>> a last ditch effort to keep san francisco's great highway open to cars. the legal action being taken today to reverse a voter approved plan to transform that road into a park. >> plus, the growing backlash against tesla showrooms being targeted. owners selling their cars. all of this to send a message to ceo elon musk about his involvement with the trump administration. how president trump is responding today. >> good morning. it is tuesday, march 11th. >> yeah, we are expecting things to cool down. right. >> yeah. and then tomorrow rain is back in the forecast. so today we get one more dry day. and then we'll track that rain and wind on your wednesday. here is a live look at our walnut creek camera this morning where rain is not an issue. the next 24 hours, but tomorrow, especially in the afternoon and the evening, it will get slick out there as those downpours cross us and we have some gusty winds as well. temperatures. right now we're generally in the 40s and 50s for the most part. we have some cooler spots in the north bay where you can see santa rosa, sonoma, nevada right now beginning in the 30s.

similar story in ukiah at 39 degrees. so looking at future weather, just like yesterday, it will be a partly cloudy sky. temperatures a little bit cooler compared to yesterday, but still really pleasant. here's your 3:30 p.m. numbers, where we're finding temperatures in the low and mid 60s. we'll find clouds creeping back in this evening. and then we turn overcast tonight. and here comes that rain first thing tomorrow morning. but today we are dry and mix of sun and clouds. temperatures pleasant. your sunset today at 714. let's check in with gloria. see the drive times. >> you know, looking pretty good out there on the roads this morning. so this is a live look at our bay bridge toll plaza camera. and you can see it is pretty busy out there. carpool lanes, though you won't have any issues as they're dashing through pretty quickly. metering lights turn on about a half hour ago, and if you're driving from highway four to san francisco, you're looking at about 52 minutes right now and getting a live look at our san jose 101 880 camera. traffic is a little sluggish after santa clara street, but really no issues as you approach oakland road all the way to the peninsula and to

the city, and look at your mass transit ace, bart, caltrain all. on time right now. no issues there. >> commuters in the south bay. it is going to be another tough day if you rely on public transit, bus and light rail service. not operating for a second day in a row as some 1500 vta workers remain on strike. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at the vta yard, where picketing is once again underway. lena. >> hey, reggie aqui. as picket lines like this one we're seeing right here behind me at the vta yard are being spread out across this county. we nearly 100,000 people who rely on both bus and light rail services every single day will need to find a different way to get around town for a second day in a row now. yesterday we found one busy light rail stop sitting empty while busses and light rail sat parked at you. local two. 65 workers are calling for a significant bump in pay, better benefits, improved grievance

procedures and also better workplace conditions. despite starting negotiations six months ago and meeting on sunday to try to avoid this strike. the union president told me nothing came out of it. he says vta's offer of a 9% pay raise over three years wasn't good enough, though vta says the union has not shown willingness to move on their demands. >> you know, i couldn't tell you how disappointed we truly were that they didn't even try to increase their offer by even a percent. >> the kind of wage increase that atu is asking for is just not possible in, in a way that we can maintain the service that we're offering our passengers that they need. we would have to make service cuts and possibly job cuts. >> reporter. >> the first day of the walkout wasn't without incident. two strikers suffered injuries when they were hit by a truck, which then took off. one striker went to the hospital. and san jose police are still investigating. now the union will be holding a rally over at vta headquarters

later today. that's expected to start around 930, and we're told that will be including the atu international president. live in san jose. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and we are tracking developing news this morning about the impending permanent closure of a portion of san francisco's great highway. with just days to go before work is set to begin to transform the street into a park, there is a last ditch effort to stop the project. and gloria, opponents are now taking a legal action. >> yesterday, a group of people trying to keep the great highway open to cars plans to sue to stop the closure. they will argue that proposition k violates state law and did not have the required environmental review. prop k was approved by voters in november. supporters of turning the great highway into a park say this lawsuit is a waste of time and resources, and undermines the outcome of the election. thursday is set to be the last day for cars on the road before it's permanently closed. then work is scheduled to begin that transformation.

