off protests are pushing back against trump's tariffs, budget cuts and immigrant deportations. we are seeing scenes like this one here in boston, in cities of all sizes, all across the country. more than 250,000 people registered to take part in the protests nationwide. this was the scene on livermore avenue in downtown livermore just after noon today. the protests making this the largest single day of action since trump was sworn in for a second term. and here's a look in walnut creek. this was at broadway plaza. congressman mark desaulnier was among the crowd of thousands. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more from san francisco, as well as the north and east bay. to watch me look like this is what democracy looks like. >> thousands of people packing san francisco's civic center to say, hands off to president trump and elon musk. >> what do we do? >> stand up. fight back. >> this rally is part of a national day of action

organized by democratic activists against trump's cuts to the federal workforce and sweeping tariffs that sent the stock market into a freefall this week. >> i'm here because i care about democracy and i care about, honestly, my finances. >> i just had to be part of this. and every single thing that's happening in washington every single day makes me feel so unsecure. i just turned 65 this year, and i feel like everything's falling apart. >> others concerned about possible cuts to government benefits that millions rely on. >> we are saying, get the hell away from our medicaid and medicare and social security. >> in the east bay of big turnout in downtown oakland, pushing back against trump's policies. >> make no mistake about it, marin is fighting back. >> in san rafael, they were protesting, too. organizers

telling his followers on social media to, quote, hang tough. here's abc news reporter johny fernandez. >> the first round of president trump's widespread 10% tariffs took effect at midnight. trump vowing additional tariffs on countries who decide to retaliate. china fighting back by slapping a 34% tariff on u.s. imports. the growing trade war causing stocks to fall sharply. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all lost more than 5% on friday. but trump, standing firm, posting on social media only the weak will fail. fed chairman jerome powell warning higher tariffs will likely add to inflation. in kansas city, laura norris says nearly all of the liquor and wine sold at her restaurant is imported from europe. >> restaurants don't have big margins of profit, so this is

going to be difficult for a lot of us to stomach. >> iowa farmer tony thompson says he's concerned about fertilizer prices. >> putting tariffs on that, like when margins are already tight. we're increasing the like the stress on us as growers. >> with tariffs escalating and inflation on the rise. uncertainty looms over the economy, leaving businesses and consumers unsure of what's to come in the upcoming months. johny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> british carmaker jaguar land rover is pausing shipments to the u.s. because of president trump's tariffs. the automaker says the pause is expected to last about one month, as it, quote addresses the new trading terms. according to the company, it has more than 200 dealerships in the u.s. san francisco based waymo also uses jaguar vehicles. president trump is expected to host israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu at the white house monday. they're expected

to negotiate tariffs after the u.s. hit israel with 17% tariffs this week. the visit also comes as israel is escalating its campaign against hamas, including an expanded ground invasion in northern gaza. and as we continue to follow the tariffs and its impact, you can download the abc seven bay area app to get updates sent straight to your phone. moving on on to the peninsula, where dozens of parents, teachers and community members rallied against the trump administration's threats to cut education. state senator josh becker hosted this morning's stand up and speak out for schools rally in downtown redwood city. he was joined by representative kevin mullen. mullen says congress will fight trump's executive order to shut down the department of education. >> any executive order to eliminate the department of education is unconstitutional. it's illegal and it's immoral. and any proposed changes to the

department of education have to come through the congress. we have the power of the purse. per article one of the constitution, we're going to assert that power. we're going to protect the department of education and all the vital services it provides. >> democrats say the trump administration's potential cuts may lead to larger class sizes, fewer resources for students with disabilities, and weaken civil rights protections in schools. in the north bay, the tiburon town council has advanced a draft ordinance to prohibit youths under 16 from riding some electric bikes. that's according to our media partner, the marin i-j. it applies to class two e-bikes with a throttle that lets a rider reach speeds of 20 miles an hour without pedaling. that ordinance also requires all riders to wear a helmet. the tiburon town council is expected to hold a final vote at its next meeting later this month. last month, the marin board of supervisors approved a matching draft e-bike ordinance for unincorporated areas of the

county. we are following new details after at least three dead whales are found in the san francisco bay within a week. and the midsouth hit by severe weather with major flooding and tens of thousands of people still in the dark. >> i'm spencer christian. our weather is mild and sunny right now, but when will those cooling clouds and showers arrive? i'll have the accuweather forecast in just a moment.

