>> right now at six, fremont passed one of the toughest ordinances around to crack down on homeless camps. how advocates. advocacy groups are now pushing back. then new developments with the suspects in a disturbing case out of the east bay, where a dog was kicked and sent airborne and standing up for science bay area residents taking on the trump administration's attempt to cut hundreds of millions of dollars of research funding. and they get a noble assist. good morning everybody. it's saturday, march 8th. we'll get right to your forecast. and it's looking like a beautiful weekend. >> yeah, it really was nice yesterday 70 santa rosa. we have more 60s today. starting out very chilly though. and you can see from live doppler seven the storm track. well to the north. we are in the clear and from mount tam a little bit of stratus there, but a beautiful sunrise at 630. it's 47. san francisco 41. in oakland, 39 redwood city. and from our sutro tower camera, we have a lot of

30s there, from napa to fairfield, below freezing 35 in livermore. santa rosa is 36. and as we look at our 24 hour temperature change, it's been just about as cold the last couple of mornings. we will look for the numbers to really respond to that sun. so 9:00 we're in the 50s and 1030 11 mid 50s, 2:00 already mid 60s near average in the upper 60s, a lot of sun today. we'll add in a few high clouds tonight. and remember, we lose that hour of sleep and our sunrise tomorrow is at 729. stephanie. >> all right lisa, thank you. fremont recently passed one of the most toughest and controversial ordinances to deal with homelessness. it bans camping in public spaces. and as we reported earlier this week, the city is now being sued over this ordinance. we're hearing from the groups behind the lawsuit. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has the latest. >> on. >> what we're doing here. it

already has national attention. >> a coalition of homeless advocates are suing the city of fremont. the goal to stop the city's new ban on camping and aiding homeless encampments. >> there's approximately 75 cities in the state of california that are either considering or have already enacted ordinances. >> similar attorney anthony prince with california homeless union legal experts and other plaintiffs held a virtual press conference on friday evening. >> we will go forward with our lawsuit, and we will go forward with our motion to seek a restraining order, and that will then be before the court. >> the 62 page lawsuit includes roughly 25 unions from up and down the state. the suit points out, in the ordinance to camp is defined so broadly that it includes not only placing, pitching or occupying tents, but the act of living outdoors. >> i bring out tents to people and blankets. so in many places in in many places, that's

becoming illegal. >> robbie poulson's organization is one of the plaintiffs in the case based in the north bay. poulson is an unhoused advocate and said housing insecurity has always affected him personally. in 2023, he had a court victory against the city of san rafael to stop the planned eviction of campers. he said. fremont's ordinance is a public health emergency. >> fundamentally, when you're unhoused, that's about the laws that protect you. that's the laws that protect the human body. because when you're unhoused, that's what you really have, is you're just your humanity. and you're not protected by ownership of property. >> a spokesperson with the city of fremont says they cannot comment on pending litigation. city council will review changes to the ordinance on march 18th in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> we're following new developments involving two women accused in a dog kicking incident in pittsburg yesterday,

the contra costa county district attorney's office announced both of them are being charged with cruelty to an animal. they were arrested late last week in oakland after an extensive search. and i'll warn you, the video you're about to see may be disturbing. police launched their investigation after this video surfaced on february 19th. this video shows the two women confronting their neighbor and the three clearly getting into an argument. police say one of the women pulled out a fake gun, causing the homeowner to back away and pick up one of the dogs with him. investigators say one of the women then told the owner to kick the other dog as you just saw, which she did, sending that dog airborne. very disturbing. well, the national women's soccer league says it has opened an investigation of bay fc's coaching staff. according to the chronicle, two former players prompted this investigation. describing the culture under head coach albertin montoya as toxic. he's also been accused of bullying. the accusations come after bay

fc head scout. resigned last month after abuse allegations from when he was the coach at u. university of oregon. that is an abuse and misconduct scandal that rocked the nwsl in 2021, leading to numerous coaches resigning or being fired. in the east bay now, the corruption probe that's led to the indictment of former oakland mayor xiang tao has now spread to san leandro. our media partners at the bay area news group report federal officials have asked the city to hand over numerous records that name the duong family. the family is at the center of the investigation of a pay to play scheme. san leandro is linked to the case became public in january, when the home of city council member brian azevedo was raided as a veto, did go on to a trip in vietnam back in 2023 that was sponsored by david duong, and he has since refused to comment on the fbi investigation in the

