it's having this morning. >> plus, uncertainty surrounding the president's new tariffs, the impact it's expected to have on the wallets of all of us. why the president isn't ruling out the possibility of a recession. >> then the countdown is on. we are just days away from the great highway officially closing for traffic. how people are feeling about the change. >> good morning. it's monday, march 10th. >> yeah. first we'll turn to drew for a look at the forecast. >> nice. today we continue some of that mild air from the weekend, and then will be bringing back rain to the forecast by about wednesday. so here's a live look from sutro tower this morning where currently we are seeing partly cloudy skies. calm winds out there. just an easy start to the week before we track that storm moving in by wednesday. right now temperatures are typical chill for this time of the morning. we're beginning in the 30s and in the 40s. 39 in sonoma, but 48 in the city. good morning, san jose 45. we're down to 38 in danville right now. so here's a look at future weather. we'll call it filtered sunshine. partly cloudy conditions throughout the day because of

the time change. remember, your sunrise now is later closer to 730 this morning as you head towards lunchtime. temperatures in the upper 50s near 60 degrees, but the afternoon will feature mild weather. look at that 60s on the board. your sunset this evening is at 7:13 p.m. so looking at highs today, one more mild day before cooler weather moves in here tomorrow. and then that stormy weather is back here on wednesday. a close look at those changes coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria. see how it's going. >> good morning. it is crowded at the bay bridge toll plaza. right now. we're looking at a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. and the metering lights came on about 538 this morning. you can see the traffic is pretty backed up, though in those middle lanes there. it's backed up to about the end of the parking lot. carpool lanes, as always, move a little quicker so you won't have any issues if you are carpooling. highway four to san francisco 50 minutes right now and looking live at our san jose 87 camera. not as busy down here in the south bay right now. traffic is flowing nicely in both directions. you

can see those taillights heading towards the airport in san jose, but no issues. as you drive towards san francisco. >> now we have a commuter alert that is going to impact a lot of people in the south bay this morning. vta union workers are on strike after the contract with the transit agency expired overnight. if you take the bus or light rail, you're going to need to figure out a different way to get to work or school. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at vta yard in san jose, with what you can expect this morning. lena. >> yeah, reggie. there will be no vta bus or light rail service during this strike. we are at the vta yard right now where you can see behind me here. these workers are already out on the picket line. they have been out here for about two hours now since 4:00 this morning. the strike by the atu local 265 union, representing 1500 rail and bus workers, took effect at midnight. this union includes bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers, fare inspectors and customer

service representatives. they claim vta has failed to address things like fair wages, benefits and grievance procedures. and they also say vta has failed to improve workplace conditions since the 2021 mass shooting at a vta rail yard, which killed nine people. this will affect quite a few people. vta says that on average, they serve 100,000 riders each weekday. moments ago, i talked to a union leader who said while they apologize for the disruption to service, they're asking for the community's support during this time. >> but i hope that they still support at 265 and reach out to the board of directors and the mayor saying that we need a fair contract. >> there has not been any direction from their side to at least recognize that something has to change from their request, and until they're able to do that, there's nothing more that we can do. >> reporter the. >> vta did not offer any new interviews last night, but sent

out that edited video statement you just saw. vta is offering the union a 9.3% increase over the next three years. while the atu workers are demanding a 19.1 increase over three years. vta says an increase that high would lead to layoffs and cuts to service. live in san jose lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. president trump could impose steep new tariffs on dairy and lumber coming from canada as soon as today. gloria, the president is trying to downplay the impact, despite economists warning that this trade war could be leading the u.s. to a recession. >> and when we're talking about the new tariffs on canada, we're talking about as much as 250% on dairy. that is similar to the tariff that u.s. producers pay to export dairy to canada. this is the latest development in a trade war that has caused whiplash for the american economy. 25% tariffs on goods from canada and mexico started on tuesday, as well as an additional 10% tax on imports

