plus, officials are urging commuters to make alternative plans. the strikes, scheduled for vta workers tomorrow and the services that will be impacted. then more possible tariffs by the trump administration. how it's rattling both businesses and consumers. good morning everybody. it's sunday, march 9th. welcome to daylight saving time. woohoo! i know we certainly felt the effects of it. >> 729 is our sunrise this morning. and then it sets at 711. so we have that going for us. and we are looking at clear conditions. temperatures in the 40s storm track well to the north. that's all going to change as we get towards the middle of the week. 39 in danville right now it's 40 in livermore, 46 at sfo and up in the north bay, some mid 30s from santa rosa, 37 sonoma. so compared to yesterday, it's a few degrees colder in spots and a little milder in san francisco and san carlos. so as we go through the 11:00 hour, we're in the upper 50s. we have another

sunny day. some high clouds will be with us throughout the afternoon, with mid and upper 60s once again cooler at the coast and a little breezy at times. we'll talk about some cloud cover to get the workweek started and several days of our storm impact scale coming into play to detail for you steph. >> all right lisa thank you. new developments in a deadly police shooting in martinez that happened in 2023. three police officers have been fired after new evidence released by the martinez police department shows potential misconduct. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> he's going westbound for the. >> newly released video shows. possible police misconduct and a fatal officer involved shooting that left one man dead, such as this scene. as the two men tried to drive away. >> officers fired into the car as the cars. as the car was driving away from the police officers and was not posing a danger to anyone.

>> adante pointer is a lawyer for the wilson family. in august of 2023, tahman and tommy wilson were shot at by martinez police, who were responding to a burglary at a cannabis dispensary. tahman died on scene. >> one officer, you know, came to the scene and was abusing these gunshot victims, despite the fact that they were handcuffed, despite the fact they were compliant, despite the fact they were in need of medical aid and treatment and care, an officer decided to exact what i call street justice. >> newly released documents by the police department described how officer johnny aroney kneed tommy several times in the head while he was already handcuffed, and how the three responding officers tried to hide a knife that one of the officers was illegally carrying. all three officers were fired. two were in their probationary period. >> not only should they be fired, they should be walking into a criminal courtroom dealing with criminal charges and prosecution. >> in a statement, martinez mayor brian zorn thanked the

police chief and city manager for, quote, conducting the administrative investigations in a fair and effective manner and taking immediate action where required. martinez police chief andrew white referred to the officer's behavior as disappointing, adding, quote, as a department, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct. >> that type of gratuitous force cannot be tolerated, and the chief did the right thing by holding those officers accountable. >> the investigation into the officer's use of deadly force is still ongoing in martinez anser hassan abc seven news. >> we're also following developing news from san francisco's outer sunset neighborhood. an armed man was taken to the hospital after being shot by police. officers were called to a home on 41st avenue between lincoln and irving. a man with a gun there was reported to be threatening his neighbors. police say the man opened fire and a responding officer fired back. the man's injuries are described as non life threatening. no officers

were hurt. police say there was no further threat to the public. well, if you live in the south bay, your commute could be disrupted tomorrow morning. vta workers are planning to go on strike. negotiations have been broken down, really? between management and the union, representing 1500 public transit operators, maintenance staff and customer service workers. vta is offering a 9% wage increase over three years with no service cuts. the union wants to double that. >> with a wage increase at this level or anything close to it would be service cuts throughout our system and the likely elimination of positions across vta. this is not a direction that we are willing to go. >> if a strike happens tomorrow, there will be no bus service or light rail service in santa clara county. vta paratransit will not be impacted. the owners of a longtime business in the south bay are asking for help

after a recent burglary. they sent us these photos of the damage left behind after a break-in this week at san jose. camera and video gates. doors and windows were all destroyed when a vehicle drove through the front door. an employee who did not want to go on camera told us burglaries at the store are not new and they are getting to be more brazen. >> we've had break-ins. we've actually had people break into the back. we've have a taken a lot of steps into keeping it secured so they can't break into the back anymore. but now they've gone through the front. >> the owners say new and used camera gear was stolen. they say insurance will cover some of the cost, but it won't replace everything. a meeting was held in the south bay to discuss the fate of san jose's saratoga avenue. community members packed a town hall session to discuss controversial changes to reduce the number of crashes included in the proposals. cutting back

