aluminum. this after a day of back and forth between the u.s. and canada. our chief white house correspondent, mary bruce, has the latest for us. good morning. mary. >> robin. good morning. well, overnight, the president's 25% tariffs on aluminum and steel going into effect after another chaotic day of escalations and retreats, this roller coaster of a trade war is leaving markets reeling. and americans feeling the uncertainty this morning as the president ups his trade war. trump dismissing the turmoil his words and actions are causing on wall street stocks tuesday, tumbling nearly 500 points. >> mr. president, when you look at the market selling off, that didn't concern you. and where do you see it going, chairman? >> i think some some people are going to make great deals by buying stocks and bonds and all the things they're buying. >> just days after refusing to rule out a recession, trump now changing his tune. >> do you think there will be a recession? >> i don't see it at all. i think this country is going to boom. but as i said, i can do it the easy way or the hard way.

the hard way to do it is exactly what i'm doing. but the results are going to be 20 times greater. >> while he downplays the concerns of many americans deeply unsettled by his trade war, the president is giving elon musk, the world's richest man in his company, a big endorsement touting tesla's luxury cars at the white house as the company's stock tumbles down 39% so far this year, losing about $700 billion in market value. the president promoting the luxury cars, claiming he's even buying one himself. it comes as musk has signaled to some of the president's advisers that he's considering giving a $100 million donation to groups controlled by trump's political operation, an unheard of move. >> what's your best of these cars? what do you think? >> well, the car that i drive is the model s plaid. >> which is. >> that one. it's that red one in the middle. >> i like that, yeah. >> overnight, the next wave of trump's tariffs taking effect 25% on all steel and aluminum imports. it comes after a roller coaster day of threats and retreats. trump vowing to double

that 25% tariff to 50% on steel and aluminum imports from canada after ontario said it would start taxing electricity coming into the u.s, but the two countries then walking back those threats for now. ontario's leader putting the blame squarely on the president. >> assembly plants will shut down because they won't have the aluminum, or they'll be paying twice or three times as much. this is this is absolute chaos created by one person, and that's donald trump. >> the u.s. steel industry is welcoming the latest round of tariffs. danny meeks's company, greenwave technology solutions, operates 13 metal recycling facilities and supplies steel mills. he says the higher the tariff, the better the business. >> with these tariffs, the revenues will increase 15 to 20%. profit margins will follow right behind. >> but economists warn that american businesses will pay for those tariffs and pass costs along to consumers by raising

prices, leaving small business owners bracing for impact. like jeremy peterson, who owns a pet food company in windsor, colorado. the food he sells and the cans themselves are made in canada. >> businesses cannot plan when tariffs are being thrown out every which way, put on pause. reinstate it. it's impossible to plan and it's hurting our relationships with our trading partners. >> democrats are sounding the alarm. >> what he should be doing is going in and seeing the effects of these tariffs on our farmers and ranchers, on small businesses, on manufacturing and on regular people. >> and this trade war is far from over. overnight, the european union announcing up to $28 billion in tariffs on u.s. exports. this is the president is promising those sweeping retaliatory tariffs to come early next month. meanwhile the leader of ontario is planning to meet tomorrow with the commerce secretary to see if they can find some way to work together amid these escalations. michael. >> all right, mary, thank you so

much for that. and as mary said, the latest round of tariffs went into effect at midnight. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is tracking the potential impact for all of us. good morning rebecca. >> good morning michael. investors are on edge with the uncertainty over tariff policy hanging in the backdrop. but they are reacting this morning to some positive news on inflation. the just released report showing prices rose more slowly last month than expected. prices up 2.8% from a year ago. that's an improving picture. and notably grocery prices, which have been climbing for many months. those overall were flat, but those egg prices, they were up almost 59% from a year ago, 10.5% compared to a month ago. the cost of new cars and airfares also declining, where we are starting to see the impact of tariffs from china in particular, is those clothing prices which rose and household furnishings. other areas that saw increases electricity, used cars and medical services, and the bulk of tariffs. the bulk of

what has been announced at this point is not yet showing up in the data. that's something we could start to see in next month's inflation report. george. >> okay, rebecca, we're going to turn now to the mass layoffs at the department of education. after the firings and earlier buyouts, the department has been slashed in half since president trump took office. senior political correspondent rachel scott has that story. good morning. rachel. >> george. good morning. and these are sweeping and mass layoffs at the department of education. and what the education secretary is calling the first step toward dismantling the agency altogether. overnight, the department of education gutted more than 1300 workers told their being laid off. now cutting the agency roughly in half. education secretary linda mcmahon saying those cuts are just the first step. >> what we did today was to take the first step of, of eliminating what i think is, is bureaucratic bloat. >> the department is already the smallest of all cabinet level agencies, but is responsible for everything from managing federal loans for colleges to enforcing

