buildings and homes. this morning, a deadly storm wreaking havoc across the country from blizzards in the midwest to torrential rains along the east coast. and, of course, those high winds sweeping across half the country. strong winds of up to 90mph toppling over this truck in kansas. those winds also pushing furniture across a patio and shaking traffic lights. in the south, severe thunderstorms moving out, leaving a trail of destruction in north carolina. a tornado with 90 mile per hour winds ripped apart buildings. >> we don't really know to what extent it is as far as damage goes, but we're thankful that nobody was hurt. >> at least three people killed and six injured after strong storms swept through mississippi. meanwhile, in iowa, whiteout conditions and zero visibility have stranded drivers, cars and trucks scattered across highways. plows

digging vehicles out of the snow as authorities urge people to stay home as this massive storm heads out, more strong winds are expected later today. gusts could reach 40 to 60mph in parts of the northeast. michael. >> all right, stephanie, thank you for that. we're going to go to greg dutra from our station, chicago station wls. who's in for ginger and greg, what you got for us? >> we're all in one storm out. we're rolling another storm in on the west coast. and not to mention, by the way, this one's not quite done with us just yet. still on the backside of that wind alerts that don't go into effect until 4:00 this afternoon. some gusts up to 50mph, but locally on the leeward side of not only the berkshires, but also into the worcester hills, 60 mile per hour gusts. and that extends all the way to downeast maine, which is that area just off to the east of bangor. now let's go from downeast to way west as the next storm system moves in, and a chance for showers and thunderstorms from san diego to la. la saw half an inch of rain yesterday. san diego saw about a quarter of an inch of rainfall,

and they may hear some rumbles of thunder today, as this system does the whole cross country track thing yet again. it brings a few inches of snow all the way through the midwest, and while 1 to 3in not very much. i will say this they are hurting in the midwest for snowfall 18 to 20in below where they normally are, so every single inch of snowfall will help with the spring warm up and fire danger. >> okay. thank you greg. we'll get the latest now on president trump's tariffs on imports from canada and mexico. president gave automakers a reprieve delaying tariffs on cars for a month, while mexico's leader is vowing retaliation against the u.s. chief white house correspondent mary bruce tracking it all. good morning mary. >> good morning george. well, less than 48 hours after slapping sweeping new tariffs on all goods from mexico and canada, the president now agreeing to a one month reprieve for auto imports. it's just the latest move in this chaotic trade war. this morning, president trump giving automakers a temporary escape from his sweeping 25% tariffs on all goods from mexico and canada after the ceos of ford, stellantis and general motors

called the president with a personal appeal. trump agreeing to pause tariffs for one month on cars coming into the u.s. the automakers applauding the move, saying trump's delay helps enable the american automotive sector to thrive. stocks rallying as investors welcomed the delay, but the administration making it clear this is only a short term fix, calling for the automakers to shift their production to the u.s. >> and the. >> way to avoid application of the tariffs is to have your factory and have your facility in the united states of america. >> but it can take years to build new factories and relocate supply chains. economists warn it's american businesses who will pay the price for these tariffs and then pass the cost along to consumers by raising prices. by one estimate, the price of a new car could shoot up by $3,000. americans expected to pay more for everything from electronics to clothes to produce. trump's trade war drawing swift retaliation. canada imposing its own 25% tariffs on american goods, and

mexico vowing to reveal its plans for retaliation this weekend. china says it's ready to fight till the end. >> what was your message in there to house republicans? >> meanwhile, on capitol hill, elon musk meeting behind closed doors with house republicans trying to quell concerns about his efforts to slash the federal government. republicans seeking input on the process after many have been getting an earful from their constituents at town halls. musk leaving that meeting upbeat. >> you know, there's a lot of room, a lot of opportunity to improve expenditures in the government, and then we're making good progress. >> it comes as the department of veterans affairs is now planning to cut over 70,000 employees, 15% of its workforce. the second largest federal agency, the va, provides care for more than 9 million veterans. the cuts raising alarm with the republican chairman of the senate veterans affairs committee, jerry moran, saying the va is in need of reform. but current efforts to downsize the department and increase

efficiency must be done in a more responsible manner. democrats like senator richard blumenthal going further, saying the administration's plan prioritizes private sector profits over veterans care, balancing the budget on the backs of those who served. now. for years, the va has faced criticism that it is inefficient and understaffed, and about a quarter of its workers are veterans themselves, meaning many people who have served this country are about to be fired by its government. >> george and mary. on another front, the president squeezing ukraine. >> yeah, george. and this is all part of the trump administration's effort to try and pressure ukraine to cooperate with its plan to end the war. the trump administration, now pausing intelligence sharing with ukraine, stopping the flow of information that has been critical for its fight against russia. the move is sparking alarm here at home and among our allies, who have been showing a willingness to fill the void. the french president, macron saying yesterday that he wants to believe that the united states will remain by our side, but we need to be ready. if that were not the case. george. >> mary bruce. thanks, michael.

