one of its prized instruments is stolen. >> always live. abc7 news starts right now. >> good evening and thank you for joining us i'm dion lim. we are just about an hour away from a valley transportation authority strike that is likely to impact all of santa clara county. more than half of vta employees are planning to walk out just after midnight. that strike will affect bus and light rail service. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is in santa clara county and is following this developing story. >> you see this vta light rail train now, but come monday it's likely to be a different story. the atu local 265 union, representing 1500 rail and bus workers, has authorized a strike. >> we presented our best last final offer several days ago and the union has not responded, so we're waiting for them to come back to the negotiating table. >> vta cfo greg richardson spoke

on friday. first, he discussed the offer that vta has on the table, saying this. >> is a 9.3% wage increase over a three year period. >> then he addressed the union concerns, saying this. >> atus demand is for a 19.1% increase over three years. >> riders we talked with say no train service will impact them. >> definitely not good for us. it's going to be tough for the students at san jose state as well. >> my lifeline for not only paying for part of my tuition, but also getting around to do extracurriculars, is entirely reliant on vta. >> yeah, i would take an uber, but but ubers are expensive nowadays. >> i really don't think they should go on strike right now. >> bart caltrain and paratransit service will not be affected. those with vta say that on average, they serve 100,000 riders each weekday. >> we understand that this is a terrible situation for tens of thousands of people, and we regret that they may have to

find alternative ways to get where they need to go. >> a 19% pay increase would lead to layoffs and route cuts, according to those with vta. still, though, some riders we spoke with believe a solid raise should happen. >> i most definitely think that they should get a raise. they do work hard and i know it's not an easy job, especially with the homeless. i know sometimes they give them a hard time. >> we did reach out to numerous individuals with the atu local 265 union. none of them responded to our requests for interviews. in santa clara county, j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> also in san jose, 17 cars were impounded by police overnight, all suspected of taking part in sideshows around the city. police shared these videos of some of those cars being towed. investigators say they found one car abandoned and set on fire. firefighters put that fire out quickly before more harm could be done. police say the investigation is not over, and officers are working

to identify more people who took part in the sideshows. all right, turning to the weather, where it has felt a lot like spring this weekend. but that trend is going to be changing. let's get to spencer christian with your accuweather forecast. and when that rain arrives. spence. >> dion, that trend is winding down even as we speak, although tomorrow will be a mild day. so here's a look at your 24 hour day planner in the early morning hours before the sun rises. because we're on daylight saving time now, it will be partly cloudy, about 46 degrees around the bay and inland on the coast. inland, a little bit cooler at 42. on the coast, about 45 degrees. now, as we get to noon, we'll have a mix of clouds and sun. it will be relatively mild. the skies will be bright 60 degrees around the bay, 62 inland, mid 50s on the coast 4 p.m. not a lot of change. the skies will be a little bit brighter. temperatures in the upper 60s inland, mid 60s around the bay shoreline. so again another mild day and we'll have upper 50s on the coast. and then at 7 p.m. still bright because we're on daylight saving time about 62 degrees inland, 60 around the bay

shoreline, 53 on the coast. but as we get into tuesday, clouds will thicken. i'll tell you all about the rain coming our way a little bit later. dion. >> okay. sounds like a plan. spencer. thank you. and a reminder sfmta will continue work tomorrow on a water problem that's shut down the central subway tunnel. crewe repairing a leak at theel. crewe chinatown rose park station. that station, along with three others, will be shut down for repairs through march 14th. the t bus will replace trains while work continues. the clock is ticking down on san francisco's great highway. a two mile stretch will close, and much of it will transform from roadway to greenway. voters approved the closure last year, and now it will start becoming a reality in a matter of days. abc seven news reporter tara campbell says the city's newest park is getting mixed reaction. >> the sun will soon set on this two mile portion of san francisco's great highway. this thursday, marking the last day it will be open to vehicles

