major change happening later this week and when the area will reopen as the city's newest park. >> monday came an hour early this week. daylight saving time began over the weekend, making the amount of daylight we get a bit longer. >> and really messing with our schedules. good morning. it's march. >> 10th and we're going to turn to drew beautiful over the weekend. >> yeah, it really was. and we'll hang on to that mild air for one more day before we track rain here. the middle part of the week. so outside this morning a live look from our sutro tower camera. we do have calm conditions out there. some high clouds will be streaming in from time to time. today is going to be a partly cloudy day, but it will feel nice again this afternoon. looking at those current temperatures, we are starting out on a chilly note. 30s and 40s right now. 38 in santa rosa. we're at 43 in oakland this morning. 39 in gilroy. 44 right now, that current temperature in san mateo. so looking at future weather, you notice a couple of things. first, we have a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. temperatures are on the cool side first thing. and then

we'll find some warmer air streaming in here by the middle part of the day. we're in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. and then look at this afternoon we will have temperatures above average for this time of the year. so another mild afternoon on the way. but then tomorrow and especially into wednesday cooler weather does work into the picture. so highs mid and upper 60s. now with the time change. look your sunset coming at 713 this evening. now we'll talk about the return of some rain here on wednesday coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with gloria on the commute this morning. >> good morning. yeah. we're going to get started with ak at your overall map here. you see mostly green. we do have some slower traffic right now though in the altamont pass where you see the red there. we also want to tell you about an incident in mountain view. we are getting reports on northbound 101 before shoreline boulevard about a three car crash there. all lanes just reopened, but this was a big deal there. a big rig blocked all lanes. again, though, these lanes have just reopened, so hopefully things get back to normal in this area. looking live at our golden gate bridge

camera, you can see the traffic is flowing nicely h. you won't have any delays as you head from the north bay to san francisco. reggie aqui. >> thank you gloria. now to the commuter alert that is sure to impact a lot of people this morning vta. union workers are on strike after their contract with the transit agency expired. now, if you take the bus or light rail, you're going to need to figure out a different way to get to work or school today. abc seven news reporter lena howland live at a vta yard in san jose with what we can all expect this morning. lena. >> hey, reggie. well, riders can expect to see that there will be no vta bus or light rail service during this strike. we are at the vta rail yard right now where you can see behind me. workers are already out here picketing. they've been out here for about an hour since 4:00 this morning. the strike by the atu local 265 union, representing 1500 rail and bus workers, took effect at midnight. the union includes bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers, fare inspectors and customer

service representatives. they claim vta has failed to address things like fair wages, benefits and grievance procedures. and they also say vta has failed to improve workplace conditions since the 2021 mass shooting at a vta rail yard, which killed nine union members. this will affect quite a few people. vta says that on average, they serve 100,000 riders each weekday. >> my lifeline for not only paying for part of my tuition, but also getting around to do extracurriculars, is entirely reliant on vta. >> there's not been any direction from their side to at least recognize that something has to change from their request, and until they're able to do that, there's nothing more that we can do. >> vta did not offer any new interviews last night, but sent out that edited video statement you just saw. vta is offering the union a 9.3% increase over the next three years in wages.

while the atu workers are demanding a 19.1 increase over the next three years. but vta says an increase that high would lead to layoffs and route cuts. for now, reporting live in san jose. lena howland, abc seven news. lena howland, abc seven >> all right, lena, thank you. uc berkeley is one of ten schools nationwide that could lose federal funds due to claims of anti-semitism. according to the chronicle, the department of justice created a list of schools facing funding reductions. the trump administration alleges the schools created a hostile environment for jewish students and faculty. this comes after federal law enforcement announced an investigation of uc berkeley and four other universities last month. ucla and usc are also included on the list. president trump could impose steep new tariffs on dairy and lumber coming from canada as soon as today. and gloria, the president, is trying to downplay the impact, despite economists warning this trade war could be leading the u.s. to a recession. >> amanda. the new tariffs

on canada could be tough to swallow. we're talking about as much as 250% on dairy, and that's similar to the tariff that u.s. producers pay to export dairy to canada. now, this is the latest development in a trae war that has caused whiplash for the american economy. 25% tariffs on goods from canada and mexico started on tuesday, as well as an additional 10% tax on imports from china. on wednesday, trump announced that he'd exclude the auto industry. then on thursday, he announced a one month pause on all tariffs for mexico and canada. friday is when he floated the new tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber. the president admitted over the weekend that americans are feeling the impact of his trade war with rising prices. however, he will not agree with economists who say the trade war is leading america into a recession. >> there is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big. it takes a little time. >> in mexico and canada, leaders are fighting back against the

