>> outrage tonight, following comments governor newsom made when talking about trans athletes in sports. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. the comments were made in the first episode of his new podcast. >> abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has more on what the governor said and reaction to it. he's live with the story, zach. >> yeah. newsom's podcast guest was conservative activist charlie kirk, and the two talked about several different topics, like immigration and cost of living in the state. but it was newsom's comments on trans athletes that have been getting the most attention. >> what i mean, i'm in shock. >> we woke up really sickened and very disappointed. >> reaction thursday from both lgbtq community leaders and lawmakers over comments governor gavin newsom made in the first episode of his podcast, this is gavin newsom. newsom was asked by conservative activist charlie kirk about trans athletes. >> did you say no men and female sports? >> well, i think it's an issue

of fairness. i completely agree with you on that. so that's easy to call out the unfairness of that. there's also a humility and grace that, you know, that that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression. and the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that i have a hard time with as well. so both things i can hold in my hand. >> the comments sparked a strong response from the california legislative lgbtq caucus. >> harmful, hurtful and divisive language that just feeds into a narrative out there. that is something that is the trump and the republican party are obsessed with. >> gabriella antolovic, with the south bay's billy defrank lgbtq plus community center, said the comments were especially surprising because newsom has been an ally in the community. >> he was our big hero when he was in san francisco with the marrying the first same sex couple and very pro the lgbtq plus community. >> in the podcast. newsom also referred to that time marrying

same sex couples, and highlighted the fact that his and kirk's opinions differ on marriage equality, before he again brought up what he called the issue of fairness. lgbtq politics expert and menlo college political science professor melissa michaelson says newsom may be looking to expand his national profile, but adds he's not necessarily reaching out to republicans. >> because, in fact, support for transgender athletes has been declining among independents and democrats as well. and so while a few years ago we saw pretty dramatic partizan split on this issue, the most recent national surveys show that support for transgender athletes has been declining, even among democrats. >> looking ahead, the state lgbtq caucus said they just announced their priority legislation yesterday morning. it's about 17 bills they say have two main intentions. that's to protect against anti-lgbtq attacks and addressing everyday challenges in those communities. they're going to be heard in different committees this

spring. right now, live in the san jose bureau. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thank you. president trump's chaotic rollout of his tariff war is taking another turn. he's now temporarily delaying the tariffs on canada and mexico for a month. this comes after the president's phone call with mexico's president this morning, the 25% tariff on goods from mexico and canada will now go into effect april 2nd. tariffs remain on china. meanwhile, president trump will not sign an executive order today to dismantle the department of education, even though one has been drafted. he says he wants to give education back to the states. >> california's attorney general announced today another lawsuit against the trump administration. it's over the termination of grant funding for k through 12 teacher preparation programs. >> these are grants that our states counting on to train and prepare qualified educators. funds that are critical to addressing our state and nation's teacher shortage

crisis. >> at least $148 million is at stake for california alone. it's used for programs that create a pipeline for teachers serving rural and urban communities, and those teaching harder to fill positions like math and science. bonta says the programs have been shown to increase teacher retention rates, keeping them in the profession beyond the crucial first five years. the money has already been allocated by congress. seven other democratic led states join the lawsuit. >> new developments as budget cuts continue to hit local universities and the cal state university system hard. today, san francisco state announced plans to eliminate three sports teams in the fall to help close a giant budget gap. meanwhile, in the north bay, students and staff at sonoma state continue to push back against the elimination of all sports and dozens of faculty layoffs. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has the latest. >> the budget ax falling hard at san francisco state university, president lynn mahoney says three sports programs are being

cut. baseball, men's soccer, and women's indoor track and field. in order to save $1 million a year, 44 student athletes directly impacted by the move. >> this has got to hurt. >> yeah, it definitely hurts. >> it's tough news for interim athletic director brandon davis. >> it's heartbreaking. you know, there's student athletes, the baseball teams behind us. you know, the soccer student athletes, the track and field student athletes. all the student athletes. really. right. we're one big family. so it's really difficult to have to do this. >> president mahoney saying in a statement, i recognize this decision is particularly painful for the student athletes. it impacts their families and coaches, not to mention the countless alumni and supporters of these three teams. the move comes three months after san francisco state declared a fiscal emergency, triggered by declining enrollment and a budget deficit of 25 million. >> chop from the chop. >> sonoma state, facing its own budget crisis. employees marching on campus thursday carrying boxes representing 144

