behind by the thieves. and baseball season is almost here. the giants open up oracle park for this year's fan fest. abc seven news at 430 starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> around the world, from paris to the bay area, tens of thousands of women marched, calling to improve women's rights and to mark international women's rights day. good afternoon, and thanks for joining us for this special 430 edition of abc seven news. i'm diane lim. women across the bay area took to the streets on this international women's day, calling for equal rights and justice. activists say the annual day of action is more important than ever, fearing the current political landscape could reverse the rights many have fought for. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard gives us highlights from two marches in san francisco and the north bay. >> we're not going back. we're not going back. we're not going

back. >> women on the move in san francisco. a march near union square celebrating solidarity on this international women's day. >> we are always stronger together. just look at all of you. >> for many, this annual global event is a call to action with women's rights under attack. >> our reproductive rights have been taken away. we're. thank god i live in san francisco and california, and we have billionaires in the white house that that are making choices for us. >> show me what democracy looks like. >> hundreds of people showing up to march to make their voices heard. >> it just shows that so many of us don't agree with what's going on, and it's a scary time. i feel like it's scary for our future. >> i'm here because i'm appalled. i'm appalled by what donald trump and musk is doing. >> and i am concerned about every single issue that's on the table, starting with healthcare. i'm a retired cancer nurse and

going to all the social services. i am retired, so i personally care about social security and medicare. >> in these turbulent times, coming together in solidarity is more important than ever. >> in madera, dozens marched up tamalpais drive, demanding equal rights and speaking up for victims of violence everywhere. >> we're here to talk about those big issues violence against women, all of the things that's so negatively affect the women in our country and also internationally. >> many say in this changing world, speaking out has never been more important. >> you know, women need to get back into speaking up, supporting the freedom that we've enjoyed for most of our lifetime. i think that's my message. we got to stand up. >> we are not going back. we are not going back. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> just one day after adjusting his proposed 25% tariffs on imports from canada and mexico, president

trump is now threatening a 250% tariff on dairy products from canada, as well as a higher tariff on lumber. here's abc news reporter morgan norwood with details. >> president trump now threatening to match the 250% tax that canada puts on american dairy and impose a tremendously high tariff on lumber. >> canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs, for lumber and for dairy products. 250%. nobody ever talks about that 250% tariff, which is taking advantage of our farmers. they make it impossible for us to sell lumber or dairy products into canada. >> economists say tariffs on canadian lumber will impact home builders and construction firms across the country, and lead to higher home prices. >> it's hard on home builders. it's hard on prospective home buyers. it isn't good for anybody. >> this comes after the president imposed 25% tariffs on all goods from canada and mexico that went into effect march 4th.

ceo said grocery prices could increase within days. carmakers also warned of the consequences. the president then reversing course, pausing tariffs for auto makers, then delaying tariffs on other goods from mexico and canada until april 2nd. some small business owners frustrated by the uncertainty. >> we really need to know what what the costs are going to be now, what the costs are going to be in three months time. >> the president signaling that this volatility is here to stay. >> there will always be changes and adjustments. there will always be some modifications. >> wall street reacting to the uncertainty. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 seesawing this past week. meanwhile, the trump administration is defending the continued firings of federal workers. >> we're trying to shrink government and grow the private sector. >> about 4000 pentagon workers receiving termination notices just this past week. that's just the first round of layoffs at the defense department that could eventually total tens of thousands. morgan norwood, abc news, new york. >> $25,000 severance packages

are being offered to some employees to voluntarily leave the federal workforce. it's all part of president trump's efforts to shrink the size of the federal government. bloomberg reports workers at the department of health and human services got emails from the department of government efficiency offering those buyouts yesterday. workers in the department of education and social security administration have also received similar notices. those workers are being told they have until next friday to make their decision. the president is also attempting to limit student loan forgiveness. he signed an executive order last night seeking to modify a loan relief program for americans in the public service sector. his order targets workers of nonprofit groups in fields at odds with his political agenda, including immigration. congress would have to approve any of those changes. student loan borrowers and advocates are promising to take legal action. the owners of a longtime business in the south bay are asking for help after a