tariffs. a massive protest in mexico city turned into a victory celebration after tariffs were postponed. yesterday, canada elected a new prime minister and he's promising to beat trump at the trade war. reggie. >> gloria. thank you. a reminder sfmta is going to continue work on a water problem that shut down the central subway tunnel. crews are repairing a leak at the chinatown rose park station. that station, along with three others, will be shut down fore repairs through friday. the t bus will be replacing trains while that work continues. the clock is ticking down in san francisco's great highway. a two mile stretch will soon close down for good, and much of that will transform from a roadway to a greenway. voters approved the closure last year. abc seven news reporter tara campbell says the city's newest park is getting mixed reaction. >> the sun will soon set on this two mile portion of san francisco's great highway this thursday, marking the last day it will be open to vehicles

making way for the city's newest park, set to officially open april 12th. voters paving the way this past november with the passage of measure k. >> we lived on the street. we're pretty excited. >> but not everyone shares that excitement. the closure coming with a lot of controversy. among the critics concerns is congestion being pushed into neighborhood streets. >> it's going to create so many bottlenecks and traffic jams, and it will make it a lot harder for people. and i can't imagine what it will do for commuters. >> it's what what the voters voted for. i just i don't understand why they can't split the difference and use one of these roads as a two way roadway for vehicles and the other for pedestrians and bicyclists. >> opinions aplenty. and so, to the frustration, much of it aimed at sunset district supervisor joel engardio, a supporter of the park and now the target of a recall campaign. >> i'm hearing from a lot of residents in the sunset that this recall is a waste of time

and money. they don't believe that someone should be recalled on a single issue. >> the supervisor, reassuring residents about traffic concerns. >> i've worked with our new mayor, mayor lurie, to make sure that we have key traffic improvements in place before any road closure, and we're seeing that already. new traffic lights replacing pain points where there were four way and three way stop signs. >> one of those changes is here at 41st avenue and lincoln way. it now has traffic signals. sloat and skyline boulevards too, with more changes at more locations to come. >> the new lights have only come online in the last week or so, and so sfmta, the traffic engineers, are going to be monitoring and making adjustments as needed. >> in the meantime, the city is turning to the community to help name the new park. you have until march 16th to submit your ideas, and on april 2nd, the winning name will be announced. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> thanks, tara. 509 this morning we're looking at live

♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ when shoppers and workers at a car dealership in inglewood, they were standing there as a car drove through the showroom. eight people got hurt, two of

them critically. according to carmax, the driver of that car was unhappy with an appraisal offer he got on saturday. so he got into his car. he reversed through the front doors, turn inside the lobby and people were running for cover. this whole time. then he sped out the other side. police eventually caught up to the man and arrested him. >> the owners of san jose camera and video in campbell are turning to the public to help. a recent burglary at the shop. now these are photos of the damage left behind after a break in last week. staff say gates, doors and windows were all destroyed when a car drove through the front door. an employee who didn't want to go on camera told us burglaries at the store aren't new, but they are getting to be a bit more brazen. >> we've had a great case. we've actually had people break into the back. we've have a taken a lot of steps into keeping it secured so they can't break into the back anymore. but now they've gone through the front.

>> the owners say new and used camera gear was stolen. they say insurance will cover some of the cost, but it won't replace everything. san jose is gearing up to host this year's nvidia conference later this month. 25,000 people are expected to be in town for the event. it kicks off one week from today. city officials say it's a chance to activate san jose's downtown area and help small businesses. last year's conference was the first to be held in person since the pandemic. it had a $15.5 million economic impact. >> niles canyon railway has launched its 2025 season of train rides between sonoma and fremont over the weekend. the season's first passengers hopped on the historic heritage train to take the 80 minute round trip journey through alameda county's historic niles canyon into fremont. that's where the train turns around for a return return trip through the canyon. the experience is aimed at rekindling the romanticism of train travel. >> we have open cars, we have

enclosed cars. so we have, you know, it's a completely changing environment. just when you walk from one end to the other. >> train rides are available on most weekends through october, and in walnut creek, a neighborhood is bracing for crowds of visitors making the annual trek to see these wild flowers super blooms. in years past, they've overrun the neighborhood over the weekend. neighbors think they've come up with a way to prevent that. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us not everyone is so happy about it. >> this is virginia. caught every single spot on the street is taken. >> flower frenzy in this small walnut creek neighborhood. this video from last spring shows just how many people flocked to sutherland drive and virginia court to access shell ridge open space to see the california poppy super bloom. these images are from 2024. >> i mean, i can't describe to you the number. i mean, let's go 1500 cars every day on the weekends, probably in the springtime. >> neighbor elise fornaci says the photo spot likely began with

a social media post going viral. >> and we ceased to be a little walnut creek neighborhood entrance. you're in wall to wall like bumper to bumper traffic coming 100 yards up the street. >> so many nature enthusiasts trekked here. the neighborhood, located in unincorporated contra costa county, became worried about safety. >> we're concerned about fire danger with cars wrapped on both sides of the street. you can't. emergency vehicles can't come in. >> starting this weekend, a possible solution and compromise between the county and the city of walnut creek, where the open space is located. these signs are posted. the neighborhood is now a temporary no parking zone on weekends unless you have a permit. visitors have to park outside the neighborhood and walk in. some people say they get it. >> makes sense. i you know, if i lived in this neighborhood, i would probably want some sort of restriction. it's peace and quiet. >> others, not so much. >> it's annoying. >> it seems a little like an overreach. >> the neighborhood association