more scenes of protest today as thousands of people rally across the bay area. this was in san mateo this afternoon, outside the office of congressman kevin mullin on el camino real. the hands off rallies are protests against recent actions taken by the trump administration. and over in the east bay, a large crowd gathered in berkeley. this was at north berkeley, bart. where this rally led to the closure of five blocks of sacramento street between virginia and university. across the country, there were more than 1200 hands off rallies. in developing news now, catastrophic and deadly flooding is hitting parts of the south and midwest, where at least ten people have been killed. the remains of a large building were seen just floating down the kentucky river today. and more than 14 tornadoes reported were in the region. abc news reporter morgan norwood shows us more of the destruction. >> torrential rain sweeping across central arkansas on the

heels of a powerful, once in a generation spring storm. a flash flood emergency issued for the little rock area here in north little rock, arkansas. widespread flooding turning intersections like this into river ways. streets blocked off and barricaded. and as the rain continues to fall, the danger mounts. in west plains, missouri, near the arkansas border. video captured by the state highway patrol showing the magnitude of the flooding. a local car dealership and several vehicles submerged and residents urged to stay indoors. >> i think the railing on the bridge is gone now. yeah. can't see it at all. >> a bridge by this local high school destroyed. >> i don't know if the bridge is still there or not. there were people on either side either trying to get from one side to the other or vice versa. just not able to go anywhere. people trying to get through the streets and they couldn't. so they had to turn around and go back. it was just chaos. >> in springfield, missouri, floodwater cascading down the hillside, gushing into the

streets. in northeast texas, a funnel cloud spotted residents urged to seek shelter. >> i need you to take cover immediately. there is a tornado on the ground. >> a tornado watch in effect across parts of the region in spring hill, tennessee. south of nashville, severe thunderstorms spotted along with ominous storm clouds and the town of selmer. residents still cleaning up from a massive ef three tornado. homes ripped apart. the scope of the damage seen from above in frankfort, kentucky, on friday. a nine year old boy died after being swept away by flood waters while walking to his bus stop. his body found just hours later. morgan norwood, abc news, little rock, arkansas. >> we are working to get an update after two more gray whales were found dead in the san francisco bay. according to the marine mammal center, they washed up east of angel island state park and just off fort point rock beach near the golden gate bridge. it all comes days after an emaciated female whale was found dead near alcatraz last weekend. the causes of

death are still not known. we checked with the center today and they tell us samples could take about a week or two to process. they say gray whales are migrating north to feeding grounds in the arctic. structural engineers and specialists are being requested to assess the state of a building that was redtagged after its roof partially collapsed. this happened just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon at a recycling center on leo avenue near monterey road. the fire department says a front loader operating inside the building hit a support beam and the beam collapsed, and that brought down the entire roof. the recycling center in san jose is used for construction debris, mattresses and e-waste. the good news no one was hurt. a beloved italian restaurant in the east bay is closing for good. their message to customers after more than 40 years and san francisco restaurant week is now underway. we'll explain what's on the menu and how much it will cost. plus,

what it looked like in brentwood, where protesters gathered on both sides of a highway four overpass holding signs opposing the trump administration and elon musk. all as passing cars honked in support. in the east bay, a beloved family style italian restaurant is closing this summer. mac's old house in antioch has been in business for more than 40 years. they announced yesterday that they will close june 22nd, and are encouraging customers to come in for one more meal. in a social media post, the restaurant said in part, quote, this little house has served well over 3 million meals and we are grateful for each and every one of you. speaking of food. happening now. san francisco restaurant week is underway. more than 200 restaurants are participating. the special menus offer two or more items for brunch and lunch, and three or more for dinner, with prices

moon bay. nice view from emeryville. looking toward the golden gate. 74 in santa rosa, only 66 in petaluma we've got low 70s at napa and fairfield, 78 degrees right now at livermore. so it's pretty mild in many of our inland areas. and thesee our forecast headlines. the weekend wrap up warming trend continues tomorrow, but late tomorrow into tomorrow night and early monday morning. looks like some spotty showers and cooler conditions will move in. but by the middle of next week, we'll have temperatures at or above average, well above average. once again, the national weather service has issued a beach hazard statement for 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. monday. uh- moderate northwesterly swell will bring an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves, so bear that in mind if you're going to be down near the coastline. here's our forecast animation overnight a few clouds, mainly high clouds, but near the coastal areas. we'll see some low clouds as well. start the day tomorrow with bright skies, but with the presence of those high clouds. and then tomorrow night in comes that frontal system. i was talking about bringing some light showers overnight into monday

morning, but it won't amount to much. we're talking about just a couple of hundredths of an inch of rainfall, and mainly in the north bay, maybe down onto the peninsula and a couple of east bay locations. it won't be area wide though. overnight low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 40s. so cool in some spots but not cold. and tomorrow look for highs of low 60s at the coast. we'll see low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline, mid to upper 70s inland. so it's going to be another nice mild day. here's the accuweather seven day forecast monday. it cools down a bit as those morning showers arrive and the clouds sort of linger into midday. that's a little bit sunnier on tuesday, but not much milder. but wednesday brings quite a warm up, with high temperatures inland near 80 degrees, and that warm weather will last until next weekend when it cools down again. >> a little bit of a roller coaster ride. how's this foa gritty win? after a six game road trip nearly two weeks on the road, the warriors welcome in the nuggets at home on the back end of a back to back. less than 24 hours after defeating the lakers in la. and you know