from china. on wednesday, trump announced that he'd exclude the auto industry. then on thursday, he announced a one month pause on all tariffs for mexico and canada. friday is when he floated the new tariffs on canadian dairy and lumber. the president admitted over the weekend that americans are feeling the impact of his trade war with rising prices, and he's not ruling out a recession. >> there is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big. it takes a little time. in mexico and canada, leaders are fighting back against the tariffs. a massive protest in mexico city turned into a victory celebration after tariffs were postponed. yesterday, canada elected a new prime minister and his prime. he's promising to beat trump at the trade war. amanda. >> all right gloria, thank you. and we are learning lawmakers want to force the trump administration to rehire veterans who were laid off from their federal jobs. two democratic lawmakers plan to introduce the protect veteran

jobs act in the senate today. it's an effort to reinstate veterans impacted by recent mass layoffs. the bill would also require the trump administration to provide a quarterly report to congress on the number of veterans removed from the federal workforce and the justification for their firing. more cuts could be coming to the u.s. agency that provides weather updates nationwide. there are reports the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, widely known as noaa, could cut more than 1000 workers in a second round of layoffs. this is on top of the 1300 that have already been fired from the agency in recent weeks. there is concern the layoffs could have devastating impacts nationwide as we enter hurricane and other disaster seasons. noaa managers have been asked to complete their proposals by tomorrow. $25,000 severance packages are being offered to some federal employees to voluntarily leave the federal workforce. it's part of president trump's efforts to

shrink the size of the federal government. bloomberg reports workers at the department of health and human services got emails from the department of government efficiency offering the buyouts. workers in the department of education and social security administration have also received similar notices. the workers are being told they have until friday to make their decision. >> a heads up for drivers. a two mile stretch of the great highway is set to permanently close to cars for good later this week. thursday is going to be the last day for cars on the section of the road before its turn into the city's newest park. voters approved the plan in november when they passed measure k. some residents are excited to see this new park. others are still concerned about the potential traffic impact on side streets. that was an argument used against the permanent closure from the beginning. >> it's going to create so many bottlenecks and traffic jams, and it will make it a lot harder for people. and i can't imagine what it will do for commuters.

>> sunset district supervisor joel engardio has been working to address these concerns. new traffic signals and other changes are being made in the area. the new park officially opens april 12th. a reminder sfmta is going to continue work on a water problem that has shut down the central subway. crews are repairing a leak at the chinatown rose park station. that station, along with three others, will be shut down for repairs through friday. the t bus will be a replacement while work continues. >> 608 we are wrapping up what was a wonderful weekend. we had warm sunshine. we'll hang on to the mild air for one more day before we start to see rain and wind back in the forecast. live doppler seven. along with satellite, there's an area of low pressure that will go into southern california, but it will bring us some clouds from time to time. today it's filtered sunshine on your monday with some mild air. now, because of the time change, your sunrise is later this morning closer to 730. it is chilly right now, but with that mix of sun and clouds

san francisco musician is in critical condition following a shooting. rapper stacy gilton, otherwise known as lil ye, was shot twice in the chest at a credit the rappers studio on the 4500 block of melrose avenue in la. la police are still investigating the incident, and have not ruled out that another rapper may have planned it, according to the chronicle. the rapper is signed to san francisco's empire records. terrifying moments for shoppers and workers at a carmax dealership in inglewood. a car drove through the showroom and eight people were hurt during all of this, two of them critically. so here's the video. according to carmax, the driver of that car was unhappy with an appraisal offer he received saturday. he got into his car. look at this. reversed through the front door, then turned around inside. people were running for cover as this driver

sped out the other side. police eventually arrested the man. the owners of san jose camera and video in campbell are turning to the public for help with a recent burglary at their shop. these are photos of the damage left behind after a break in last week. staff say gates, doors and windows all destroyed when a car drove through the front door. an employee who didn't want to go on camera told us burglaries at the store aren't new, but they are getting more brazen. >> we've had break-ins. we've actually had people break into the back. we've have a taken a lot of steps into keeping it secured so they can't break into the back anymore. but now they've gone through the front. >> the owners say new and used camera gear was stolen. and they say insurance will cover some of it, but it won't replace everything. san jose is gearing up to host this year's nvidia conference later this month. 25,000 people are expected to be in town for that. that kicks off a week from today. city officials say it's a chance to