making way for the city's newest park, set to officially open april 12th. voters paving the way this past november with the passage of measure k. >> we lived on the street. we're pretty excited. >> but not everyone shares that excitement. the closure coming with a lot of controversy. among the critics concerns is congestion being pushed into neighborhood streets. >> it's going to create so many bottlenecks and traffic jams, and it will make it a lot harder for people. and i can't imagine what it will do for commuters. >> it's what what the voters voted for. i just i don't understand why they can't split the difference and use one of these roads as a two way roadway for vehicles and the other for pedestrians and bicyclists. >> opinions aplenty. and so, to the frustration, much of it aimed at sunset district supervisor joel ongaro, a supporter of the park and now the target of a recall campaign. >> i'm hearing from a lot of residents in the sunset that this recall is a waste of time

and money. they don't believe that someone should be recalled on a single issue. >> the supervisor, reassuring residents about traffic concerns. >> i've worked with our new mayor, mayor lurie, to make sure that we have key traffic improvements in place before any road closure, and we're seeing that already. new traffic lights replacing pain points where there were four way and three way stop signs. >> one of those changes is here at 41st avenue and lincoln way. it now has traffic signals, sloat and skyline boulevards too, with more changes at more locations to come. >> the new lights have only come online in the last week or so, and so sfmta, the traffic engineers, are going to be monitoring and making adjustments as needed. >> in the meantime, the city is turning to the community to help name the new park. you have until march 16th to submit your ideas, and on april 2nd, the winning name will be announced. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> uc berkeley is one of ten

schools nationwide that could lose federal funds due to claims of anti-semitism. the chronicle reports that the department of justice created a list of schools that face funding reductions. the trump administration alleges the schools created a hostile environment for jewish students and faculty. this all comes after federal law enforcement announced an investigation of uc berkeley and four other schools last month. ucla and the university of southern california are also included on that list. well, there is a great deal of uncertainty tonight over what president trump's next move will be with tariffs against mexico and canada. more could be imposed as early as tomorrow, but we have seen the white house abruptly pivot before. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> president trump offering no clarity following a confusing week in which he imposed and then postponed tariffs against canada and mexico. >> the tariffs could go up as time goes by, and they may go up. and you know, i don't know

if it's predictability. >> tariffs went into effect on all imports from mexico and canada last tuesday. the president then announcing a one month reprieve for the auto industry the next day. then on thursday delaying tariffs on other goods for one month as well. and now the president threatening to impose steep tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber as early as tomorrow. the administration says it is using these tariffs to launch a drug war against fentanyl coming across our borders, not a trade war with canada and mexico. >> as we've watched them make progress on the drug war. then we've relaxed some of the tariffs that we've put on them yet. >> less than 1% of fentanyl that enters the u.s. comes from canada. and mexico says seizures have declined 50% between october and january. abc's matt rivers was there as mexico's president claudia sheinbaum addressed the crowd at a planned

protest that became more of a celebration. >> thousands of people here in the heart of mexico city to hear from mexico's president and what was supposed to be a rally against u.s. tariffs, that's turned into a victory lap of sorts for her after those tariffs were postponed. >> democrats say trump's policies are only going to cause prices to go up. >> they're destroying the economy, and they're making it harder and harder for americans to afford things. >> the president has declined to rule out the possibility that we could sa recession. >> there is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big. it takes a little time. >> alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> developing news now from the white house. secret service personnel shot an armed man outside the residence early this morning. according to a spokesperson. agents received a tip about a person suffering from a mental health crisis traveling to d.c. from indiana. uniformed officers confronted that person, and that's when gunfire erupted. no one else was

hurt. the individual was taken to the hospital for treatment. his condition has not been released. president trump was not at the white house during the incident. people prayed today outside the hospital in rome where pope francis is being treated. he did start to show improvement yesterday as he recovers from double pneumonia, which has kept him in the hospital for more than three weeks. he has been unable to appear in public, but did pen a prayer today and thanked the hospital staff caring for him. the vatican says the 88 year old's prognosis is guarded, which means he is not out of danger just yet. still to come on abc seven news at 11. it's a san francisco church like no other, and now it needs help. the story behind a prized saxophone that was stolen. and an east bay neighborhood is bracing for a puppy apocalypse. the measures some homeowners are taking to keep a superbloom from creating super gridlock. and a

