>> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> train bells set to fall silent tomorrow. transit workers in santa clara county say they are going on strike. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. we begin now with the very latest on this developing story. the union confirming to abc seven valley transportation authority workers are indeed going on strike. the transit service will effectively stop when operators walk off the job one minute after midnight monday morning. that is just six hours from now. about 1500 employees will hit the picket lines, and that means tens of thousands of commuters will have to find another way to get around. the strike comes after negotiations between the workers union atu and the vta stalled at u.s. local president, saying, quote, for months, our members have been disregarded, their sacrifices ignored, and

their needs dismissed. we will not back down. the vta, meanwhile, is focused on letting riders know about the potential disruption. >> we have 100,000 people a day during the week that ride our service, and many, many, many people depend on that service to get to where they need to go. it's a very regrettable situation, and we want to make sure that people are prepared so they can get the service that they need. >> vta has offered a wage increase that amounts to a total of 9% over three years. what they call their last best final offer. the union says the agency has failed to address fair wages, benefits, grievance procedures and working conditions. atu represents bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers and fare inspectors, along with customer service representatives. they plan to picket at these vta bus and rail yards and vta headquarters in downtown san jose. we are following the story of san francisco's

great highway park march 13h that is. thursday is the last day a two mile span of road between lincoln way and sloat boulevard will be open to traffic. that span of highway one is scheduled to officially become a park on april 12th. voters approvedut controversy. those against the park have launched a recall effort of the district supervisor, joel neighg for crowds of visitors making their annual trek to see wildflower super blooms. visitors in years past have overrun the walnut creek neighborhood, but this weekend, neighbors think they've come up with a way to prevent that. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us not everyone is happy about it. >> this is virginia court. every single spot on the street is taken. >> flower frenzy in this small

walnut creek neighborhood. this video from last spring shows just how many people flocked to sutherland drive and virginia court to access shell ridge open space to see the california poppy super bloom. these images are from 2024. >> i mean, i can't describe to you the number. i mean, let's go 1500 cars every day on the weekends, probably in the springtime. >> neighbor elise fornaci says the photo spot likely began with a social media post going viral. >> and we cease to be a little walnut creek neighborhood entrance. you're in wall to wall like bumper to bumper traffic coming 100 yards up the street. >> so many nature enthusiasts trekked here. the neighborhood, located in unincorporated contra costa county, became worried about safety. >> we're concerned about fire danger with cars wrapped on both sides of the street. you can't. emergency vehicles can't come in. >> starting this weekend, a possible solution and compromise

between the county and the city of walnut creek, where the open space is located. these signs are posted. the neighborhood is now a temporary no parking zone on weekends unless you have a permit. visitors have to park outside the neighborhood and walk in. some people say they get it. >> makes sense. i you know, if i lived in this neighborhood, i would probably want some sort of restriction. it's peace and quiet. >> others? not so much. >> it's annoying. >> it seems a little like an overreach. >> the neighborhood association offering this qr code with alternative entrances to the open space. like how homestead park. nearly two dozen parking spaces here. and the entrance to the open space trail is right there. contra costa county supervisor ken carlson tells abc seven news. we are partnering with the city of walnut creek to provide a workable solution to protecting the safety and quality of life for residents, but also provide public access to the open space. i don't believe anyone anticipated the viral response to the wildflower bloom. neighbors say so far, the

parking restrictions are working, but the real test will come later when the poppies start to bloom. >> what we want is a way for everybody to be happy. and this is, you know, really it. >> in walnut creek. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> in the north bay, marin county is pledging to invest a half million dollars toward safeguarding immigrant communities. last week, the board of supervisors voted in support of funding. it would go toward bolstering legal rights, education and assistance, and to child and family support services. that move is in response to recent federal immigration policy changes and immigration raids. it all follows a recent state commitment, as well, of $25 million in new funding for legal related services and immigration support. uc berkeley is one of ten schos nationwide that could lose federal funds due to claims of anti-semitism. the chronicle reports that the department of justice created a list of schools that face funding reductions. the trump administration alleges the

schools created a hostile environment for jewish students and faculty. this comes after federal law enforcement announced an investigation of uc berkeley and four other schools last month. ucla and the university of southern california are also included on the list. the status of president donald trump's tariffs is changing every day, and now more tariffs could be coming as soon as tomorrow. abc news reporter selina wang, with details now from the white house. >> president trump threatening to impose steep tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber products as early as monday. he says it's in response to the high tax canada puts on american lumber and dairy to protect its own industries. the national association of home builders says even a 25% tariff on canadian lumber would increase the cost of building a new single family home by up to $10,000. i spoke with dennis woodruff, a lumber yard owner in maryland, who says his customers will have to pay more. >> i'm going to have to raise the prices because i can't sell

it for what it costs me. >> trump imposed tariffs on all imports from mexico and canada on tuesday last week. then the next day, the president announced a one month reprieve for the auto industry. by thursday, he delayed the tariffs on some other goods for one month. but this weekend, the president telling fox news that on april 2nd, the tariffs become reciprocal. >> this is short term, and i felt that for the good of the american carmakers and the mca, i thought it would be a fairca, thing to do. and so i gave them a little bit of a break for this short period of time. >> the president of the united auto workers union says he believes the tariffs on canada and mexico are an attempt to stop the bleeding. >> there is no single issue in this country that has affected our economy and working class people and their jobs than nafta, the usmca and our trade laws, our broken trade system. and we're in a crisis mode. >> some democrats say the tariffs are hurting the economy. >> these broad, indiscriminate and on again, off again tariffs

the l.a. county district attorney is expected to make an announcement about the menendez brothers case. we could learn whether d.a. nathan hochman will support or fight their resentencing effort. the brothers hope to be set free after being convicted of the 1989 murder of their parents.