activate san jose's downtown area, activate the space, y'all, and help small businesses. last year's conference had a $15.5 million economic impact. a viral nature spot is causing havoc for a small walnut creek community. shell ridge open space is a prime viewing location to see the california poppy super bloom. all that buzz is super annoying for residents living on sutherland drive and virginia court. excited nature lovers taking over and making parking a bit of a nightmare for neighbors. >> you know, it's a quiet neighborhood. it's not a state park. it's not a national park. it's not a shopping mall. and there's a way. what we want is a way for everybody to be happy. and this is, you know, really it. >> contra costa county is stepping in to broker poppy peace. now you need a permit to park in the neighborhood over the weekend. visitors have to park outside the neighborhood and walk in. and the neighborhood association has

accuweather headlines. mild today. a mix of sun and clouds. it's a messy midweek here as a next storm system moves in here with rain, wind, rough surf and some snow. and then the extended outlook. we will keep rain in the forecast through the upcoming weekend. so the morning planner shows you it's quiet, it's chilly, we have partly cloudy skies and it will be just a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning. planner. we're into the 60s by about noon, remember, because the sun is rising later due to the time change. the warming is a little bit slower, but it will be a nice afternoon. look at these daytime highs very similar to where we were this weekend. will hang on to that mild air for one more day. your sunset this evening at 713. tonight we keep it dry. we keep it partly cloudy overnight. lows again in the 30s and in the 40s. now tomorrow rain is still holding off for another day. but you notice cooler air starts to move in here. so not as mild on our tuesday. and then it's just chilly on wednesday as that storm system moves in here with heavy rain at times and some

gusty winds. so here's a look at future weather. we begin wednesday morning with scattered light showers in the forecast. likely the downpours. the heavy rain will hold off until the afternoon. so here's 2 p.m. we will track those downpours and they do continue into the evening. rainfall estimates for most between a half of an inch and an inch of rain coming our way on wednesday. some higher totals in the santa cruz mountains and in the north bay, where some areas could pick up more than an inch of rain. this will be a major snowstorm in the sierra. a winter storm watch has been posted. snow levels are pretty low, down to 4000ft, so we could see 2 to 3ft of snow in many locations. and on our highest peaks we could see four feet of snow. so this is one of those storm systems that could certainly shut down freeways for a time as that heavy snow falls. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you partly cloudy and mild today. cooler tomorrow, rain and wind here on wednesday. and then that wet pattern does continue on and off through the upcoming

number of measles cases continues to grow nationwide. according to the cdc, the number of cases jumped by 34% last week. that has medical experts warning about the outbreak that has already been linked to two deaths in the united states.

u.s. cases rose from 58 to 222 since the beginning of the year. 12 states are reporting cases, including california. texas is the hardest hit state, with the first u.s. reported death in a decade. cbs is planning to open a dozen new stores nationwide, but the company is scaling back, and the new locations will be mini versions of the stores you're used to. the announcement was first reported by the new york times. the stores are expected to be half the size of typical cbs locations. the concept is to help crack down on declining sales and thefts at several locations. they will have health related products such as over-the-counter cough and pain medications and first aid care. but missing from these locations a greeting cards, groceries and nail polish. the 12 new stores are expected to open over the next year in cities throughout the u.s. another mega deal in the sports world, money that most of us could never imagine spending. nfl mvp josh allen was rewarded

with a contract extension worth $330 million, including an nfl record $250 million of it guaranteed, which makes him among the league's highest paid players. the new deal adds two years to allen's contract and locks the 28 year old in through 2030 that season. the total value of allen's new contract ranks second, behind kansas city's patrick mahomes, who signed a ten year, $450 million deal in 2020. there are just a few episodes left of this season of the bachelor, and tonight it's the bachelor. women tell all where grant ellis will face all of his exes. but will there be drama? will things get hashed out? grant gave us a little preview. >> going into tonight. just expecting, honestly, a reunion. you know, i have so much love for everybody involved. and, you know, these are ladies that i've grown with. it's to tell all. there's going to be some drama there. there's going to be some

