cloud cover with us all morning long and throughout the afternoon it's just limited sunshine and like yesterday, will keep the trend of temperatures cooler than average for early march. so mostly cloudy on your tuesday. daytime highs for a lot of us will stay in the 50s to near 60 degrees this afternoon. let's check in with sue hall, see how the commute is going on this tuesday. >> good morning drew. we have metering lights on at exactly 530 this morning and you can see the buildup starting. taking a look at your drive from hercules through the 80 corridor all the way through this backup into the city is now about a 40 minute drive. we put it in the yellow popping to san jose 280. this is right at the 17 880 overcrossing. you've got about a seven minute drive from downtown san jose towards cupertino. in the northbound direction. you can see our early morning commuters up. and adam, it's about a 45 minute ride towards a little bit more towards 50 minutes and very windy out this morning. so please use extra

caution if you are driving over the altamont pass. guys. >> sue thank you. as you're waking up this morning, we are tracking breaking news on the economy. mexico has just announced retaliatory tariffs on u.s. goods. hours after president trump's tariffs went into effect. now there are two levels. there will be a 25% on goods from mexico and canada. the tariff on goods from china doubled to 20%. u.s. companies pay the fees when items enter the country. most say that they will be forced to pass the cost onto all of us, though the trump administration has downplayed how it will be passed on to consumers. analysts say that we will likely see price increases on many things, from food to cars, by memorial day. canada and china announced their own retaliatory tariffs yesterday. but again, we have just learned that mexico is now implementing them on us goods as well. u.s. stock markets are closed. they all closed way down yesterday on the news of the tariffs. overnight futures were mostly

flat. but we'll see how investors react in just about 30 minutes when those markets open. of course we will keep you updated on that. it is election day in san mateo county. there's only one thing on the ballot. voters are being asked to give county supervisors the power to remove the elected sheriff from office. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in redwood city, with more on the reason for the election and how long you have to turn in your ballot. good morning lena. >> well, gloria, if voters approve, measure a, this is something that would change the county charter and give the board of supervisors the ability to remove a sheriff until the year 2028. that's when the term of current sheriff, cristina corpus, is set to expire. remember, this all stems back to allegations that sheriff corpus engaged in an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, victor, and calls for her removal followed a november report examining accusations that she abused her power, sent racist and homophobic messages, and created a toxic work

environment. all allegations she forcefully denies. but some opponents believe giving the board this type of power sets a bad precedent. >> it's a slippery slope. there's no end to it. and quite frankly, it's clear that the state of california never intended for a district elected board of supervisors to have an immediate mechanism to remove a countywide sheriff. >> i've been met with resistance from day one. holding people accountable has been called retaliation. disappointed is putting it lightly. >> in an interview with abc seven on monday, the sheriff defended her work, saying she has received unfair treatment, calling the special election a political attack. if voters pass measure a, supervisors would have to take several steps to fire corpus. it would take four out of the five supervisors voting to remove her if they find cause to do so. all registered voters here in san mateo county should have already received a ballot in the mail.

there are 18 different ballot drop boxes set up around the county. just make sure you drop those off before 8:00 tonight. live in redwood city. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. san francisco's only safe parking site for people living in rvs is shutting down. now people are wondering where they're going to go. sky seven was overhead as tow trucks started hauling vehicles away from the bay view vehicle triage center in candlestick point last night, and there was some outrage from people who still live there. they claim they received no warning. the city says there were community meetings and written notifications of this closure. >> probably 20 rvs left in there that people aren't giving them up. so what are we supposed to do? where are we supposed to go? and rv parks are what the solution is all across the country for ultra poor people to live in. it is americana. >> the city says the site has served 132 households since it opened in 2022. it's also been the focus of legal disputes, code violations and extensive complaints from people living

nearby. city officials issued a statement to abc seven news saying everyone was offered a permanent housing rental subsidies, alternative shelter and or relocation assistance. >> as san francisco closes a safe parking site, san jose is in the middle of opening one. the city says it is moving people in in phases starting this month. the six acre patch of land is located on berryessa road. it's set to be the largest rv supportive parking program in the city, with room for 85 rvs and access to utilities and other city services. the project costs $7.5 million. san jose started banning rvs in certain parts of the city at the beginning of the year, forcing people to move or be towed. >> this week, we're a step closer to the trial of a woman accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a bay area social media model. 34 year-old ashton gerken was known for looking like kim kardashian. she died two years ago after prosecutors say she received an illegal silicone botox injection. they say 50 year-old