offering this qr code with alternative entrances to the open space. like how homestead park. nearly two dozen parking spaces here. and the entrance to the open space trail is right to there. contra costa county supervisor ken carlson tells abc seven news. we are partnering with the city of walnut creek to provide a workable solution to protecting the safety and quality of life for residents, but also provide public access to the open space. i don't believe anyone anticipated the viral response to the wildflower bloom. neighbors say so far, the parking restrictions are working, but the real test will come later when the poppies start to bloom. >> what we want is a way for everybody to be happy. and this is, you know, really it. >> in walnut creek. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> if the weekend felt like it flew by like it was shorter. that's because it was daylight saving time. sent our clocks ahead an hour. we lost an hour early yesterday morning, but it does mean we get an extra hour of sunlight. you may recall voters here in california deciding to do away with the

means our sun is coming up here later this morning at around 730. because of the time change, here are the accuweather headlines. mild today. it's a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures in the 60s and 70s midweek. we're calling it messy around here because we'll have rain returning to the forecast. wind, snow on our highest peaks, and some rough surf along our coast. and the extended outlook. we're keeping rain chances into the upcoming weekend, so the pattern gets pretty active starting here on wednesday. today though, it's chilly this morning, 30s and 40s, and as we head later throughout the day by 11 a.m, we're getting those temperatures into the 50s. so a little slow to warm. but once we get into the afternoon, it will feel quite nice in the 60s and low 70s so mild today. 65 in the city we'll hit 70 in san jose, about 66 in oakland, the same in napa along the coast, half moon bay to santa cruz, low to mid 60s overnight. tonight we remain dry. partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 30s and in the 40s. tomorrow you'll feel that cooler air move in here. temperatures start to dip a bit, but by wednesday,

morning tracy to dublin 44 minutes san rafael to san francisco 16 minutes. in antioch to concord 15 minutes. >> number seven volkswagen is bringing back physical buttons to all its vehicles, including for heat, volume and ac. vw is top designer, says customers have been fed up with smart screens, taking over dashboards. california wildlife officials are suggesting an interesting solution to an invasive species problem. this is a look at the post by the u.s. fish and wildlife department and it reads eat me, please. i'm invasive and delicious. the fish and wildlife service debuted their new campaign slogan, save a swamp, saute a nutria as part of their effort to save the delta. that's right. they are suggesting people trap and cook nutria. they are rodents from south america, smaller than beavers, but bigger than groundhogs. the creatures have been weakening levees in california with their burrowing habits. wildlife officials even go as far as

significant bump in pay, but that's not all. take a look here behind me. you can see them onre the picket line. these workers also want to see better benefits and improved grievance procedures. keep in mind, this is the first time they've been out on strike since the 1960s. this means there will be no vta bus or light rail service starting today. the hq local 265 union is made up of bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers, fare inspectors and customer service representatives. on top of more pay, they say vta has failed to improve workplace conditions since the 2021 mass shooting at a vta rail yard, which killed nine union members. vta did not offer any new interviews last night, but sent out an edited video statement last night. >> and so a short term solution to meet a demand today is not something we want to do when we know that the long term impact is going to affect our customers, even even more. >> not good for us. it's going

d.a. nathan hochman will support or fight the resentencing effort of eric and lyle menendez. they've been serving life in prison for killing their parents in 1989. their defense team says they acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father. prosecutors say they killed for money. the previous d.a. was petitioning to have the brothers resentenced to 50 years to life, which would have made them immediately eligible for parole. he lost an election in november, and the new d.a. has taken time to assess the case. a resentencing a resentencing hearing is set for next week. however, it is likely to be delayed because governor newsom had asked the state parole board to conduct a risk assessment on the brothers. hochman is considering clemency for them. today's announcement is set for 10 a.m, and we will have that for you live in our abc seven news app and abc seven news.com. amanda. >> all right gloria thank you. >> new developments this morning on pope francis health as he enters week four of recovery from a double pneumonia infection. the pope is showing

from the dominican republic with your gma first look i'm erielle reshef abc news punta cana. >> the faa is investigating a plane crash that rocked a retirement community in suburban pennsylvania. you are looking at the moments after a single engine airplane crashed into a parking lot and burst into flames yesterday. fortunately, all five plane passengers survived and no witnesses were hurt. >> i could see it kind of teetering and kind of making movements like this, and it was headed straight for the assisted living facility that was right across the street from the airport. it lasted about five seconds, and then it disappeared. and i just saw a black cloud of smoke come up. >> authorities have not revealed the extent to which the passengers were injured, but we do know all five have been hospitalized and two passengers are being treated for burns. a viral video from stockton has launched a police investigation and inspired a councilwoman to take action. this video, which
