morning just yet. we'll keep tracking it for you throughout the morning and looking live at our san jose camera here. 101 8-80 camera. pretty slow out there in the south bay. traffic is flowing freely in both directions. and if you take mass transit, good news for you. on this friday all trains are on time for ace, as well as bart and caltrain. >> san francisco launching a campaign against outdoor drug markets. one bus wedney night in the mission, another last week in jefferson square park led to dozens of arrests. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with public safety officials about the push at a town hall. >> our strategy is to go to where the problem is and try to prevent the problem from becoming a bigger problem. >> san francisco police chief bill scott, addressing how the department is tackling the city's drug problem at a public safety meeting in the marina district. the chief, with a clear message to those partaking in illegal drugs anywhere in the city. >> yeah, the message is real simple. you know, we're going to come after you if you're dealing. >> last week, in an overnight

raid at jefferson square park, san francisco police arrested 86 people, though only a handful were arrested for drug dealing. >> we did have a few people who were arrested for dealing drugs. the majority, though it was for misdemeanor crimes related to either illegally being in the park and or using drugs in the park. >> more than two dozen of those arrested were being sought by law enforcement. >> 31 of the 86 already had outstanding warrants, and they went across multiple counties. >> many of those we spoke with at this meeting are optimistic about what they've seen, but still concerned. >> i think that i am encouraged that all the branches of law enforcement are working together. >> the district attorney says charges have been filed against 11 of the 86 people arrested in the park, and the office is reviewing other citations that were issued. will you keep going after people in parks who are doing drugs or dealing drugs? >> absolutely. our job is not only to enforce the law, it's to

disrupt the behavior. and so we have to make sure that no matter where they are congregating, that we are staying on them. >> wednesday night, police were involved in another raid at 16th and mission. at least four arrests were made in that case as to when we could see additional massive raids, like the one we saw at jeffersonike square park. the chief told me those will continue to happen in cases when it's appropriate. in san francisco, j.r. stone abc seven news. >> a santa rosa high school principal is on paid administrative leave a week after an on campus stabbing. the press democrat reports elsie allen high school principal gabe rivera has not returned to campus since the incident on february 25th. a classroom fight ended with 115 year old boy stabbing another multiple times. the student was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. the victim's father has criticized the principal because he says he was not contacted by school administrators about the attack. >> today, the alameda county board of supervisors will continue negotiating the sale of

the oakland coliseum. it comes after they came back from a closed session yesterday with no deal. supervisor nate miley assured investors they want this deal to be done. >> and the county is negotiating. team says two documents need attention, including one dismissing a lawsuit filed by an environmental group, which has been resolved. the group buying the coliseum remains optimistic. >> we're too far. i mean, we've waited five years. why would somebody i mean, you know, we feel good about the commitment. and i appreciate supervisor miley speaking directly to investors. and you know, so that's important because the delay you know those kind of delays are tough. >> and the board will hold another session to vote on tuesday. unions representing state workers are pushing back against governor newsom's return to office mandate. the groups have filed unfair labor practice charges with the state board. one complaint calls the policy, quote, inexplicable and unnecessary. the governor's order would require state

workers to be back in the office four days per week by july 1st. the state is reviewing the charges and plans to respond through the employment relations board process. and in the east bay this morning, an event that has a lot of people talking. costco is about to open its newest store in the bay area, and this one is in brentwood, close to highway four. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live outside the store this morning. and lena, people are already there, hoping to be some of the first inside. >> that's right. happy costco grand opening day to all who celebrate. and happy friday to you, amanda. now, we did see a handful of shoppers line up here behind me about 20 minutes ago, but as you can see behind me, those shoppers have since been removed from the property by costco officials. they were told to move across the street. not totally clear why, but we have seen that happen at other costco grand openings. we are seeing quite a few cars here in the parking lot with people waiting

inside. there is still a lot of hype around this, but it's clear that costco does not want shoppers here waiting in line just yet. now, it was a much different story last night. i want to show you a little bit of video of what we saw out here. we did see quite a few more people already lined up waiting for it to open around 630. this is the third bay area costco to open since october 1st. it was napa, then pleasanton in november and now it is finally brentwood's turn. this is expected to be one of their largest warehouses in the state, and it's already prompting traffic warnings. the antioch police department is advising drivers in the area to expect traffic delays and plan for some extra travel time. we saw signs on the highway driving in, advising costco shoppers specifically to take the sand creek road exit, rather than lone tree way. remember, sand creek was recently extended from highway four to the street costco is on, so keep that in mind if you are heading over here this morning. now, this new warehouse here in brentwood at