but that is, of course, unless there is some sort of a last minute order from a judge after the lawsuit is filed. today, the new park is set to officially open on april 12th. reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. seven student athletes are now suing sonoma state university and top college administrators over a plan to end all of the school's sports programs. the lawsuit has been filed in sonoma county superior court. cutting the sports programs is just one part of this proposal to trim $24 million from sonoma state's budget. several academic programs and faculty jobs are on the line, too. the plaintiffs are not seeking damages. they're asking for a judge to stop the school from making the cuts. >> new developments in the trump administration's investigation of dozens of universities. this includes cal and stanford over claims of anti-semitism. yesterday, the department of education sent a letter to 60 schools warning them of potential enforcement if they don't fulfill their obligation to protect jewish students. title ix prohibits discrimination in programs that

receive federal funding. cal, stanford and 58 other universities are currently under investigation for title six violations related to anti-semitic harassment. >> crews have started to remove the black lives matter mural from near the white house. the painting was done in 2020, following the murder of george floyd by a minneapolis police officer. washington dc's mayor announced plans to replace it. last week. republican lawmakers threatened to revoke millions of dollars in transportation funding from the city if it wasn't demolished. the plaza where the mural was located will be repainted as part of a project to mark the country's 250th birthday next year. >> this morning, law enforcement agencies across the country are investigating a series of attacks that have damaged tesla's showrooms, charging stations and vehicles. they've left tesla drivers, including those here in the bay area, worried about the safety of their cars. the violence is linked to ceo elon musk's involvement with the trump administration's effort to drastically reduce the size of

the federal government. musk has been leading the group in charge of firing thousands of federal employees. now, his companies have become the target of protests. tesla's stock is down 50% since the election, and sales have been well below expectations. protesters in the bay area say they do not approve of violence, but they do have a strong message for musk and trump. >> we're not interested in damaging vehicles or harming people or property. we are interested in taking down the stock price of tesla so that we can send a clear message to elon musk and to donald trump that they need to stop destroying our government. >> some tesla drivers have been selling their cars in protest. others have been buying anti-tesla stickers with sayings like elon killed my resale value. president trump is continuing to support musk, though. he posted on social media last night, promising to buy a tesla today. >> time now. 608 in the

accuweather forecast. we're looking at live doppler seven, along with satellite low pressure spinning into southern california. this morning is bringing rain to l.a, san diego. we're too far away from the center of the low for any moisture today, but that will change here tomorrow. this is our system that will bring us some rain. so future weather showing you by tomorrow afternoon. there's that rain moving in here. heavy at times, and it will be gusty with these winds about 30 to 50mph. but ahead of that front, today it is going to be a quiet day. looking at your day planner, you will see that it's just a partly cloudy sky. a dry afternoon sunrise today at 726. a little bit cooler than yesterday, but still very pleasant. we look at those afternoon temperatures, so the three day forecast reflects that rain tomorrow. it's a level two a moderate storm on our wednesday. and then some leftover showers linger into early thursday. but on the storm impact scale, we do expect the heaviest rain and the strongest winds tomorrow afternoon between about noon and 6 p.m. we'll also have some rough surf along our

in session this morning at two schools in occidental after their campus was evacuated due to a threat of violence. sky seven was overhead yesterday as more than 200 students were led off the campus. this was shared by harmony elementary school in salmon creek middle school. sonoma county investigators say the father of a student is under arrest, accused of making a threat to the school. >> that he was going to show up after school with the weapon, and to make sure that the sheriff's deputies were there. >> we are waiting for officials to release more information about the suspect and the criminal charges he faces. happening today, san jose's mayor is expected to release his march budget message. part of that is a unique plan to give pay raises to city officials,

tied to making progress in the city. under matt mahan's plan, employees would get raises based on measurable progress on key issues like homelessness, cleaning up neighborhoods, improving safety, and the ability to attract new jobs and housing opportunities. the decision to implement this system will ultimately be up to the voters. >> for elected officials, because our pay is determined by a salary setting commission that sits outside of city hall, that which is governed by past ballot measures. we have to go to the ballot in order to direct the salary setting commission to tie our pay raises to performance. >> residents told abc seven pay raises shouldn't dictate whether progress is being made in the city. the pay raises would only impact elected officials. if this proposal goes to the ballot, it would be voted on next year and implemented in 2027. the former owner of the biggest mall in san francisco is

