supervisors is set to give an update today on the future of the historic site. >> plus, mac dre documentary. the local legendary athlete joining steph curry to produce a film on the late vallejo rapper. good morning. it is thursday, march 6th. >> why don't we get started with a check of the forecast with.ith we've got some showers here and there. >> and when we go throughout the morning we'll have some scattered showers out there. it's cold right now as we track an area of low pressure sliding down our coast. so here's live doppler seven this morning. and this is the theme over the next couple of hours. just kind of a peppering of showers. a lot of these are falling along the coast. 1 or 2 of these working their way through the santa cruz mountains. so it's hit or miss isolated showers this morning, some damp spots. it's also cold out there, cold enough that we have snow falling on our highest peaks. when the sun gets up here, mount hamilton is going to have a dusting of snow on top of it, so we'll watch that very closely. it's also quite windy out there. we have winds gusting 20 to 30mph, especially across the city and in the

the east shore freeway. lots of gaps in those headlights. room to move as you make your way towards the bay bridge. no metering lights yet, guys. >> all right, sue. thank you so much. happening today, the saga surrounding the future of the oakland coliseum is set to take another twist. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the studio with more on the last minute meeting called for today. good morning lena. >> good morning gloria. after months of waiting, a special meeting has been called by the alameda county supervisors today. that's where they're expected to give an update on the sale of the coliseum to a group of private developers and investors. according to the agenda, supervisors will meet for a closed session with county attorneys first. then board president david hobart will give an update on the sale. back in january, the board of supervisors voted unanimously to move forward with the sale of the county's ownership share of the coliseum to the african american sports and entertainment group, all for a $125 million price tag. but that deal still has not been finalized. those funds were

expected to help with oakland's $89 million budget deficit, but because of delays, the city made other cost saving measures that included closing three fire stations, laying off about 40 people, a hiring freeze and slashing the police department's overtime budget. though just recently they found other money to reopen those fire stations. the african, the african american sports and entertainment group has proposed a $5 billion project for the site, expected to include some affordable housing, a youth amphitheater, restaurants and museums, according to their agenda. this meeting is expected to start this afternoon at three, starting with public comment on this issue. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> a frightening scene along san francisco's waterfront last week. a woman and her two year old granddaughter were attacked while walking along the embarcadero near townsend street. >> she was like throwing her whole body into protecting this baby like the baby was in front of her. she kept her shoulder to

the attacker, so she was getting hits from the attacker. like the push pull. and yes, the attacker had hands on that baby. the attacker was screaming, that's not your baby! this is my baby. don't take her. and then, you know, forcibly hitting her. >> alyssa zions, her husband and an uber driver were the good samaritans who stepped in to try and help. zion says they were able to get the attacker off the grandmother and child and call police. the attacker took off before the cops got there. zion says officers actually went to the wrong location about 800ft down the street. then they stopped searching after about ten minutes when they got another call. police say no arrests were made. as for the child, family members tell abc7 news she is physically okay, but has been waking up crying at night since the incident. attacks like these are very rare. the national center for missing and exploited children says 99% of child abduction cases they handle have to do with the family member. fewer than 1% involve a stranger

taking a child. you can get detailed information about what crime is like where you live with our abc7 neighborhood safety tracker. you can find it at abc7 news.com or on our abc7 bay area app. >> in the east bay, a house fire in concord left one person dead. the fire department responded to the fire at a home on saratoga avenue around 615 last night. when firefighters arrived, the flames were out, but as they checked the scene, they found a body. investigators say it appears the fire started outside of the home. they have not shared any details about the victim. >> oakland police have released body camera footage of an officer shooting a suspect last month. this happened around the morning of january 4th on macarthur boulevard near 66th 66th avenue. they released a video in which you can hear gunfire, while another shows the suspect carrying what they say is an assault weapon. an officer spotted the man and chased him. the body camera footage shows what happens next. >> get on the ground, please. get on the ground.

ground! get out! get on the ground! are you shot? get on the ground! shots fired. >> ended up getting into a standoff before surrendering. he has since recovered and faces multiple charges. >> today, san mateo county election officials will give an update on the results of tuesday's special election. unless there's a dramatic change, voters are poised to give the board of supervisors the power to remove the elected sheriff. as of the last update, 85% have voted in favor of measure a, and if that holds, it could be at least 40 days before the board takes the first steps to remove sheriff christina corpus. >> soon after, county staff will seek direction from the board of supervisors and a public meeting regarding procedures that will be used to conduct a removal hearing. prior to a removal hearing, the sheriff will be served with a written statement of grounds for removal.

>> corpus is accused of abuse of power, nepotism and retaliation. she has denied all of the allegations. she released a statement yesterday saying, quote, i now have the opportunity to formally challenge and disprove the politically motivated allegations against me. i will not resign. i will continue to fulfill my oath, do my job and work tirelessly to keep the residents of san mateo county safe. >> the bay area has another special election coming up in a little more than a month. this is the race to replace former san jose city council member omar torres, who resigned amid molestation charges in the fall. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez breaks down who's running and what residents say they want to see. >> seven candidates are running to represent the heart of san jose, the businesses and neighborhoods that make up downtown. ruth herrera runs one of those businesses an eco friendly store. >> even the days when i close at 430. i usually stay past 430e at till like seven, 8 or 9. >> as a small business owner

any other type of war, we are ready to fight till the end. even with president trump lifting the tariffs on cars coming from canada and mexico, canada's prime minister said they are not willing to do so until the tariffs are removed. nicole d'antonio, abc news, washington. >> this morning, a major development in president trump's effort to downsize the federal government. abc news has learned the president will issue an executive order as soon as today to close the department of education. it's not clear exactly how this would happen, since congressional approval is needed to dissolve a federal agency. however, sources say the order will direct newly confirmed education secretary linda mcmahon to facilitate the process. the education department employs more than 4000 people. the president has said he wants to give education back to the states. elsewhere, the department of veterans affairs is planning to lay off nearly 72,000 workers, which is 15% of its workforce. >> now, we regret anyone who loses their job, and it's

the city. >> it's been nearly two years since san francisco drag legend heklina died in london. now her friend and longtime collaborator peaches christ is organizing a protest on march 31st in london to demand justice from the metropolitan police. peaches has accused the london police of homophobia for their inaction in solving aquilina's death. no cause of death has ever been issued. heklina was found dead in an apartment during a trip to london. >> there's a legal fight over a uc santa cruz student who was banned from campus last year for participating in a pro-palestinian protest. the aclu is representing the student, and the organization is accusing campus police of violating the constitution. when they seized and searched the student's cell phone. it claims police got a warrant after the student had filed a lawsuit over her campus ban. uc santa cruz is not commenting on the case, except to say that its investigation started before the student's suit. >> democrats in the state assembly are pushing back on governor newsom's $20 billion