on the number of driving lanes and new protected bike lane and pedestrian safety improvements. the corridor underwent a major transformation as part of san jose's vision zero initiative to improve roadway safety. but the changes have received some mixed reviews. >> i'm also a bicyclist. i'm also a pedestrian. roads are for people. it's not for cars. >> there's no safety, no health issue. let the competent people to do the job. >> this is not about safety. this is about a money grab. the state gave san jose $10 million for vision zero, and they're in a use it or lose it attitude. >> the comments from the town hall will be used by san jose's transportation department to determine any changes, if any need to be made. there was a brief scare over at chase center during the warriors game last night. the fire alarm went off at the end of the first quarter.

>> i guess they got a new story because these guys have been working. >> you hear that? a message posted on the scoreboard moments after asking people to leave their seats, and some of the fans started filing out, as you just saw. a few minutes later, it was announced it was a false alarm and people made their way back to their seats and the game continued. well, president trump is threatening steep reciprocal tariffs on canadian lumber and dairy products, those possible tariffs rattling the economy and u.s. consumers who are also facing the looming threat of a potential government shutdown. here's abc news reporter johny fernandez with the latest. >> u.s. businesses are bracing for the latest tariff threat from the white house. president trump vowing to impose new tariffs on canadian lumber and dairy in response to the large tax canada puts on american dairy and lumber to protect its own industries. this comes after the president imposed 25% tariffs on all goods from canada

and mexico that went into effect on march 4th. the president then changed direction, offering a one month exemption for auto makers on wednesday, followed by a one month delay on tariffs for other goods from mexico and canada on thursday. but the president saying the uncertainty is here to stay. >> there will always be some modifications. i mean, if you have a wall in front of you, sometimes you have to go around the wall instead of through it. >> house gop leaders unveiling their stopgap funding bill on saturday that will fund the government through the end of september. but it will be a challenge to get the bill through both chambers before the march 14th deadline. top house democrats issuing a statement saturday evening saying that they will vote against speaker johnson's short term government funding bill, calling the measure partizan and reckless. johny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> developing news overseas now more than 1000 people have been killed over the past two days after violence erupted in syria.

according to the syrian observatory for human rights, 745 of them were civilians. pro-government fighters have killed residents loyal to assad in so-called revenge massacres. the violent clashes are now in response to a new government taking control after former president bashar al assad fled from his presidential post about three months ago. well, uc berkeley, targeted by the trump administration, how the university could be at risk of losing federal funding. please. >> and we head outside. it's nice and quiet there where temperatures are in the 40s pretty much everywhere, a few 30s in our inland valleys. we are on our way to another really nice day, and we're going to keep the forecast pretty quiet to start the workweek, and then some big changes to talk about coming up. >> also ahead, scary moments at a carmax in southern california. what caused a customer to crash a vehicle into the store? sending people running for safety. then we're all seeing

that's caaaaaaaaash. cashback like a pro with chase freedom unlimited. how do you cashback? scene at a car dealership in inglewood. an irate customer rammed through the front doors of the showroom, hitting at least eight people. two of those people suffered critical injuries. the driver kept driving while inside that showroom, running over chairs and desks. you see the chaos here? it just happened after this customer was getting his car appraised. the driver was later arrested by police. very scary. well, soaring egg prices have prompted the department of justice to launch an investigation. antitrust enforcers are apparently trying to determine if large egg producers conspired to limit the egg supply and raise prices. all of this as a bird flu outbreak has wiped out millions of hens,

resulting in a nationwide egg shortage. abc news reporter alexis christoforous has more. >> the u.s. justice department is in the early stages of investigating the country's largest egg producers for what some are alleging is a, quote, coordinated effort to restrict supply and inflate prices. the egg industry says the worst bird flu outbreak in u.s. history has forced them to cull tens of millions of hens, leading to consumers paying an egg surcharge at chains like waffle house and denny's and empty store shelves across the country. prices have nearly doubled in the past year, averaging about $5. a dozen eggs now cost nearly as much as a pound of ground beef, and the usda predicts egg prices could increase another 40% this year. at small businesses like new york city's square diner, owner theodore bruno's is trying to hold off on raising prices. >> if things hold up at this price, i'll pay $70,000 more for eggs than i did last year. i