recent burglary. take a look. they sent us photos of the damage left behind after a break in this week at san jose. camera and video gates, doors and windows, as you can see, were all destroyed when a vehicle drove through the front door. an employee who didn't want to go on camera told us burglaries at the store aren't new, and they are getting to be more brazen. >> we've had a great gains. we've actually had people break into the back. we've have a taken a lot of steps into keeping it secured so they can't break into the back anymore. but now they've gone through the front. >> the owners say new and used camera gear was stolen, and say insurance will cover some of the cost, but won't replace everything in the east bay. the bart station in pittsburg will be closed all weekend. crews there are installing new fare gates at the station. they're supposed to cut down on fare evasion and improve safety. trains will run through pittsburg center without making

stops at that station. keep in mind trains from antioch will also depart earlier and arrive later than their published departure times to accommodate work on the pittsburg center platforms. thousands of giants fans celebrated the team today at oracle park. the team hosted its annual giants fan fest ahead of the start of the season. fans got to tour the stadium and take photos with the team's world series trophies, and watch today's spring training game in arizona. >> there are so many cool things to do. we got like tons of free schwag. we got we got the brian wilson bobblehead, which is amazing. >> beautiful day here in san francisco. the park is green, orange and black. we represent it for life. giants, baby. >> yeah, that says it. all right. the giants opened. >> the season on the road for six games. the home opener against the mariners will take place on april 4th. well, across the bay, the oakland ballers held open tryouts at raymond

park in oakland. about 50 players were vying for an invitation to spring training, but they weren't the only ones. interim mayor kevin jenkins joined council members rowena brown and ken houston in taking some swings in the cage there. maybe, though unsurprisingly, they will not be suiting up for the team. >> things went wonderful, coach said. i made the team not because of my talent, but what i can do for them. maybe extra calls from the umpires and everything. but no. it was a wonderful time out. >> having the ballers being rooted here in the community, that's what matters. and so what we're doing is helping to bring oakland really together. and this is this is a great this is a great thing for the city. >> we're giving spirit to the city of oakland, right. we're back. we're back. the a's are gone. but the ballers are here. >> could you imagine if one of them actually made the team? the ballers regular season starts on may 20th. much more news ahead today on abc seven news at 430. some encouraging news from the vatican on pope francis, who has been hospitalized for the past

since he was hospilized about three weeks ago. that's according to cnn, which also reports the pontiff's prognosis remains reserved. earlier, a vatican statement said the pope has seen a gradual, slight improvement and even prayed inside a hospital chapel. on monday, he is set to participate from the hospital in traditional spiritual exercises for lent. now to the latest developments in the war in ukraine. ukrainian officials say at least 20 people were killed and 55 injured in recent attacks by russia. among those injured, at least five children. those attacks come after the u.s. suspended ukraine's access to satellite imagery. here's abc news reporter lama hasan with details. >> reporter russia's barrage of aerial attacks against ukraine are intensifying. russia targeting several residential buildings as well as ukraine's biggest energy and gas companies, launching at least 145 drones and ballistic missiles from multiple locations, according to

ukraine's air force. in ukraine's northeastern region of kharkiv, ukrainian authorities say at least three people were killed after a russian drone hit a civilian workshop. firefighters battling this blaze in the donetsk region after ballistic missile strikes. ukrainian officials say at least 11 people killed in that attack. fires also broke out in the odessa region following a massive drone attack that hit several buildings. president zelenskyy posting on social media, saying these strikes show russia's goals are unchanged, once again driving home the point that ukraine needs to strengthen its air defenses. these attacks come after the u.s. suspended military aid and cut off ukraine's access to commercial satellite imagery, which ukraine says is crucial for its military to operate effectively. one ukrainian officer saying we are fighting blindly. all eyes will be on the scheduled talks in saudi arabia next week between u.s. and ukrainian negotiators. president zelenskyy announcing he will be traveling to saudi arabia to meet with crown prince mohammed bin salman. ahead of those talks, lama hasan, abc news,

