not good. it's cold. it's okay. let's go, let's go. they didn't called us, and that happened inside the room. >> jesse trejo recorded this video clip february 25th, the day his 15 year old son was stabbed three times by another student on the elsie allen high school campus in santa rosa. >> i called. uh, the school. they didn't answer, and i leave a voicemail. and yeah, i didn't have no, no, no phone call back. >> trejo came to campus searching for his son after getting a call from a relative. he says administrators failed to contact the family about the stabbing. he demanded answers from the principal. >> so i started asking him about, you know, the uh- about my son. and then he said, oh, we don't know who's your son and i? and i told him, well, it was the one who got injured. and he was like, i told him why you guys didn't call me, like right away. it's been like an hour, five minutes, and i haven't had a phone call. >> trejo's son was in the hospital for ten days recovering from his wounds. he says the teen recently transferred to

elsie allen from lake county, and all emergency contact information had been filled out at the school. santa rosa city schools says principal gabe rivera was placed on administrative leave the day after the stabbing. in a statement, the school district said during our investigation, we have learned the staff took swift action to ensure the safety of everyone on campus and we applaud them for that. however, we have also learned that some things may not have been done properly. although this incident contributed to our decision. other factors played a role in our decision to place mr. rivera on administrative leave. a small group supporting principal rivera gathered outside district offices friday, demanding answers on why he was removed after the stabbing. santa rosa police say a 15 year old was arrested for the stabbing and booked into juvenile hall on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon on school grounds. jesse trejo has no comment about the principal's leave. for now, he's focusing on his son's recovery.sing on his son's >> oh, what i want is a, you

know, my son to be to be okay and get better. >> the district says an interim principal is now in charge at the school. in santa rosa. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> another state school is cutting sports teams. we learned today that cal poly san luis obispo is cutting both its men's and women's swimming and diving teams. quote effective immediately. that affects 58 athletes. the school says they will keep any existing scholarships. cal poly says no other sports at this time are at risk of being discontinued. now, just yesterday, san francisco state announced plans to eliminate men's baseball mes soccer along with women's indoor track and field, and sonoma state students are fighting a decision to eliminate all athletics. >> on uc berkeley's campus today and other schools. thousands join rallies to stand up for science. >> the science can only be done with the appropriate federal funding. >> i think that might be professor jennifer doudna,

the crispr woman who won the nobel prize. this comes at a time in which the trump administration aims to cut back on federal funding, including critical medical research and treatments. we'll have more on this story on abc seven news at five and six. >> the stock market closed higher today, boosted by remarks from the head of the federal reserve that the economy remains in good shape. the dow jones up 222 points. nasdaq up nearly 127. s&p 500 rose 31. but the s&p posted its biggest weekly loss in six months now. today's jobs report shows 151,000 new jobs last month. that is fewer than expected, but it is more than january. the unemployment rate ticked up just a little bit to 4.1%. analysts believe we will not see any impacts from the trump administration's mass layoffs until later in the spring. california attorney general rob bonta says he's already seeing the impact at the state level, claiming a big

spike in unemployment claims right after the layoffs. bonta, part of a coalition of attorneys general suing the federal government to stop the job cuts, calling them illegal. >> so it's imperfect information, but we do make 149% comment around the increase. just to make it clear that there are spikes in in the request for unemployment insurance. that's a harm to us. that's a harm to california. >> bonta says the state saw 1600 claims filed last month. that is 149% higher than february of 2024. california is seeking a temporary restraining order to the practice and to reinstate those federal workers who've lost their jobs. >> more contradicting remarks from president trump regarding tariffs. a day after announcing he would delay tariffs for a month on canada and mexico today, trump said he may impose a 250% tariff on milk from canada to match canadian tariffs

of the many in san jose banking on nvidia's gtc. ai conference set to kick off march 17th. the conference brings together top talent and companies to see the latest in ai and accelerated computing, all of it happening at the mcenery convention center. a short walk away from fans businesses. >> downtown san jose was on a huge roll pre-pandemic. you had wwdc out here. i think facebook had their f8 conference out here and there was momentum building, and that all kind of stopped a little bit after the pandemic, as everyone knows. but it felt like those old days again when nvidia came to town. >> now, fan and city leaders are hoping for a repeat. >> our goal is to make downtown san jose truly the urban center for all of silicon valley, a destination. >> one step announced friday the activation of plaza de cesar chavez in downtown san jose as a spot to be taken over by gtc. >> will be at the convention center, but also with the tech museum here in cesar chavez park, with a night market here with 20 local vendors. we're going to have bands. we are

the station will be closed all weekend so bart can install new faregates to prevent people from jumping the gate and avoid paying fares. trans trains will continue to run through the station, but not stop. a free shuttle will take passengers from the pittsburg bay point station to the pittsburg center station on monday. vta workers could go on strike in the south bay. negotiations have broken down between management and the union, representing 1500 public transit operators, maintenance staff and customer service workers. vta is offering a 9% wage increase over three years with no service cuts. the union wants to double that amount. >> with a wage increase at this level. >> or anything close to it would be service cuts throughout our system and the likely elimination of positions across vta. this is not a direction that we are willing to go. >> if a strike happens on monday, there will be no bus service or light rail service in santa clara county. vta paratransit will not be