lone tree plaza will launch with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the brentwood chamber of commerce. that's happening at 730, and doors open right here behind me to shoppers at 8:00. for now, reporting live in brentwood. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, what is the big get? i guess because why would people be lining up so early? do they get like a free membership, or is that. >> to be honest with you, what we have seen at other grand openings. a lot of people are here for the liquor. so a lot of the guys in line were telling me that they are here for some rare types of bourbon and whiskey things. along those lines, some special edition items that they bring in for grand openings. we've also seen designer handbags, designer sunglasses, purses, jackets. last time we saw like, a really fancy burberry coat that they don't always carry, obviously, but they bring those in for the grand opening to lure some of

rosa, sonoma, napa, we have temperatures well in the 30s right now. so it is going to be a frosty start, but the afternoon will feel mild. a live look from our east bay hills camera this morning showing you we have great visibility out there. we will have that cold start early on sunrise here just after 630 this morning, but it will be a sunny day. it looks beautiful. it will feel warmer. we're about ten degrees warmer today compared to yesterday. but these numbers, this is exactly where we should be for this time of the year. much of the week we've had cool temperatures for march. now, looking at the three day forecast, the weekend really looking beautiful. we have sunshine, mild weather heading into early sunday though. don't forget our clocks go forward one hour as daylight saving time does begin. it's also a good reminder this time of year. check those batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors. might want to get some fresh ones in there after the weekend though, rain is back in the forecast. we'll talk much more about the seven day coming up in just a few

businesses as president trump suspends tariffs on mexico and canada until april. this is the second time in just a month he's delayed these taxes. gloria, the back and forth has really sent the economy into a spin. >> it has been a roller coaster of a week for the economy, as the world has faced the whiplash of these tariff orders overnight. stock futures have been in positive territory. this after all three u.s. indices faced big sell offs yesterday. the dow closed down more than 500 points following the president's latest announcement that he was pausing tariffs on goods covered under the north american free trade agreement. some grocery store owners have told abc news they feel paralyzed by all these last minute changes. economists

continue to warn the tariffs will be paid by american businesses, who will pass that cost onto us consumers. >> we look at tariffs clearly. you need to start thinking about, okay, prices going up just at a time when people want prices going down. it does lead to uncertainty. >> trump himself has acknowledged that prices will go up on many items. he claims the long term benefit is worth it, though many economists say this could cause prices to remain high for many years. and we should note during this pause, canada's tariffs on u.s. goods will remain in place. amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. time now is 514. the bay area is entering a new era of homelessness policy and legal battles. in a first of its kind court order, a federal judge is siding with an unhoused woman in the north bay barring her city from sweeping her encampment. it's a significant ruling that could have implications as other communities lean into sweeps and camping bans. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren

martinez explains. >> from homeless problems to policies, the headlines extend to the whole bay area. as more cities adopt stricter ordinances, more people are taking legal action. >> when individuals decide to bring a case. you know, it's gotten pretty bad. these are not plaintiffs that are litigious. >> andrea henson represents evelyn alfred, a woman with disabilities who lives in a makeshift shelter and just sued the city of vallejo in february. a federal judge sided with alfred and halted the city from taking down her camp. henson says the court order is significant, the first time since last summer's supreme court decision allowing cities to criminalize homelessness, that a federal judge has checked that power. vallejo is appealing. >> the pendulum is swinging where we could see. and this is this is my hope is that we're able to demonstrate with evidence that there's nowhere for people to go. >> cities are still expanding restrictions on thursday. san

jose mayor matt mehan proposed arresting people who refuse multiple offers of shelter. the mayor arguing the status quo isn't working. >> one out of three people in this area who were offered housing refused to come indoors. >> law professor at uc berkeley laura riley said with more than 6000 unhoused people in san jose, there's not enough available housing or shelter. >> and so, practically speaking, if everyone who's unhoused is supposedly given notice that there is shelter available, inevitably some people would end up with criminal penalties. so it's not practical, and it's completely inhumane. >> in fremont, a coalition of civil rights advocates is suing to stop the city's new ban on camping and aiding homeless encampments. >> i think criminalizing it further has the risk of further distancing people from the reality that unhoused people

