embattled sheriff there. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. voters are deciding whether county supervisors should have the power to fire the elected sheriff, cristina corpus. the results so far an overwhelming yes. >> ballots are still being counted, but each update tonight has left the race the same. about 85% of votes in favor of measure a. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is live in san mateo county, with details on the next steps and reactions from both sides. j.r. >> yeah. on the ballots. continue to arrive here at election headquarters in san mateo county. literally in the last 30s. they just put up that gate after two truckloads of ballots came in here a little while ago. now, early on, the public has sided with union leaders who are in favor of measure a when they announced early results earlier at those headquarters, there were loud cheers from the union members that represent the deputies. >> not every ballot has been counted yet, but what we've seen so far from those first results

was incredible, and it really showed that we have the support of the community. i think this shows that the people of this county feel very strongly that sheriff corpus needs to go. >> ballots from at least 15 locations in san mateo county are arriving here tonight and will be counted. results started coming in at 8 p.m. and updates are being made every hour. sheriff cristina corpus, that is, is accused of fostering a culture of intimidation and retaliation. she's also accused of having an inappropriate, intimate relationship with her chief of staff. the sheriff has repeatedly denied those allegations and called the special election a political attack. if measure a passes, it would then allow the county supervisors to vote the sheriff out, something they currently can't do. four of five supervisors would have to vote in favor of removing her. i spoke with sheriff corpus attorney brad gates this evening. you'll hear from him, and then you'll hear what the sheriff said to abc seven's

monica madden yesterday. >> i think we should wait until we get all the results before we make a final decision. and then once we see them, we'll be able to decide the next course of action. >> i was not caught in a brothel in las vegas. i did not send a group of my detectives and lieutenant, you know, to indiana, to strong arm a preacher for a batmobile. i didn't do any of those things. what i'm being accused of is, you know, internal strife. >> and back out here live tonight. election workers inside this building are still busy at work. they just closed that gate just before we opened up tonight. you just heard the lawyer talk about the next course of action. he says depending on how this goes, there could be challenges made to the constitutionality of measure a. so. but at this point, they are waiting to see how this turns out going forward. mail in ballots

postmarked today's date will still be counted, and they'll be counting those for the next week or so. reporting live in san mateo county j.r stone, abc seven news. >> okay. thank you for that j.r. and we are keeping abc seven news.com updated with the latest results. as the county shares them. you can find the vote counts in this story on our website. >> at. usa. usa. usa. usa. >> a divided nation on full display tonight. for more than an hour and a half, republicans cheered and democrats often booed, barely clapping as president trump addressed lawmakers. it was the longest ever presidential address to congress. tense. from the very first moments, the president never explicitly brought up california, though he did criticize climate and electric vehicle policies embraced by the state. we have reaction from bay area lawmakers in a moment. but first, abc news reporter christiane cordero is at the capitol with the biggest moments.

>> tonight in front of a deeply divided congress and nation, president trump touted his administration's first six weeks back in office. >> america is back. >> the speech halted less than ten minutes in for this. house speaker mike johnson, standing alongside vice president jd vance, ordering the sergeant of arms to escort texas representative al green out of the chamber. republicans trying to drown democrats protest with chants of usa! >> usa. usa. >> hours before trump's address sweeping new tariffs kicked in against goods from mexico, canada and china, which combined account for almost half of the products shipped to the u.s. last year. the tariffs could drive costs up on things like gas, groceries and cars. trump tonight doubling down. >> other countries have used tariffs against us for decades. and now it's our turn to start using them against those other countries. april 2nd reciprocal

>> new at 11. abc news has learned new details about one of the president's announcements and arrest in a deadly attack in afghanistan. it happened in 2021 at what's known as abbey gate. occurring as the united states was withdrawing from the country. 13 u.s. service members were killed, along with 160 civilians. abc news has learned the suspect was arrested last month in pakistan and recently handed over to american officials. a criminal complaint describes the suspect as an isis k operative. isis k being a regional part of the organization, claimed the taliban released him from prison just weeks before the attack. all right, now to reaction to the president's speech. a handful of democratic lawmakers walked out mid-speech cameras, capturing some in resistant t-shirts, leaving freshman east bay congresswoman lateefah simon says she was among those who left early, and she said in a statement that she did not need to, quote, listen to more of the president's lies or blatant

