shopping mall. >> blooming flowers bring frazzled nerves. homeowners are taking measures to stop a super bloom from creating gridlock in their east bay neighborhood. and price check. it's not just eggs. we'll be paying more for yet another breakfast staple. abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> train bells set to fall silent tomorrow. transit workers in santa clara county say they are going on strike. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. we begin now with the latest on this developing story. the union confirming valley transportation authority workers are indeed going on strike. the transit service will effectively stop when operators walk off the job one minute after midnight monday morning. that is just seven hours from now. about 1500 employees will hit the picket lines, and that means tens of thousands of commuters will have

to find another way to get around. that strike comes after negotiations between the workers union atu and the vta stalled at us local president saying, quote, for months, our members have been disregarded, their sacrifices ignored and their needs dismissed. we will not back down. vta, meanwhile, is focused on letting riders know about the potential disruption. >> we have 100,000 people a day during the week that ride our service, and many, many, many people depend on that service to get to where they need to go. it's a very regrettable situation, and we want to make sure that people are prepared so they can get the service that they need. >> vta has offered a wage increase that amounts to a total of 9% over three years. what they call their last best final offer. the union says the agency has failed to address fair wages, benefits, grievance procedures and working conditions. atu represents bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers,

fare inspectors and customer service representatives. they plan to picket at these vta bus and rail yards and vta headquarters in downtown san jose. we are following the story of san francisco's great highway park march 13th that is. thursday is te last day a two mile span of road between lincoln way and sloat boulevard will be open to traffic. that span of highway one is scheduled to officially become a park on april 12th. voters approved it with the passage of proposition k in november, but not without controversy. those against the park have launched a recall effort of the district supervisor, joel engardio, because he supports the park to the east bay now, where a neighborhood is bracing for crowds of visitors making the annual trek to see wildflower super blooms. visitors in years past have overrun the walnut creek neighborhood, but this weekend, neighbors think they've come up with a way to prevent that. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us not

everyone is happy about it. >> this is virginia court. every single spot on the street is taken. >> flower frenzy in this small walnut creek neighborhood. this video from last spring shows just how many people flocked to sutherland drive and virginia court to access shell ridge open space to see the california poppy super bloom. these images are from 2024. >> i mean, i can't describe to you the number. i mean, let's go 1500 cars every day on the weekends, probably in the springtime. >> neighbor elise fornaci says the photo spot likely began with a social media post going viral. >> and we cease to be a little walnut creek neighborhood entrance. you're in wall to wall like bumper to bumper traffic coming 100 yards up the street. >> so many nature enthusiasts trekked here. the neighborhood, located in unincorporated contra costa county, became worried about safety. >> we're concerned about fire danger with cars wrapped on both sides of the street. you can't. emergency vehicles can't come

in. >> starting this weekend, a possible solution and compromise between the county and the city of walnut creek, where the open space is located, these signs are posted. the neighborhood is now a temporary no parking zone on weekends unless you have a permit. visitors have to park outside the neighborhood and walk in. some people say they get it. >> makes sense. i you know, if i lived in this neighborhood, i would probably want some sort of restriction. it's peace and quiet. >> others? not so much. >> it's annoying. >> it seems a little like an overreach. >> the neighborhood association offering this qr code with alternative entrances to the open space. like how homestead park. nearly two dozen parking spaces here. and the entrance to the open space trail is right there. contra costa county supervisor ken carlson tells abc seven news. we are partnering with the city of walnut creek to provide a workable solution to protecting the safety and quality of life for residents, but also provide public access to the open space. i don't believe anyone anticipated the

viral response to the wildflower bloom. neighbors say so far, the parking restrictions are working, but the real test will come later when the poppies start to bloom. >> what we want is a way for everybody to be happy. and this is, you know, really it. >> in walnut creek. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> in the north bay, marin county is pledging to invest a half million dollars toward safeguarding immigrant communities. last week, the board of supervisors voted in support of the funding. it would go towards bolstering legal rights, education and assistance, and to child and family support services. the move is in response to recent federal immigration policy changes and immigration raids. it follows a recent state commitment of $25 million in new funding for legal related services and immigration support. uc berkeley is one of ten schools nationwide that could lose federal funds duo claims of anti-semitism. the chronicle reports that the department of justice created a list of schools that face

funding reductions. the trump administration alleges the schools created a hostile environment for jewish students and faculty. this all comes after federal law enforcement announced an investigation of uc berkeley and four other universities last month. ucla and the university of southern california are also included on that list. on then off, the status of president donald trump's tariffs is changing every day. and now more tariffs could be coming as soon as tomorrow. abc news reporter selina wang, with details now from the white house. >> president trump threatening to impose steep tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber products as early as monday. he says it's in response to the high tax canada puts on american lumber and dairy to protect its own industries. the national association of home builders says even a 25% tariff on canadian lumber would increase the cost of building a new single family home by up to $10,000. i spoke with dennis woodruff, a lumber yard owner in

maryland, who says his customers will have to pay more. >> i'm going to have to raise the prices because i can't sell it for what it costs me. >> trump imposed tariffs on all imports from mexico and canada on tuesday last week. then the next day, the president announced a one month reprieve for the auto industry. by thursday, he delayed the tariffs on some other goods for one month. but this weekend, the president telling fox news that on april 2nd, the tariffs become reciprocal. >> this is short term, and i felt that for the good of the american carmakers and the mca, i thought it would be a fairca, thing to do. and so i gave them a little bit of a break for this short period of time. >> the president of the united auto workers union says he believes the tariffs on canada and mexico are an attempt to stop the bleeding. >> there is no single issue in this country that has affected our economy and working class people in their jobs than nafta, the usmca and our trade laws, our broken trade system. and we're in a crisis mode.