>> all right. thank you, george. president trump is also taking aim at the department of education. he's preparing to sign an executive order directing secretary of education linda mcmahon to dismantle the department. senior political correspondent rachel scott has the details for us. good morning. rachel. >> michael, good morning to you. and the secretary of education, linda mcmahon, has only been on the job for three days. but already this morning, president trump is preparing to sign this executive order directing her to dismantle the department of education. now, even mcmahon acknowledges that this would require an act of congress. the order does instruct her, though, to do as much as she can by law, stating the department of education's main functions can and should be returned to the states. most funding for public schools already is at the state and local level, but the department does oversee billions of dollars in funding to help low income students and students with disabilities, and enforces civil rights laws to prevent discrimination in schools, manages about $1.5 trillion in student loan debt, and it also oversees the process for students applying for college

financial aid through pell grants and fafsa, which for many students is the only way that they get help paying for college. about 17 million students every single year apply for financial aid through fafsa. the question now is how much of that could be directed or moved to be under different agencies, and is there support in congress to eliminate the department of education altogether? robin. >> still, so much uncertainty there. all right, rachel, thank you. now to the measles outbreak spreading to another state. a high schooler in florida has now been diagnosed. eva pilgrim is here with more. good morning eva. >> good morning robin. the first case of measles now reported in florida. the state surgeon general sending a letter to parents at miami's palmetto senior high school confirming a case at the school, saying they are trying now to identify close contacts, but also telling parents there are high vaccination rates at the school. the patient is listed on the florida health website as between 15 and 19 years old. this florida case is the 10th state to join a growing list with measles cases in texas. the cdc sending a rapid response

team there to deal with the outbreak. an unvaccinated child died. at least 22 people have been hospitalized. texas seeing 159 total cases so far. more than a dozen new cases in less than a week. the majority in unvaccinated people or those whose vaccination status is unknown. now, health officials are urging people to make sure they're up to date on their vaccines. the current cdc recommendation is that people get two doses, the first at 12 to 15 months of age and the second between 4 and 6 years old. one dose is 93% effective, two is 97%. most adults don't need a booster, but if you're concerned, you can talk to your doctor about what's best for you and your health situation. george. >> okay. thank you very much. we turn now to new development in the idaho college murders trial. brian kober's defense team revealed dna from three people was found under the fingernails of one victim. kayna whitworth has the story. good morning. hannah. >> yeah. george, good morning to you. so, a new twist in this case involving dna evidence. in

a redacted filing, lawyers for brian kohberger, the man accused of stabbing four college students to death, say dna from three unidentified individuals was found under victim madison morgan's nails. the defense, claiming that independent testing they did, eliminated kohberger as one of those individuals. they say their client is innocent and argue the dna test results were inconclusive and therefore should be excluded at trial over concerns that it would mislead the jury. however, prosecutors have linked the former phd student to the crime, saying his dna was found on the knife sheath underneath morgan. this information came amid a flurry of filings as the defense tries to get the death penalty taken off the table. as part of their argument, they revealed the now 30 year old has autism spectrum disorder, which manifests in many of these highly prejudicial but completely involuntary mannerisms where he's seen sometimes subtly rocking his upper torso and exhibiting atypical eye contact. now, his lawyers say these mannerisms are

almost certain to occur during his trial, creating what they view as an unconscionable risk that he would be executed because of his disability rather than his culpability. robin. >> all right. our thanks to you. and now, another case. criminal charges against two people accused of stealing and reselling tickets to taylor swift's eras tour and other events making hundreds of thousands of dollars. rebecca jarvis is here with that story for us. good morning. rebecca. >> good morning to you, robin. yeah. remember how hard it was to get your hands on those eras tickets? they sold out almost immediately. and now two people are accused of stealing 900 of them and reselling them. and they're facing criminal charges for it. >> this morning, two people are accused of scheming to steal over $600,000 worth of some of the hottest tickets in town. >> they waited in line for like, six hours. >> know what just happened? >> mostly from taylor swift's eras tour. >> welcome to the eras tour.

>> according to the queens district attorney, tyrone rose and shemar simmons were arrested and charged with grand larceny, conspiracy and computer tampering. the pair allegedly exploited a loophole through an offshore vendor for the ticket resale website stubhub, where they intercepted already sold ticket urls, then resold them between the summers of 2022 and 2023. >> you can imagine how frustrating it would be to get there and realize that you don't have a ticket anymore. >> the duo allegedly targeted nba games and high profile. >> artists, including swift. >> the. other side, >> now follow my lead. >> an ed sheeran. >> there's always going to be people attempting to hack into systems, and so companies need to acquire the most professional, aggressive cybersecurity companies they can

shut down all westbound lanes near orinda for about an hour yesterday. and as you can see, that backed up traffic for miles. an suv was struck by gunfire. the 66 year old man behind the wheel managed to avoid getting seriously hurt. sky seven, found some people who just gave up and started to walk away from the highway. last tuesday, someone fired several shots on highway 24 in oakland, striking a driver in the legs. so hopefully we can keep a calm on the roads today. >> yeah, so far, so good. at least at 24. we do have metering lights on at the bay bridge as of 535 this morning, with a significant backup here. it's about a 20 minute delay to get to and through the tolls from the back of the line, and then you find yourself on the brakes through most of the span over to the city, even slow, and go on the richmond-san rafael bridge behind the toll plaza. this is pretty typical. we do have reports of an accident coming off the san mateo bridge on the san mateo side, sort of before the transition from 92 to north

level, they have fallen 800 feet down a snowy cliff saturday. high winds made it difficult to lift them to safety until tuesday. both are recovering, and not as good news. now we are going to turn to the rocky start for the planned fyre festival reboot. officials on the small mexican island are casting doubt, saying no one has contacted them about it. now creator billy mcfarland is firing back. will reeve is back with more. >> billy mcfarland spent four years in prison for scamming people. fyre festival was such a colossal disaster that it has become shorthand for colossal disasters, so who wants to try again? billy mcfarlane does. he says fyre festival 2 is coming a couple months from now. officials there say they don't really know what he's talking about. it began as one of the most anticipated music festivals of the 21st century with vip packages going for $12,000 and promising an event for the ages.
