new developments with the suspects. and a disturbing case out of the east bay where a dog was kicked and sent airborne, then standing up for science. bay area residents taking on the trump administration's attempt to cut hundreds of millions of dollars of research funding, and they get a nobel assist. good morning everybody. it's saturday, march 8th. let's get right to lisa with the forecast. good morning. >> good morning. yeah looking at a nice start to the day. although it's chilly it's clear we're looking at temperatures dropping off in the 30s in parts of our inland valleys. live doppler seven. they're showing you the storm track. well to the north as high pressure is in control. 37 danville. livermore. 38 in gilroy, with temperatures down to 35 in sonoma. 39 novato and point reyes. so compared to yesterday, 2 to 4 degrees cooler from san francisco to the san carlos airport. but as we go through the 9:00 hour, we're all in the 50s. it's sunny and then by about 1030, 11:00, mid to upper 50s, 2:00. we're well into

the mid 60s, even some upper 60s coming into play this afternoon. so temperatures near average. a beautiful day ahead. the sun coming up at 630. don't forget, we set our clocks ahead tonight for that later. sunrise tomorrow. steph. >> all right lisa thank you. well, fremont recently passed one of the toughest and most controversial ordinances to deal with homelessness. it bans camping in public spaces. and as we reported earlier this week, the city is now being sued over this ordinance. now, we're hearing from the groups behind the lawsuit. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has the new developments. >> what we're doing here, it already has national attention. >> a coalition of homeless advocates are suing the city of fremont. the goal to stop the city's new ban on camping and aiding homeless encampments. >> there's approximately 75 cities in the state of california that are either considering, or have already enacted ordinances similar.

>> attorney anthony prince with california homeless union legal experts and other plaintiffs held a virtual press conference on friday evening. >> we will go forward with our lawsuit, and we will go forward with our motion to seek a restraining order, and that will then be before the court. >> the 62 page lawsuit includes roughly 25 unions from up and down the state. the suit points out, in the ordinance to camp is defined so broadly that it includes not only placing, pitching or occupying tents, but the act of living outdoors. >> i bring out tents to people and blankets. so in many places in in many places, that's becoming illegal. >> robbie neilsons organization is one of the plaintiffs in the case based in the north bay. poulsen is an unhoused advocate and said housing insecurity has always affected him personally. in 2023, he had a court victory against the city of san rafael to stop the planned eviction of

campers. he said fremont's ordinance is a public health emergency. >> fundamentally, when you're unhoused, that's about the laws that protect you. that's the laws that protect the human body. because when you're unhoused, that's what you really have, is you're just your humanity. and you're not protected by ownership of property. >> a spokesperson with the city of fremont says they cannot comment on pending litigation. city council will review changes to the ordinance on march 18th. in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> we're following new developments involving two women accused in a dog kicking incident in pittsburg yesterday. the contra costa county district attorney's office announced both of them are being charged with cruelty to an animal. they were arrested late last week in oakland after an extensive search. police launched their investigation after this video surfaced of the february 19th incident. you see the surveillance video showing the

two women confronting their neighbor and the three clearly getting into an argument here. police say one of the women pulled out a fake gun, causing the homeowner to back away and pick up one of the dogs with him. you see him here? investigators say one of the women then told the other to kick the other dog, which she did, sending that dog airborne. disturbing to see that. well, the national women's soccer league says it has opened an investigation of bay fc's coaching staff. according to the chronicle, two former players prompted the investigation. describing the culture under head coach albertin montoya as toxic. he's also been accused of bullying. the accusations come after bay fc's head scout resigned last month after abuse allegations from when he was the coach at the university of oregon. an abuse and misconduct scandal rocked the nwsl in 2021, leading to numerous coaches resigning or being fired. well,

the corruption probe that's led to the indictment of former oakland mayor xiang tao has now spread to san leandro. our media partners at the bay area news group report federal officials have asked the city to hand over numerous records that name the duong family. that family is at the center of this entire investigation of a pay to play scheme in san leandro, linked to the case, became public in january, when the home of then city council member brian azevedo was raided. azevedo did go on a trip to vietnam in 2023 that was sponsored by david duong, and he has since refused to comment on the fbi investigation in the south bay. now, public transit in silicon valley could shut down on monday if vta workers go forward with a planned strike. negotiations have broken down between management and the union, representing 1500 public transit operators, maintenance staff and customer service workers. vta is

offering a 9% wage increase over three years with no service cuts. the union wants double that amount. should workers walk out there will there will be no bus or light rail service in santa clara county. among other things, and vta paratransit will not be impacted. we're told the trump administration has canceled $400 million in grants to columbia university in new york city. in a statement, the white house says the university has not been doing enough to fight harassment of jewish people on campus. columbia was just one of the universities nationwide where pro-palestinian rallies took place following the hamas terror attack on israel back in october of 2023. education secretary linda mcmahon says she's met with the university's interim president and called that chat productive. meanwhile, former vice president kamala harris may be getting closer to deciding if she will run for california governor.