london. >> with egg prices at historic highs, the country's largest egg producer is reporting historic profits. a recent sec filing from cal-maine foods shows the company's gross profits are up 342% through the second quarter of the company's fiscal year. cal-maine stock price is also up 27% over the last six months. the justice department is in the early stages of investigating major egg producers over soaring prices. investigators are looking into whether the major egg companies are sharing information about supply and pricing, possibly contributing to price increases. volunteers joined san francisco public works employees to plant 100 new trees on streets around the city today. those new trees will dot the tenderloin south of market and western addition neighborhoods. all of it is part of this year's arbor day celebration. the new trees are aimed at growing san francisco's urban canopy, beautifying streets and improving community

it is time to spring forward for daylight saving time. we'll turn our clocks ahead one hour at 2 a.m, which means, yes, we will lose an hour of sleep tonight. the annual seasonal change brings longer days and shorter nights. arizona and hawaii, by the way, are the only states that do not participate. we can expect to fall back once again on november 2nd. you know, i wouldn't mind if we just got rid of it altogether. >> i know, let's stay on one form of daylight. one. one form of. yeah. one form of daylight saving or no saving. >> that's right. >> all year round. >> we'll just stay right in the middle. >> okay, let's take a look at our weather on this last day of standard time. you see that? we have high pressure. the controlling factor in our weather bringing us this nice sunny skies and the spring like temperatures. and there are disturbances building out at sea right now. but they won't move into the bay area until

about midweek. right now we're looking at breezy conditions, gentle breezes, up to about 10 to 15mph near the bay and the coast, and it's a few degrees warmer right now than at this time yesterday for most of the bay area. excuse me. nice view from sutro tower into blue sky looking out over san francisco, where it's currently 56 degrees 61 in oakland and mid 60s at hayward, san jose, redwood city, half moon bay at 54 degrees. beautiful view from mount tam looking down on to the bay and beyond. 59 in petaluma. that's the cool spot up north where we've got mid 60s at santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore mid to upper 60s. and let's check out our forecast headline. so daylit saving time begins tomorrow. spring forward overnight if you will. by one hour we will have sensational weather tomorrow. sunny and springlike warmth continuing until midweek when storms arrive and a rainy pattern returns. right now we're looking at the changes in sunset times today. sunset will occur at 6:10 p.m. tomorrow, 7:11 p.m, so we gain an hour and

one minute of daylight of daylight. and then on may 1st, 8 p.m. will be the sunset time. okay, overnight forecast animation shows some clouds developing along the coastline and pushing locally over the bay. there will be some spotty sprinkles out over the coastline, over the sea there, but won't move onshore, so we'll have mainly sunny skies to start the day tomorrow and it will be mainly clear overnight with low temperatures mainly in the low to mid 40s. some inland areas like concord, livermore, fairfield will see lows dropping into the upper 30s. then tomorrow's high temperatures 57. half moon bay 62. here in san francisco around the bay shoreline 65 to about 68 degrees. generally mid 60s up in the north bay. upper 60s in the inland east bay and down south 69 will be the high at san jose and 66 at morgan hill. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. once again, don't forget to spring forward overnight. we advance our clocks one hour. daylight saving time begins tomorrow. so monday a dry start to the week under mostly sunny skies. even sunnier on

little bit of a problem, but head coach steve kerr told me today he did scrimmage this afternoon. he's had a couple of good days in a row. that is good. condition is going well for jonathan, which is a good sign. but coach kerr did not give an exact timetable on when he could expect jonathan back in the lineup. and when they do get jonathan kuminga back in the lineup, obviously that's a boost. offensively, he's about 17 to 20 points a game. he's going to add some minutes. he'll deepen the bench. but dion as we go back to you it's a little bit about he's been rusty. and then also there a little bit of a new team now with jimmy butler. so where does he fit in. he will fit in. it's just a matter of kind of getting your chemistry as you get down to the final 20 plus games here. every game, as steph curry has mentioned, is a playoff game as seeding is very, very important. we will be on tonight. we have lakers and celtics on abc seven. but a special more warriors type of show. so if you're a warriors fan, stay tuned for after the game following the lakers and celtics right here on abc seven. >> all right. thanks so much. we are looking forward to that show