morning's heritage train leaving from sunol. the 80 minute round trip journey takes them through alameda county's historic niles canyon into fremont. that's where the train turns around for a return trip through the canyon. the experience is aimed at rekindling the romanticism of train travel. >> we have open cars, we have enclosed cars. so we have, you know, it's a completely changing environment. just when you walk from one end to the other. >> how neat. i want to try this. train rides are available on most weekends through october in walnut creek. neighborhood is bracing for crowds of visitors making the annual trek to see wildflower super blooms. in years past, they have overrun the neighborhood. but this weekend, neighbors think they've come up with a way to prevent that. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us not everyone, though, is happy about it. >> this is virginia. caught every single spot on the street is taken.

>> flower frenzy in this small walnut creek neighborhood. this video from last spring shows just how many people flocked to sutherland drive and virginia court to access shell ridge open space to see the california poppy super bloom. these images are from 2024. >> i mean, i can't describe to you the number. i mean, let's go 1500 cars every day on the weekends, probably in the springtime. >> neighbor elise fornaci says the photo spot likely began with a social media post going viral. >> and we cease to be a little walnut creek neighborhood entrance. you're in wall to wall like bumper to bumper traffic coming 100 yards up the street. >> so many nature enthusiasts trekked here. the neighborhood, located in unincorporated contra costa county, became worried about safety. >> we're concerned about fire danger with cars wrapped on both sides of the street. you can't. emergency vehicles can't come in. >> starting this weekend, a possible solution and compromise between the county and the city of walnut creek, where the open space is located. these signs

are posted. the neighborhood is now a temporary no parking zone on weekends unless you have a permit. visitors have to park outside the neighborhood and walk in. some people say they get it. >> makes sense. i you know, if i lived in this neighborhood, i would probably want some sort of restriction. it's peace and quiet. >> others? not so much. >> it's annoying. >> it seems a little like an overreach. >> the neighborhood association offering this qr code with alternative entrances to the open space. like how homestead park. nearly two dozen parking spaces here. and the entrance to the open space trail is right there. contra costa county supervisor ken carlson tells abc seven news. we are partnering with the city of walnut creek to provide a workable solution to protecting the safety and quality of life for residents, but also provide public access to the open space. i don't believe anyone anticipated the viral response to the wildflower bloom. neighbors say so far, the parking restrictions are working, but the real test will come later when the poppies

start to bloom. >> what we want is a way for everybody to be happy. and this is, you know, really it. >> in walnut creek. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> well, maybe the impending rain will be good for those flowers. >> i think it will be. we'll have another super bloom for sure. and the rain is coming. but not yet. here's a look at what's happening right now as you see that little low pressure system there developing just east of that high pressure system that's going to move that low. it's going to move into southern california. so the high is still going to be the dominant feature in bay area weather for the next couple of days, keeping us dry and mild weather tomorrow, at least before the clouds start to increase on tuesday. right now we're looking at really calm wind speeds under ten miles per hour all across the bay area, and the 24 hour temperature change is sort of a mixed bag. many locations are a couple of degrees cooler than at this time last night, but some locations on the peninsula and closer to the coast are a couple of degrees warmer. it's 50 degrees right now in san francisco and oakland, 49 in hayward, san jose, 5348 redwood city and 41 and half moon bay. dry and clear and calm conditions at the golden gate right now down