faculty and staff facing layoffs. all sports programs and some academic courses have also been cut. >> if these cuts are implemented, it will be the beginning of the end for sonoma state. we don't accept and we need to fight back. >> the administration here says discussions about the university's 20 2526 budget are continuing. but one thing that hasn't changed is the looming $24 million budget deficit. the university employees union is hoping for more time to find a solution. >> our view is, is that the csu, the csu in general, could cover our deficit and give us more time to work this problem and more effectively work it, and also get all the various different interest groups on campus involved in the process, as opposed to just being a top down decision. >> many students are feeling caught in the middle. >> i like thought about dropping out and i'm like, almost done. but i was like, they don't value education. they just don't value it. and the school is telling you that. stop from the top.

>> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> a santa rosa high school principal is on paid administrative leave a week after an on campus stabbing. the press democrat reports elsie allen high school principal gabe alba vera was not has not returned to campus since the february 25th stabbing. district officials are investigating what happened, in which a classroom fight ended with 115 year old boy stabbing another multiple times. the student was taken to the hospital, but is thankfully expected to make a full recovery. the victim's parent has criticized the principal because he was not contacted by high school administrators, leading to a frantic search for his son. >> a student journalist at stanford will not face charges from the santa clara county district attorney for his arrest last june. dylan gorrell was reporting on a pro-palestine protest on campus when he followed student protesters who barricaded themselves in the president's office. gorrell published news stories during the barricade and was wearing his press pass when he was

arrested alongside the protesters. the university had called for gorrell to be criminally prosecuted. his case, though, sparked outrage from first amendment advocates. >> meantime, at uc santa cruz, a pro-palestinian student activist says after she sued the university campus, police violated her rights to privacy and free speech. leila ershad was banned from campus for two weeks last year after a protest. she sued the university, saying the ban caused her to fail some of her classes. she says police issued a warrant for her phone while she was in her pajamas during an early morning fire drill, which she claims was retaliation for the lawsuit. >> a new study is highlighting a growing wealth gap in silicon valley. joint venture silicon valley put it together and found the median income is around $157,000. but the gains are not keeping up with inflation, which make it hard to keep up. also of note is the region has the second highest concentration of billionaires. only hong kong has

more. but with the haves, there are also a lot of have nots who are struggling. >> millionaires, billionaires in huge concentrations. but nearly a third of our population not self-sufficient. and what that means is that those households require a form of, of a form of assistance in order to get by. >> the region is seeing an influx of venture capital. $69 billion was pumped into silicon valley last year with $22 billion going toward artificial intelligence startups. >> in san jose. the mayor has a controversial new proposal that would require people who are unhoused to accept help or face arrest. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey takes a look at the plan that city officials hope will make a difference. >> when it comes to shelter for the unhoused in san jose. leaders believe if you build it, they must come. 1000 new and managed placements will open this year, and mayor matt mehan is proposing a plan to make people take advantage of them.

>> homelessness can't be a choice in our community when we're offering dignified alternatives. the best path forward is not the status quo. homelessness is a crisis. but if we don't get serious about accountability, it will become a constant. >> it's called the responsibility to shelter initiative, and is similar to a policy in place in san mateo county. when a new managed site opens, like the three story tiny home community off of brannan and monterey. people are offered residency. but if they refuse the services three times and continue to live in an encampment, they will be arrested. >> on a third refusal, we press charges for trespassing with the intention of getting the person into the county behavioral health court to figure out if there's some other set of services or accountability mechanism we can use to get people to make the choice, that has to be the choice. >> jodi botkin lives in this new community. she told me it changed her life, but she doesn't agree with the proposed policy. botkin says being indoors is not for everybody. >> for those for whom it's, as you say, a lifestyle issue, what

what do we do to help them choose a different life? >> there should be, you know, like you have camping grounds for families during the summer, maybe get a camping ground going. most of the people that want to stay out here, i think it's more or less they're scared. >> lousy service. but the city cycle. >> the press conference was met with frustration from unhoused advocates. sean cartwright maintains this is not the way. >> this is 100% criminalizing homelessness. this is if you do not do what i want you to do, i will criminal, i will put you in jail. and threats never work on unhoused people who already have a fear of legal issues, who already have a fear of arrest. they've already been traumatized. >> the city council will hear the proposal at their next meeting in san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> a judge has put fremont's ban on homeless encampments on hold. it was set to take effect a week from today. the ordinance bans camping on public property and would give the city the power to criminally charge those aiding and abetting a homeless camp. just yesterday we told you fremont's city council is