sources close to harris say she will make that decision by the end of the summer, a year before the state's open primary in june of 2026. current lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis already announced her candidacy. candidacy that is so has republican riverside county sheriff chad bianco. others considering a run are former assemblyman antonio villaraigosa and former congresswoman katie porter. a poll last month shows harris leading the pack. the california public employees retirement system is ignoring governor newsom's order that state employees have to return to office four days a week. calpers is telling its workers the agency will continue its policy that allows two days of remote work a week, starting july 1st. state employees and other departments will be expected to work in person for four out of five days. unions are now challenging the governor's order. last night, san francisco mayor daniel lurie

headed to north beach to celebrate first fridays. he toured the area with supervisor danny souder, meeting small business owners along the way. as you see here on the first friday of each month. more than a dozen north beach galleries, museums, bars and restaurants will be staying open late. they host special events to showcase art collections, along with musicians to entertain crowds. the next one is on april 4th across the bay. there was a big turnout for first friday's kickoff event in oakland. music took center stage at the downtown arts and community festival, and it's back along telegraph avenue between 22nd and 27th streets, just in time for international women's month. organizers say the event honors and celebrates the women who inspire and shape the community. this month, it's called her story in the making and featured women creators and entrepreneurs. all right, let's get you outside. good morning lisa.

were released just yesterday. the actor and his wife were found dead in their new mexico home last week. carbon monoxide poisoning had been ruled out, but the deaths still remained a mystery. abc news reporter jacqueline lee has the latest. >> new details in the deaths of actor gene hackman and his wife, after their slightly mummified bodies were found inside their santa fe home. authorities holding a press conference this afternoon. >> it is unprecedented for the office of the medical investigator to make public statements about death investigations. however, the circumstances surrounding these two deaths require accurate dissemination of important information. >> the couple's mysterious deaths, prompting questions of when and how. authorities confirming betsy hackman died of hantavirus days before. gene hackman died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease with alzheimer's disease around february 18th. >> autopsy, examination and a full body postmortem ct

examination demonstrated no acute findings of internal or external trauma. >> authorities conducting autopsies and toxicology reports. the new mexico gas company confirmed extensive testing at the home. no traces of carbon monoxide and a minuscule gas leak in the stove below a lethal amount. authorities also clarifying the dog, initially identified as one of the german shepherds, now identified as an australian kelpie mix. there are two other german shepherds survived. authorities are also analyzing the couple's cell phones and monthly planner. hackman was recently honored at the 97th academy awards ceremony for his contributions to the film industry. jacqueline lee, abc news, los angeles. >> well, tributes are pouring in to honor oakland music great d'wayne wiggins, who helped establish the r&b band tony tony tone. he passed away from bladder cancer. wiggins 1993 album sons of soul reached

double platinum status, and he also inspired other music stars, including zendaya, her and destiny's child. wiggins was 64, a bay area appliance repair company is sending out a warning claiming someone is impersonating them, swindling their customers out of thousands of dollars and not actually fixing their appliances. and the seven on your side investigation. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow spoke with one victim, who said he thought he called the right company but ended up with repair despair. yeah. >> in november, ben phillips was in need of a fix before his thanksgiving feast. this 22 year old sub-zero refrigerator had a leak. >> get the refrigerator done and make my wife happy. >> he had used box appliance back in 2019 for repair, but this time when he called and a technician came out, not only was he upsold on replacing the compressor, but the leak remained despite multiple visits. >> he was angry. >> and that was just the start.