celebration of racism and transphobia. end quote. >> house speaker nancy pelosi was among many wearing pink in protest. tonight, the democratic women's caucus called on women to wear pink because, quote, it is the color of power and protest. pelosi stayed for all of trump's speech shortly after she released a statement calling the speech, quote, a manifesto of mistruths. she writes, democrats will continue to lead the fight against president trump's bait and switch assault on america, while republicans stand and applaud it. >> all right, moving on. we are heading into a wet few days for the bay area. scattered showers starting up in time for the morning commute. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking this level. one storm moving in san diego. >> yeah. dan, tomorrow morning, as you wake up or as you head out the door, make sure you have the umbrella. because we do have showers coming in on live doppler seven. some of those radar returns just southwest of the bay area, all in association with this level one system that will move in in just a matter of hours. we go hour by hour, 5:00

in the morning. notice the rain starting to come in from the southwest. it's going to start to lift northward by 8 a.m, so slippery roadways for the commute could be slow going at noontime. we're still looking at those showers. the breeze will be picking up, especially as we head towards the afternoon hours along the coastline 2527 miles an hour. there's even a possibility of thunderstorms on thursday as you look at the thunderstorm risk. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming right up. dan. >> thanks, sandy, very much. >> new details tonight on a crash in oakland that left a car nearly split in half after it slammed into a traffic light pole monday morning. the driver survived. it was at 54th avenue and international boulevard. late today, the police chief announced the department is looking into whether an officer was chasing the vehicle. >> this investigation is meant to determine whether or not a pursuit actually occurred. the officer observed the vehicle turned around, turned on its light, and it struck the pole. so because of the proximity and the sequence of events, we want

to on the side of caution to make sure we are looking at everything from a factual basis. >> if there was a chase in, the next step would be for the police department to look into whether the officer followed protocol. oakland city council members say four fire stations will not be closing, and three others that had been shuttered will be reopening tonight. the city council passed a resolution that will provide all the necessary funding. faced with a massive budget late last year, the city moved to do brown outs to try to save money. that resulted in the closure of two stations in january. a third was already closed because of renovations. city council says all of the stations should open by the end of june. >> police in the north bay are investigating the second incident of a weapon on a high school campus in just a week. after lunch today, santa rosa police arrested an allen high school student with a gun and a folding knife after receiving a tip from another student. now, this is video from a week ago, when a fight in an elsie allen classroom ended with 115 year

old boy stabbing another a number of times. the student is expected to make a full recovery. >> new developments with fremont's controversial camping ban. the plan, passed last month, bans camping on public property as well as aiding and abetting homeless encampments. the city finds itself facing a lawsuit over the ban. the suit was announced during public comment at tonight's city council meeting, and a person actually gave the paperwork to the city clerk. it came up since the city council was going to look into amending the ordinance to eliminate some confusion over who can provide help to the unhoused and other changes over enforcement. the council voted to move forward with amending the ordinance. >> we're to bring you a cereal sushi thief caught in the act. how a restaurant owner stopped a man accused of skipping out on a $1,000 bill. >> an international scheme to cash in on taylor swift's tour using stolen tickets. the stubhub bust leading to criminal charges. >> plus building a better bay area one father at a time, the

of sushi and alcohol without paying. fed up with the raw deal, the restaurant made a plan. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has the moments leading up to the arrest all caught on camera. >> skipping out on a tab and it's all caught on camera. randy musterer, owner of sushi confidential, says this man had done this at least three times between the campbell and san jose locations. >> it's a minimum of 5 or $600, and it may be up towards $1,000 when we're pulling additional receipts. >> muster had a picture of the man for staff to see, along with receipts of the tabs he left behind. >> he always orders multiple beers and multiple food items. >> things change, though. when he tried to dine and dash for a fourth time sunday in campbell. muster said he got a call from his employees that the man had returned to make sure that this was in fact the same man. they made a plan. >> drop the check and tell him that you know, you as the server, you have to close out. so then maybe we can speed up that process. >> the server stays there

waiting for the man to pay. he instead asks to use the restroom. >> acts like he goes into the bathroom, and then immediately he starts to come out the back door. he's greeted by our busser, who prevents him really from going any further. and then that's when he turned back in. >> for safety of staff and customers. muster told the workers to avoid any physical interaction with the man. so he bolted back through the restaurant and out the front door. by now, muster said he and campbell pd were chasing after the suspect but couldn't find him and initially gave up until muster thought he spotted him again. >> i make a u-turn. >> muster called pd who made an arrest. a relief for him and also neighboring businesses. >> i'm thrilled that somebody was caught. the more that, the better. it's a common problem for all of us. >> we reached out to campbell pd, who said the suspect lives in campbell. he was cited and released, expected to appear in court, where they say the santa clara county da may combine the dine and dash cases in both campbell and san jose for steeper penalties. muster hopes