to 37. in petaluma 43. santa rosa 44. napa 45 at fairfield and livermore and concord 50 degrees. let's check out our forecast headlines tomorrow and tuesday. it will be mild and dry, a little bit cooler on tuesday than tomorrow, but still pretty mild with a mix of sun and clouds. wednesday though, it becomes rainy and windy. windy with a level two storm rolling in and then into next weekend. the rainy pattern will continue, so the forecast animation for tonight shows high clouds swinging by even at 5:00 tomorrow morning as the commute gets underway, there'll be lots of cloud cover, but we'll see the skies becoming brighter as the sun breaks through by mid-morning. overnight lows will be mainly in the low to mid 40s. high a high. highs tomorrow ranging from 60 at the coast to mid and upper 60s around the bay shoreline to upper 60s to near 70 in the mildest inland locations. and the sierra is going to get a lot of snow from the storm. that will bring us rainfall here in the bay area. so tuesday evening through thursday evening as a winter storm

watch in effect in the sierra, we may see 2 to 3ft of snow near the sierra. sierra crest wind gusts up to 70mph. obviously, driving conditions will be quite difficult to nearly impossible. a little bit cooler on tuesday than tomorrow. level two storm comes in on wednesday, bringing rainy and windy conditions. we'll have some pretty strong gusts and some heavy downpours. and then the rainy pattern continues with level one storms thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. we may get a break or two of sunlight at some points in here, but basically this is a wet pattern that will go on through next weekend. dionne. >> all right, spencer, thank you. well, still ahead tonight on abc seven news at 11, the special recognition today for an east bay building that is full of

finally received a long awaited distinction. the city's historic southern pacific train station

has been named a national historic landmark. preservationists and historians petitioned for the status over the course of years. built in 1912, the west oakland train station was america's gateway to the east bay in an era that pre-dated automobile and air travel. now, with that status secured, a new plaque unveiled out front. community members want to restore the abandoned building into its former glory. >> we need something tangible to sink our hearts into, to get behind. together, we have to continue building oakland, building this city. and we believe this station right here is that next building block in building this city. >> a community celebration was held in front of the station today to celebrate the station's new landmark status. well, the madness returns to las vegas during the wcc championship, all while the warriors are on milestone watch. let's get to chris alvarez now with a preview of sports. hey, chris. >> hey, dion. two bay area

other news starts right now. >> you're looking at the aftermath of a small plane crash in the parking lot of a retirement community in suburban pennsylvania. a single engine beechcraft bonanza went down this afternoon, causing this fiery crash. five people who were on board were rescued out of the wreckage and taken to nearby hospitals. no one, though on the ground, was injured. >> the fact that we have a plane crash where everybody survives and nobody on the ground is hurt is a is a wonderful thing. and anytime you have transportation, you always have risk when people are moving. but to have this type of ending right so far is a great day for us. >> yeah, what a miracle. the faa is investigating the cause. air traffic control audio captured the pilot, telling controllers he had to return to nearby lancaster's airport to land because of an open door. then the plane went down. seven on your side investigates has spent months reporting on california's

insurance crisis. more than a dozen insurers have dropped out of the market or restricted issuing new policies. maybe even your insurance company. so far, only usaa, nationwide, and allstate have engaged the state in possibly writing more policies. tonight, seven on your side stephanie sierra is uncovering the top reasons consumers are getting dropped and why it's raising serious questions about the process. >> california homeowners are getting dropped by insurance companies for some pretty bizarre reasons. i'll show you what i mean. we're in san francisco's potrero hilln neighborhood. policyholders here are getting dropped, citing aerial footage like this. everything from having mold and algae on their roof, which is not there, to having a pool in their backyard to something as simple as having a storage shed on their property. well, as we found out, the list of non-renewals is growing and may surprise you. from the city to

the countryside. thehe city to relationship between california homeowners and insurance companies is starting to feel like a bad romance. just ask susan gadbois and her goats. >> this is poncho. >> she lives on a farm in penngrove, a small sonoma county town. >> we do everything ourselves. >> in an attempt to impress triple a, she invested $44,000 to fireproof her home with a new high grade roof, gutter guards and stone around her home. not to mention. >> they keep the grass down and eat a bunch of brush. >> yet triple a. >> they just said, you know, we're dropping you. >> no text, no call. the cold rejection came in this letter like a bad breakup. after more than 30 years of timely payments and zero claims. >> i've been a loyal customer of yours, and now you're going to dump me. i was really upset. >> even her goat sugar had to shake it off. and the worst part? triple a cited a slew of reasons that didn't even exist.