civil rights laws in schools. the leader of the nation's largest teachers union says students will pay the price. >> there is no way that that's going to lead to faster service. calls will go on unlistened to emails will go unread. we know that. >> mcmahon asked what will happen to some of the department's critical programs, like pell grants and funding for students from low income families. >> we kept all of the right people and the good people to make sure that the outward facing programs, the grants, the appropriations that come from congress, all of that are being met, and none of that's going to fall through the cracks. >> mcmahon says the president has given her a mandate to strip down the agency and work with congress to eliminate it. democrats blasting the trump administration's push to shrink the size of the federal government. >> throughout this administration. we're seeing cuts, cuts, cuts, services will not be provided for in this particular case for our schools and the protections for our young people.

>> sources say the president has floated the idea of moving some of the agency's work under the department of treasury. on the campaign trail, trump repeatedly said he wanted to return the power back to the states. it is worth noting that the department of education does not decide what schools can teach. that's already decided at a state and local level. michael. >> all right. rachel, it is important to note. thank you so much for that. we're going to turn now to breaking news overnight, a shooting at one of the country's busiest airports. alex perez is live at o'hare in chicago, tracking the latest developments. good morning. alex. >> hey good morning michael. still a lot of unanswered questions here. just some terrifying moments overnight for those who were here near terminal two. now, chicago police say it was just before 1 a.m. this morning when several people outside of the airport at the arrivals area got into some sort of fight or altercation, and someone pulled a gun and opened fire. a 25 year old man was wounded, shot twice in the lower body. the gunfire piercing through glass, causing panic for those nearby. thankfully, no one

else was injured. authorities are interviewing one person in connection with the shooting. it's unclear what led to that altercation, but the airport is fully open now. robin. >> such a scary situation there. alex. thank you. now to the fallout from the plane crash over our nation's capital earlier this year that killed 67 people. the department of transportation announced immediate changes to try to avoid a similar disaster. transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with those details for us. good morning. >> hey, robin. good morning. yeah, it was just a devastating tragedy. those 67 lives lost when that helicopter collided with a passenger plane in d.c. and now, this morning, urgent changes that could affect airports nationwide. this morning, just over a month after that deadly crash between a blackhawk helicopter and an american airlines plane, a major change from the department of transportation. most helicopters will now be banned from flying on certain routes over the potomac near reagan airport. the national transportation safety board, finding a shocking number

of concerning incidents in the last three years. >> there were 15,214 or close proximity events between commercial airplanes and helicopters. >> and of those, 85 were considered near misses or close calls. the secretary of transportation visibly shaken. >> i think the question is when this data comes in, how did the faa not know? how did they not study the data to say, hey, this is a hotspot. >> since 2011? the ntsb finding that there was at least one warning triggered every month over dca telling pilots they were on a collision course with a helicopter while that blackhawk helicopters crew acknowledged air traffic control's warning about an incoming american airlines flight. >> surgeons say the club has an aircraft sensor separation. >> it is believed to have been flying too high at night, and may not have heard the instruction to fly around the plane. and the transportation

secretary also saying that the department will deploy new advanced radar systems for better location tracking and ai tools to analyze hotspots at airports across the country. he also said that they will introduce new computer systems at air traffic control because, incredibly, he says they are still using floppy disks at air traffic control. right now, a lot of people have been calling for that upgrade. >> wow. >> well, you sure need that. yeah, you really do. thank you. joe. we're going to go overseas now to ukraine. president zelensky's government has agreed to a white house proposal for a 30 day cease fire with russia. if vladimir putin also accepts it. chief international correspondent james longman is on the scene in ukraine. good morning james. >> yeah. good morning george. is this a major breakthrough for peace, or is all this just wishful thinking? but for the moment, it's a major diplomatic victory for ukraine. they have agreed to a us proposal for a 30 day interim ceasefire. this is after eight hours of talks in saudi arabia with a us delegation led by marco rubio. the united states has also agreed to turn back on intelligence sharing and

