afternoon. we've got a lot of dry air out there as well. take a look at some of the temperatures that we're anticipating in the coming days. so really no relief in sight when it comes to rain. new york city in the low 60s both monday and tuesday. and while it is not unheard of this time of year to have wildfires in the northeast, we're certainly seeing very dynamic visuals coming out of long island. jenny. >> all right, tamara, thank you for that. turning overseas now to the. >> intense clashes in syria that have reportedly killed more than a thousand people. the violence, a major escalation in the challenge to the new government in damascus. abc's lama hasan is monitoring those developments. and we have not seen violence like this in a while there, lama. >> no we haven't. and good morning to you, jenny. this morning there are growing fears, these clashes gripping large swathes of syria's western coast. the deadliest since the conflict began 14 years ago, will now trigger more violence against ethnic minorities and more deaths. the images circulating online are shocking. there's dramatic nighttime video showing gunmen repeatedly shooting at a building and
7:06 am
igniting a fire. now the violence erupting on thursday with fierce fighting between the new government, security forces and loyalists of the ousted former president bashar al assad. the fighting then spread with revenge killings for those deaths, and more than a thousand people have been killed so far. most of them are civilians. syria's interim leader ahmed al-shara remember he took over just three months ago after the assad regime was toppled back in december. he's now calling for a national unity and peace. this major escalation of violence is his biggest challenge since taking control. gio. >> all right, lama, thank you so much. we're going to turn now to the trade war and tariff whiplash. president trump saying he's ready to impose a massive reciprocal tariff on canadian dairy and lumber as early as tomorrow. senior white house correspondent selina wang is in washington with the latest on this. good morning. selina. >> hey, good morning joe. and that trade whiplash isn't going away anytime soon. the president says more tariffs could come tomorrow. the president is threatening to impose steep
7:07 am
tariffs on canadian lumber and dairy products. he says it's in response to the high tax that canada puts on american lumber and dairy to protect its own industries. but that tariff on lumber, especially, could cause real pain here in the u.s. i spoke to the owner of a lumber yard in maryland who said those tariffs would hurt his sales, since he'd have to pass on the cost to his customers by raising prices. the national association of home builders says even a 25% tariff on canadian lumber would increase the cost of building a new single family home by up to $10,000. but this is just the latest twist. after a week of on again, then off again tariffs. so trump imposed tariffs on mexico and canada on tuesday, only to pause most of those tariffs soon after. but now he's threatening them once again. business owners i talked to tell me it's not just the tariffs that's hurting their operations, but it's also all of the uncertainty. and they're bracing for more in the coming weeks, with trump vowing to impose tariffs on a whole range of countries on april 2nd. whit. >> all right. selina wang, thanks so much. let's bring in
7:08 am
abc's chief washington correspondent jonathan karl, who will be hosting this week later on this morning john good morning to you. so let's start right there with that back and forth over president trump's threats on tariffs. many businesses in limbo here wondering if this is all part of a broader strategy and where it's going to end up. >> well, look, there will probably be more back and forth. trump signaled that on friday. but the overall strategy, if you take trump at his word is more tariffs. i mean, he believes that tariffs can solve a lot of problems for the united states. they can pressure countries to do things he wants like he's trying to do with with fentanyl smuggling. he believes tariffs can bring in revenue to the treasury and help him balance the budget. he believes tariffs can protect american industry. he believes that tariffs are central to his economic agenda. so look there was back and forth this week. we've seen the tariffs on canada and mexico at least partially suspended. but
7:09 am
they are scheduled to go back into effect on april 2nd. and i he could postpone again. but look donald trump is not giving up his faith in tariffs as something of a cure all for the economy. >> yeah, he certainly made that clear. i do want to turn now to this apparent friction between elon musk and at least some cabinet members over layoffs at top government agencies, signaling perhaps some division within the administration. how could you see all of that playing out? >> elon musk clearly was taken down a notch this week. you know, donald trump, according to multiple sources that were in the meeting, during a cabinet meeting, explicitly said that the cabinet secretaries have the authority over who is hired and fired, not elon musk, although he did add that if they don't do the job, elon will go in and do it. so elon hasn't been totally shifted aside. and we saw even after that meeting him getting
7:10 am