face every day. >> advocates and legal experts will hold a virtual press conference to discuss the fremont lawsuit on friday. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> alejo's is taking the first steps in a possible partnership with the solano county sheriff's office to help their police force. the department is dealing with a staffing emergency. they currently have 78 officers. they're supposed to have 137. the sheriff's office is offering to provide 17 people at a total cost of just over $11 million. a lot of details still need to be worked out, including how the city would pay for this. vallejo's police chief says the deal would make a huge difference in calls. call response. >> so my hope is that if and when we get sheriff assistance, that we would be able to cut response times in half. we'd be able to be more responsive towards the call volume that we currently have. >> vallejo city council decided to move forward. they need to figure out the funding and answer a few other questions. the plan is to have everything

together no later than march 25th. >> investigators in southern california arrested two men accused of using a san francisco based car sharing website to steal and resell cars. police in the city of corona say a woman thought she was buying a used car off craigslist. but despite her best efforts to avoid getting scammed, the car she bought was actually rented from the truro app, which has headquarters in san francisco. the scammers forged the title. >> she inspected the paperwork. she inspected the vehicle. everything seemed to be okay to her. they agreed upon a price. she gave the suspect $23,000 in cash. when she went to register, it, discovered that it was actually a rental car, that the subject who sold it to her did not own. >> the woman then found another ad, apparently from the same seller. she told police who arranged a meeting with them. police arrested two suspects they say had another turo rental car with forged documents. turo says the suspects teamed up with

you can see a lot of 30s on the board down to 35 in fairfield. good morning danville. similar story. quite chilly in parts of the north bay around the bay shoreline. low and mid 40s right now. so here's the frost advisory. officially, it's for the valleys of the north bay and the east bay. places like danville, livermore, walnut creek, napa, sonoma. these are areas that are starting out in the 30s this morning and just before the sun gets up here, we may dip as low as about 32 degrees. so the winter jacket you need that also take your sunglasses because today is going to be very sunny and it will be warmer than yesterday. finally this warming trend is here and temperatures for the afternoon back to average. this is where we should be this time of the year, but it's going to feel warm compared to the cool week we have had for the past couple of days. so highs today, going into the 60s for most of us away from the coast. your sunset this evening at 610. let's check in with gloria, see how the commute is going. >> yeah. you know, pretty quiet out there on the roads this morning. this is a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. barely any cars there on this friday morning. still early

though, of course. and we're going to get a live look at the bay bridge. definitely a lot busier out here. metering lights are still off right now. they usually turn on in just a few minutes, so we'll keep you updated on that. and this weekend the pittsburg center station, if you take bart, is going to be closed on saturday and sunday. they're installing new fare gates. so you can use the antioch or pittsburg bay point station as alternatives. and if you take vta busses or the light rail service, youe going to want a backup plan for commuting next week. bus drivers and train operators in silicon valley are set to go on strike starting this coming monday. their contract expired on monday and there has not been any progress on those negotiations. the union is asking for bigger pay increases. also, changes to conflict resolution policies. now workers will strike on or after 12:01 a.m. the union represents 1500 vta workers, including operators, maintenance staff and customer service workers. the vta has offered a total of 9% wage increase over a three year period. it would make

operators the second highest paid in the bay area and the fifth in the nation. representatives released a statement yesterday. they say we value our employees anve made a fair and reasonable offer. our appreciation extends to the riders we serve. while vta has tried to reach an agreement through conversations as late as this afternoon, there has been no progress. we need the union to return to the bargaining table. vta paratransit will operate as normal on monday, and updates on the strike and transit services will be available on the vta website, so you can check tt for the very latest. amanda. >> all right. gloria, thank you. governor gavin newsom is facing backlash over comments on transgender athletes made on the first episode of his new podcast. >> you say no men in female sports. >> well, i think it's an issue of fairness. i completely agree with you on that. so that's easy to call out the unfairness of that. there's also a humility and grace that you know, that that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression, and the way that people talk down to

vulnerable communities is an issue that i have a hard time with as well. so both things i can hold in my hand. in his podcast, this is gavin newsom, he spoke with conservative activist charlie kirk. the comments sparked a strong response from the state legislative lgbtq caucus, especially since newsom has been viewed as an ally in the community. >> harmful, hurtful and divisive language that just feeds into a narrative out there. that is something that is the trump and the republican party are obsessed with. >> he was our big hero when he was in san francisco with the marrying the first same sex couple. >> political analysts believe newsom is prepping to expand his national political profile, and they say the governor may be less vocal of his support, as support over transgender athletes has declined. even among democrats. >> budget cuts continue to hit local universities hard. san