so the primary reason they dropped you was because of cardboard? >> yes. apparently triple a got a google photo. >> yet the company did not even realize the google earth images cited were two years old. >> by the time we got their letter. >> yard had already been remodeled. >> it was totally clean. we invited them to come out here. >> but they refused, forcing susan to fight to get her coverage back. >> most people don't argue. >> but sometimes arguing doesn't work. >> unfortunately, we are unable to continue coverage. >> like in the case of san francisco homeowner andrew petruzelli. >> so they got a plumber. >> he got dropped from farmers insurance due, to, quote, a nearby toilet that wasn't even in his unit. >> in february, my neighbor's bathroom went awry and leaked into my bathroom. >> farmers told them the losses, quote, exceeded our acceptability limits. >> they're saying that i had too many claims. >> and that number. >> is. >> two, right?

>> he says farmers did not even pay the claims, but still dropped him and refused to tell him why. >> and they just kept giving me phone numbers. and finally i reached this guy and he said, there's nothing you can do about it. >> yet the company had no problem taking his money for the past 27 years. >> but once you're burnt, you sort of like, get a little sour. >> and consumers all across the bay area are getting dropped for some pretty bizarre reasons, like having a pool on their property, a small branch touching their house. this woman dropped for having a second barbecue on her property. this man dropped for, quote, outdated paint on his house. >> i'm infuriated. you can't see one mark of discoloration. anything. >> seven on your side reviewed more than a thousand cases, and our team found a common pattern. most people were dropped over issues that simply didn't exist or were disproven, including roof issues that were never there, autopay issues. yet they've never missed a payment. but arguably the worst is when insurers are caught in their own

words, like in the case of paul hunter, who was dropped citing his property did not meet the insurer's wildfire risk assessment guidelines. yet the company's own report lists his property risk at zero. it's that fear of rejection, not knowing who to trust. some prefer tong stay single, bracing for their last resort option, while others are forced to get back on the market. if that's you, there are some tips to help. in susan's case, her redwood trees. >> they have tannins and they don't burn. >> and the agave on her property. something that is really fire resistant. >> so what can you do to fireproof your home? we spent the day with a company that specializes in disaster resistant. >> structures like this one to find out. >> through here. >> dan schoenfeld is the ceo of ultratech doctors, a bay area based company that builds concrete homes. >> they have concrete embedded in the inside of the blocks.

>> the walls have insulation on both sides, built with six inches of concrete inside, topped off with what's called use stucco. >> plus there's engineered rebar, which is steel pipes. >> so we're inside the build of this concrete home. >> yes. >> if a fire were to threaten this home, would it survive? and for how long? >> yes, the home would absolutely survive. it actually be up to eight hours of fire resistance on one of our houses, as opposed to most other materials like wood or metal or anything like that, that only has about a half an hour of resistance. >> it's how tom hanks $26 million cliffside mansion survived the pacific palisades fire. it was reinforced with concrete and a fire resistant roof. >> it's poured concrete walls. >> or how this home in florida was the only structure in the neighborhood to survivein the hurricane michael. it's concrete build can sustain up to 240 mile per hour winds.

>> first i thought it was. i think they had the violinist out there. i thought it was part oft her routine because i was like, she was doing all the covers of songs and stuff, so i thought it was like a grand finale. so i was like, oh, that's that's aggressive. and then. you kind of realize it's real, and then nobody knows what to do because it's 19,000 people. like, where do you go? none of us wanted to go back in the locker room and have to, you know, get stiff and have to come back out and get warmed up. so thankfully, everybody was safe. and so that was a first for me for sure. in any, any level of basketball. >> yeah, i was there. it was weird. the santa cruz warriors played their annual home game at chase center today. trace jackson davis currently out of the warriors rotation but got some minutes today with the c dubs. turned out a nice performance. nearly a double double 22 points eight rebounds. head coach steve kerr says it's all about being ready for the next opportunity.