vivian gomez, an unlicensed cosmetologist from florida, performed the procedure in a burlingame hotel room. experts say it's important people go to certified cosmetologists for these procedures, as they can cause serious harm if not done correctly. >> it's not injected in a certain plane. and in this case, it's a free floating substance which can also cause migration down the road. >> a trial date for this case will be decided friday. developing news on the situation with ukraine. president trump has ordered a pause on all military aid to the country. according to the white house, the order comes after friday's confrontation in the oval office. the president and vice president, j.d. vance, ended up yelling at ukrainian president zelensky. zelensky then left the white house without signing the minerals deal that brought him to the u.s. president zelensky says the deal doesn't provide enough security for his country. responding to criticism that he's playing right into vladimir putin's hands. president trump

semitism. the department of justice is sending a federal task force to uc berkeley. it will be investigating whether the university failed to protect jewish students and faculty members from discrimination. pro-palestinian protests ignited across college campuses nationwide following the start of the israel-hamas war in october of 2023. this is video from uc berkeley last spring. uc

berkeley is one of ten universities the doj task force will be looking into, including ucla and usc. the doj did not say when the visits would happen. in the north bay, hundreds of students are expected back in class today after vandalism forced one school to shut down yesterday. this happened early in the morning at john reed elementary school in rohnert park. the superintendent would not confirm what kind of damage was done, but said about half of the classrooms were impacted. we spoke to parents who say they wish there was more security going forward. >> when i moved out here, i noticed that the schools aren't gated and for i'm very scared for my kids to start school here because that's one thing i don't like. >> we're also assessing that and what we need to do to make sure that our campuses are safe. >> crews spent the day cleaning up and determining if anything was stolen. police are investigating the vandalism but have not made any arrests. a

federal judge has ruled the group of lobster fishermen can sue a monterey bay aquarium conservation program for defamation. the lawsuit focuses on the aquarium's awareness campaign about sustainable seafood. seafood watch put lobster from the u.s. and canada on its do not eat list in 2022. some retailers then pulled lobster from stores. a fishermen group out of maine sued, saying that the listing damaged the industry's reputation. a spokesperson for the monterey bay aquarium says it has a right to share its recommendations with the public. a federal judge is allowing the lawsuit to move forward. pets are known to have their funny and cute moments, and this dog owner from new york went viral after she shared the odd habit that her dogs have. so these two dogs are brother and sister. they are max and marley, and you can see here they have an interesting eating ritual between the two. the owner posted this video to tiktok and explained the dogs have been

cloud cover this morning. it's just a cool day. again we keep those temperatures below average through much of the forecast tomorrow and thursday. we'll introduce scattered showers as a front moves through by the end of the week, friday and into the start of the weekend. sunshine is back and we'll find some warmer weather as well. but this morning you look at the forecast and it's just cloudy. all those icons showing you we keep it overcast all morning long and those temperatures just really slow to climb with limited sunshine. so today we'll find mostly cloudy conditions. temperatures for a lot of us staying in the 50s. parts of the east bay, the south bay getting into the low 60s. but still even that is below average for this time of the year. now, overnight tonight, this is when we start to find a better chance of showers after midnight. overnight lows in the 40s and in the 50. so here's a look at future weather. today it's all about the cloud cover. some coastal drizzle at best. then tomorrow morning we will track some light showers beginning to move through the region so we could have some damp roadways first thing tomorrow morning. as

how much screen time their kids are getting. san bruno based youtube and the american psychological association have teamed up to release a new guide. this guide offers recommendations for talking to your kids about what and how much they watch online. but instead of focusing on setting a specific screen time limits, it focuses on media literacy. so we're talking about teaching kids how to recognize advertisements or identifying influencer sponsored content. the guide is available right now on youtube's official blog. a possible battery, fire and explosion caused $100,000 worth of damage to a restaurant in mountain view. the flames raced through a maison on castro street yesterday morning. firefighters say the fire caused a co2 cylinder inside to