military assistance. it was a pause that really did threaten to endanger ukrainian troops on the battlefield. ukraine also raising important issues to them, like prisoner exchanges and the return of forcibly removed ukrainian children. but the big caveat here russia was not involved, and we do not know how vladimir putin is going to respond to all this. we know that he's ruled out ceasefires multiple times in the past. his plan is to hold on to some 20% of ukrainian territory that he currently occupies. that's about the same size as louisiana. so diplomacy will begin in earnest this week. the kremlin this morning saying they're going to scrutinize these plans. they're open to conversations with u.s. officials. so steve witkoff, the special envoy, he will travel to russia this week, maybe for a conversation with vladimir putin, try to get him to agree. there might even be a phone call between donald trump and vladimir putin this week. but donald trump says it's his special relationship. that means that he can get a deal done that is about to get tested, robin. >> that it is. all right. james,

thanks. now to the search for the u.s. college student who vanished on vacation in the dominican republic. new surveillance video shows some of the last known images of the 20 year old before she disappeared. erielle reshef is there in the dominican republic for us. >> this morning. new security camera video capturing the last known movements of missing university of pittsburgh student sudiksha honanki. in this footage taken at the punta cana resort where she was staying. she is seen headed to the beach with friends around 4 a.m. after visiting a nightclub in their hotel. roughly two hours later, the rest of the group seen walking back to their rooms without key. authorities say she stayed behind with a man in his 20s, who later told them they went into the water together and got slammed by a large wave. he says he then fell asleep on the beach. >> the surveillance video is quite important because what it does is it provides a timeline of who was, where and when for law enforcement. so that way they can retrace the steps and

find out exactly what happened to her. >> hotel surveillance video catching him shortly before 9 a.m. heading back to his room, nowhere in sight. what do you believe happened to this college student? >> haciendo levantamientos. >> i spoke to diego pesquiera of the dominican republic national police, who told me they are scouring cctv cameras as well as interviewing her friends and the workers at the hotel for any clues. >> law enforcement is really going to be seeking to understand the circumstances by which she disappeared, so they're going to be looking into everything from her mental state, whether or not there were any outside influences, such as drugs or alcohol, that may have been introduced. >> and prosecutors tell us that that boy who was on the beach with conor at the time that she disappeared, is being questioned as a witness to a possible accident or a possible drowning. they don't believe anyone else was involved in her disappearance, but they're not ruling anything out at this point. >> as the investigation continues and we know you're

steel and aluminum. after a day of back and forth between the u.s. and canada, i want to go back to our chief white house correspondent, mary bruce. good morning. mary. >> george, good morning again. well, overnight, the president's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum going into effect after another chaotic day of escalations and retreats, the president's roller coaster trade war is sending markets reeling. and americans feeling the uncertainty. and this morning, this trade war is far from over. canada just responding with 25% reciprocal tariffs on $20 billion of u.s. exports, including steel and aluminum, but also other products like computers, sports equipment and cast iron products. the european union also responding overnight with roughly $28 billion in tariffs on u.s. exports. but the president is dismissing this turmoil. the white house saying this is just a, quote, period of economic transition. the president insists he bears no responsibility for the uncertainty we're seeing in the markets. he is, though, changing his tune after declining to rule out a recession. he now says he doesn't see that at all. and after several rounds of on again, off again threats and retreats with canada, the leader

of ontario now meeting tomorrow with the commerce secretary to see if they can find a way to work together going forward. robin. >> all right, mary, our thanks to you, we're going to bring in our chief business correspondent, rebecca jarvis, again, tracking the potential impact for americans and more inflation concerns this morning. good morning again rebecca. >> good morning robin. nice to see you again. and this is still a very volatile market with tariffs hanging in the backdrop. but we just received some very positive news on inflation showing prices rose more slowly last month than expected. prices up 2.8% from a year ago. they're still going up but they're improving. and notably grocery prices, which have been going up at least for the last seven months, were flat. they didn't go up last month. the cost of cars and airfares also declined from the previous month, where we are starting to see some of the impact of tariffs, in particular tariffs on china is in clothing prices, which were up, and household furnishings. other areas that saw increases

in prices last month electricity, used cars and medical services and shelter costs continue to be a pressure on americans and their budgets. the report, though, makes a fed rate cut much less likely when they meet next week because it puts inflation, which had been going up so rapidly, in a place that's more manageable. and the federal reserve in this environment is much less likely to cut, meaning those credit card and mortgages stay about where they are. michael. >> i'm going to go to the new arrest in an alleged campus hazing death. three people have been charged in connection with the death last month of a southern university and a&m college student. are whit johnson joins us with more. good morning whit. >> michael, good morning to you. authorities were first alerted to this case when a group of men dropped off an unresponsive caleb wilson at the hospital. the men claimed wilson collapsed while playing basketball, but police say that story was not true. and now three suspects are in custody accused of a hazing