south bay. public transit in silicon valley could shut down on monday if vta workers go forward with a strike. negotiations have broken down between management and the union, representing 1500 public transit operators, maintenance staff and customer service workers. vta is offering a 9% wage increase over three years with no service cuts. the union wants to double that. should workers walk out. there will be no bus or light rail service in santa clara county, but vta paratransit will not be impacted. the trump administration has canceled $400 million in grants to columbia university in new york city. in a statement, the white house says the university has not been doing enough to fight harassment of jewish people on campus. columbia was just one of the universities nationwide where pro-palestinian rallies took place following the hamas terror attack on israel back in october of 2023. education secretary

linda mcmahon says she's met with the university's interim president and called that chat productive. former vice president kamala harris may be getting closer to deciding if she will run for governor of california. now, sources close to harris say she will make a decision by the end of this summer, a year before the state's open primary in june of 2026. current lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis already announced her candidacy. so has republican riverside county sheriff chad bianco. others considering a run are former assemblyman antonio villaraigosa and former congresswoman katie porter. a poll last month shows harris leading the pack. the california public employees retirement system is ignoring governor newsom's order that state employees have to return to the office at least four days a week. calpers is telling its workers the agency will continue its policy that allows two days

of remote work starting july 1st. state employees in other departments will be expected to work in person for out of the five days. unions are now challenging the governor's order. last night, san francisco mayor daniel lurie headed to north beach to celebrate first fridays. he toured the area with supervisor danny sawyer, meeting small business owners along the way. on the first friday of each month, more than a dozen north beach galleries, museums, bars and restaurants will stay open late. they host special events to showcase art collections, along with musicians to entertain the crowds. the next one is on april 4th. meanwhile, across the bay, there was a big turnout for first friday's kick off in oakland. music took center stage at the downtown arts and community festival. it's back along telegraph avenue between 22nd and 27th streets, just in time for international women's month. organizers say the event honors and celebrates the women who inspire and shape

39 camera. i think i spot a few sleepy sea lions there hanging out, enjoying. this saturday morning. it's going to be 612 right now. gene hackman died of cardiovascular disease and complications from alzheimer's, but his wife died of hantavirus. those new details were released just yesterday. the actor and his wife were found dead in their new mexico home last week. carbon monoxide poisoning had been ruled out, but the deaths remained a mystery. abc news reporter jacqueline lee has the latest. >> new details in the deaths of actor gene hackman and his wife, after their slightly mummified bodies were found inside their santa fe home. authorities holding a press conference this afternoon. >> it is unprecedented for the office of the medical investigator to make public statements about death investigations. however, the circumstances surrounding these two deaths require accurate

dissemination of important information. >> the couple's mysterious deaths, prompting questions of when and how authorities confirming betsy hackman died of hantavirus days before gene hackman died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease with alzheimer's disease around february 18th. >> autopsy examination and a full body postmortem ct examination demonstrated no acute findings of internal or external trauma. >> authorities conducting autopsies and toxicology reports. the new mexico gas company confirmed extensive testing at the home. no traces of carbon monoxide and a minuscule gas leak in the stove below a lethal amount. authorities also clarifying the dog, initially identified as one of the german shepherds, now identified as an australian kelpie mix. there are two other german shepherds survived. authorities are also analyzing the couple's cell phones and monthly planner. hackman was recently honored at the 97th academy awards ceremony for his

contributions to the film industry. jacqueline lee, abc news, los angeles. >> tributes are pouring in to honor oakland music great d'wayne wiggins, who helped establish the r&b band tony, tony, tony. he passed away from bladder cancer. wiggins, his 1993 album sons of soul reached double platinum status, and he also inspired other music greats including zendaya, her and destiny's child. he was 64 years old. now to seven, on your side investigates a bay area appliance repair company is sending out a warning claiming someone is impersonating them, swindling their customers out of thousands of dollars and not actually fixing any of their appliances. in this seven on your side investigation, abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow spoke with one victim who said he thought he called the right company but ended up with repair despair. >> you know. >> in november, ben phillips was in need of a fix before his thanksgiving feast. this 22 year

