going to be all over that last story. yes, yes. >> we're going to have a lot more on that coming up. we're going to begin, though, with the stock market plunge yesterday. you saw that after president trump declined to rule out the possibility of recession. also doubled down on his tariff plans. dow dropped nearly 900 points over 2%. the s&p fell 2.7%. nasdaq down 4%, losing more than $1 trillion in value. >> our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis will have the latest on wall street, but our senior political correspondent rachel scott starts us off at the white house this morning. good morning rachel. >> michael, good morning to you. and the president was out of sight as wall street suffered its worst day of the year, all in response to the president's words and those on and off again tariffs. this morning, fears of a recession worsening, the dow plunging 900 points, the nasdaq suffering its worst day since 2022 after president donald trump refused to rule out if the u.s. is heading for a recession. >> i hate to predict things like that. there is a period of transition because what we're

>> and with tariffs on steel and aluminum imports set to go into effect tomorrow, the impact could be far reaching for americans. prices for everything from washing machines to toasters, canned goods and cars? and the answer is nothing to lower prices. but he sure as heck has created a lot of economic chaos and things that will actually increase prices for families. >> the president has repeatedly said that he is not looking at wall street to dictate his decisions, but when he did impose tariffs on canadian and mexican goods, the stock market took a hit. the president responded by pausing many of those tariffs. overnight, senator rand paul, a republican, saying when the stock market tumbles in response to tariffs, it pays to listen. >> george and rachel, congress has to pass a spending bill by friday to avoid a government shutdown. >> george, the clock is ticking, and house republicans will put their bill on the floor today. their plan to avert a government
7:07 am
shutdown with all house democrats opposed, speaker mike johnson can only afford to lose a single vote. and already congressman thomas massie, a republican, says he will be voting against this. overnight, president trump saying massie should be primaried, saying he'll lead the charge against him. the question now, can republicans get this through the house without the support of any democrats? and will democrats in the senate come around if they do, george? >> that's the big question there. 7 or 8 democrats would need to support it. okay, rachel, thanks very much. let's get the look for what happened in the markets now from our chief business correspondent, rebecca jarvis on wall street. >> rebecca and george, you can feel that uncertainty here on wall street reflected in stocks this morning. it looked like they'd be opening higher. now they're trending lower again. and it's not just the stock market that's rattled. you see businesses trying to sort through what these tariffs will mean for them. i've talked to a number of ceos who say they're not thinking about growth, new hiring, new investments in their companies right now. instead, they are thinking through how
7:08 am
these tariffs will impact them and how they need to organize their businesses around that. that can have its own ripple effect and consequences. as you look through at jobs, we did have a relatively strong jobs report, 151,000 jobs added last month, but it's something that businesses will now have to consider. do i hire or do i wait because i need to sort this all through? >> the other big question out there is how are consumers going to react? >> and as a consumer, george, you don't have to be invested in the stock market for this to have an impact. of course, you as a consumer can see these headlines. the market selling off. you hear about jobs being cut in various places. that has its own impact. it can rattle consumers. and the real issue is if the consumer is rattled, they pull back on spending. maybe you see the headline and you think, we're not going to take as big of a summer vacation, or i'm going to cut back on my coffee consumption. all of those things end up being less consumer spending. consumers are what
7:09 am
generate economic growth in the united states. 70% of the economy is how we spend and how we behave that if it ripples through, if people stop spending as much, that can have consequences for companies who then begin to cut back because they don't need to make as many products or deliver as many services. to put. however, what's happened in context, when you look at the s&p 500, that's the thing. in most 401 s, that's what's reflected in your retirement savings account. we're down about 4% this year. that means if you started the year as the average 401 k at $131,000 today, you'd have about $127,000 left in your account. >> of course, the other big concern for consumers right now is inflation. rebecca jarvis, thanks very much. robin. >> okay, george. and now overseas to breaking news overnight, ukraine launched a massive drone attack on russia. this comes as top white house officials are holding a meeting with president zelensky's team. our foreign correspondent james longman is on the scene for us there in ukraine. good morning james.