phillips spent close to $4,000 attempting to fix this refrigerator he called box appliance again. >> i went back online and i go, oh, there's two box appliances. i go, i've been taken here. >> this time, an actual box appliance technician came out and told phillips his refrigerator couldn't be repaired. >> he goes, yeah, we wouldn't have even started on it. and i go, that would have saved me. >> box appliance is aware that someone is pretending to be them. >> it's really hard explaining to these customers that they were swindled. basically. >> it all comes down to google search results. box. appliance president ryan bourgault. >> these other companies purchased domain names that are very similar to us. they use sponsored ads to move them up higher in the list of google. >> customers call and the other company books the appointments. >> my technicians all show up in vans with sub-zero logos on them. box appliance. >> but those other technicians are showing up in unmarked vehicles. >> we've seen pictures where some of these technicians actually have box appliance on a

shirt that they had made, so they're doing everything they can. maybe they're doing some legit service work, but i don't know that for sure. all i hear about is when it goes bad. >> bourgault and his team have attempted to get the other sites taken down. >> it's like playing whack a mole. we take one down and another one goes right back up. >> some victims have filed reports with law enforcement. the santa clara county sheriff's office is one of the agencies now investigating. >> we're trying to track down who is posting these fake sites. we're seeing this not only in the bay area, but across the state. >> in the meantime, box appliances warning customers to make sure they're on the right site, not the wrong ones. >> they would have like box appliances with an s at the end. dot co or box dash appliance. >> and calling the correct number. as for ben phillips, he's created his own temporary solution a shower pan under the refrigerator and some paper towels to collect the water. >> so yeah, i replace that

followed a festive ceremony where mayor daniel lurie raised the flag of ireland from his balcony. and of course, it's an annual tradition. the first time mayor lori presided over this particular celebration. friday was the kickoff to a week of celebrations, culminating with the saint patrick's day parade on saturday, march 15th. well, dozens of volunteers with green thumbs got their hands dirty to improve an east bay community. those handy folks helped plant more than two dozen new trees at bidwell park in hayward. members of the student conservation association joined amazon employees to take part in yesterday's tree planting. the new tree canopy will do wonders for what's to come for the south hayward neighborhood. >> this is a great space to be able to provide a new community center for the community, and also to provide like a great place to play outside, right? and enjoy the outside.

>> 25 trees in total were planted in this park. city officials say it will not only improve the look of the park, but the health of the community. certainly not a bad weekend to get some planning done. lease, right. how's it shaping up? >> yeah, it's beautiful out there. our last sunrise at 630 or close to the six 30 hour this morning. as we get into that later sunrise tomorrow, we lose an hour of sleep. but, yeah, that sun setting at 711 on sunday, 610 tonight. and as we look at live doppler seven big ridge of high pressure allowing for tons of sun over the bay area today. starting out pretty chilly though. we are in the 30s here from santa rosa and sonoma. a little bit of stratus right along the coast there, but otherwise it's cold. 37 danville and livermore with 40 in fremont and 37 in gilroy. so our headlines this weekend, mild and soaked in sun, with the changes coming as we get into tomorrow.

with that later sunrise and sunset. and then by the middle of next week, wet weather returns. we're looking at a weak atmospheric river headed our way on wednesday. so sunny skies as we get through your saturday into sunday. a few high clouds, but still a nice looking day out there. and then into monday you'll notice that the clouds do thicken up. we stay dry. this system is going to head into southern california, the first system, so taking you into monday night and tuesday where southern california gets wet. and then by wednesday early in the morning this is queuing up, bringing a very rainy and windy day on wednesday. looks like the pattern wants to keep us wet into thursday and potentially on friday. so we're looking at a level two system on wednesday and then into next week. could even see a few showers next weekend. here's a look at rainfall estimates so far, anywhere from about three quarters of an inch to an inch in san francisco and oakland. and you can see that most of the

activity is in the pacific northwest. but enough getting down to the bay area. that is certainly a respectable system there. on wednesday. snowfall looks to be pretty good here, anywhere from about two to perhaps three feet around kirkwood. this takes us into wednesday and thursday, so looking like good bonus snow maker there. highs today ranging from the low 60s. san francisco 65 in oakland, a beautiful day in fremont with 68 for you, as well as san jose, 67. in santa rosa we saw 70 yesterday. upper 50s return for the coast here, half moon bay. and remember a good idea always as you get into the time change to change the batteries in your smoke detector. and another look at the sun set today 610 and then into tomorrow 711 and then by the time we hit may 1st, we've got a later sunrise at 8:00. so beautiful. for the next couple of days, the accuweather seven day forecast looking at the dry