gate bridge. no problems if you're traveling the 80 corridor this morning, we always like to give you that time frame. it is the busiest section of freeway in the entire bay area, so you're looking at about a 40 minute drive from hercules into san francisco via the bay bridge toll plaza. 8-80 is moving nicely here near the coliseum, but we have a couple of problems on 881st in hayward, southbound near a street. we had an accident, and you can see traffic is really slow from 2.38 and continues slow past highway 92. >> thank you. sue. now we want to go back to the big board at the new york stock exchange. trading just opened for the day. and as you can see, we're continuing this trend of being down quite a bit. so right now we are down 356 points. it took a real nosedive yesterday when president trump announced that new tariffs would go into effect against canada and mexico and china. of course we're going to keep track of these numbers all morning and all day long. >> and canada and china both announced retaliatory tariffs

yesterday. so mexico announced their own within just the past hour on goods from the u.s. that's breaking news today. >> they did announce just how high those tariffs would be. the country's president saying she's going to lay out specific products to be targeted in a public address sunday. >> all of this is raising concern about the economy and how much more americans will have to pay for everything from food to cars. abc news reporter nicole d'antonio is live in washington. to break it down for us. good morning nicole. well, good morning. >> to both of you. and just this morning we are seeing other countries responding following president trump's tariff announcement. overnight, president trump imposing new tariffs targeting our largest trading partners, canada and mexico. trump adding a 25% tax on all goods coming across the border from mexico and canada, and an additional 10% tax on chinese products, which now makes it 20%. the yale budget lab estimates that the tariffs could cost the average household

up to $2,000 annually. canada, responding with a 25% tariff of its own on american goods. >> we are ready. should the u.s. decide to launch their uh- their trade war, we will be ready. we are not looking for this. we're not seeking this. there's a level of unpredictability and chaos that comes out of the oval office, and we will be dealing with it. >> economists warn those tariffs are paid for by american businesses, and those costs are then passed on to american consumers by raising prices. that means it could end up costing you more to buy many household goods, including electronics, food and beverages, and oil and gas. >> i suspect by memorial day, we will all feel the effects of the higher prices on all these different products that we import from china, canada and mexico. >> the auto industry is also expected to take a hit, with the average new car cost increasing by over $3,000, according to

research from j.p. morgan. >> so what they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the united states. >> but trump says the tariffs are needed. he says the u.s. is getting ripped off by bad trade deals that cost american jobs. and he claims canada and mexico aren't doing enough to stop illegal immigration and fentanyl shipments, even though less than 1% of the fentanyl in the u.s. comes across the canadian border. >> the canadian. >> now u.s. farmers could also soon start to feel the pinch after china announced overnight it will impose additional tariffs up to 15% on u.s. goods. that includes chicken, beef, soy beans and also wheat. and gloria, we know the tariffs are set to take effect for products shipped out as early as next week. >> nicole, thank you so much. business owners in the bay area are reacting to the new tariffs on products from china. abc seven news was at the new wheel electric bikes in san francisco yesterday. they fix and sell thousands of e-bikes every year and they use many parts from china, including lithium

batteries and steel spokes. both products are impacted by the tariffs. co-owner karen wiener says it's frustrating for small businesses. >> prices just keep creeping up when you have arbitrary tariffs being introduced, with no new policies around domestic production or the way we do replace those items, it doesn't make any sense. and it's very bad for business. >> in chinatown, many small businesses stock their shelves with chinese products. they say the price increases will impact seniors on fixed incomes the most. president trump's first address to congress during his new term is tonight. it's widely expected that he will address the tariffs, among other things. we will have live coverage starting at 6 p.m, including the democratic response wherever you watch abc seven. >> if you live in san mateo county, you have until 8 p.m. to submit your special election ballot. there's only one thing to vote on, but it's something that's caused a lot of debate in the community. county

redwood city. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. this morning, we have an update on the criminal case involving an embattled south bay politician. former san jose city councilman omar torres pleaded not guilty on charges of sex crimes with minors. he faces three felony counts of child sexual assault. torres resigned from the city council in november. a special election is set for april 8th to fill his seat. the ballots started being mailed out last week. >> this morning, vta officials warning riders to start thinking about possible alternatives for their commute. overnight, the contract for bus and train operators expired. now, a strike is possible in the coming days. vta says it's actively working to reach an agreement with the union. it offered workers a 9% raise over three years, but the union says that isn't enough to keep up with the cost of living. if workers do go on strike, there would be no bus or light rail service. >> new developments in the east bay for oakland fire stations that were expected to close will remain open. the city is