7:10 am
>> yeah. good morning robin. ukraine has launched its largest drone attack on russia since this war began. russian defense systems managed to shoot down more than 300 drones all across the country, but many of them got through. 18 people at least have been injured, three others killed. this attack is so big that three moscow airports had to close temporarily in response, of course, to last week's massive russian attack on ukraine. but the timing here is no accident. right now, the united states and ukraine are discussing peace in saudi arabia. it's the first time the two sides have met since that disastrous oval office encounter. president zelenskyy has since written to donald trump to express his regret for how that meeting panned out, and to reaffirm his commitment to peace. he himself will not be at these talks, but his delegation is there. marco rubio, the secretary of state leading for the americans. the ukrainians are presenting their plan for a truce to stop long range missiles being used by air and by sea. rubio has said that that plan has promise, but that the ukrainians need to be prepared
7:11 am
to make some difficult decisions. and by that he might mean ceding territory to russia. now the ukrainians are ready for peace. they say they want to sign a deal, but they say they will not do it unless there are security guarantees that stop vladimir putin from invading again. michael. >> all right. james, thank you so much for that. we're going to turn now to the fiery oil tanker collision off the coast of england. a container ship collided with a u.s. flagged tanker this morning. crews are racing to contain the damage. and our marcus moore is in grimsby, england, with more. good morning. marcus. >> well michael good morning. overnight, rescuers suspended their desperate search for a missing sailor as we are seeing new images of the devastating aftermath of this collision. a massive inferno with clouds of black smoke rising into the air and fuel spilling into the sea. authorities say around 10 a.m. monday in the north sea, a portuguese cargo ship slammed into a u.s. oil tanker. it was carrying jet fuel for the military. while the cargo ship
7:12 am
was carrying empty containers that had previously contained sodium cyanide, a dangerous chemical that, if it came into contact with water, could create the highly toxic and deadly hydrogen cyanide gas. foggy conditions reported at the time of the collision, but investigators don't believe the crash was intentional. >> there will be an investigation. with all the technology that all these vessels have, there's no way it should have happened. >> and now growing concerns over the impact to the environment. and this is still developing. that portuguese cargo ship is still on fire this morning and is adrift in the north sea, while the american tanker, it is smoldering as officials here in the uk try to figure out how these two ships collided. george. >> okay, marcus, we're going to go to the mendez brothers now. la's new district attorney says he opposes releasing the menendez family members, blasting the decision. trevor ault has the story. good morning trevor. >> good morning george. not only did the da say he thinks the
7:13 am
menendez brothers should stay in prison, he provided a lengthy list of lies that he says they've told and continued to tell for decades. this morning, a major setback for the menendez brothers fight for freedom. >> our position is that they shouldn't get out of jail. >> l.a. district attorney nathan hochman walking back the recommendation from the previous da to reduce the brothers life sentences for the shotgun murder of their parents. the new da accusing them of lying for decades about the murders, beginning with that first 911 call. >> what's the problem? >> i killed my parents. >> pardon me. >> so does this. >> and continuing to the present day, where they maintain they were acting in self-defense after years of alleged sex abuse by their father. >> he just said that was our secret. that bad things would happen to me if i told anybody. >> the thought that they. that their parents were going to kill
7:14 am
them that night of august 20th, 1989. so they had to kill them first. we believe was made up. >> the menendez brothers family have long sought their release, saying erik and lyle have apologized for their actions, which were the result of jose's sexual abuse and kitty's enablement. they're now blasting the da, saying hochman is effectively asking for them to publicly apologize to a checklist of actions they took in a state of shock and fear. they say in an ongoing way, you are biased against the menendez brothers. how do you respond to those claims? >> i am not, as i've said, not only am i not biased, but i will file the facts and the law wherever they take us. >> the menendez brothers hopes for release may now fall on california governor gavin newsom. he has fast tracked a parole board assessment, the first step toward potentially granting clemency for the brothers after 35 years behind bars. and clemency from the governor does appear to be a real possibility. governor newsom has also announced a new
7:15 am
proposal to speed up the parole process, in hopes of shortening the sentences for many california prisoners, and he cited the menendez brothers as part of his reasoning. robin. >> all right, trevor, our thanks to you. now, the investigation underway after a school bus crash on a highway in new jersey. a bus filled with kids wound up flipped on its side. our transportation correspondent, gio benitez has more for us. good morning. gio. >> hey robin. good morning. yeah. this was a terrifying crash. and now we know at least 15 people were sent to the hospital. take a look at the scene here. the bus overturned on new jersey's very popular garden state parkway. it was carrying 31 people are stationed here in new york. wabc says one of the students, just 14 years old, was critically injured. investigators spending the night at the scene looking for clues. it's not clear if any other vehicles were involved. a crane was brought in to help remove the bus from the parkway. investigators don't know what caused the crash, but the bus was found on its side, facing the wrong way. now, we're told new jersey's governor has been briefed. this investigation is

just beginning, guys. >> all right. and it was chilling to see that bus on its side. gio thank you. all right. the quarterback shuffle. first day of nfl free agency. several big names have new homes. and it looks like aaron rodgers is going to be heading to pittsburgh. will reeve. >> certainly possible. good morning robin. good morning all. it's more of a wear than an if regarding aaron rodgers future nfl free agency unofficially began yesterday. teams are allowed to contact free agents begin negotiating before it all officially begins at 4 p.m. eastern tomorrow. we've had some quarterback musical chairs, which impacts where rodgers may have a place to play. so according to the pittsburgh post gazette, the steelers are in serious talks with the former green bay packers and new york jets qb to bring his talents to the steel city. pittsburgh had two quarterbacks last year. one of them, justin fields, is headed to the jets, where rodgers just left after two seasons marred by injury and general team underperformance. but there does remain interest in the 41 year old rodgers. general managers of the approximately six teams in the market for a qb seem to be
7:17 am
thinking less about his recent past and more about the rodgers, who played in green bay, a super bowl champion, four time nfl mvp, future hall of famer. if rodgers does move to pittsburgh, it's believed that their current starting qb, russell wilson, could be heading to the new york giants. but rodgers also has had reported interest from the giants. and some people were thinking maybe the seattle seahawks until they locked up sam darnold with a reported three year, $100 million deal. all of this is to say round and round we go on the wheel of qbs. it's the most important position in sports. rodgers does come with a litany of red flags and alarm bells, but his resume is tantalizing and thus he will always be in the conversation just how he seems to like it. >> wow. a lot going on there. only thing that you said that bothered me was the most important position in sports. >> okay. i was watching your face when he said that. i was too. i started maybe, like, inching this way a little bit. russ. the rest. >> was fantastic. yes. well. all