lower 70s. but rain does come back into the forecast starting on wednesday. we'll talk about that in seven minutes. let's check in with gloria, see how the commute. >> good morning. traffic definitely building this time of the morning. we're going to get started with a look at your drive times for today tracy to dublin 56 minutes in the red. so definitely slow out there. dublin mission boulevard south 21 minutes, one on one to cupertino 16 minutes. and looking live at our bay bridge camera here you can see it is pretty busy there. on the upper deck we have those metering lights that are still on right now, looking at about 65 minutes. if you're driving from highway four to san francisco. >> all right, gloria, thank you. now to the commuter alert. we're tracking in the south bay. there is no vta bus or light rail service in santa clara county this morning after workers went on strike overnight. and it means tens of thousands of people will need a different plan for the commute today. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in san jose, where picketing is already underway. lena. >> yeah. amanda. that's right. i just talked to some union

leaders who are picketing here at the vta yard. you can see them here behind me, sort of having a team huddle. but they have been out here on the picket lines for about 2.5 hours since 4:00 this morning. they tell me they do want to see a significant bump in pay, but they also want to see better benefits, improved grievance procedures and more. keep in mind, this is the first time they've been out on strike since the 1960s. this means there will be no vta bus or light rail service starting today. the atu local 265 union is made up of bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers, fare inspectors and customer service representatives on top of more pay. they say vta has failed to improve workplace conditions since the 2021 mass shooting at a vta rail yard, which killed nine union members. vta did not offer any new interviews yesterday, but sent out an edited video statement last night. >> and so a short term solution to meet a demand today is not

something we want to do when we know that the long term impact is going to affect our customers, even even more. >> it's not about the wages. there's also the arbitration language that vta within the last year and a half, they decided they will not take cases to arbitration. it's just a fair process. and that's all we're looking for is a fair process to uh- dispute resolution within. and that's the stuff that we're here to protect the members. >> and that was a union leader who we just talked to this morning saying for them, this is not just about the money, but the impacts of this will be felt across the board. vta says that on average, they serve 100,000 riders each weekday. vta is offering the union a 9.3% wage increase over the next three years. while the atu workers are demanding a 19.1% increase over three years, something vta officials say would lead to

layoffs and service cuts. now, vta says that both parties met yesterday, but there were no meaningful negotiations. live in san jose. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. today could be a pivotal day for the future of the menendez brothers. the l.a. county district attorney has scheduled an announcement in their case. and, gloria, this is expected to be a key moment in their fight to be freed. >> yes. today we could learn whether l.a. county da nathan hochman will support or fight the resentencing effort of eric and lyle menendez. they've been serving life in prison for killing their parents in 1989, and their defense team says that they acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father. prosecutors say they killed for money. the previous da was petitioning to have the brothers resentenced to 50 years to life, which would have made them immediately eligible for parole. he lost an election in november, and the new da has taken time to assess the case. a resentencing hearing is set for next week. however, it is likely to be delayed because governor

newsom has asked the state parole board to conduct a risk assessment on the brothers. hochman is considering clemency for them. today's announcement is set for 10:00 this morning, and we'll have that for you live on our abc seven news app. also, abc seven news.com. amanda. >> all right. gloria, thank you. >> the faa is investigating a plane crash that rocked a retirement community in suburban pennsylvania. you are looking at the moments after a single engine airplane crashed into a parking lot and burst into flames yesterday. fortunately, all five plane passengers survived and no witnesses were hurt. >> i could see it kind of teetering and kind of making movements like this, and it was headed straight for the assisted living facility that was right across the street from the airport. it lasted about five seconds, and then it disappeared. and i just saw a black cloud of smoke come up. >> authorities have not revealed the extent to which the passengers were injured, but we do know all five have been hospitalized and two passengers

are being treated for burns. >> in san jose, 17 cars were impounded by police, all suspected of taking part in sideshows across the city. police shared these photos of some of those cars being towed over the weekend. investigators say they found one car abandoned and set on fire. firefighters put that fire out quickly before more harm could be done. police say the investigation is not over. officers are working to identify more people who took part in the sideshows. and now it's our abc seven mornings adventure. a preview of some of the things happening today in the bay area. >> first, the san francisco aids foundation is holding a rally to support hiv research programs. the group will be gathering with scientists and researchers to bring awareness to programs threatened by the trump administration's attempts to freeze federal funding. today's rally starts at 6 p.m. at yerba buena gardens, which is near the conference on retroviruses and opportunistic infections. it's happening at moscone center. that conference is focused on the understanding, treatment and prevention of hiv and aids, and