(♪) or took the stand today to testify against his former friend and colleague for civil rights abuses. according to the east bay times, eric rombo says he and morteza amiri spent years planning ways to inflict violence on residents. this included faking their reports to avoid suspicion and making sure their actions weren't caught on body cameras. rombo said the two would shoot people with rubber

bullets, encourage police dogs to bite people and make shrines to the abuse in their homes with photos of the people they'd hurt. he says some of their attacks on black men were motivated by skin color. >> oakland police have released disturbing video of a kidnaping. they're looking for both the suspect and the victim tonight. tuesday afternoon, a man grabbed a woman from outside a home on 98th avenue. he then forced her into his car, parked just a few feet away. other cars were zipping by the entire time, as you can see. investigators say the woman was screaming that she was being kidnaped. police have since found the car abandoned. but not the man or the woman. >> happening now. the alameda county board of supervisors is holding a special meeting. there could be a vote to finalize the sale of the oakland coliseum complex to the african american sports and entertainment group. abc seven news reporter anser hassan joins us live tonight with the latest answer.

>> good evening. this vote or this meeting comes almost two months after the county board of supervisors told their attorneys to finalize the deal with the african american sports and entertainment group. right now, the county board of supervisors is in closed session. they will announce their decision once they come out. now there is just one topic on the agenda that is the sale of the coliseum. there are three issues to be discussed. i want to highlight two of them. first, the county is asking the aa sag to hold a $100 million insurance policy that was not required of the oakland a's, and that was also not part of the initial sale. second, the oakland a's are asking that they be indemnified in a document separate from the sale, ray bobbitt leads the african american sports and entertainment group. he remains optimistic the deal will go through despite the added insurance requirement. >> we made an offer to kind of come somewhere in between. we have a concept that we think should satisfy that requirement, but that's definitely an unusual request. >> do you think that can delay

rain around the bay area today. >> yes. let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel. i even saw a nice rainbow out. >> yes. this morning i was greeted by that rainbow ama and dan. well, one of them. let me show you some live pictures right now. beautiful views. we are seeing plenty of sun from our mount tam, emeryville and santa cruz. still a few snow flurries from zephyr cove. here's a live view from mount tam cam, giving you a close up. four hundredths of an inch fell at sfo. ben loman picking up about a third of an inch. fremont 19 hundredths about 13 hundredths in half moon bay. so yes, we did have some showers around the bay area earlier today, and those snow showers over mount hamilton. southern california is getting in on the action. as you can see there. wet weather, some isolated thunderstorms developing as well. so taking you and showing you what it looked like earlier today. mount hamilton was a little bit of a wintry mix earlier this morning, and that's one of our higher peaks. so we expect it around this time of year. all is quiet right now. here's a look at your temperatures 49 at clear lake. most other areas are in the 50s

but 60 degrees in concord. here's a live view from santa cruz a little choppy waters overnight. cold areas of frost in the morning friday through the weekend. sunny and warmer weather coming your way and then rain is back next week. strongest storm is expected on wednesday. tomorrow morning you'll want to bring in your frost sensitive plants because we are expecting some frost, as an advisory has been issued for 1 to 9 a.m. tomorrow for the inland valleys and hills, temperatures dropping to the low 30s. higher elevations could see even lower temperatures. let's look at those numbers. mid 30s santa rosa, napa livermore tomorrow morning. so yeah you're going to feel that chill now tomorrow afternoon it's going to be breezy a lot of sun and milder weather. upper 50s to the upper 60s. we're going to look ahead as to what's going to happen. high pressure in control for a few days, including the weekend. and then monday night there's a system that is going to be heading towards us. could bring us some showers, but it's looking like it's going to be more southern california. so if