old sub-zero refrigerator had a leak. >> get the refrigerator done and make my wife happy. >> he had used box appliance back in 2019 for repair, but this time when he called and a technician came out, not only was he upsold on replacing the compressor, but the leak remained despite multiple visits. >> she was angry. >> and that was just the start. phillips spent close to $4,000 attempting to fix this refrigerator he called box appliance again. >> i went back online and i go, oh, there's two box appliances. i go, i've been taken here. >> this time, an actual box appliance technician came out and told phillips his refrigerator couldn't be repaired. >> he goes, yeah, we wouldn't have even started on it. and i go, that would have saved me. >> a box appliance is aware that someone is pretending to be them. >> it's really hard explaining to these customers that they were swindled. basically. >> it all comes down to google search results. box appliance president ryan bourgault. >> these other companies

purchased domain names that are very similar to us. they use sponsored ads to move them up higher in the list of google. >> customers call and the other company books the appointments. >> my technicians all show up in vans with sub-zero logos on them. box appliance. >> but those other technicians are showing up in unmarked vehicles. >> we've seen pictures where some of these technicians actually have box appliance on a shirt that they had made, so they're doing everything they can. maybe they're doing some legit service work, but i don't know that for sure. all i hear about is when it goes bad. >> bourgault and his team have attempted to get the other sites taken down. >> it's like playing whack a mole. we take one down and another one goes right back up. >> some victims have filed reports with law enforcement. the santa clara county sheriff's office is one of the agencies now investigating. >> we're trying to track down who is posting these fake sites. we're seeing this not only in the bay area, but across the state. >> in the meantime, box appliances warning customers to make sure they're on the right

stratus there from mount tam that sun up at 630 and temperatures are pretty cool out there. we are 46 downtown, 45 half moon bay with upper 30s on the peninsula and looking at about 40 in hayward, 41 in oakland. and from our sutro tower camera, look at all the 30s below freezing in fairfield, napa at 36 with a north wind at eight. it feels like it's 30, so you might want to wait a minute before heading out. certainly some frost out there. the valleys of the north bay livermore is at 35 concord up at 43. so a reminder to spring forward tonight. your cell phone does that for you. but you could change the batteries in your smoke detector. another clear look outside from the coastline. the golden gate bridge there. so mild, soaked in sun this weekend. looking at that time. change tonight for that later. sunrise and sunset for sunday and then the middle of next week. we're talking about a level two system on wednesday and then rain lingering throughout the rest of the week.

here's a look at your sunny saturday high clouds stopping this at about 330 for your sunday and then into monday. a mixture of clouds and sun so the clouds thickening up, but still the rain a couple of days away as the first system heads into southern california. so we'll be looking at partly cloudy conditions as we start the workweek. quiet for monday into tuesday, this system queuing up a deep area of low pressure with the emphasis in the pacific northwest. but then where we see that train of moisture looks like it's going to be south of the city. so anywhere from san francisco points south looking at most of the rain, but still a generous amount bay area wide. you can see the mountains there looking at a good deal of snow. so rain lingering into thursday and potentially into next weekend. so it looks like an active middle to the end of next week. in this first forecast model is the less aggressive one, with three quarters of an inch of rain in the city, and the other model brings anywhere

from 1 to 2in. bay area wide. so as we get closer in, our high resolution models come into play. a couple of days out, about 48 hours will begin to fine tune these rainfall totals. but you can see the pacific northwest still getting the main impacts. but we need the rain. we'll take it. and looking at the snow anywhere from about two feet there. so a good snow maker on the way as well. but perhaps messing up your wednesday commute. here's a look at highs today, ranging from about 65 in oakland. low 60s in the city, upper 60s in our inland valleys. and as we look at once again, many of you liking our later sunset 711 tomorrow, 610 tonight. and by the time we get into may, we've got that 8:00 sunset. the accuweather seven day forecast featuring the sunny, dry conditions today, tomorrow, a dry start to the workweek with partly cloudy skies and little cooler as we get into tuesday. level two system with wet and windy weather on wednesday and the scattered showers continue into