can't just absorb that hit for the next nine months. >> while consumers and businesses shell out more for eggs, profits are soaring at the nation's largest egg producer and distributor. profits at cal-maine surged 342% last quarter compared to a year ago. in a statement to abc news, the president of the american egg board saying to suggest that higher egg prices are the result of anything other than bird flu is a misreading of the facts and the reality. in 2023, a jury trial ordered cal-maine and three other companies to pay $53 million for unlawfully inflating prices. a verdict the companies are challenging cal-maine has not returned abc news request for comment. but the looming threat of tariffs on goods from mexico and canada have consumers bracing for more food inflation target already, saying it will have to raise produce prices. walmart warning of a sales slowdown and costco saying consumers are increasingly opting for cheaper alternatives like private label store brands

over name brands. experts warn that egg prices could stay high even if the supply of eggs rebounds. as grocers and restaurants try to reclaim their lost profits. alexis christoforous, abc news, new york. >> all right. a former child actor is launching his second act as a budding chef. hudson yang's new show, crash course cuisine, premieres this weekend on nat geo. >> cooking with this. touch it. no, don't touch it. don't step back. >> yang previously starred on abc's fresh off the boat, and when that show ended, yang thought about what he wanted to do next. so he enrolled in harvard, but also realized he always loved food, cooking, and traveling. this first season of crash course cuisine has yang combining all of his interests in houston, new orleans, and singapore. he learns from master chefs and does his best to keep

up. >> when i look at cooking shows, it seems like everything's always perfect. every dish is always the best as soon as they make it. and i realized that's not what cooking is. when i learned how to cook, i made a mistake every five seconds. and i think watching that can kind of make it, like seem, you know, scary. and i wanted to create a show where, you know, you can watch me mess up and make mistakes. and, and i do a lot. i'm hoping this amateur chef. >> don't we all i certainly do. yang is also executive producer of the show crash course cuisine debuts tonight on nat geo at 10 p.m. disney, of course, is the parent company of nat geo and abc seven. seeing some of that cooking, lisa has got me hungry this morning. yeah. >> we're all out of whack right from that time change. but you know what? we are going to see some big changes the middle to the end of the week. so we are certainly not done with the rain yet. so that's some good news. and snow. we're going to be talking about snow in feet. in fact possibly five feet of snow as we get through the end of

next weekend. now that's getting way ahead of ourselves. but it was, as we look at live doppler seven right now, you'll notice that the storm track is well to the north of us, and that is allowing for another dry and quiet day. a lot of sunshine, some high clouds visiting us at times. it's 35 cold in sonoma. how about 39 in gilroy with 40 in livermore. so temperatures this morning are in and around the range that we have been the past couple of mornings. and a look outside there. so we've got some high clouds for parts of the bay and then we'll be looking at more sunshine. so a nice afternoon. but you know the winds are going to kick up a bit today. it will be breezy. more cloud cover arrives on monday. and then by wednesday we have a level two system. and it looks like even by late next sunday we could see another significant round of rain. so once again, way too far out to pinpoint any of the details. it's just that it is coming into play. as we look at our winds, you'll notice they're out of the south and anywhere from 15 to 25 miles an

hour. as we get through the afternoon, they'll stay elevated right on through the four 5:00 hour. so certainly a little bit breezy at times. so if you're not right in the sun, yes, it does feel cool. here's a look at our cloud cover today. the sunshine a few high clouds. and then as we get into monday, we'll get some high and mid level clouds. and then tuesday that system skirts to the south of us, and we'll get back into a partly cloudy day, the fog setting up along the shoreline. so that's our quiet start, the temperatures slowly coming down as we get into monday and tuesday. and then by tuesday night you can see a little bit of rainfall off to the west. but it looks like that's going to hold off until wednesday. there's the system early in the week that's moving to southern california. it will skim us with some cloudy cloud cover and then the rain and wind and then snow get going wednesday into thursday looking at some leftover showers, maybe a thunderstorm on thursday. friday looks like more rain level one