ritual that turned deadly. this morning, two more arrests in connection with the alleged hazing death of southern university student caleb wilson. 28 year old isaiah smith is facing one count of criminal hazing. smith was allegedly serving as the dean of pledges for the fraternity. omega psi phi kyle thurman, also taken into custody on criminal hazing charges. in addition to caleb mcrae, who turned himself in last week. >> detectives have. >> interviewed over a dozen people and executed multiple search warrants. >> to gather. >> as much information as possible. >> according to the arrest affidavit. the vehicle that dropped off wilson at the hospital was registered to smith, and smith was seen on surveillance video removing an unresponsive wilson from his vehicle earlier that night. police say wilson and eight other pledges arrived at this warehouse, where they changed into gray sweat suits and stood in a line and were each punched four times with boxing gloves by at least three individuals, now identified by police as smith,

been saved. >> back now with our gma cover story, a new study finds that slushies could cause health problems for kids. and our chief medical correspondent, doctor tara narula, is back to break it down. so break down this study for us. what do we got going on here? >> well, slushies are. >> so popular. i know my nine year old might have gotten one for christmas. a slushie maker and i remember my favorite as a kid, the cherry one from 7-eleven. and they're all made differently. so some have sugar and some are sugar free. so we're talking about the ones that are sugar free, which may have an additive in it called glycerol. now, glycerol is generally recognized as safe by the fda. it's put in things like food, cosmetics and medicines. in this small study, it was a case report of a series of about 21 kids from the uk and ireland

that basically drank those sugar free slushies with glycerol, and they developed. these kids were ages 2 to 6. they developed something called glycerol intoxication syndrome. it occurred about an hour after drinking it, and it resulted in decreased consciousness, low potassium, low blood sugar and some elevated acid in the blood. now it's because of what happened there that the food standards agency in the uk actually issued guidance saying that kids under four should not drink these glycerol sugar free slushies, and kids under ten should not have more than one. >> well, this is very alarming. >> i mean, listen, it's a very small amount of cases, right. and so it is a warning for parents to pay attention. >> so what are your recommendations for parents. >> so parents can certainly start to read ingredients. so if you buy prepackaged slushies or if you get those sirups at home to use in your homemade slushy maker, you can look at the labels and see, does it say glycerol on it? if you go out to a store where they have a machine, you can ask the vendor, is this sugar free? is there

experiencing something that was a serious issue for women, but a specifically difficult issue for black women. >> at 27 years old, khalilah harris noticed huge changes in her body. what were your symptoms? >> extremely heavy bleeding. i developed anemia, extreme fatigue and drowsiness. i felt sick often. my stomach was protruding. >> unsure of what was happening. she spent months monitoring her symptoms. eventually, harris was diagnosed with uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors made of muscle and connective tissue that grow in or on the wall of the uterus. studies have shown that 20 to 80% of women will develop fibroids by the time they turn 50 years old, and are more common in black women. you said, quote, you felt left in the dark. >> yes, yes. i was just like, what do i do next? >> in 2023, doctors surgically removed harris's fibroids but left her with thousands of dollars in medical bills. what do you think? when you saw these

bills. >> i thought to myself, i'm like, wait a minute. if this disproportionately affects black women, if black women are dealing with economic barriers, what are black women's options? i am personally somebody who was impacted by uterine fibroids. >> wanting to demystify the diagnosis and help ease economic barriers for black women, harris teamed up with her friend yasmin griffiths, a medical student, to create a nonprofit organization called the beauty of our wellness. how did you come up with the name? >> we organize arts and wellness related events to raise awareness and raise money. >> you open up a dialog about women's health in your community as well. >> learning about your body is so important to be able to have agency over it and be able to really make decisions that matter. so one of the first things we wanted to do was plan a luncheon, and we wanted to highlight women's stories who are dealing with uterine fibroids. but we also wanted to highlight experts in the field. people across all ages felt so excited to be in a space where they could talk about their bodies and talk about their experiences and things that they

really like cats. i used to foster cats with my family. and we wanted to help you know, the wild cat colonies be able to have ... so we out brochures for the shelters to distribute for the benefit of cat colonies and why businesses and neighborhoods and places should keep their cats, instead of getting rid of them. and we built cat houses and feeding stations so that the cats could live in them. >> lara: so thoughtful, haley so nice of you, very, very sweet. >> robin: cats are close to your heart. all of our hearts. and ellen, from flint michigan, you have been part of some wonderful projects, as well? from working on an anti-bullyin donating to the st. jude's's hospital, that michael knows
