it's a real thriller. >> what happens now? is your umbilical. it's going to snap. you'll get pulled off the structure. now i will come back for you. but you have to do something for me, okay? you have to get yourself back to the top of the manifold. i can't rescue you if i can't find you. understand? >> you said you're basically having flashbacks watching that clip. >> oh, yeah. especially the helmets that we wore because they were, you know, the actual helmets that saturation divers use. they're about 50 pounds. and, you know, you put that around your head and you go underwater and it's like it's weirdly very claustrophobic. or maybe not weirdly. >> yeah, understandably. and i know that on set, the real life divers dave duncan and chris wright visited the set. what was it like to film and know that

they're reacting in real time? >> it's such a gift. anytime you're portraying, you know, real life events, to have the characters that are not only alive and still with us, but, you know, cooperative and willing to kind of lend their expertise. and so the character i play is dave yuasa, who, you know, is one of the two divers in the water that day. and i'll tell you what, if i was ever stuck in the bottom of the ocean, there's nobody else i'd rather have come for me than the real dave yuasa, because he's just incredible. >> oh, that's amazing. >> but i know so many of your fans know you as the first asian-american marvel superhero. and true to form, your asian immigrant parents were not very happy about your failed accounting career and your choice as an actor. >> i mean, none of us had had any sort of exposure to the entertainment industry. and so i think when i showed up one day and i was like, hey, guys, i lost my job as an accountant, and i've decided that i'm going to be an actor. my parents thought, like, ready to take me to an institution because they were like, where is this coming from? and i think in the

beginning they thought that i was checked out, that i was lazy, and i was just trying to make up an excuse to not have to do any work, when in reality, i had kind of found something that i was legitimately very passionate about, and i think it took a little bit of time for them to come around to the idea, and it took a bit of time for me to show them, you know, just how passionate i was and how hard i was willing to work. >> but at the same time, you're in dragon's den, which is the equivalent of shark tank. you even invested in the soup dumpling concern. what makes you passionate about investing in asian heritage businesses? >> i think a lot about representation. i represent in a certain way on screen, you know, with the role that i play within the marvel universe, that representation can occur off screen as well. it occurs, you know, when you go to the supermarket to see your food and the flavors of your culture, you know, being represented and accepted and celebrated. so it's a wonderful thing. and it's definitely not what maybe we had when we were young. >> you represented as asian ken, which i appreciated, and you were known to belt out. i'm just ken opposite white. ken on the oscar stage. could we see you singing and dancing on broadway