now proposing a possible housing redevelopment plan. according to the chronicle, westfield is in the process of attracting potential buyers by selling two empty office buildings next to san francisco center to be turned into housing. westfield bought the property near mission and fourth streets almost two decades ago for $42 million. the mall struggled during the pandemic and is now nearly empty. nearby, the city's union square. a major announcement, the city says renown baker b bakery b patisserie will permanently take over a kiosk recently vacated by celebrity chef tyler florence. the bakery's co-owner says their goal is to offer delicious, easy to grab items at a fair price. b patisserie began negotiations with the city after popping up at the kiosk last month. artificial intelligence leader open ai is deepening its commitment to san francisco. yesterday, the company opened its brand new headquarters in mission bay. mayor daniel lurie

was there to cut the ribbon. the company now occupies about 1,000,000ft■!s of office space across the city. open ai currently employs 2000 people in san francisco, and executives say all this extra space will allow the company to double that number in the coming years. >> we have a state of the art facility here. think about research, development, applied and all these other teams coming together to really focus on ai research and product innovation. we're proud to support the city to be really the hub of ai innovation. >> open ai was founded in san francisco in 2015, with its original base on 18th street in the mission district. >> celine dion going on record warning fans to be wary of fake ai generated songs online. so here's an instagram post from over the weekend. the canadian singer says she's discovered instances of her voice being used in fake songs. she didn't name the songs or the sources, but she says the recordings are again fake and not approved. the

use of ai is an increasing source of debate in the music industry. last april, more than 200 artists, including billie eilish and katy perry, signed an open letter speaking out against ai related threats. do you know dokey? well, if you don't, you will soon. she's been making the rounds on late night talk show hosts as a musical guest. she just won her first grammy for rap album of the year with her album alligator bites never heal. and now a new accomplishment. she has been named billboard's two 2025 woman of the year, and she is bringing the receipts. she's going to be honored at a billboard event later this month. she has had five of her tracks chart on the billboard hot 100. she performed at the grammys recently. she's been popping in on tyler the creator's tour to perform their song they collaborated on, they collaborated on, and she just released a new single, a music video with jenny, a former member of blackpink that has been really doing well online. so she is the moment. >> yeah, she really is.

roadways out there. it's the afternoon and the evening. the showers become heavier and more widespread, so we'll stop the clock here at 3 p.m. tomorrow. and there you can see this line of some intense rain. this also coincides with some strong gusty winds as well, and that continues throughout the evening. so do anticipate that the evening commute tomorrow will be a little slower and a little wetter than the morning commute. the showers do wrap up here closer to 7:08 p.m. as that system kicks off to the east. rainfall totals about a half of an inch to an inch and a half of rain expected. and the bulk of this is going to fall between noon and 6 p.m. tomorrow. those winds will turn gusty as that front moves through. so by 2 p.m, as we track those heavier rain showers, you can see those winds 30 to 50mph. so that will certainly create some hazards. could have some trees coming down underneath those winds. this will be a major winter storm in the sierra. winter storm warning begins tonight. snow levels down to about 4000ft. so above that, 1 to 4ft

were yesterday a few degrees cooler, but still at 330. it feels really pleasant with those numbers in the 60s. now tonight you will notice those clouds increasing pretty quickly for overcast skies. and first thing tomorrow morning, here comes the rain and does turn heavier tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. so those temperatures right now again in the 30s. in the 40s. you need that jacket. leave the umbrella at home. you don't need that. but you'll need it tomorrow. and the three day forecast is a level two on our wednesday close. look at that rain and wind coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria. see those dry? >> yeah. you know, let's get right to those drive times right now. because i know a lot of you are heading out the door pretty soon getting to work. so highway four to the maze you're looking at 25 minutes. emeryville to san francisco, 18 minutes. san francisco to sfo ten minutes. and looking live at our walnut creek camera here you can see it is a little busy there, but no major delays. it is a smooth drive from highway 4 to 242, all the way down to highway 24 and looking live at our richmond san rafael bridge. pretty busy

there, traffic moving very slowly, and it's starting to accumulate there on westbound 580 from castro street towards the mid span. so a little slow going there reggie. >> we had a huge sell off yesterday. so we are taking a look right now at how the day is starting today. the new york stock exchange is down again this morning about 82 points but nothing like what we saw yesterday. so we shall see how this turns out for the rest of the day. again i mentioned that big sell off the dow closed down nearly 900 points yesterday, making it the worst one day plunge in nearly three years. the nasdaq and s&p 500 also taking big hits. it comes as new tariffs on steel and aluminum are set to go into effect tomorrow. >> and investors have raised concerns over the tariffs and a possible recession. president trump has not eased those fears. >> abc news reporter nicole deantonio live in d.c. this morning, with the reaction coming from the white house. nicole. >> well, reggie. amanda, it's been a busy last couple days