a final settlement. it may be easier dealing with russia, which is surprising because they have all the cards. ukraine has to get on the ball and get a job done. >> mr. trump's comments came after a post on truth social, where he threatened to impose expanded large scale sanctions and tariffs on russia until it reaches a peace agreement with ukraine. he added both sides need to, quote, get to the table right now before it's too late. his comments come a week after that tense oval office exchange with ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. a little over a day after pausing the 25% tariffs on both canada and mexico, president trump has threatened 250% tariffs on canadian lumber and dairy. the stock market and american businesses now responding to the potential terror threats. here's abc's johny fernandez with that. >> president trump furthering his trade war threatening 250%

tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber. >> canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs for lumber and for dairy products. >> just a day earlier, the president paused tariffs to mexico and canada. trump says the tariffs will create manufacturing jobs in america. >> we're going to bring back our business into this country. we need it from a job standpoint. and consumers and business owners bracing for the impact on their wallets. economists say tariffs on canadian lumber will impact home buyers and construction firms across the country, and likely increase home prices. >> it's hard on homebuilders. it's hard on prospective home buyers. it isn't good for anybody. >> the latest jobs report came in slightly below expectations. the labor department reporting 151,000 new jobs were added to the workforce last month. the report giving the stock market a boost on friday. investors hoping the slower hiring will help to bring down inflation.

overall, the s&p 500 having its worst week since september because of uncertainty with tariffs. despite the turbulence, federal reserve chair jerome powell says the economy is in a good place for now. >> the path to sustainably returning inflation to our target has been bumpy, and we expect that to continue. >> johny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> doge is offering the department of health and human services workers severance packages if they voluntarily quit. many workers there can get up to $25,000 just for quitting. older workers are being offered early retirement packages, and those workers have until next friday to make their decisions. workers in the education and social security administration are being offered similar packages now. in response to the trump administration's decision to cut back on federal research funding. millions across the country and here in the bay area, ask, where would we be without science? abc seven news

nobody voted for this kind of devastating attack on our medical system, and we have to stand up. >> among the sought after cuts, the national institutes of health would be stripped millions of dollars for research into alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. its work being done at bay area universities like cal and stanford research with life saving implications without it. >> very, very scary. not just my life, but everyone's lives. >> i myself am a young breast cancer survivor. the treatment that i had is things that were developed in universities decades ago, research that was funded by the federal government. so there's nobody in america whose life hasn't been positively changed by the research that our universities do. >> a federal judge has temporarily blocked the drastic nih funding cuts. but until the legal battle ends, the fight in the community continues. >> what do we trust to save our lives? >> science. >> what do we need to shape our

pretty nice start to the weekend. you can see the pattern is for all of california to be in the clear. not only today, but tomorrow, but awfully cold temperatures to start out as the storm track is well into the pacific northwest, even up into canada. there's a look at san jose. nice and sunny out there. it is 46, in san francisco, 41 in oakland and san jose, with 39 in redwood city. 45 half moon bay, 40 in hayward. and the cold numbers on this panel here. 42 santa cruz going for a high in the low 60s, but by wednesday, an inch of rain in santa cruz looking at 31 by the delta. so really chilly conditions with 34 in livermore, 35. santa rosa 36. napa petaluma at 37. so that radiational cooling allowing for yesterday's warmth to escape into space. and we are really

for this area of low pressure, a strong one to cue up to the north of us, tapping into some moisture that will bring looks like a weak atmospheric river through the bay area. and then leftover showers on thursday, potentially into next weekend. so there are two forecast models that we are looking at. one is more aggressive. this is the less aggressive one with three quarters of an inch of rain in san francisco for seven days, and the other model brings us well over an inch, so you can count on about an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall for the bay area. as we get into wednesday and thursday, over two inches in the pacific northwest, and then about 1 to 2ft of snow in the mountains. so big time travel impacts here. so this is certainly some good news. and as we look at our highs today beautiful out there 62 downtown 65 palo alto with upper 60s returning for livermore and santa rosa 68 in san jose. sunsets at 610 tonight 711 tomorrow 8:00 by may 1st. so spring is just around the

the seven things to know this morning. number one, a coalition of homeless advocate groups are suing the city of fremont over their new ban on camping and aiding homeless encampments. city council is reviewing changes to their ordinance on the 18th. number two, two women accused of kicking a dog in pittsburg are now being charged with animal cruelty. they were both arrested late last week and will be arraigned in court on multiple charges. number three, the national women's soccer league is investigating bfc's coaching staff for, quote, toxic culture accusations. two former players prompted this