system. and then this is what's coming over the weekend. looks like we'll set up another several storms coming our way. so the next seven days still looking pretty good for an inch to an inch and a half here. san francisco throughout the south bay, the east bay. and this is what is impressive, isn't it? this is through next saturday. anywhere from 3 to 5ft of snow and those snow levels coming down pretty good. temperatures today from the mid and upper 60s for our warmest locations, so it will be nice out there. partly cloudy skies, san francisco up to the north bay and the accuweather seven day forecast. sunny, mild, some high clouds today. dry start to the week. a little cooler as we get into tuesday, level two system on wednesday and then the wet pattern with several rounds of rain continue thursday friday and it looks like into next weekend as well steph. >> all right liz thank you. just ahead an all new season of american idol gets underway tonight. from the moments where you cringe to the amazing vocals

and air traffic controllers. according to the national air traffic controllers association, it's nearly the worst in 30 years. the union's president testified at a subcommittee hearing this week, saying some employees have been forced to ten hour shifts six days a week for years at a time. 3000 more air traffic controllers need to be hired to reach sufficient staffing. all right. it's been one of the most talked about news series out there. paradise on hulu has fans buzzing, especially after that wild season finale. the cast was on hand for a special screening of the show in hollywood. paradise stars sterling k brown, james marsden, julianne nicholson,

told you can stream season one now on hulu. disney, of course, is the parent company of hulu and abc seven. well, tonight, a brand new season of american idol officially gets underway, and we know at least one of the people auditioning for the show is from the bay area. it's the 23rd season for the competition show, but the first time fans will see a beloved idol taking a seat on the judges panel. entertainment reporter joelle gargiulo got a chance to catch up with them and hear more about this brand new season. >> this is the stage where singers become superstars, and this is american idol. >> the search for the next singing sensation has begun with american idol's brand new season, and the judges swung through the tri-state, making a trip to the big apple for auditions. >> come on, bada bing. whatever it is. come on. is that new york? >> yeah, yeah. new york.

clouds at times today, 3:00, mid and upper 60s, and our warmest locations still cool at the shoreline and the winds kicking up today out of the south over 20 miles an hour in spots. so we'll talk about several nice spring like days ahead before we bring some spring showers and some heavy rain at times into the forecast. steph. >> all right lisa thank you. hayward police are investigating a fatal three vehicle collision that killed a 20 year old woman. police say it happened near the intersection of hayward boulevard and civic avenue right around 930 saturday night. at least three other people were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital. they are expected to survive. investigators. investigators, that is, are looking into whether alcohol was a factor in this crash. and police say it's the third fatal collision this year. uc berkeley is one of ten schools that could lose federal funding due to claims of anti-semitism. according to the chronicle, the department of justice created a list of schools that faces cuts in

federal funding, and president trump's administration alleges these institutions created a hostile environment for jewish students and faculty. this comes after federal law enforcement announced an investigation of uc berkeley and four other universities just last month. ucla and the university of california are also included on the list. women across the bay area took to the streets for international women's day, calling for equal rights and justice. activists say the annual day of action is more important than ever, fearing the current political landscape could reverse the rights many have fought for. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard gives us the highlights. >> we're not going back. we're not going back. we're not going back. >> women on the move in san francisco. a march near union square celebrating solidarity on this international women's day. >> we are always stronger together. just look at all of you. >> for many, this annual global

in the department of education and social security administration have also received similar notices. the workers are being told they have until next friday to make their decision. coming up on this week, the economic fallout over the president's tariff, threats from high prices in the grocery store to uncertainty with jobs, it's the issue on the minds of many americans. but will prices continue to soar? white house national economic council director will break it all down with george stephanopoulos this morning. you can watch that full interview on this week at eight this morning, right here on abc seven. in the east bay, the bart station in pittsburg will be closed all weekend. crews are installing new fare gates at the station. they're supposed to cut down on fare evasion and improve safety. trains will run through pittsburg center without making stops at that station. also, trains from antioch will depart earlier and arrive later than their published departure times