here. the stock market just suffered its worst day since 2022, reflecting the growing uncertainty surrounding the president's tariff policy. this morning, president trump brushing off concerns after the stock market dropped by almost 900 points on monday. it's the biggest sell off all year after trump refused to rule out the possibility being raised by some economists that the u.s. could be heading into a recession. >> if the u.s. imposes tariffs. to the degree that the president has been talking about and maintains them for more than a few months, i think a recession will be unavoidable. >> it comes after president trump launched a trade war with several of our closest trading partners mexico, canada and china, imposing stiff tariffs and threatening more to come. on wednesday, tariffs on steel and aluminum are set to go into effect, which could mean that by memorial day, americans will be paying more for everything from washing machines and toasters to canned goods and cars. brian bogs owns a small business in

asheville, north carolina, and explained the impact on his business. >> you know, we're all used to uncertainty, but this is a mess. >> some house republicans praised the tariffs, claiming that trump is supercharging the economy by bringing back american jobs. >> everybody relax. it's going to be okay. >> but elon musk's comments about social security and medicare are also drawing scrutiny, suggesting they may be key targets for spending cuts. >> the way support in entitlement spending, which is all of the which is most of the federal spending, is entitlements. >> democrats pouncing, saying musk's comments prove social security is under attack and at risk. supporters say musk was referring only to the waste and fraud within those programs. >> it is not something we could ever support. house democrats will not be complicit in the republican effort to hurt the american people.

>> now, overnight, president trump sharing on social media that he plans to buy a brand new tesla as a show of confidence for billionaire elon musk. this after tesla stock dropped nearly 15% just yesterday. amanda. >> all right nicole thank you. and those funding cut fears are driving san francisco mayor daniel lurie to send a delegation to washington, d.c, this week. the mayor's office says without support from the federal government, the city's $800 million budget deficit could top $1 billion this week. a team of city staff will meet with lawmakers in d.c. to push for fema reimbursements and infrastructure grants. they will also push back on proposed cuts to social services. >> california attorney general rob bonta is putting the location data industry on notice. bonta has sent letters to advertising networks, mobile app providers and data brokers. he's demanding to know how they implement, giving consumers a chance to opt out of the sale of data. location data can be used to track your precise movements

investigating. now we have learned that the union will be holding a rally outside of the vta headquarters. that is where many of these protesters on the picket line have headed over already. that is expected to start around 830 this morning, but still no word yet on when both parties are expected to head back to the bargaining table. live in san jose. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right. lena. thank you. now, the legal battle over the trump administration's effort to deport a pro-palestinian activist detained at columbia university. a judge has blocked his removal from the country. and, gloria, tomorrow there is a hearing in the case. >> there is amanda. attorneys for mahmoud khalil will go back before a judge tomorrow to argue his release from an ice detention center. immigration agents arrested khalil on saturday night, accusing him of leading activities aligned to hamas as a designated terrorist organization. khalil was born in syria and has led pro-palestinian protests at columbia university. he is a

legal resident. his attorneys say he has a green card. his arrest has sparked protests across the country, including yesterday at uc berkeley. we spoke to nyu professor robert cohen. he says arrests like this could have a big impact on free speech on college campuses across the country. >> it's going to have a chilling effect, particularly on immigrant students. they'll be afraid if they express, like, their first amendment rights to dissent, that they have to worry about being deported. >> khalil's arrest comes as the trump administration moves to crack down on pro-palestinian groups on college campuses. the department of education has sent letters to 60 colleges, including uc berkeley and stanford. they demand that they protect jewish students from harassment and discrimination, or risk losing federal funding. columbia university lost $400 million worth of grants for what has been called the harassment of jewish students. now it will be up to the schools to decide if they either push back on possible funding cuts or work at restricting future rallies.