the arrest serves as a lesson to the suspect and others. >> because it is harming small businesses, it's harming all of our employees. and there's security issues with all of this in general. so, you know, we just hope that no one wants to steal from others. >> in campbell, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> more than a month after this massive fire at the martinez refining company, we're learning more about how it started. in a new report to health officials, the refinery says two workers opened equipment for planned maintenance back on february 1st. that's when hydrocarbon materials, the chemicals used in oil and natural gas, started leaking out. the employees ran before the fire sparked. the refinery says more than 7000 gallons of hydrocarbon were released during the fire. most of it burned, sending cancer causing chemicals into the air and some concern the refinery is still shut down as the company assesses the damage. the company does expect to finish its

investigation next month. >> prosecutors say a cyber crime crew made more than half $1 million off stolen concert tickets, their target. taylor swift investigators out of new york say stubhub contractors stole the urls for hundreds of tickets to her eras tour. the jamaican group is accused of sending the tickets to people in new york who resold the tickets on stubhub at extreme markups. the group also targeted adele and ed sheeran concerts, nba games and the u.s. open. stubhub says it discovered the scheme, reported it to authorities and replaced or refunded all stolen tickets. >> an organization in the bay area is working every day to build a better bay area by improving our communities, one father at a time. it's called man to man, a nonprofit that works in the prison system and in the community to educate and support fathers. i spoke with the founder about the mission and the method. stuart, my friend, i'm so glad to see you. thanks for coming on.

and then you can put them away for a few days. all right. and bring out the shades. use caution. here's a look at your weather alert tomorrow morning. you'll want to give yourself a little extra time. scattered showers will mean slippery roads, and there will be areas of low visibility. looking at live doppler seven, the system is just off the coastline. we're seeing the radar returns southwest of the bay area heading in our direction. so by the time many of you wake up in the morning, we'll be seeing a similar situation to what we saw this morning. we did have a few showers go through earlier in the day. mostly trace amounts to a few hundredths of an inch. temperatures right now 40s and 50s. here's a look at a live view from our emeryville camera. gorgeous view as we look back towards san francisco. another view from san jose. looking good as well the next two days. periods of showers friday and saturday. sunny and milder weather and then late sunday into monday it's going to be turning wet and windy once again. so this is a level one system tomorrow through thursday. those scattered showers, breezy conditions, a slight possibility of thunder on

thursday and snow over our highest peaks. it all begins from the southwest. tomorrow morning, 5:00 you will notice the rain moving across the region starts to lift northward by 8 a.m, so this is right around that commute time. noon time. it is still focused in the east bay peninsula. south bay, north bay is actually seeing some sun break. so you might be kind of thinking it's done. not quite. we still have some showers, spotty at 8 p.m. wednesday and then thursday morning. light to moderate pop up showers with some snow popping up over mount hamilton. scattered showers will continue, not just in the morning, but one more. last batch coming through thursday evening before this system is done. we welcome the rain, as you know, but not all areas will get equal amounts where the focus of the rain is going to be is right around mountain view, san jose, fremont, where a half an inch or more. everywhere else we're looking at less but the santa cruz mountains picking up close to three quarters of an inch. the winds are going to pick up a little bit close to 30 miles an

hour there, and then picking up at 30, you'll notice at 4 p.m, san francisco, a little bit on the gusty side going into the late night hours as well, particularly along the coast. winter weather advisory 4 a.m. tomorrow until 4 p.m. thursday in the sierra above 4000ft, expecting accumulating snow at the higher elevations 10 to 16in above 5500. so travel could be difficult. your morning temperatures 30 to 50. make sure you have your rain gear before you head out the door. and then tomorrow afternoon, you might want to have your shades handy, especially if you're in the northern part of the viewing area. highs will be in the 50s and the 60. it's a level one for tomorrow and a one for thursday. then we bring back the sunshine and some warmer weather. upper 50s to mid 60s. by saturday we're talking close to 70 degrees. even most of sunday is all right. don't forget you'll want to spring forward one hour before you go to bed sunday morning. we do go to daylight saving time. and then monday we do have another storm coming in. it's a level one going into