swindling their customers out of thousands of dollars, and they're not actually fixing the appliances, right? >> abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow spoke with one victim, who said he thought he called the right company. melanie, this is so sad. >> i know. unfortunately, he didn't. and this is happening to a bunch of customers. box appliance has been in the business for decades, but a few months ago noticed an uptick in

calls from complaining customers specifically about refrigerator repairs. turns out they were dealing with somebody pretending to be boxed appliance. now, the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating. >> you know. >> in november, ben phillips was in need of a fix before his thanksgiving feast. this 22 year old sub-zero refrigerator had a leak. >> get the refrigerator done and make my wife happy. >> he had used box appliance back in 2019 for a repair, but this time when he called and a technician came out, not only was he upsold on replacing the compressor, but the leak remained despite multiple visits. >> she was angry. >> and that was just the start. phillips spent close to $4,000 attempting to fix this refrigerator he called box appliance again. >> i went back online and i go, oh, there's two box appliances. i go, i've been taken here. >> this time, an actual box appliance technician came out and told phillips his refrigerator couldn't be repaired. >> he goes, yeah, we wouldn't have even started on it. and i go, that would have saved me.

>> box appliance is aware that someone is pretending to be them. >> it's really hard explaining to these customers that they were swindled. basically. >> it all comes down to google search results. box appliance president ryan burgo. >> these other companies purchased domain names that are very similar to us. they use sponsored ads to move them up higher in the list of google. >> customers call and the other company books the appointments. >> my technicians all show up in vans with sub-zero los on them. box appliance. >> but those other technicians are showing up in unmarked vehicles. >> we've seen pictures where some of these technicians actually have box appliance on a shirt that they had made, so they're doing everything they can. maybe they're doing some legit service work, but i don't know that for sure. all i hear about is when it goes bad. >> burgo and his team have attempted to get the other sites taken down. >> it's like playing whack a mole. we take one down and another one goes right back up. >> some victims have filed reports with law enforcement.

the santa clara county sheriff's office is one of the agencies now investigating. >> we're trying to track down who is posting these fake sites. we're seeing this not only in the bay area, but across the state. >> in the meantime, box appliances warning customers to make sure they're on the right site, not the wrong ones. >> they would have like box appliances with an s at the end. dot co or box dash appliance. >> and calling the correct number. as for ben phillips, he's created his own temporary solution a shower pan under the refrigerator and some paper towels to collect the water. >> so yeah, i replace that anywhere from 2 to 3 times a day. so yeah, i just stuff it in there like that and it'll be ready to be replaced tonight. >> a soggy situation leaving phillips feeling like he got hosed. >> i can't believe i fell for it. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office says they want to hear from any other victims

santa fe home. authorities holding a press conference this afternoon. >> it is unprecedented for the office of the medical investigator to make public statements about death investigations. however, the circumstances surrounding these two deaths require accurate dissemination of important information. >> the couple's mysterious deaths, prompting questions of when and how. authorities confirming betsy hackman died of hantavirus days before gene hackman died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease with alzheimer's disease around february 18th. >> autopsy examination and a full body postmortem ct examination demonstrated no acute findings of internal or external trauma. >> authorities conducting autopsies and toxicology reports. the new mexico gas company confirmed extensive testing at the home. no traces of carbon monoxide and a minuscule gas leak in the stove below a lethal amount.

cousin. their 1993 album sons of soul reached double platinum. the group had five number one hits as a producer. wiggins helped grow the career of several artists, including zendaya, her, kehlani, and destiny's child. wiggins died of bladder cancer. he was 64 years old. >> tonight, a peek at what is considered the premier economic policy document for the city of oakland. abc seven news reporter tim johns spoke with some of the people behind the report and tells us with a looming budget crisis, this year's findings are more important than ever. >> oakland city council members getting a preview friday of the city's economic indicators report. the report is published annually by the oakland chamber of commerce, and often serves as a guide for city lawmakers. >> generally, we believe that good data leads to good decision making. >> barbara leslie is the chamber of commerce president. she says this year's report has some sobering revelations, based in part on survey results. perhaps

campus at mnc inspiring success, formerly known as mission neighborhood centers. the organization has more than a dozen of these centers in san francisco. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has a sneak peek at the newest one. >> children learn and play at this new daycare center that just opened in san francisco's mission district.

>> i love it because they're teaching my kids spanish and how to socialize with other kids.how and, you know, they give them all the things to learn, like the basic things to learn. >> tina calmes has two children who go to the new center while she works as a janitor nearby. it's a huge help in the bay area, where housing costs are astronomical and not to mention daycare fees. >> i am a low income family and i don't have enough cash to do that, so it helps me great much. >> the nonprofit mnc inspiring success opened the center about three weeks ago, which has a capacity to serve 75 children from the age of three months to five years old. they converted a former police substation into this. it was a $15 million project made possible by various funding sources, including federal and state money. >> many of our families, they work in domestic work. our janitors work in the restaurants around the community here. and so having this opportunity to