abc seven mornings live. >> good morning everybody. thank you for joining us. this half hour. we begin with the weather and it's shaping up to be a nice weekend. >> yeah it's going to be beautiful out there especially today a lot of sunshine, temperatures near average. but starting out on the cool side with that. 37 in danville and livermore, 44 sfo closer to the coast. a little bit of fog. we're 35 in sonoma and 37 there out towards vacaville. so a couple degrees cooler from novato to san francisco. 9:00 we're sunny and you'll see temperatures right around 50 degrees. we're in the mid 50s by about 1030, 2:00, mid to upper 60s in some locations. so almost

a repeat performance of yesterday. so very nice out there. we'll look for another chilly night tonight before we do it all again. some high clouds on sunday, but we are bringing in our storm impact scale for several days into next week. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. the president is sending mixed messages about the administration's stance on the war in ukraine and its relationship with both ukraine and russia. >> we're doing very well with russia, but right now they're bombing the hell out of ukraine and ukraine. i'm i'm finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with ukraine in terms of getting a final settlement. it may be easier dealing with russia, which is surprising because they have all the cards. ukraine has to get on the ball and get a job done. >> mr. trump's comments came after a post on truth social, where he threatened to impose expanded large scale sanctions and tariffs on russia until it reaches a peace agreement with ukraine. he added both sides

need to, quote, get to the table right now before it's too late. his comments come a week after that tense oval office exchange with ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. well, a little over a day after pausing the 25% tariffs on canada and mexico, president trump has now threatened 250% tariffs on canadian lumber and dairy. the stock market and american businesses responding to the potential tariff threats. abc's johny fernandez has the latest on that. >> president trump furthering his trade war threatening 250% tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber. >> canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs for lumber and for dairy products. >> just a day earlier, the president paused tariffs to mexico and canada. trump says the tariffs will create manufacturing jobs in america. >> we're going to bring back our business into this country. we need it from a job standpoint.

>> and consumers and business owners bracing for the impact on their wallets. economists say tariffs on canadian lumber will impact home buyers and construction firms across the country, and likely increase home prices. >> it's hard on homebuilders. it's hard on prospective home buyers. it isn't good for anybody. >> the latest jobs report came in slightly below expectations. the labor department reporting 151,000 new jobs were added to the workforce last month. the report giving the stock market a boost on friday. investors hoping the slower hiring will help to bring down inflation. overall, the s&p 500 having its worst week since september because of uncertainty with tariffs. despite the turbulence, federal reserve chair jerome powell says the economy is in a good place for now. >> the path to sustainably returning inflation to our target has been bumpy, and we expect that to continue. >> johny fernandez, abc news, new york.

>> doge is offering the department of health and human services workers severance packages if they voluntarily quit. many workers there can get up to $25,000 just for quitting. older workers are being offered early retirement packages, and those workers will have until next friday to make their final decision. workers in the education and social security administration are being offered similar packages as well. now, in response to the trump administration's decision to cut back on federal research funding, millions across the country and here in the bay area, ask where would we be without science? abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey takes us to three bay area cities where citizens are standing up for science. >> from thousands in berkeley. >> there are no kings or dictators in science. >> to hundreds in palo alto. >> we need sanity, and we need science in our country. >> at the steps of san francisco

work being done at bay area universities like cal and stanford research with life saving implications without it. >> very, very scary. not just my life, but everyone's lives. >> i myself am a young breast cancer survivor. the treatment that i had is things that were developed in universities decades ago, research that was funded by the federal government. so there's nobody in america whose life hasn't been positively changed by the research that our universities do. >> a federal judge has temporarily blocked the drastic nih funding cuts. but until the legal battle ends, the fight in the community continues. >> what do we trust to save our lives? >> science. >> what do we need to shape our future? >> science in the south bay dustin dorsey. abc seven news. >> well, california attorney general rob bonta says he's already seeing the impact at the state level, claiming a big spike in unemployment claims after a wave of federal layoffs. bonta is part of a coalition of

attorney generals who are suing the federal government to stop the job cuts, calling them illegal. >> so it's imperfect information, but we do make 149% comment around the increase. just to make it clear that there are spikes in in the request for unemployment insurance. that's a harm to us. that's a harm to california. >> bonta says the state saw 1600 claims filed last month, and that's a 149% increase compared to february 2020. for now, california is seeking a temporary restraining order to the practice and to reinstate those federal workers who have lost their jobs. well, happening today a celebration for a new early education campus at mnc inspiring success, formerly known as mission neighborhood centers. the organization has more than a dozen of these centers here in san francisco. abc seven news reporter gloria