♪ dreams begin here. welcome to the goodnight club. gearing up to host this year's nvidia conference. 25,000 people are expected to be in town for the event. it's scheduled from monday, march 17th to friday, march 21st. city officials say this will be a chance to activate san jose's downtown area and help small businesses. last year's conference was the first to be held in person since the pandemic, and had a $15.5 million economic impact. a special food feast today featuring crab, crab and more crab. take a look. fisherman's wharf celebrated national crab day with its first ever crab

crawl. for about $70, people could savor six crab delights from six different restaurants that stretched from pier 39 to aquatic park. they served dishes that included traditional crab cakes and crab legs, to a seafood twist with crab curry. >> we're even promoting our local fisherman as well. it's still crab season out here. people are really seeming to enjoy it. the restaurants are loving it. we just want to bring people down to fisherman's wharf. >> the fact that they're there, having these types of events here in this, in san francisco, especially fisherman's wharf, where it's known for its crabs. looking forward to eating some some crab out of san francisco bay. >> great excuse to eat crab. fisherman's wharf hopes to make this crab crawl an annual event. well, today was the kickoff to a bay area tradition. this season's rides on the niles canyon railway are underway. passengers hopped on this morning's heritage train leaving from sunol. the 80 minute round trip journey takes them through alameda county's historic niles canyon into fremont. that's

for a dozen of eggs. california egg prices reached $9.22 a dozen last month. that's according to the u.s. department of agriculture. that's about a 15% increase from the month before. now, the department of agriculture says bird flu has affected more than 12 million birds in just the last 30 days, and that includes 319,000 right here in the state. the wall street journal reports that the department of justice has now launched an investigation into large egg producers pricing practices. and sorry to be the bearer of bad news. it's not just eggs, because coffee prices are at an all time high. in february, the cost of arabica coffee futures, which set the current price more than doubled from the same time last year. sfgate reports that the price is being passed on to us, with several bay area cafes and roasters increasing their

prices. severe weather is blamed for taking a toll on global coffee bean harvests. and maybe this is just, you know, something i observed. but today, maybe because of daylight saving, i saw so many people at the coffee shop. you know, whether it be a price hike or not. >> i saw the same thing. they need it. i had my eggs for breakfast. the last two in my carton this morning. stopped for a cappuccino on the way to work. everybody was in line. oh, boy. so let's let's go right to the weather. let's do it. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. we've got high pressure still in the controlling factor in our weather, but you see a few clouds moving into the picture. so over the next couple of days we'll have sun and clouds, but it will remain dry. it's breezy right now, with gusts up to 24mph at sfo and 15 to 20 mile per hour winds just about everywhere else. and although we started the day with pretty mild weather, you can see it's quite a bit cooler right now across the region than at this time yesterday. so let's take a live look. and it is 55 here in the city right now. low 60s at oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city, 55 at

half moon bay, nice blue sky over the golden gate up north, 60 degrees right now at santa rosa. upper 50s at petaluma and napa. low 60s at fairfield and almost 70 at livermore. looking down onto the bay from mount tam. these are the forecast headlines tomorrow and tuesday. mild and dry with a mix of sun and clouds, and wednesday, a strong level two storm arrives rainy and windy on wednesday, and that will be followed by a series of rainy days going all the way into next weekend. and for tonight, we'll see a few high clouds moving through the bay area, so we'll call it partly cloudy overnight and partly cloudy going into the early morning hours. despite the presence of some clouds, temperatures will drop in some of our inland areas overnight into the upper 30s. so chilly inland but low to mid 40s around the bay shoreline and on the coast, which is about average for this time of the year. and then tomorrow, another mild day. even with a few clouds around, we'll see highs up to about 60 at half moon bay, 65 here in the city, around the bay shoreline. mid to upper 60s and lots of upper 60s inland. many locations will come close to 70 degrees tomorrow. we're calling 70 for as a high for san jose at 69. many other locations

now going into the week ahead, as the storms arrive here, there will be a winter storm watch in effect in the sierra above 4000ft. we expect 12 to 18in of snow. this is going to be a significant storm and 2 to 3ft in the higher elevations, with gusts up to 70mph. travel will be difficult to impossible. and by the way, this winter storm watch in effect from tuesday night into thursday night. okay, here's our accuweather seven day forecast. i'll just back out of the way to give you a better view. so dry weather for the next couple of days. mild tomorrow but cooling down a bit on tuesday. then that level two storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale arrives on wednesday. it will be a rainy and windy day, and of course there'll be ample snow in the sierra and then thursday, friday, saturday and sunday we'll have weaker but still significant storms moving in. only level one storms on the on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. but with the impact of the storm on wednesday, the ground will likely be saturated. so even light rain following that storm will be problematic. >> oh boy. let's just focus