to accommodate work on the pittsburg center platforms. p-g-and-e's is using ai to predict where and when storms will be most severe. the utility company says the system uses a mix of real time and historical weather forecasts. it allows p-g-and-e's to work ahead of storms and position crews to minimize outages and mitigate wildfire risk. >> 1400 of our almost 1600 weather stations that we have across the service territory, and so we're able to see over a five day period what the wind speeds are doing and that those are those forecasts are enhanced with the machine learning. >> a p-g-and-e's spokesperson confirmed the model is being used for this week's storm. well, still ahead on abc seven mornings. a new study by the cdc, how it plans to take a closer look at the link between vaccines and autism. then learning made fun with some robots. the showcase at uc berkeley that gave students to

are showing off their creations this weekend at uc berkeley. the university's college of engineering is hosting the one world vex robotics showcase. it's what organizers call competitive robotics, a chance for grade school students to show what their customized robots can do. the event is put on by the robot labs foundation, an organization that teaches k through 12 students across the bay area. robotics and stem. great to see that. well, san jose is gearing up to host this year's nvidia conference. 25,000 people are expected to be in town for the tech conference. it

takes place monday, march 17th through friday, march 21st. city officials say this will be a chance to activate san jose's downtown area and bring in some big economic gains for small businesses. last year's geo tech conference brought in $15.5 million in economic impact. well, the cdc plans to study a possible link between vaccines and autism. despite numerous studies debunking a link between the two. officials now say they will leave no stone unturned. this continued research comes from robert f kennedy jr. s claims that autism rates have skyrocketed. he says rates have gone from one in 10,000 to 1 in 34. within children diagnosed with the autoimmune disease. however, studies from 2000 show 1 in 150 children born in year 1992 were diagnosed with autism,

looking at our ridge of high pressure to stay with us for the next several days. one system sliding to the south of us, ■and then many taking aim at us throughout the middle to the end of the week, bringing a big pattern change as we get into wednesday. it is 38, in danville. good morning to you. 37 in gilroy with 36. sonoma. 48, san francisco, 41 palo alto. and our forecast headlines looking at some sunshine today, some high clouds in parts of the bay area. a little breezy in spots, certainly along the coast in the city later on this afternoon. and then for tomorrow, more cloud cover. we still remain dry. and then into wednesday, a level two system bringing rain and wind, high surf and looking at the possibility of a thunderstorm. as we get into thursday and more multiple rounds of rain as we get into even next weekend. here's a look at the elevated winds as we get into that 2 to 3:00 hour out of the south over 25 miles an hour. so it's going to make it feel cool at times.

but this morning, starting out with the sunshine. and then as we get through the afternoon you'll notice a few high clouds. or maybe you won't even notice them, but they will thicken as we get into your monday. still dry and then variable clouds with more sun and that fog setting up along the shoreline into tuesday. as we get into late tuesday, the pattern is getting a little bit more developed and picking this up from the system on monday, that misses us. you'll notice just grazing southern california and then this system is the stronger one. it's got a subtropical moisture fetch, and it is an atmospheric river that will bring soaking rain to the bay area on wednesday. it pushes through into thursday. we've got a lot of mountain snow, low snow levels and then into friday. looks like another system, a level one headed our way. but by saturday this is setting up that system, pushing through, setting up to be a stronger one on sunday. so we have a lot of rain to sort out in the next several

days. but the next seven days from today into next sunday, still looking at about an inch to an inch and a half. so this will not cause great problems. but we are looking at those winds to also come in with the heavy downpours on wednesday. and then whether or not that late weekend system pans out to be a stronger one, we'll obviously watch that for you. but in terms of snow, this is looking pretty good. obviously impacting travel, but at least 3 to 5ft of snow in most of the ski resorts there in the mountains. so today enjoy that sun. some high clouds 62 downtown 65 in oakland. look for 68 in livermore with mid 60s up in the north bay. that sun setting at 711. the accuweather seven day forecast. several dry days, slightly cooler into the workweek before we get into our rain and wind on wednesday. wet pattern continues thursday, friday and into next weekend, so dig out those umbrellas. stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. thousands of giants fans celebrated the team at oracle