between the u.s, mexico and canada playing out throughout the week. the president now saying that he won't rule out the possibility of a recession. so let's take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway this morning. pretty volatile again as we start the day down. about 330 points. egg prices continue to go up. now the department of justice wants to know why the agency announcing over the weekend that it will investigate major egg producers over these increased prices. they want to know whether the major egg companies are sharing information about supply and pricing, and possibly contributing to price increases. the investigation is being run out of the antitrust division of the justice department, and won't necessarily lead to any legal action. it's not just eggs. coffee prices are at an all time high. in february, the cost of arabica coffee futures, which set the current price more than double from the same time last year. sfgate reports that the price is being passed on to us, with several bay area cafes and roasters increasing their

prices, severe weather being blamed for taking a toll on global coffee bean harvests. volkswagen is going back to the basics with its cars. the company planning to bring back physical buttons instead of newer touchscreen features, the design chief at the company said in a recent interview. the decision to remove those buttons were a, quote, mistake. this doesn't mean touchscreens are set to disappear on new volkswagens, just that drivers will now have the option to use physical controls for their most used day to day tasks. >> the annual south by southwest conference is underway in austin, texas. the star studded event celebrates film, television, comedy, technology and more. this included robert downey jr making a surprise appearance at the disney parks panel. he explained how helping with the new star labs disneyland ride is the privilege of a lifetime for him. outside of that, the conference is stuffed with movie screenings and premieres. >> i really think you have film

the forecast here on wednesday. so take a look at the accuweather headlines. it's mild today with a mix of sun and clouds. a little bit of a mess midweek here with rain wind, snow on our highest peaks. some rough surf along our coast and once the rain is here, it's on and off, likely through the upcoming weekend. but this morning we're dry. we find those temperatures starting out mainly in the 40s. as the sun gets up here after 730. it's a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures climbing into the 60s around noon. but the afternoon we keep climbing. daytime highs will feel mild, very similar to how it felt over the weekend, 60s to the low 70s, with a northerly wind at about 11mph overnight. tonight we do keep it partly cloudy. we'll keep it dry and overnight lows in the 30s and in the 40s. now. tomorrow still dry, but cooler air starts to move in here. so temperatures start to dip a little bit below average. certainly chilly here on wednesday. look at these temperatures. that is when the rain and the wind are moving through. so here's future weather. let's plan out your

wednesday. here's wednesday morning at 830 and we find scattered light showers. at first, the heavier rain probably holds off until the afternoon and into the evening. see those bright colors on future weather indicating those downpours crossing through along the cold front. for a lot of us on wednesday, we're seeing about a half of an inch to an inch of rain. we'll likely see some higher totals in the santa cruz mountains and in parts of the north bay, where we could see more than an inch. in some isolated areas. this will be a major winter storm for the sierra. a winter storm watch is posted for tomorrow through thursday. snow levels are pretty low. we're down to around 4000ft, so above that, 2 to 3ft of snow up to four feet possible on our highest peaks, with winds gusting upwards of 70mph. so accuweather seven day forecast. partly cloudy and mild today, a little cooler tomorrow. rain and wind here wednesday with a level two moderate storm. and then those showers on and off as we head into the weekend. amanda. >> all right drew, thank you. a

viral video from stockton has launched a police investigation and inspired a councilwoman to take action. in the video, you're about to see, a stockton residents saw an unhoused man climbing out of a storm drain. >> what in the world? >> it was shocking. he looked like this is just another day, you know, like he's coming out for another. another day. >> the video caught the eye of stockton councilwoman michelle padilla. councilwoman padilla chairs the community's homelessness committee, and she's expected to bring up the issue today during a city hall meeting. >> this is something that we cannot wait any longer. we need to address the issues. now. there could be needles, there could be toxic chemicals, and then even the possibility of a flood. >> according to a stockton police spokesperson, authorities checked out the storm drain yesterday and only found trash. it will be cleared to further assess the situation.