a congresswoman, katie porter is running for governor. the orange county democrat made the announcement this morning with a video on social media that

focused on president trump and his administration. porter said as governor, she would focus on fighting corruption, climate change and high costs. there are already four other democrats in the race and one major republican candidate. and then there's this former vice president kamala harris is said to be seriously considering a run. we could find out by the end of the summer if she'll do that. governor newsom turns out in 2027. >> positive news coming out of the vatican regarding pope francis health. according to his medical team, the 88 year old is no longer in imminent danger of death. the pope has been hospitalized for nearly a month as he recovers from pneumonia in both lungs. vatican officials say he slept well overnight. he is still recovering, receiving supplemental oxygen treatments. this is due to his age and other health concerns, and he will need to remain in the hospital, at least for a few more days. >> wendy williams has reportedly undergone a mental examination at a new york hospital after police were called to the

assisted living facility where she's been living. she reportedly dropped a note for help from her fifth floor window to the photographers below. williams has been fighting to end a conservatorship that started after she was diagnosed with dementia several years ago. she claims she is not suffering from dementia. williams is scheduled to appear on abc's the view this friday, but it isn't clear if what happened yesterday will impact that plan. the view airs weekdays at 10 a.m. right here on abc seven. >> discussions are underway to build a new battery storage plant in daly city. the cormorant energy storage project is near the cow palace, at the corner of carter street and saddleback drive. the goal of the 250 megawatt facility is to strengthen the electric grid, storing enough energy to power up to 200,000 homes for four hours. once completed, it will be one third the size of the moss landing facility, which caught fire in january. some daly city council members shared their concerns for the people living nearby. >> my concern is that god forbid

there be a fire, and at moss landing they evacuated over 2000 residents from that area within two miles. so my concern is for the people. >> the city council agreed the project should conduct outreach to homes within a one mile radius of the property in the south bay, a popular spot for sports fans may soon also become host to concerts. the san jose earthquakes have just submitted a proposal for paypal park to host more than a dozen shows per year. the stadium can seat 18,000 people. the plans would allow concerts on any day of the week. mayor matt mehan says it would be a big economic opportunity for the city. >> it's time for san jose, and especially downtown san jose, to grow into its own as the urban center for silicon valley, as the place where people can live,

old. it will stop the for you page feed with a full screen takeover and play calming music. this is thought to be the first time an app has added mindfulness tools directly to users. the update will also add new parental control features. now let's see what is happening on wall street. you can see that we remain down this morning about 150 points. remember yesterday was a huge sell off, one of the worst days in years on the stock market. we'll see how the rest of the morning does. >> southwest airlines is making a huge change that many of its loyal customers are not happy about. >> starting may 28th, the airline is going to, yes, begin charging you for your bags. this is a pretty huge change for a company that has made free checked bags and no assigned seats. part of its identity. for years, southwest has been facing pressure from investors who want the airline to increase revenue. you can still get free checked bags if you have a less preferred a-list preferred status, or if you have their southwest branded credit card. last year, southwest announced

forecast. so today you don't need the umbrella. you look at your morning planner. it's really calm. it's really quiet out there. temperatures get their steady climb through the 50s and into the 60s close to lunchtime. today is slightly cooler than yesterday, but stil, you can see those temperatures on your screen. very pleasant for this time of the year. overnight tonight, the clouds roll back in and then we have rain returning first thing tomorrow morning. but as this front approaches, it does keep overnight lows elevated upper 40s to the lower 50s. let's go hour by hour tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. as the morning commute is underway, we do expect some light scattered showers. nothing too intense, but the roads will be damp in some areas. it's the afternoon and into the evening. the rain becomes widespread and more intense. here's 3 p.m. we have this cold front that will be crossing us, and that's when we'll find some of the heaviest rain, and also some of the strongest winds. that does continue through about 5:06 p.m. after 7 p.m, things do calm down. later tomorrow evening. rainfall totals a range between half an inch and an inch and a

in the north bay. the san rafael school board discussed a resolution condemning the term toxic masculinity. last night's resolution was proposed by the board's vice president. he says the term implies young men need to be fixed by women, and is not a constructive way to discuss gender dynamics in our society. here's what parents thought last night. proposing a resolution that does not call for action is ineffective, wastes our resources, and appears to be a test to see if anyone is paying attention. i assure you, we are paying attention and we expect better. >> ultimately, the resolution is not intended to detract from the progress of women. it is about recognizing the challenges facing young men and exploring how we can improve outcomes in our community together. i believe that if. >> the board opted to not vote on the resolution yet. new at six two restaurants inside ikea's food hall on market street in san francisco are closing. the vegan taqueria la venganza announced on instagram that they're closed. they wrote