currently dealing with an $89 million budget deficit. according to the chronicle, oakland was able to bring that number down from $130 million. it is now planning to open three currently closed fire stations by the end of june, and they're also able to prevent the closure of an additional four fire stations. >> now it's time for our abc seven mornings. announcer. our way of giving you a preview of some bay area headlines in the day ahead. >> first, today is day two in the corruption trial for two former antioch police officers. according to the east bay times. opening statements started yesterday morning. the trial is expected to take several weeks. federal prosecutors claim the two suspects plotted with other officers to hurt people for sport while on duty. and they're also accused of falsifying or omitting key details from police reports. their defense says that the officers were just doing their job and say they're text exchanges were just exaggerations, not plans for real abuse. >> today is fat tuesday, and that means it's your last chance to pick up the traditional king

of a southern california juvenile hall. 30 officers under indictment. they're accused of overseeing what prosecutors are calling gladiator fights between the teens who are in custody. >> they did have multiple gladiator type fights between individuals with probation officers employed by l.a. county. right there in the room. >> california attorney general rob bonta announced the indictment yesterday, more than a year after these videos came to light. cameras captured a series of fights at the los padrinos juvenile hall in la county. this video is now part

of the case against probation officers accused of facilitating nearly 70 fights over six months in 2023. 143 children took part, as prosecutors say the officers looked on and even laughed. >> watching the video. the officers look more like referees or audience members at a prize fight, not adults charged with the care and supervision of young people. the officers don't step in, don't intervene and don't protect their charges. >> the officers are facing multiple charges, including child abuse, conspiracy and battery. the l.a. county probation department called the fights deeply troubling and says it applauds the indictments. the officers involved in the case are on unpaid leave. many made their first court appearance yesterday. >> we have an update to pope francis's ongoing battle with pneumonia. the pope is no longer needing a breathing machine, according to the vatican. he

only needs high flow supplemental oxygen for now. yesterday, the vatican says the pope experienced two new episodes of acute respiratory failure, meaning he was not responding to oxygen therapy. he was also having coughing attacks. doctors performed treatments on the 88 year old to get mucus and fluid out of his lungs. >> in this case, it seems as though he responded thankfully. but in these cases, we closely monitor patients after these critical events because as you've learned so far, these these stages can change hour by hour, if not minute by minute. >> doctors say throughout the ups and the downs of the condition, pope francis has remained alert and oriented. he's been in the hospital for more than two weeks. this morning, a newly unsealed lawsuit against tiktok is revealing details about the app's finances. court documents show the app made $2 billion from tiktok live in just one quarter of 2023, bloomberg reports. 400 million of that came from the us. the financial

data could help structure a deal to keep the app operating in america. tiktok's parent company is still under a deadline to sell the app, or it could be banned because of national security concerns. the lawsuit, filed in october by 13 states including california and washington, dc, is also raising new concerns about the safety of kids online. it claims rampant sexual and financial exploitation on tiktok live, and it says that 70% of 13 to 15 year olds on the app claimed that they were over 18 when signing up. tiktok says that data is outdated and, quote, this lawsuit ignores the number of proactive measures that tiktok has voluntarily implemented to support community safety and well-being. >> now it's your morning money report. kroger ceo has resigned after an investigation into his conduct. rodney mcmullen was the ceo of the grocery chain since 2014, and had been with the company for nearly 50 years. the company says last month it was made aware of personal contact that was inconsistent with

company standards. we don't know exactly what that contact conduct was. kroger is one of the country's largest grocery chains. it owns multiple brands, including foods co, which has several locations here in the bay area. kroger is expected to release its latest earnings report thursday. apple ceo tim cook just teased the launch of a new product this week. cook posted a video to x that says there's something in the air. the video is a callback to the release of the first macbook air in 2008. bloomberg reports this announcement is likely for the next generation of the laptop, with an upgraded m4 computer chip. the cupertino based company revealed its m3 model laptop around the same time last year. a specific date for an official product announcement is still not released. this week, a new costco opens. friday will be opening day for costco in brentwood at lone tree plaza. the store is 155,000ft■!s, which is bigger than the nearby store in concord and one of the largest in the state. the