francisco state plans to eliminate three sports teams in the fall to help close a giant budget gap, the university says. baseball, men's soccer and women's indoor track and field programs will be shut down in order to save up to $1 million a year, 44 student athletes will a be directly impacted by this move. it comes three months after san francisco state declared a fiscal emergency triggered by declining enrollment and a budget deficit of $25 million. >> you know, there's student athletes, the baseball teams behind us, you know, the soccer student athletes, the track and field student athletes, all the student athletes. really. right. we're one big family. so it's really difficult to have to do this. >> and a reminder that students and staff at sonoma state continue to push back against the elimination of all sports and dozens of faculty layoffs. protesters marched on campus thursday carrying boxes representing 144 faculty and staff facing layoffs. >> officials in marin county say a program that gives gift cards

to former meth users is a massive success. the pilot program has been around for two years now, at least once a week, participants with a history of drug use get tested if their test results come back clean. they are then rewarded a gift card to one of dozens of retailers, and this includes walmart, safeway and apple. >> if we think about what happens with stimulants or other drugs that people use, they are a very positively reinforcing substance, right? so if you can replace that reinforcement with a positive reinforcement that is healthy, then people are able to utilize that to be able to let go of the substance. >> so far, 94 people have taken part in marin county's program. it's one of several counties around the state participating in the pilot program, which is run through medi-cal. >> nearly all votes have been counted in this week's special election in san mateo county. measure a is passing with no problem 84% of the vote. this will give the san mateo county board of supervisors the power

know the bart station in pittsburg is going to be closed all weekend. crews are installing new fare gates at the station. the new gates are supposed to cut down on fare evasion and improve safety. trains will run through pittsburg center without making stops at that station. also, trains from antioch will depart earlier and arrive later than their published departure times to accommodate work on the pittsburg center platforms. >> and tonight brings oakland first fridays, and this week they are honoring women ahead of international women's day tomorrow. and the theme her story in the making celebrating women who shape oakland. the event will feature performances by women and pop ups from women led businesses. the event kicks off at 5 p.m. >> this morning. there is growing excitement in contra costa county for the bay area's newest costco store. people were lined up early this morning at the location in brentwood, just off highway four, not far from the sand creek road exit. that is where abc seven news reporter lena howland is live this morning. and lena, within the past 45 minutes, people who are lined up were told o

get out of there. up were told o >> yep, that's right reggie. unfortunately, we saw about 45 minutes ago costco asked these shoppers here behind me that have since come back to actually leave the property and join the other line across the street from here off the costco property. we have seen that happen at other costco grand openings. many of these folks sadly already had carts in their hands ready to go right around 5:00 when that happened. but many of these folks came back and they are ready to go. it's not clear how costco will be able to control that just yet. now, i do want to go to some video of what we saw out here last night. we did see quite a bit of quite a few more people lined up right around 630. they were also asked to move across the street. this is the third bay area costco to open since october 1st. it was napa, then pleasanton in november, and now it is finally brentwood's turn. this is expected to be one of their largest warehouses in the state. costco also has plans to open six new stores across the

country over the next nine days, and six more over the next six months. before shoppers were kicked off the property and sent across the street. we spoke to one shopper from oakley, who said he believes this long awaited mega store is a huge bonus for the community. >> costco is going to be awesome for the city of brentwood, but also for the city of oakley. we no longer have to drive to pittsburg and go through that traffic down there, and we can come up here and get all of our goods that we need. it's going to bring so much to the community of brentwood, and this city is going to grow from a mega store like this coming over here. >> and but the hype around this store is already prompting some traffic warnings. the antioch police department is advising drivers in the area to expect delays and plan for extra travel time. we saw signs on the highway driving in, advising costco shoppers to take the sand creek road exit, rather than lone tree way. sand creek was recently extended from highway four to the street costco is on,

labor department has just released the monthly jobs report. here we go. the labor market added 151,000 new jobs last month, which is fewer jobs than originally expected, but more than what we saw in january. the unemployment rate ticked up just slightly to 4.1%.