on marine one with president trump, he's still very much a key part of this administration. but there's no question whit that this was a significant moment with the president in front of his full cabinet saying, no, no, no. elon musk is not in charge of your agencies. you are, at least for now. >> something to watch very closely. jon karl, as always, we appreciate it. and tune in to this week later this morning. jon. interviews top white house economic adviser kevin hassett about how president trump's shifting tariff decisions are impacting the u.s. economy. plus, john speaks with democratic senator adam schiff of california about democrats strategy to counter trump's agenda. that's all coming up on this week tonight. >> all right. we're going to stay in washington as congress is staring at another potential government shutdown this week. president trump urging republican lawmakers to vote for speaker johnson's latest short term spending bill. but it remains to be seen whether they will have enough support. abc's alex presha is in washington with more because they can't
7:11 am
afford to lose too much. alex. >> john, you're absolutely right. so this week will be a major test for speaker of the house mike johnson in just how well he can sway his party. this weekend, the republican speaker unveiled his plan. it's a continuing resolution that would keep the government funded through september. the 99 page bill adds $6 billion for veteran health care. it increases money for immigration and customs enforcement deportation. and it slashes non-government spending by $13 billion and cuts $20 billion from irs enforcement. now president trump is urging his party to remain united and pass this. speaker johnson can likely only afford to lose one republican vote, and already two have said that there are no democrats call the bill reckless and troublesome, and could use this moment to challenge the doge cuts to the federal government. if a deal is not reached by march 14th, millions of federal workers face furlough or working without pay at a time where the federal government is already dealing with record cuts to its workforce. the next vote is expected on tuesday.
7:12 am
>> gio and we will see what happens then. all right alex, thank you so much. now to the shocking scene caught on camera at a car dealership outside los angeles. a driver plowing through the doors, mowing down customers and employees. abc's orange shaw is in la with this unbelievable video. good morning. sorry. >> good morning. gio. this appeared to be such a terrifying incident that the call first came in as an active shooter. according to carmax, an upset customer got in his car and allegedly used it as a weapon, seriously hurting multiple people in an area just ten miles from downtown los angeles. chaos inside this california carmax caught on camera. >> go that way. go that way. go that way. go that way. >> watch as the driver plows his car into the store in inglewood, near los angeles. driving through the store and out the back. saturday afternoon, injuring at least eight people. both customers and employees. two of those injuries critical,

cal-maine has not yet responded to our request for comment. now, as for when we might see prices start to come down, experts say with an eccentric holiday like easter right around the corner, don't expect relief anytime soon. the usda predicts prices could rise another 40% this year. and even if supply rebounds, experts say prices could stay high as grocers and restaurants try to make back some of their lost profits. guys. >> all right alexis. a lot to follow there. we appreciate it. all right. so if you woke up a little bit tired, that's because you may have lost an hour of sleep overnight. daylight saving time went into effect and most of the country. so let's talk about what that means for your health with abc news medical correspondent doctor darien sutton right here with that. doctor darien, thank you so much for joining us here. hope you're okay. not struggling as much as with johnson. >> i feel terrific. what are you talking about? >> this switch is always controversial, right? we fall back, and then we spring forward. what does this mean for our health? because there's a real impact here. >> it's been incredibly controversial. you know, it's even been brought to congress. and unfortunately, it has not

been made in terms of a decision, in terms of what we should do in daylight savings time. and the outcome remains unclear. but what is clear is that small changes in sleep, even small decreases, can detrimentally affect your health. increasing stress hormones that increases our risk of heart attacks and strokes, principally among women and older adults in the first two days after the shift change. so you have to pay attention. >> all right. so we know that beforehand, if you could get to sleep a little bit better, maybe that helps out. but now that it's happened, what can. >> we do? >> well, i think you can still work on that. shifting your bedtime earlier is really important, especially for this first week. the 15 to 30 minutes. you want to try to shift it earlier, but also a part of that, keeping it consistent. we talk about the amount of time you should sleep. we talk about quality staying asleep. but the third factor of sleep is consistency. the same sleep time and the same wake time each and every day. you want to try that, try to keep that as close as possible and then something really simple but really important. getting light i know this is speaking to people who don't get that much light. >> in the morning.