their defense said they acted in self-defense after sexual abuse by their father. prosecutors say they killed for money. a resentencing hearing is scheduled for later this month, but governor newsom has asked the state parole board to conduct a risk assessment on the brothers ahead of a possible clemency hearing. in the south bay, san jose is gearing up to host this year's nvidia conference. 25,000 people are expected to be in town for the event. it's scheduled from monday, march 17th to friday, march 21st, and city officials say this will be a chance to activate san jose's downtown area and help small businesses. last year's conference was the first to be held in person since the pandemic, and had a $15.5 million economic impact. a special food feast today featuring crab, crab and more crab. check it out. fisherman's wharf celebrated national crab day with its first ever crab crawl. for about 70 bucks, people could savor six crab

delights from six different restaurants that stretched from pier 39 to aquatic park. they served up dishes that included traditional crab cakes and crab legs, to a seafood twist with crab curry. >> we're even promoting our local fisherman as well. it's still crab season out here. people are really seeming to enjoy it. the restaurants are loving it. we just want to bring people down to fisherman's wharf. >> the fact that they're there, having these types of events here in this, in san francisco, especially fisherman's wharf, where it's known for its crab. just looking forward to eating some some crab out of san francisco bay. >> i also love their crab headbands there. fisherman's wharf hopes to make the crab crawl an annual event. well, today was the kickoff to a bay area tradition. this season's rides on the niles canyon railway are underway. passengers hopped on board this morning's heritage train leaving from sunol, and the 80 minute round trip journey takes them through alameda county's historic niles canyon to fremont. that's where the train then turns around for a return trip through the

dollars $0.22 a dozen last month. that's according to the u.s. department of agriculture. that's about a 15% increase from the previous month. the department of agriculture says bird flu has affected more than 12 million birds in the last 30 days, and that includes 319,000 in california. the wall street journal reports that the department of justice has now launched an investigation into

large egg producers, pricing practices. and sorry to report this. it is not just eggs. coffee prices are at an all time high. in february, the cost of arabica coffee futures, which set the current price more than doubled from the same time last year. sfgate reports that price is being passed on to us, with several bay area cafes and roasters increasing prices. severe weather is blamed for taking a toll on global coffee bean harvests. boy everything's expensive. >> it really is. it really is. i can't cut back on the eggs, but i can cut back on the on the coffee. >> oh, i know sometimes to get ready for the 11 p.m, you and i have a. >> little, little cappuccino. >> just to stay awake. >> maybe tonight. let's take a look at what's going on with our weather. since the weather is blamed for everything that's going on right now. we have a look at the satellite radar image. you can see a few clouds moving in our direction, but high pressure is still the controlling factor. that's going to keep us dry for a couple more days. and right now it's pretty breezy. we've got

wind speeds between 15 and 20mph, generally across the bay area, and it's a little bit cooler by 4 or 5 degrees in most locations than at this time yesterday. so let's take a live view from sutro tower. looking out over the city where it's 56 degrees, we have upper 50s at oakland and hayward, 61 apiece at san jose and redwood city, and 54 at half moon bay. blue sky at the golden gate. breezy there as well. it's 59 degrees at santa rosa, petaluma 57, 58 and napa 59 at concord. fairfield 61, livermore the warm spot at 64. and these are the forecast headlines tomorrow and tuesday. we expect more mild and dry weather with a mix of sun and clouds. then wednesday, a rather significant level. two storm rolls in, bringing rainy and windy conditions, and then into next weekend. after that storm, the rain continues a rainy pattern all the way through the end of the week and into next weekend. for tonight, though, we'll just see a little bit of an increase in high clouds moving through the bay area and the clouds will linger into tomorrow morning, but the skies will be bright, so it will be a mix of high clouds and sunshine tomorrow. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the low to mid 40s, but some of our

inland locations will cool down to the chilly range. 36 at lakeport, 37 at santa rosa. lows of 39 at fairfield and livermore. then highs tomorrow about 60 on the coast, 65 here in san francisco. mid to upper 60s around the bay shoreline and mainly upper 60s to near 70 in many inland locations. we are calling for a high of 70 at san jose, but places like concord fairfield could also get up to about 70 degrees. now the storm that's approaching us is going to bring significant snow to the sierra. a winter storm watch will be in effect in the sierra from tuesday night through thursday night. above 4000ft. we expect expect about 12 to 18in of snow, 2 to 3ft of snow. in the higher elevations, wind gusts may reach 70mph. so obviously travel to that area and out of it will be difficult to impossible. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so good. so again a couple more days of dry weather. then on wednesday we get that rainy, windy storm. it's a level two storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. and for each day after that,

biggest potential players to get is off the market the niners have to deal with now this guy twice a year. espn says east palo alto native davante adams has agreed to a two year, $46 million deal with the la rams, 26 million guaranteed since the rams announced their intentions to trade star wide receiver cooper kupp earlier this offseason. that is basically the replacement, a record breaking nfl contract in the last couple of hours goes to firebaugh native and league mvp josh allen agrees to a six year, $330 million extension with the buffalo bills. 250 that's million guaranteed, the largest guaranteed money in nfl history. not bad for a guy that didn't receive a division one college offer out of high school. deion i covered him when he was going from junior college or college to the pros. he had to write emails to college coaches across the country, say, hey, give me a chance and give me a look. he had to go to junior college and then eventually went to wyoming and beat up on my fresno state bulldogs. and now look at him. >> now you know what it's
